Advice

Never forget that you are allowed to have feelings. Your feelings matter JUST AS MUCH as a child's. You are allowed to be bothered by disrespect and cruel treatment. You are allowed to communicate the things that bother you to your SO and to ask for change.

You deserve to be treated fairly the same way that SKs do. You deserve to live in a safe and comfortable environment the same way that SKs do.

You are not a bad person if you do not love or even like your SKs. You are not automatically in the wrong just because you are the adult.

Just because you chose to be with someone with children, does not mean that you knew what you were getting into. It does not mean that you signed up to be a child's doormat.

The people on this sub do not live in your home. They may have experience with SKs but everyone's situation is different. Do not let strangers on the internet convince you to settle for less than you deserve.

Tracking device found

• Upvotes

Has anyone found a tracking device on their stepchild or child when they’ve returned from the other parent’s home?? What would you do??

Yes, I’m frantically writing this here because we have no clue how to handle the situation after my stepkid arrived this evening with a Tile in their shoe, and the old phone they had to play around on that was previously WiFi only is now connected to a cellular network and sharing location with HCBM. It feels like a HUGE violation of privacy!!
Not like we’re going anywhere besides to and from school and maybe out to dinner a couple times this week…. But like….. wtf?!!!!

Double Standard

Blended family, so my partner and I are both step parents to each other’s children. We developed “house rules” when we first moved in. My kids are held to the rules, as they are with us every other week. My partners kids are on a SPO, so they are with us much less. My partners says they don’t want to make their kids “do chores” much (or hold them to the rules) when they are with us because of the limited time schedule.
Last night I called out one of the kids (12YO) for doing something wrong (they were playing with something that wasn’t theirs and they didn’t ask before taking it out…which is one of the house rules). I tried reflective redirection, so the child would have the opportunity to correct the behavior (Jane, does that belong to you?). The child put the item back (it was a pair of crutches) and them disappeared to pout and cry. My partner took the child’s side and began to comfort the hurt feelings as I was told I was being passive aggressive.
I apologised and said that was not my intention, that the crutches were not hers, and my actions were to prevent anything bad from happening (her getting hurt or something getting broken). Since she went off to pout I never had the opportunity to provide the “why” behind my actions.
The child’s action of breaking the rule were never addressed by the birth parent.
Am I passive aggressive? Am I overreacting by feeling that this wasn’t addressed properly by my partner?

Help! 😫

• Upvotes

I have come to the conclusion that my spouse walks on eggshells around his daughter(11) and ex because his ex constantly tells him how he is always doing everything wrong. So when SD gets upset with him, it’s his fault. If she self harms, it’s his fault. If she fights with her mom, it’s his fault. I think he tries to not cause any kind of conflict by any means because he is afraid he will lose her. This is F’d up. This girl has waaaaay too much control. So much so that he cannot take her phone away when she is being disobedient. His ex scolds him if he says that’s what he wants to do so he doesn’t. He gives away too much of his power and I don’t know if I can handle it anymore. His ex and daughter have too much control in our home and I do not want to live with it anymore. I have told him so many times that he is the parent and he can make the rules HE wants. So it feels impossible to make any true house rules when he doesn’t agree with what I want. How the F do you NACHO?? I cannot do it.

Daughter told me she hates me after SD weekend

Don’t know if I’m searching more for advice or maybe just someone who’s been through this to tell me everything will turn out okay.

Also would like to preface that I’m more than open to and would rather hear this is typical for a 3 year old, even one that is home full time. That’s the ideal scenario for me. I also recognize pregnancy hormones in all of this and do not so much hold resentment towards my SD, just her mother and the sad, toxic environment she creates for her children.

This weekend we had my 8 year old stepdaughter. I’ve been in her life since she was 3, we have a fairly good relationship and she calls me mommy too.

I have a 3 year old daughter and am pregnant with another daughter due in February. My daughter is obsessed with her older sister. This weekend out of the blue she decided she was gonna sleep in the big bed with sissy in their shared room (we’ve co-slept with her since birth) and I’ll be honest, it hurt my heart a little bit but I was proud that she slept well both nights and it made me a little less anxious for the transition come baby #2.

