At some point he will realize his mistake and think about it the rest of his life.

Even if he kept one bar, that's $200,000 worth of gold that he has to figure out how to move, which will take a lot of time and effort. Getting caught is greater because people know he found gold. If he had 50 bars, figuring out how to move the first one would be just as difficult but he'd have 49 more and the next one would be easier.

All he did was give 10 million to someone else.

222

u/Nowhere_Man_Forever 6d ago edited 6d ago

Straight up gold is easy to move through. You just cut pieces off and sell it. Just go to different stores if you're paranoid, but it's pretty easy. Obviously if you go in with a big gold bar they may have questions but it's really easy to sell smaller gold chunks

72

u/WeBelieveIn4 6d ago

They don’t ask how you just happen to have a chunk of gold?

220

u/JamiePhsx 6d ago

Take up jewlcrafting or something. Then when they ask why you’re selling a necklace with a lumpy potato face of jesus you can say because it’s ugly.

u/tyrodos99 6d ago

Have you ever been into a Cash 4 Gold kind of store? They're not exactly in the business of asking a bunch of questions. Plus, lots of people buy gold as a wealth storage method and some people do home scrap reclamation from electronics so it's not totally crazy for someone to just have a chunk of gold. As long as you're selling small enough quantities (a few grams at a time, at different stores so it looks less suspicious) nobody would ever bat an eye. If you came in every week selling 1 gram bits of gold then maybe the store might start asking questions but for small quantities every so often? Nobody will care. Just keep the total value under like $1000 per transaction and you're fine.

36

u/spamlitter 6d ago

What would happen if he just said to the shop that he inherited it after his dad's death? I'm mean, they are not the ones doing the IRS/tax work anyways right?

39

u/b0w3n 6d ago

Yeah they really don't care, you just take a small bath on the price of it because it's not stamped.

But you'd be able to move it essentially unnoticed. If you're super paranoid, just sell a few thousand at a time, sell it to different ones, take a day trip out of state to sell so it's not all going through the same 3 people (make sure they're different companies).

Also you'd only really be paying tax on your "gains" I think. (Make sure you pay the tax man that's the quickest way to get found out)

5

u/TheRealBingBing 6d ago edited 6d ago

Depending where you are, selling more than a specific amount needs to be reported.

Keep pieces small and go to multiple places. Or make friends with a refiner

I would probably melt down into jankie rounds or bars 1-5 oz and just go to various coin shops over a decade or two. I mean for 10 1oz coins a year you could live easily double it and you are living comfortably. Even taking a hit on scrap gold would be worth this.

17

u/FalseEstimate 6d ago

I metal detect and have found gold. Gold is worth A LOT you only need a small chunk. Plus you could melt it down to make a “nugget” look even more convincing.

15

u/emlgsh 6d ago

The places that buy chunks of gold for cash traditionally make a point of asking as few questions as possible to complete the transaction.

9

u/ShoddyRelief6657 6d ago

He’s Belgian, just say his great grandparents were in ww2 and his family found a bunch of gold with these cool eagle pictures on it

7

u/Aiyon 6d ago

I just dont know why you couldn't sell the whole bar. "It was my grandad's. I think he bought it back in the 80s? i was putting off selling it until I needed the money"

12

u/Nowhere_Man_Forever 6d ago

Cash for gold place doesn't have 200 grand laying around on hand and they're going to ask a lot more questions about it, and anyone you sell to will probably make you fill out tax forms and shit for that much, which alerts the government who may start doing some digging about whether your grandpa was into buying bug gold bars. The risk is probably pretty low, but it's a lot more hassle than it's probably worth.

Belgian law states that if no one claims ownership (with legal proof), and no owner can be found, he gets half.

123

u/reddeze2 6d ago

Who gets other half?

172

u/Interesting_Fig_4718 6d ago

so belgian law states that if you find something like treasure and no one claims it in the next 5 years, it's split 50//50 between whoever finds it and whoever owns the property the treasure was found on.

