El Niño makes tropical cyclone activity in the Pacific very high while making the Atlantic very quiet. I'm a few days out from experiencing my third tropical cyclone this season.

I think you are possibly the only person in the comments who actually knows what they are talking about. Thank you for that. I've experienced those super active years too, there have been others but 2004 and 2005 were the worst for me personally. Back to back storms are always extraordinarily fatiguing, and devastating when you have bad damage, but you will get through it.

u/sunfacethedestroyer 10d ago

Yeah, I live in Florida, and nobody is shocked about it being quiet. Everyone knows it's El Nino, even the dumb hicks who gobble up fox news and don't believe in climate change probably know a fair amount about El Nino.

u/FlashyFigs 10d ago

But are they demanding it be renamed to El America yet?

109

u/why0me 9d ago

No, because they want it to be scary on the news so its gotta stay foreign

Thems the rules

1

u/woolen_goose 9d ago

I heard they actually want to change it to a slur bc they enjoy hating groups of people so much.

1

u/VikingsFan7 9d ago

Someone else will probably have to break down the irony for you, 'cause you're probably not gonna get it on your own.

Seems the group that's doing the hating sint the one you wish it was.

1

u/woolen_goose 7d ago

Sigh. Okay, Maga guy 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/VikingsFan7 7d ago

They wander around with their mouths open trying to find Trump's flagpole to munch on. It's like reverse pin the tail on the donkey

Whoa, whoa, what's this 'el' stuff?

Through my decision ALONE, I have decided to change the name of the WEATHER ITSELF, from this day forward TROPICAL STORMS are to be called AMERICAN names. No more of this 'el' and 'la'. That's called INDOCTRONATION! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION ON THIS MATTER. Your favorite president: me! DJT 47 - ?

I'm working on a list new weather alerts.

I love Vance being part of his hit list.

1

u/LingonberryGlum2356 8d ago

Trump tried to kill his last VP so I'm going by the "once someone shows you who they are, believe them" motto.

The only way Vance advances is standing on the grave of his current boss.

No in good republican fashion they demand it be renamed The Little Boy

3

u/teddy5 9d ago

And La Nina will become Fat Man.

5

u/FailureToComply0 9d ago

Trump is torn on the idea. On the one hand, hes racist as fuck. On the other, he LOVES children.

The Niño

2

u/pokersal 9d ago

If we're going to change the name, we should name it after the president:
THE CHILD

1

u/Bustabusnow 9d ago

They will change it to The Boy so it’s in American language

1

u/rolypoly817 9d ago

Maybe "The Boy" ?

1

u/clawhammer05 9d ago

El nino means boy. They really like little boys.

1

u/RockLeePower 9d ago

That's stupid.

They're afraid of Spanish. It'll be to The American

1

u/AenarionTywolf 8d ago

American Ninja

El Niño is Spanish for… The Niño!

8

u/N3Chaos 10d ago

All other storms bow to the power of.... El Niño

2

u/Historical-Bridge787 10d ago

Or as they call it in Spanish: El cancer.

5

u/Fine-Flounder6827 10d ago

Nosotros lo llamamos El Niño, o como se traduce en inglés The Little Sh*t

1

u/zapppowless 9d ago

“El Niño stand for!!….”

“El Camino!”
🤣

7

u/moosenugget7 10d ago

Common for people living in hurricane prone areas, less so for people who are rarely affected by them. I didn’t really know this fact off the top of my head, and I actively try to learn about various science topics.

But I definitely believe it, and it makes some intuitive sense once you think about it out it (more energy in one ocean means less energy in another part).

1

u/Such_Letterhead1287 10d ago

Not for those whose not live in Pacific or Atlantic.

1

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 9d ago

That's because you practice in r/USDefaultism

u/Best-Coconut5641 10d ago

El Niño usually brings snow to the southeast and rain to the southwest. Every few years it would come through and we would get 2-3 inches of snow in Alabama around December.

1

u/Joopbox 10d ago

Every time it happens we get 2 to 3 feet in WV. Looks like there's probably an interesting winter on the way.

1

u/KrabbyBoiz 10d ago

Woohoo! Timberline here I come!

1

u/Background_Help325 9d ago

What’s cool is I lived in Az growing up so El Niño actually mattered a bit.

Seen some crazy storms from it there. Even had a microburst in our front yard one time. That was wild.

Now I live in the south and El Niño matters again. Yay probably more snow this year!!