Anytime SD is here (once a week and overnight every other weekend) my daughter forgets I exist bc she’s so excited sissy is here. I’ve never taken it personally, but I do cherish the love bombing every Sunday evening lol. Well after our first weekend of her not sleeping with us, paired with feeling like I hardly got any interaction with her cause I had a long work day Saturday and she had a blast with sissy all weekend, our Sunday evening closes off with her telling me she hated me because I threw the final bits of cracker away after brushing her teeth.

I know children say things. I also recognize my 3 year old has no clue what she’s truly saying when she says those words to me. But what I can’t get past is how she even learned that. I’m a full-time mom, she has time with both grandmothers and her great grandparents once a week. Any play dates are with me and with children her age, the rest of the time she’s at my shop with me under constant supervision. She does watch tv but we don’t allow YouTube, she watches PBS, Bluey and Disney movies. That is the case when SD is here too. I just can’t imagine her getting such a reaction of hatred from any of the Disney movies in our rotation which leads me to believe she learned it this weekend from SD.

It makes me feel protective. I understand the world will influence her in a multitude of ways, however she will be homeschooled and 3 still feels extremely young to know these things. Maybe not…she’s my first. But SD at her mother’s house is wildly unattended to with 3 older siblings who do what they want when they want and say whatever they want without discipline.

I feel so out of control with these negative influences being brought into my house. And it breaks my heart that SD is subjected to these same influences but that’s completely out of our control. My 3 year old however is not.

Again, idk if this is more of a rant or searching for advice or maybe just finding someone who’s been through the same thing. But I feel so alone in this step-parenting journey…my husband just equates it to kids saying things…but where she’s learning it is my concern. And perhaps it was a Disney movie idk. I simply just don’t know and feel sad if the negative influences from another mother are affecting MY daughter, soon to be daughters.

Thanks for reading if you got this far ☹️

Handling a super impressionable ours kid against older SD

10 yr SD. 5 yo ours daughter who is just obsessed with her olde sister (good and bad ways). When she’s on her side she adores her but when she’s upset with her she turns on her. We suspect early signs of adhd but that’s a different story..

Anyways the issue is my daughter picks up on everything and imitates the older SD, and majority of the actions are not good. For example, SD demands constantly from dad in a very rude condescending way. She also hits him and he lets her him him. I’m talking full on punches and kicks. To my horror my own child started randomly hitting her dad the next day in the same manner - something she’s never done especially to dad. Another example is SD will continue to ask for something like “can we go to target” at least 100x over and over until dad caves. My daughter now does the same thing for wanting to go to store, even wanting to take a bath or watch a movie it’s driving me absolutely NUTS!!

How do I manage this? I try to talk with my daughter those behaviors aren’t acceptable and model the reverse but she does not listen.

Hate to say this but her behavior and how she is growing up to be is my nightmare of a child. I also can’t help but feel resentment towards partner and SD bc in my eyes, that has shaped who my daughter is in a negative way.

My partner does not do anything about it. Occasionally he snaps and will yell at SD but that’s when he has his final straw.

I’m considering separation at this point that’s how fed up I am.

Any tips or suggestions on how to navigate this?

Hinge date told me he has 4 kids

Is it bad I said yes to a date even tho I don’t have kids of my own? I have had a successful relationship from a dating app in the past. I am going to tell him I’m not looking for anything casual and actually want to pursue something serious.

Down with the Sickness

Has anyone else experienced a bonus kiddo coming back sick? Like often?

*Full disclosure for anyone who might think anything bad about this, n o t h i n g agaisnt the child. Love them a lot. It's amazing watching them grow etc. They're literally just a child*

This has been like ongoing for months now. And the thing is, it's just things like a cold, or bowel movement issues that cause stress on the kiddo. It's like I have to put them on a pretty strict diet when they come back as like a reset type of deal (that's rough with the normal picky eating stages etc rn) or have to do a lot of chest rubs, cold medicines, vitamins, humidifier, etc. It's tying into behavioral stuff as well if that makes sense.