125

u/GeronimoDK 6d ago

That's actually a nice way to make sure that people actually turn shit in instead of keeping it.

I bet there's also some kind of finders reward if they do find an owner?

57

u/Interesting_Fig_4718 6d ago

in belgium there isnt, unlike germany which is 3-5% and the netherlands which is around 10%. you can get compensated if the owner wants to but it's up to them and not enforced.

I wouldn’t have found anything. What gold?

126

u/howimetyourcakeshop 6d ago

In all seriousness, this. I would just keep my mouth shut, melt some of the gold into new small bars and sell one off from time to time for a couple of grand. None the wiser.

43

u/MelangeBot 6d ago

Not bars. Learn how to make crude rings, but nobody has pure gold rings so learn how to mix em with other metals. Then once in a while sell a ring. So you found a weird ring in the belongings of your grandma who just passed, it happens. Don't tell anyone. Here I'll pay 10% under market if you don't tell anybody (cause the rest of the family does not know).

You would come a long way with such tactics.

52

u/Garchompisbestboi 6d ago

It's also a great opportunity to farm enchanting xp before selling the rings if you want to maximise your returns. I remember fortify sneak producing the highest value rings back when I last did a playthrough.

For a student with a summer job working on a Belgian building site, “money down the drain” has taken on a whole new meaning: excavating the trenches for a sewage system, he stumbled across a hidden trove of gold worth an estimated €9m (£8m).

The student, who has not been further identified, was working with colleagues on the site of a former brewery on Van Langenhovestraat in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, about 19 miles (30km) north-west of Brussels, when they made the discovery on Tuesday.

Brewing on the site began in 1899 and ceased in 1970, and the listed property – the wrought-iron gates of which still bear the initials “VA” – is being completely renovated by the social welfare organisation CAW Oost-Vlaanderen to create new offices and housing.

The building contractors, the welfare organisation and any descendants of the once-wealthy Van Assche family could all have a claim to part of the fortune.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/14/belgian-student-strikes-gold-worth-9m-while-digging-sewers

He did not find it on his own. It was never staying secret. He was never getting it off of that terrain unnoticed. There really is nothing he could have done here, as keeping a find like this without reporting it is illegal. All the people saying they would have tried to keep it quiet would have simply gotten more debts, rather than more money. The kid just wasn't as lucky as the title makes it seem.

10

u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS 6d ago

He could’ve stuffed a few under his clothes and then ran to his car and put them in there and then ran back and pretended he just discovered it

6

u/RdtUnahim 5d ago

As the article says, at first "they" thought it was something else. So there likely wasn't ever a moment where he was alone with this find.

My guess is that he only reported because there’s no way to cash them without being discovered and hoped they’d be considered his in a “finders keepers” situation. Sadly, the world’s rules are designed for the rich to win and the poor to lose. He should’ve kept his fucking mouth shut.

547

u/RdtUnahim 6d ago edited 6d ago

It's not so bad in Belgium. The original owner has five years to come forward and prove it's theirs (documentation needed, and I'm going to bet there's no documentation for a stack of buried gold...). If they do not, then the finder gets 50%, and the owner of the land gets 50%. If it's your own land, you get 100%. The state keeps nothing.

However, in this case, the title is a little misleading. The student was the first to see the gold, while working on a building site. But there were dozens of others around. And he's working for a company, not for himself, which adds considerable wrinkles.

There was no way it was being kept secret, and it never was going to be all his.

Here I was thinking the best way to smuggle the gold would be to spend a few months learning how to forge and start turning the gold into jewelry to make it easier to sell without attracting attention.

Take it home, bury it in your own garden, then have some friends (witnesses) over to help you plant a rose bush. Dig right where you buried the gold. Act super surprised when you dig up your gold. Now it's been "found" on your property, and is now yours.

EDIT: Don't own your own home? No problem. That just means it's time for scuba diving in international waters with friends, and pretending to freak out when you find gold.

u/FairYouSee 6d ago

Well sure.

