When he hits you with 'the usual, boss?' you know you're family

I used to go to a family-run Thai restaurant; parents ran the cash register, grandparents cooked and the kids waited tables. I used to order the Pad La Na ever time; the kid asked if I want the usual, I said yes. The grandmother came to my table and asked if I wanted the usual, I was puzzled, I nodded. She said "No". I'm really confused, "Uhhh, you're out?". "NO, you come here, that's all you order! Look at menu, we have other things!". I was really taken back, I've never been told "No, you can't order that". She then says "Chicken yellow curry is good today, I make you that. You no like, I make something else". She just turns and walks away to make me dinner. The kids are thoroughly Americanized and tells me "Don't be mad, she talks to family like that and you eat here often enough to be considered family". I had to move a few years later, I miss that restaurant. Oh, and the yellow curry was pretty good.

Tbh, it sounds like the entire interaction was your fault. Where did you get off ordering the Pad La Na when the chicken yellow curry was good that day?! I hope you said please and thank you and chewed with your mouth shut.

These days when I go to a new Thai restaurant, I always order the Pad Thai first. If they can't make that well, I won't give it a second chance. My fave has five degrees of hot.

I always order the Pad Thai first. If they can't make that well, I won't give it a second chance. My fave has five degrees of hot.

The trouble with that is that although I love spicy Pad Thai too, it is not supposed to be a spicy dish. Thusly, a place that makes it the "correct" way would get a lower rating from you and I than a place that makes it the "wrong" way which is spicy.

I'm like that with new cafes and and eggs benedict.

If it's anything other than poached eggs with bacon and hollandaise on english muffin, then I can't trust they can run a food business. And getting the hollandaise right isn't trivial either.

Same principle with any pizza joint - go with just a cheese pie/slice first. If they can't manage the basics, no amount or combination of toppings will fix it.

1

u/Prune-These 10h ago

I'd say pepperoni for the basic but that's a good approach for any restaurant.

Crust/dough and sauce makes the pizza IMO. If either are shit then nothing else really matters.

the late writer Lewis Grizzard said that if you're not sure what to order at a new diner/roadside restaurant, order a cheeseburger.

It's easy to make and a good cook can make a pretty good one without much trouble, if they screw up making a cheeseburger you know not to go back.

You should try Khao pad gai instead fried rice with chicken. Its usually more spicy than pad thai.

I used to stop by a Chinese restaurant frequently on Friday late afternoons for takeout after I got off of work for my girlfriend and myself.. The time that I went the staff was on their dinner break and I would place my order with the owner and she would always mix me a Mai Tai (on the house) and we sit and chat and I used to love her stories about growing up in her home country.. Priceless 💯

tbh I can't imagine ordering the same exact thing at a thai restaurant every time, there's so much good stuff going on there I find it hard to decide on just one thing each time

1

u/Prune-These 10h ago

I got out of that rut, the restaurant in my neighborhood is pretty good. A few times I asked to give me what they think is good that day.

u/JalapenoPopPoop 9h ago

Found a new favorite?

u/Prune-These 9h ago

There are three Thai places in my neighborhood, one is vegetarian. The one I like I can order online for pickup and select the spicy level.

I went to a Thai restaurant near my house for the first time with family. That day it was raining hard, and the restaurant was empty. The waiting staff was incredibly friendly, and by the end of meal, the chef came out and asked if everything was good. It was an awesome experience.

2

u/NoDontDoThatCanada 10h ago

Had a restaurant that was cafeteria style ordering and the lady would just put in what she thought was best that day for me. She would fill any plate with what other people ordered but she stopped doing that for me. It was tasty and l miss them. They retired and their kids ruined it.

I read that the small Chinese restaurants were dying out because their kids don’t want to take it over.

God I miss the local Chinese place. All the food in the steam trays was garbage, but if you sat and ordered they had my favorite everything. They had really really good Wok Hay. Beef or chicken chow fun, tomato beef chow mein with curry, walnut prawns, fried prawns, minced pork w/eggplant, clay pot, guan lo wonton, but most especially the potsickers. I would walk in and whoever was working would just as "One or two?" for how many orders of potstickers I wanted. Often I was in a hurry and would take them to go. How good were they? Sometimes I would eat both orders in the car before I got home. My brothers in Christ, I lived eight blocks away.

Ha, local spot has dumplings I liked. The owner said no get the pot stickers since we make those from scratch. Now that’s all I order.

That’s different though. Some is cultural and some is you’re a regular so she wants to go the extra mile for you.

Restaurants like this might as well keep my card on file and a pic of me on the wall because I’m coming back several times a week

u/Fierro_nights 12h ago

Yes it’s very nice when visiting a place that’s not high turn over and visit familiar. Especially if you eat at the bar for example

Some find it weird, I see it as a free skip the line pass. Used to go to this bagel spot near my old place, would get the same sandwich every time. Once I became a regular, I never had to wait in line to place an order again. Counter guy would see me walk in, look at me, I'd nod, he'd nod. Sandwich got made, it was great.

3

u/LIONLDN 8h ago

I have a place like that, and I only go there once a month, but as soon as I walk in, before I even get to the counter, the guy remembers & starts preparing what I need, which is pretty impressive considering they have at least a few hundred people in & out of there every single day 🤯

There was this pizza place in my hometown which unfortunately has closed. Anyway, I'd order there so often as a kid that the literal second they heard my voice, they were like "The usual? You got it!" and it was actually really nice.

u/twistyle 12h ago

And he saw you for the first time.

My taco truck guy said this to me every Friday. I loved it. Moved away a few years ago and still miss those burritos.

1

u/imbogey 2h ago

Damn as a taco lover your last word got me a bit off guard.

1

u/sheezy520 2h ago

Don’t get me wrong. The tacos were great but the burritos were on another level.

4

u/Annoyingkeming 11h ago

"Hello again my friend!" that's the good stuff right there.

4

u/DonJuanPrawns 11h ago

Or the "great choice boss" protect that man

6

u/FluteGunner 11h ago

Used to live in a flat in the block above a kebab shop. I remember the first time he asked me if I wanted the usual was the first time I felt like I was at home lol

5

u/El_Zilcho 11h ago

When you exchange 'the look' whilst in the queue and he starts preparing the order so it's ready for you as soon as you get the counter and order.

Or when the bartender sees your face and pours what you like always.

1

u/Birphon 6h ago

Use to happen when I was a student at a cafe in a supermarket. He'd see me walk in and hold up a cup and I'd give a thumbs up and by the time I did my breakfast/lunch shop I'd have a coffee ready for me, he even threw staff discount on quite a few times. He left to become a coffee bean roaster and a barista at the coffee bean roasting place as well just down the road , huge pay increase iirc so W to him

1

u/alyaqd95 1h ago

I used to go to a place like that, one time I was short on money for a water bottle, he said it's on the house