I got an 8 month old who keeps getting sick by it as well.. and another one on the way sooner then later. And it's just stressful.

Its like I get sweet kiddo back to basically normal and the cycle just repeats itself it *feels* like.

Tips, advice, personal experiences? Please re-read the disclosure if you think I'm petty or whatever in regards to my bonus kid. Im not. It just feels like a lot sometimes and it's not directed at them.

NACHO Update: One month in.

We are one month into the NACHO stepparenting method, and I just have to say that I am beyond happy with the results.
We made some big changes this past month. My DH stood up to HCBM about her 9 years of social media abuse and refused to engage in her gaslighting and lies about that.
As far as SS (11) goes. I can tell that while he is not thrilled about the NACHO method, it has made life easier for everyone. I believe he is realizing that he got a lot more leeway with me than he does with his father.
I used to tell my kids that we would wait to do fun things (movies, minigolf, shopping at the mall, swimming, road trips, etc) until SS came back from his moms. Now I just take them without worrying about how SS will feel about it. I was definitely putting way too much thought into how SS would feel if/when he found out about the things we were doing while he was gone. Now I just tell myself/them that he is with his mom, and it is her responsibility to make sure he is doing fun things on her weeks.
My husband is fully supportive of this, and it has taken a huge load off my mind.
I no longer care about what HCBM posts about us on social media and have not even looked at her social accounts in 25 days. I simply don't care about anything to do with her anymore. Let her talk.
DH deals with all things SS and BM related and I just focus on my job, my kids, and my relationship with DH.
DH and SS are getting more one on one time too because now DH takes him with him whenever he goes somewhere. No more silent treatment or hurtful comments being made by SS because at this time he is not alone with me.
For those who haven't considered NACHO stepparenting. It is a blessing!

HCBM and her MIL came and gave me and DH a “talking to” today

Didn’t see this one coming. I won’t go into too many details but…

At the switch off today, her MIL wanted to give us a talking to about how she felt personally offended about a message DH sent to the doctor (literally not even having to do with her ass).

Lasted a god. Damn. Hour. Skids were cooking in the car even though we said they could go play while the adults talked, but no, HCBM declined.

DH and I stood our ground that we have evidence to back up our claims, but they think the whole court order was a sham so what is evidence to people like that? 🤣

Has anyone wanted to leave, but stayed for the stepkids?

My husband has a lot of issues. I’ve been unhappy and stressed on and off our whole relationship, but I always get pulled back in as we have really happy times too.And I’ve grown attached to his daughter and son. We are about to move out of his parents house and it worries me, he is so disrespectful to me, and won’t give me any space when things get heated and I need time to cool off. I have snap out of it immediately or else he’ll cause a scene yelling at me (in a different room from kids, but they can still hear it). If there is nobody else there to give him a reason to not fight with me how he wants to, what kind of environment will that be for me and the kids?

Their bio mom lives 20 min away, but has no contact with them except a happy birthday, merry Christmas text a couple times a year. Their grandparents are elderly, their uncle is creepy, and the aunt they’re very close to is in her 70s.

So they will be left with dad, and he has alcohol problems.

I understand they are not my bio kids, but I love them and treat them like they are. The guilt I would feel abandoning them sucks, but I want to be happy. I think I would just feel irresponsible leaving them in such a crappy position.

Has anyone been through this? Or going through it? My family thinks I’ve taken on too much responsibility because the kids parents need to step up and it “isn’t my issue” but I just don’t think that way, as these are kids who didn’t ask for any of this. I would love to hear some opinions and/or experience.

It’s awkward.

I have been married to my husband for about 3 months but we have been together for 3 years. I have a daughter (17) that I have full and complete custody of (her dad is a deadbeat) my husband has a daughter (13) who he shares 50/50 custody with his ex wife.