The people for whom it doesn't make sense aren't posting about it.

Well, you don't read about the people who find gold bars and don't turn it over.

Selective bias.

Ngl I would learn to cast some simple gold rings and liquidate them over time. Nobody would ever hear i found the 50 bars

6

u/Shebalied 6d ago

This would be the best. setup your own shit and melt down small amounts. make your own gold coins.

49 is suspicious yes. I'd better take another one or two... 47 looks more random. Actually 30 something would be more convincing. 36 is a nicely random-sounding amount. Although, if it's 30 something, it may as well be 20 something...

54

u/BurdTurglary 6d ago

Telling the authorities nothing because you found "zero" gold bars is the least suspicious thing ever. It's also the smartest thing ever.

16

u/uskgl455 6d ago

That's so true. No gold, no explanations needed. Genius

Belgian student found 50 gold bars. Authorities collected all 49 of them and all 47 were loaded on to a truck. All 40 were unloaded from the truck later that day, and all 38 were safely put into storage.

19

u/Xenon009 6d ago

And as the guy who checks in on them, I can confirm all 32 are safe

9

u/YellowGetRekt 6d ago

As the guy here to check the purity of them, I can confirm all 25 of them are pure gold

5

u/N3BB3Z4R 6d ago

So, nobody claims that 5 gold bars?

u/beckett_the_ok 6d ago

Just as soon as we can find it...

15

u/Medical-Condition-84 6d ago

Well, the Police officers WILL know what to do with all that gold. Thank you citizen, dismissed.

14

u/VisionSeeker 6d ago

Should've just bagged it up and bought a furnace to melt it down, fuck giving that back. That's your ticket out of this rat race.

15

u/happiness_1607 6d ago

I would have kept them all, melted them down, and sold it off slowly.

42

u/Lopendebank3 6d ago

Let him keep one.

12

u/Golemfrost 6d ago

Genius move, everyone is thinking he took one bar for himself, when he actually kept 51. :p

If he was smart, he would have only found 10. If he had any sense he wouldn't have found any at all.

Can’t believe they found 47 bars of gold

Lol why would anyone say anything. 49 is a number, just like 50 is. Nothing to see here. Good for him I hope he found 100 and took 51%

u/sharksareok 6d ago

48 you say? Why wouldn't I return those 47 gold bars? After all how would I explain to come intonthe possession of 46 gold bars? So I did the right thing, I went to the police station and told them I had found those 45 gold bars

7

u/Combei 6d ago

Officer: "44 gold bars you say? TONY, DO WE HAVE ROOM LEFT IN THE EVIDENCE CHAMBER FOR 43 GOLD BARS?"

Tony: "YES, 42 WILL FIT RIGHT IN."

Officer: "excellent and with only 40 gold bars we even have space left."

Please dont let my kids be this stupid.

9

u/VaporTrail_000 6d ago

Why is 49 particularly suspicious? 7x7x1 array instead of a 5x10x1 or 5x5x2 array.

47 (or any prime number, really) would be suspicious.

That’s so foolish.
Melt them down and sell them slowly over years.

7

u/FunPuz 6d ago

Thats what the Brink's-Mat Robbers did. its a fun one

14

u/Ok_Dot525 6d ago

This 49 is after the kid and authorities took their cut. So it makes sense.

5

u/FunPuz 6d ago

For anyone wondering: they have to wait five years for the legal heirs to come forward. The site was a brewery and potentially, if it can be proven with the time alloted, the gold goes to the descendants of the brewery owners. After that time the value is split 50/50 with the finder and the current land owners.

Edit to add: there might be a legal dispute as to who the finder was as well. The student found it but was acting under an employer so might have his rights to the stash waived.

5

u/why_1337 6d ago

5

u/PartialIntegration 6d ago

5

u/adomolis 6d ago

46 goldbars? What do you even need 41 goldbars for anyway. Ok fine here you go all of the 33 goldbars. Make sure you keep those 28 goldbars safe.
