  • Swap back button position
  • Press to unlock with fingerprint
  • Resizable Quick Settings Menu
  • One-time precise location
  • Enhanced “Mark as lost” feature
  • Apps in Bubbles
  • Native Game Controller Remapping
  • Per-app Dark Mode Override

Introducing Android 17 | Help Guide

As with every update, Android Adaptive Battery may reset. This means all apps that were automatically restricted will now be able to run in the background. Just like a brand new phone, you have to wait for at least a week or two for Adaptive Battery to relearn your app usage pattern, thereafter, you should get back your original screen-on and standby time.

Been looking for a bumper case as I really want to showcase the rear of the phone. Official case is ok, but after a while it became shiny and fingerprints really stand out.

Alumania just released their bumper cases for the 1 VIII series. Looks great! Buttons are nice and clicky.

Discussion My review on Sony Xperia 1 V as an Editor

This is my first Sony phone ever, the XQ-DQ72 512gb version. I'm upgrading from my old Oppo A9 phone that's 7 years old, and I am very happy to say it's 99% an upgrade in every way.

I've had the phone now for 10 hours and I spent a long time tinkering with the settings, I found a lot of good stuff and some bad quirks that I think doesn't get talked about at all before I bought this.

I'll start with the speakers, I don't use them much but the bass is lacking compared to my older phone though I find the movie mode in Dolby sound helps this a lot. This ties in to my next point which is that Dolby doesn't save separate presets for your earphones and speakers and you have to change them manually. I find the balanced option is suited for my apple earpods when I used Dolby atmos on my older phone, however the stereo was too cramped by default. Luckily there's stereo widening options here that really solve that problem and makes it sound even better than my old phone when it's set to near stereo.

Next is the display, this was also my first switch to OLED and the blacks are just as good as you'd think coming from an IPS. I didn't notice any of the banding people talked about gradients that were near close to black, but something close which I'll mention again later. However the green tint on the 120Hz with low brightness seems to be universal even on my device so I just have that off unless I want game enhancer to set an app in that framerate, and then fix the tint with the color modes. By default the display is set to cool in Standard mode, which when you use the medium setting will still be more yellow. I find that custom mode with +90 blue will fix that tint and you'll notice the greys will actually look grey without warmth.

Now for the weird part with Xperia's color management. I notice the standard mode makes the system colors look appropriate, but the app themselves will look way too saturated for its own good. Creator mode fixes this issue but then the opposite happens, apps are fixed and yet the system looks too washed out of color. The appropriate way of setting this up is having it on Standard mode and then turn on auto creator mode, then press that auto mode and it'll let you add all the apps that you need to be in the right colors which is a lot of them. I get that even Windows color management is terrible since browsers desaturated when using wide gamuts, forcing you to change the browser color space to something like ScRGB to see the appropriate colors.

Probably one of my favorite parts of this is the side sense, which is very similar to my older phone but this one has more gestures. I find getting screenshots with the xperia pretty hard since the power button seems to be too flat to feel on your finger if you're actually holding it or not. So the side sense lets you use the up, inward and down sliding for that. Though I notice the side sense isnt present in landscape mode unlike my older phone, but game enhancer seems to fix that issue by letting you turn the shutter button itself into a screenshot which is great. Though would be nice to have it in landscape, what I don't understand is it lets you customize the main app launcher but not the pop up window launcher. In my older phone the sidebar would open apps in pop up windows by default so it was really neat for dual tasks, I don't like the split screen mode it feels janky.

Overall that's my gripes with it so far and they're mostly fixable. SD card really makes me happy since I had 70k photos on my old phone and it just read it all in like 15 minutes and cooled down without overheating. There were a lot of missing apps like the weather, notes, calculator etc but I just downloaded some open source ones which might be better than the ColourOS versions I'm used to. I'll be using this as my main phone a lot and will give another update when I spend more time