I don’t really care for his daughter. We don’t have much in common, she likes anime and just stuff I’m not interested in. She’s just very different than my daughter in all aspects. My daughter and I have an amazing and really close relationship since it’s just been the two of us.

I really enjoy spending one on one time with my daughter and so I always make plans for us to go out and do fun stuff. I am a NACHO “step mom” to my husband’s daughter since I don’t really desire THAT kind of relationship with her. The problem is she wants me to “be her mom” and she always wants to tag along with us when we have one on one plans.

I don’t mind if she tags along every once in a while but I don’t really want her hanging with us all the time. She should be spending her custody time with her dad, not me. The problem with that though is her dad does not plan ANYTHING for her when she’s here. He thinks her being here is enough. I kind of feel bad for her but she’s not mine so I tell myself that it’s not my responsibility to keep her entertained or to take her out to do fun things or “be her mom” like she has mentioned SOOO many times to me. (Her mom sucks and pretty much ignores her) I’m polite to her but that’s about it.

My daughter is almost an adult and she doesn’t want a preteen tagging along with us constantly either. I don’t want to be a jerk but I want to maintain that I am not her mom, I am her dad’s husband.

How do you maintain a “dad’s wife” relationship without hurting her feelings or making her feel left out?

Unsafe house with baby

I wasn’t sure how to title this and it’s probably an understatement from what’s happening but I truly don’t know what to do. In all fairness this ISNT my story (sorta). So my step mom and my dad have been together for almost 4-5 years, I’m not sure and have a 6 month old baby together. My dad has had struggles with drugs and alcohol and over the years because he’s had an actual home (for once) he’s fallen back into doing drugs and alcohol and has gotten abusive. Not to me but to my step mom and while you would normally just say “well just tell her to leave”, they are in debt together and have my brother, and she has no where else to go because he WILL find her. There have been many times where I’ll come over for a week or so and she’ll show me the bruises or nasty cuts that he gives her when they fight. It’s been hard because he’s so fucking hard to convince that he’s in the wrong, he’s a hard narcissist and it’s so exhausting. He could be high as hell, while being drunk and in the middle of cheating with some random prostitute and he’d still look you in the eyes and tell you you’re insane and you’re wrong and YOURE the problem. My step mom just got off maternity leave and she earns way less than before and he earns way more because he’s found a new high paying (ish) job. He refuses to give her any money, even it’s for hygiene purposes. The other day she couldn’t buy PADS because she needed to get formula and he wouldn’t give her anymore. Tomorrow morning she’s supposed to leave for AZ with her cousin or something for a baby shower, she would have to have is extremely cheap, he wastes A LOT monthly-ish on beer and alcohol that he buys DAILY plus also the drugs he’s been going crazy with and REFUSES to give her any money for a FAMILY trip. It’s not just this bug it’s also that he gets really aggressive and belligerent when he has as little as half as one beer. The other day me and my boyfriend were over and I had my feet on him and he got all pissed about it and before we left “playfully” slapped my face lightly because he was started talking about me not ending up pregnant. It’s either this or he makes really rude or embarrassing comments EVERYTIME. One very common joke with me is about my butt being flat..? I generally find it weird to make any comment on those things but wtv. I dont know what to do or what to make my step mom do because no matter how much she’s tried to leave or do something he won’t fucking leave. I’ve debated calling the cops for her but where does that leave her with all the money and the debt? I’ve been debating whether to start a go fund me for her but I don’t think anyone would actually donate to it… someone tell me wtf to do.