1

u/StrawBerylShortcake 5d ago

I cant wait to be buried under 29292 feet of snow

6

u/New_traveler_ 10d ago

Will confirm that they do in fact know what it is and how it fucks them over.here’s a direct quote from them and literally every person along the gulf - ‘ it’s about time we catch a fuckin break ‘

1

u/zaptr1 10d ago

Not bad but more like “ by god, bout time them fuckin canes go elsewheres

2

u/devoduder 10d ago

I grew up in Florida and now live in Cali, the 97/98 El Niño on the California Central Coast was just as destructive as some Florida hurricanes I’d been through. Currently doing a lot for prep work for fall and winter. I hope not but I fear this will be worse.

2

u/DamnBored1 10d ago

Sure but this isn't the 1st time there's been an El Nino right? There have been Cyclones every year for past 112 years as per the image

2

u/wamceachern 9d ago

But we have El Nino every couple of years and still have hurricanes in the Atlantic. At least in the last 112 years we have had El Nino.

Yep the west coast of Mexico and Hawaii are candidates for canes

1

u/Technical_Writer_177 10d ago

They'll even accept el nino as an explanation/excuse why there "is no climate change, it's all just the weather"

1

u/MiserableChain2644 10d ago

I always find it strange to hear about people who, "don't believe," in global warming. Scientists aren't talking about the tooth fairy, Santa Claus or asking layman for their scientific opinion.

1

u/winkingchef 10d ago

“El Nino sounds like a Mexican anchor baby!”

1

u/Feisty-Lawfulness894 9d ago

the dumb hicks...probably know a fair amount about El Nino.

"Ayel Neener"

1

u/rochambreau 9d ago

I hear El Niño and I still can only think of Fernando Torres

1

u/Immediate_Zombie_627 7d ago

Idk, I have some hickish relatives that live in Florida that are convinced it’s because trump is president so the democrats can’t use their “weather machine” to make storms. They are being serious.

The problem with climate change isn't that people dont see differences with a given climate, its more with how its collected, presented, and the insane measures some want to take. The claims themselves are not scientifically proven. The first problem, Earth's climate has many cycles proven by various findings, so there's no proof we aren't just going through a cycle that we have no record to compare to, or really any way of knowing one started. Next, the sun has been acting outside all the expected norms and already they believe our solor maximum clock has been historically wrong. Next, Earth's axis is shifting, faster in the past decade, so climate is going to shift in relation to the external forces that don't shift with us. Next, you have governments like the US, UK, EU where we only contribute about 20%, or less, of the whole problem. To move this number down, it costs trillions of dollars that nobody has to spend, pretty much up front, to get started and there's no guarantee that we'd be able to measure any result or affect any change. This is also in part because scientists can't even agree on the causes, the solutions, or if we even have the technology or understanding to solve it. If it's due to a cycle, we cannot change it. To top it all off, the countries that are the worst offenders mostly aren't interested, so shaving off a couple percent for many of trillions of dollars that nobody has to spend, isn't likely going to make any difference other than decades of higher taxes to pay for it. I should just say permanent taxes, because they never go down.

1

u/Weekest_links 10d ago

But isn’t it being “quiet” different than it being silent?

20

u/LCDRformat 10d ago

Everyone who has talked to another person in the last three months has heard the name 'El Nino' about forty six times so I don't know if they're the only one who knows what they're talking about lmao

3

u/CivilCaregiver6519 10d ago

Maybe there have been more informed posts since but, at the time I wrote that, and excluding the obvious jokes, all I saw were people taking it as proof that climate change does or does not exist, or predicting DOOM, or inexplicably bringing politics into it when the explanation is really very simple and well understood without even bringing up any genesis particulars like mjo, ohc, wind shear, etc.

As a verified grumpy old goat in hurricane alley, it irritated me.

u/LCDRformat 9d ago

Keep it Spicy 🔥🥵

3

u/Girl_Mom_98 10d ago

2024 we got 4ft of water in our house during Helene and then a week later Milton hit. We just brought our newborn from the NICU too 😅

We needed some peace and quiet 🙌

2

u/rydan 10d ago

We were told that 2006 would be a history making hurricane season. 30+ hurricanes most likely. It would make 2006 look average. 5 hurricanes. Least active season in 9 years.

1

u/oforfucksake 10d ago

I lived in KW, Fl, for 05- on the hook. Unbelievable devastation. I moved to land after the first- to a house 1 Key West block from the bight- flooding for both Katrina, & Rita- then a serious wind event with Whilma. Unreal. Still lived there for 20+ years . Seen a bunch.

1

u/Then_Entertainment97 10d ago

Uhm, clearly not, because if they're the only one who knows what they're talking about then that means you don't know what you're talking about. And you clearly don't. Wait, but if you don't know what you're talking about maybe you do know what you're talking about... wait...

1

u/lollipopp_guild 9d ago

Yup because the Pacific is catching hell with hurricanes right now. Basically every other week. Been insane and never like this before. One bad one ever few years or more during hurricane season but nothing like this

It’s quiet in the Atlantic because we’re getting all of it