HELP Xperia 5 IV Japan SOG09 (I think) in USA help

I bought an Xperia 5 IV from an ebay seller. The listing said it's an XQ-CQ54 and so did the About phone page of Android when I got it. At the time I didn't know about Band 71 and what the result of missing it is. I put my US Mobile/Verizon SIM in it and did get both data and voice, but the signal was very weak and only LTE instead of 5G. I found an XDA forum page talking about how to get Band 71 5G support on European models (which the CQ54 was supposed to be) that said you can flash the modem firmware from a US model on the CQ54 to get USA 5G support - tried that and it stopped connecting to cell towers at all, kept getting Mobile Network State as Disconnected. Flashing the CQ54 modem back didn't help, nor did flashing the whole CQ54 package from XperiFirm with newflasher. When I tried to use Xperia Companion, it detected the phone as an SOG09 - the Japanese version, NOT a CQ54. I put the IMEI number into an imei check website and that said it maps to an A204SO - Japanese SoftBank model. So clearly I got a Japanese model that the seller cross flashed with something. Flashing SOG09 firmware (entire package) got it to connect to mobile data with my US Mobile / Verizon SIM but voice won't connect. A204SO firmware gives zero connectivity just like the CQ54 and CQ62 firmwares.

How can I recover this at least back to being able to connect to voice and LTE even if the signal is weak? I can't figure out what combination of firmware the seller put, and it's too late to return it. I have the tadump file that newflasher saved prior to the first flash but not sure what to do with it / what to flash it on top of.

any help would be much appreciated!

Question XZ1C Top Speaker/Headset Issue

Apparently this is a common issue with these phones, but just curious if anyone has found a more permanent fix for it?

The top speaker/headset doesn't work on my phone at all after 3 months of use. It was a high quality refurb model, and so I assume the previous speaker, if there ever was one, was replaced before it was sold to me.

Before I go ahead and replace/repair the speaker, does anyone know of any more preventative measures I can take to keep it from failing again?

I realize this post is very much a shot in the dark, but just figured I'd ask.

Thanks for taking the time to read if you've gotten this far.

Cheers!

Question Was STAMINA Mode functionality ever restored?

It was the best battery saving feature in any Android phone, and Google destroyed its functionality with Android Doze. It's been about a decade since then, have Sony been able to bring back Stamina mode?

Xperia 1 V trying to buy

is anyone trying to sell their 1V? Must be a US model XQ-DQ62, ideally in decent or better condition-original box and charger a plus. I may consider ones in poor or very poor condition if they are fully functional as far as the main board goes and can be made nice with a new screen frame and back panel. DM/comment if interested.

Discussion Xperia 1 VIII Dolby??

I can hear no difference whatsoever (through the phone speakers) when I switch Dolby on.

I find the speakers to have a narrow soundstage compared to my Samsung S23 Ultra. How can I get a better sound out of the inbuilt speakers?

Question No automatic pocket detection?

This is not a major thing, I always switch my screen off before stowing it away, but I'm sure the last 2 Android phones I've had (the oldest dating back to 2018!) switched the screen off automatically when they detected they were in a pocket or bag, and I'm low key shocked the 1 VI doesn't! At this point I thought it had been baked into Android itself!

Another minor thing I miss from my last phone and have come to appreciate, you could set it so if you double tapped the screen within 5" of it switching off it would switch on without you needing to unlock it again, handy for when you were reading something and it timed out. It was a nice feature, though the Sony's fingerprint reader is so much faster than my last phone's that it's only a minor loss. And yeah I know there's the eye detection option in settings so it never switches off while you're looking at it, but sometimes you have it on the desk and aren't looking at it directly.

NEWS Potential major Xperia 1 VIII Android 17 issue

EDIT: it's happening on Pixel phones as well so most definitely do not update to version 73.1.A.2.61!

Just saw this on my news feed while randomly scrolling. I JUST got a 1 VIII myself but now I'm gonna keep an eye out so my phone doesn't update to A17 😭

Question Upgrading from Pixel 9 Pro to Snapdragon 8 Elite - Is custom ROM/rooting stability worth it with Android 17? (XQ-GE74)

I’ve owned several Pixels and currently use a Pixel 9 Pro, but I want to switch to a Snapdragon 8 Elite device and get away from Google’s heavy push into AI.

I have plenty of experience rooting and modding from the old XDA days, but seeing reports about Android 17 breaking carrier 5G compatibility on the 1M8 in USA gives me pause. I’m looking for a phone that mostly "just works." I don't mind fixing an occasional ADB tweak, but I don't want a daily driver that requires constant troubleshooting after every system update.

I searched here and XDA but haven't found a definitive answer on the current state of 5G stability on Android 17. Is switching away from Pixel for custom modding a bad idea right now?