Tired of arguing

Last year during a random conversation my partner and I agreed that at some point when we renovate his daughter’s room she could have the nice bedroom suit I brought before we got together. Some that conversation the relationship with his daughter and I has deteriorated to the point I no longer call her my step daughter and she’s just my partners daughter - I’ve had to nacho so then I can stay with my partner for our young sons sake. The only time we argue is because of her. I don’t want another argument but I no longer want her to have my bedroom suite and I know he’s going to not like that and we will have a huge argument. She’s so incredibly disrespectful, screams and hits me and just horrible to be around as she’s gotten older (she’s now 13 and was 5 when we met). How do I say I don’t want her using the furniture? Shes not allowed to use any of my things and I had forgotten about this arrangement until my partner brought it up last weekend. Amy advice would be greatly appreciated

Is it bad

Is it bad that I get maybe jealous or maybe upset that my husband is super affectionate towards his 8yo daughter while I’ve been telling him for 3 years he’s barely affectionate towards me lol I’m also 8 months pregnant so idk if it’s the hormones but I find it a little sad even why can’t he just be affectionate towards me too? 😢

Rant I guess

So I'm currently in Seattle and HATE it. I'm waiting to hear back from a job on the east coast and am going to take it because it's closer to family and sometimes having a fresh start is just good for you. Now saying this. My partner has two kids whos ex is extremely toxic and they kids don't listen or respect what anyone has to say. I'm at my wits end. I'm moving first because we don't want to move the kids mid school year. But I gave him to option to not move with me and he can just move back with his mom because she's always trying to involve herself with our lives. I'm just tired and feel like once I make this move I'll enjoy being on my own and not having this stress. I don't know what I'm looking to gain from posting this here I just have no one to talk to about this since I don't want my family to know just the bad things going on so they don't pass judgement on them

Parents of Adult Stepkids-Opinions Welcome

I am a 44F married to my 50M husband for nearly 8 years, together for 10. He has 2 daughters, 27 & 24 and I have 3 daughters 24, 19, & 17. For the most part, everyone gets along and my husband has worked hard to mend relationships with his girls after a very rough divorce from their mother. Currently 2 of my children still live at home.
The issue I have is with my husband’s oldest daughter (who is now a mother herself). Since day 1, she has been hell bent on causing trouble within our blended family. She was in active addiction when my husband and I got together (meth mostly but any hard drugs she could get her hands on). She was in and out of rehabs and juvenile detention, as she was also involved with some bad people and making very poor choices.
The week of our wedding she had a mental health break and went absolutely nuts, causing my in-laws (her grandparents) to have her arrested and held on a mental health hold. The entire week leading up to our wedding she made sure every minute of my husband’s day was focused around her. The night before the wedding and the morning of, she sent my husband hundreds of text messages saying some very awful things to him because she wanted to be involved in the wedding (since she only met me 3 weeks prior we did not move things around to include her, we had instead asked her to walk with her Dad down the aisle which we later asked her to sit in the congregation as her behaviour was too unpredictable and we were uncertain how she would behave in front of 200 guests-husbands idea). I also asked my mother in law not to bring her to the bridal suite as I did not want any stress or drama on my wedding day. It’s important to note, my mother in law favors this girl above all others and my stepdaughter is very spoiled and not used to being told no. MIL brought her into the bridal suite anyway and I was horrified to see SD wearing not the tasteful dress we picked out, but a skimpy dress hardly covering her body with knee high boots. She was in the suite taking photos and posting them online for people to see before the ceremony even started. When I did a first look with my brothers (my dad passed away a year and a half before my wedding), she threw a fit because she wasn’t allowed to be a part of it. She seemingly behaved the rest of the day, and MIL had her picked up early before the bar opened.
Addiction continued and she went down a very bad path. We tried to help her, but ultimately her unpredictably and volatility made her an unsafe person to be around my younger children and we had to give her some tough love and go no contact with her for a period of 3 years. At this point her mother had also kicked her out. My in laws helped her get on social assistance and lined up an apartment for her. We helped out with sending grocery money and necessities like clothing & footwear sent through my MIL.
Fast forward 3 years and she asks her sister to call my husband to go over for a talk “just them”. He goes. She’s discovered in active addiction that she is 4 months pregnant. She is trying to quit drinking and drugs cold turkey for her baby and is seemingly in a good place. She apologizes to me for all of the horrible things she’s said and done towards me and my children in the past and we all decide to move on and give her the support she needs going forward as the baby’s father is a loser and not involved.
Sadly, our grandson is about to turn 3 and she is still up to her old games. She is off hard drugs. But her manipulations and drama are never ending. She constantly stirs up drama, makes herself out to be the victim and drags the entire family into it trying to get my MIL on her side. Every event, every birthday party she’s invited to, it’s always something and she has a constant need to be the centre of attention. No one can have a birthday without her creating some kind of issue and creating tension. I have made the decision to not invite her to things hosted in our home. This has caused yet another big family issue as she runs to my MIL & FIL to drag them into it. Now it’s a big family issue. She has managed to divide the family once again. In laws are on her side. Husband is supporting me as he is also exhausted from the constant manipulation, blame games and whining coming from his daughter. She’s an adult and it’s time she stops acting the same age as her son. When my husband spoke to her she sent me and my kids a copy & pasted apology but clearly doesn’t get the point. My in laws think I have to respond to her and so do my children. I’m tired and out of chances and fucks to give. Am I being unrealistic in expecting her to act her age and not constantly try to pull the attention onto herself? Am I wrong in wanting to allow other family members to have a day to celebrate them rather than have her steal the show with her dramatic tactics?
Sorry for the long post. There are so many more examples I could give, so much more I could say. There’s just not enough time lol

