Discussion I love Snyder, what are your thoughts?
I honestly don’t understand the hate Zack Snyder gets. My brother and two of my friends hate his work and call him overrated, but I completely disagree. I think Snyder is one of the most artistic and visually revolutionary directors in the superhero genre.
What’s crazy is that I actually disliked Batman v Superman when I first saw it. After rewatching it several times, though, I’ve come to appreciate it so much more. It may not be perfect, and I understand the criticisms about the pacing and story being all over the place, but I genuinely love the vision behind it.
We got a broken Batman and a broken Superman, both struggling with fear, trauma, responsibility, and finding their way back to hope. That’s what makes the movie work for me. Snyder wasn’t just making Batman fight Superman—he was telling a story about two damaged heroes finding their purpose again.
I also think Henry Cavill is a much better Superman for that vision than David Corenswet. Cavill brought a seriousness and presence to Superman that I personally connected with.
I wish Snyder had been allowed to finish his universe. You don’t have to love every decision he made, but I think his vision deserved to be completed.
And regardless of how anyone feels about Snyder, I think it’s important to remember that he was also dealing with the suicide of his daughter, Autumn, during Justice League. That was an unimaginable tragedy, and I have a lot of respect for him for stepping away to deal with his family.
I’m not saying Snyder is perfect. I’m saying there’s a huge difference between “his style isn’t for me” and “he’s an overrated director.” Personally, I think his work is far more artistic and ambitious than people give him credit for. I just wish we could have seen the Snyder universe fully realized.