Help

Please dont judge. I (24F) got married to my husband (30M) about a year ago. Have been experiencing the stepmom life and role for 2 years now. I always thought it would eventually get better but it hasn’t…

He knows and I’ve been open about the fact that I feel someday I MIGHT just feel like i can’t do it anymore. The stepmom blues are really making it hard. Knowing that no matter how much effort i put, the kids will never be mine, or see me as their actual mom. At first i was okay with this but i guess now im not. We have them 24/7. BM might see them twice a week.

Husband also says conflicting things about future kids, which honestly just means he doesn’t want them. I think i do. Not right now, but i definitely will.

Will it get better? Am i just wasting my time?

Sharing affection

So me and my partner have been together for a year, we have moved quick to some people it may seem and I’m an active “step parent” to my other half’s little boy.
We have him on weekends, and I’ve noticed more frequently it’s like my affection is being pushed to the side and my partners son is getting more and more jealous if we are having a cuddle he will push between us. (4years old for reference)
My partner is ADHD so he gets overstimulated quickly so when the little one is being clingy I’ve noticed I don’t get much or if at all any affection on a weekend. We both work full time, and often have late finishes on different days so even on an evening through the week often we are too tired to show affection, and sometimes even snapping more.

Has anyone experienced this? Am I being dramatic or shall I raise this?

Likely leaving my fiancé/daughters father due to the baby mom drama & I am forced to raise my undisciplined step son

Girl was a one night stand. She’s a dead beat. I love my step son but I was lied to in the beginning that the child wasn’t his, she refused a blood test and I got pregnant and only then I found out the truth. Mom ended up being a total dead beat, we have a child of our own together, plus I work full time, I’m basically forced to raise my step son and tend to him 90% of the time. Mom doesn’t get him much. Used to abandon him for weeks and even months at a time too. They don’t discipline him either & his behavior is bad. He is 8 years old and already has gotten several phone calls home and a referral and didn’t get in trouble, but I’ve told my fiancé I don’t mind helping but I need help with your son as this is too much on me…. I work and have our daughter to raise and am about to go back to college and am dealing with other personal struggles. I’ve told him it’s all too much on me, and he guilt trips me and even went as far as to threaten me….. I’ve had to call out of WORK before bc I couldn’t find anyone to watch my step son….. I’m sorry that’s just not my responsibility, all while his mom sits on her fat lazy a**????? My fiancé never holds her accountable either. She’s a terrible person and mother btw. I’ve gotten to the point I resent the situation entirely and I feel the only option I have left is to leave bc I’m not respected just used, and at the end of the day it’s affecting my parenting to our daughter and she comes first. For example last year at 8 years old he threw tantrums so bad about going to school in the mornings it made my daughter late to school several times….. I stay stressed over it too and that’s not fair to my daughter. Again I love him, I love my fiancé too and I don’t mind at all helping, but this isn’t that. This is me being disrespected and taken advantage of…… and used as a babysitter. (Before he got legal custody he had to pay her 1k a month all while WE were tending to his son she’d abandon him for months at a time….. he was paying child support for a child she didn’t have, we did….) luckily eventually he was able to hire a lawyer got primary split custody and child support was dropped but surprisingly here lately she has actually been keeping him mostly on her weeks, but before she’d keep him a few nights then not see him for weeks, NEVER consistent ever. And her getting him like this absolutely will not last. Again she doesn’t work either…. Anytime her and her bf fight she pawns him off and doesn’t see him for weeks. She’s obsessed with my fiancé too and jelous of me. Again she was a drunken one night stand he never wanted anything to do with her. I just have to think of my daughter and the drama is too much for me, and I’m sorry but he’s not my child and not my responsibility to raise…. Again I love him and wouldn’t mind at all helping but this absolutely isn’t that. Again my fiancé threatened to take insurance off my car last week bc I told him raising his son was too much on me and I needed some help with him…Any advice?

Husbands lawyer kicked me out.

I never truly experienced an encounter like I have today.
My husband has extreme anxiety and OCD, so I explained to the lawyer over the phone that I’d be helping him keep organized and I’d help redirect his train of thought. The OCD can overwhelm him at times and cause brain fog, etc. It’s why we hired a lawyer. To help be his voice.

Today I went with him to the meeting (I do not have any plans to attend court) they were speaking and my husband looked at me with a face that said “help.” I gently explained what he’s trying to say. I misspoke and said “emergency motion“ when I meant to say “emergency order.” The lawyer flipped on me. Yelled at me saying “I don’t have time for this and that” and blah blah. I stayed silent the entire time that he just belittled me and told me to leave. When I was gone he told my husband to “figure it out and stop letting your wife control you.”

I was flabbergasted. Court is tomorrow so we can’t find a new lawyer but holy crap. Now I’m sitting here trying to figure out what the heck I did wrong.

Moral of the story.… we can never win.

p.s. the emergency order I was trying to ask for was therapy. To advocate for the child.…. because who else is going to do it?

Did you reach out to your stepchild after separating/divorcing their parent?

I’m about two months into a separation from my husband, and I’ve been thinking a lot about whether I should eventually reach out to my stepdaughter. I’m not 100% certain, but I’m afraid she might carry some feelings that she was partly to blame for the separation, and I don’t want her carrying that.

She’s a senior in high school, and I was in her life for about five years. Our relationship had its complexities, and the stepfamily dynamic was honestly one of the harder parts of my marriage, so I’m not necessarily looking to maintain an ongoing relationship or insert myself into her life after the divorce.

What I do keep thinking about is whether I should send her one simple message at some point. Something along the lines of: I’m sorry your dad and I couldn’t make our marriage work. None of this was your fault. I’m rooting for you and genuinely hope you have a wonderful life.

I don’t want to do it to make myself feel better, get reassurance from her, reopen anything, or put her in the middle between her dad and me. If I did it, I wouldn’t expect a response.

For those of you who divorced/separated from your stepchild’s parent: did you ever say something directly to the child afterward? If you did, are you glad you did? If you didn’t, are you glad you left it alone?

exchange day tomorrow mild blues

I have a great relationship with my step daughter, and partner. We have 50/50….. but damn those weeks off go by quick. My partner had medical complications this weekend from a procedure Friday. He is okay but we spent a lot of the weekend in the hospital and I’m exhausted.

Not complaining about exchanging tomorrow but just getting that sense of unease because I know even the best weeks are exhausting.

does anyone get nervous when you haven’t heard anything from HCBM in awhile?

it’s been about three months since we’ve had any drama or heard anything bad from BM.

this is after a really shitty six months FULL of nonstop drama. I’m getting nervous that something big is coming.

is this PTSD????
