Casual Thought If Godzilla would attack a city that is not (near) yours, your life would not change one bit. Just memes and news updates.

Someone wasn't alive for 9/11. Or maybe even hurricane Katrina.

u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
I was a teen at 9/11, but I get your point.
But as mentioned above: what would happen to you? You would Need to Go to work and go grocery shopping.
Nothing would change really for you, especially if you life in another Country.
What would happen to you if you live in Denver and Godzilla attacks Japan?

u/Djafar79 14h ago
Living in constant fear of it happening in Denver as well?

u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
Yes that of course! Emotionally for sure! But daily life?

You don't think the entire world would be panicked, worried that their city could be next?
-2
u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
Yes! Yes! EMOTIONALLY we all would change!
For sure!
But I mean daily business?

u/texrev87 14h ago
Militarized defenses would scale up exponentially and invade many if not all aspects of life

u/DroppedSoapSurvivor 14h ago
Probably, but not like you'd expect. You'd have political parties blaming the other for the attack, based on circumstantial, or zero evidence. For example, someone could spread a rumor that cell and wifi signals are what provoked Godzilla to attack. Imagine the chaos that would ensue if the government tried to police our usage of the internet.

u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
That is so true! I have not considered the political games and conspiracies.

With Godzilla specifically at least one or two major ports will likely be affected which will make notable differences around the world. For reference for this, the 2011 tsunami in Japan affected my life in California. Prices go up. Shippings get delayed. Releif efforts can be impactful depending on the scale. Godzilla would be a likely need massive damage control.
It's not notable on the scale of "oh my city got destroyed by a giant radioactive lizard" but the impact will be felt. Hell, a single boat getting stuck in a single canal affected global trade for months. Godzilla would do more than that.
4
u/Linkdes 14h ago
There would be a cascade of minor effects. A lot would be economical/monetary like prices increasing due to resources being diverted towards rebuilding the area godzilla attacked.
1
u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
You think there would be an international help relief thing?
You think Godzilla could unite people? That would be really cool.
2
u/Linkdes 14h ago
I mean one could hope humans could untie and work together to overcome a threat that could affect everyone.
I was thinking more pessimistically though. Japan, or wherever was attacked, would prioritize rebuilding. Other countries not immediately neighboring the event site wouldn't necessarily need to help, but the demand for those countries' resources would go through the roof. As Japan buys the resources they need to rebuild, those resources would then be diverted away from services or things you'd need and so the price you'd pay for your day-to-day stuff would also increase.
There'd be a bunch more effects that you'd have to deal with too just because something happened, or is happening, across the world.
3
u/JiroKatsutoshi 14h ago
I'm pretty sure there would be some version of international call to deal with it. But also, the last few years have taught me, 1/3 of the population(mainly US, but international idiots exist too)would be cheering for the Kaiju...
Not sure if China or the US would pass the chance to blow shit up around Japan if given the excuse.

Just because you still go to work or the grocery store, doesn't mean your life doesn't change.
Your life not changing substantially is NOT the same thing as your life not changing one bit. You seem to be conflating the two.
For example, after 9/11, airport security increased, both in the US and outside it. Other people were affected by the pure tragedy of it. Other people were affected by the wars and conflicts that followed in its wake. Major events have a ripple effect that go well beyond the bounds of the town or city impacted.
When atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, do you really think the only people in the world affected by them were the people living in those cities?
1
u/o_MrBombastic_o 14h ago
If half your cities population were wiped out by the Black Plague or your city was constantly being bombed daily like in the Ukraine you would still need to go to work and go grocery shopping, life doesn't stop just because the world is falling apart all around you

u/eskimospy212 14h ago
I'm pretty sure governments worldwide would react to a gigantic, radioactive dinosaur destroying a city, even if it was not theirs.
I mean 9/11 changed things all over the world and those planes were not radioactive and did not have lightning breath.

Yeah but what? What would they do?
You would still have to go to work that day and pay your light bill after Godzilla walked back into the ocean. Or flew off to space with a moth.
What would REALLY change for your daily life?
Edit: Seriously You Think your life in the US would change on a daily basis when Godzilla attacked Japan and went back in the ocean?

u/eskimospy212 14h ago
I live in New York and if movies have taught me anything it's that monsters really love eating New York so there would probably be changes here.
As to the rest it would probably depends on how successful Godzilla is in the attack and how he is eventually defeated. If it's by the military then probably significantly increased military spending and fewer other services. If it's by some sort of Jet Jaguar situation (cool!) then I guess we're looking at more of a Pacific Rim thing.

u/Zettomer 14h ago
THERE! You hit the big fucking question.
Godzilla, defeated? Which version of Godzilla are we talking about? Cause there's plenty where that doesn't happen.
Godzilla destroys Tokyo and just... Keeps going. Next city. And then the next. Godzilla is out there, he's rolling deep and no one can stop him.
This is more interesting than OP's base idea, which admittedly is wrong, the research boom from a single Godzilla attack would change the world within a couple decades. But what if it's not a single event? What if Godzilla keeps Godzilling?
Now answering THAT question and how it'd effect the world, THAT gets fucking interesting. Your thoughts, good sir?

u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
Yeah New York is a go to for monsters, thats true. but I mean Imagine you live in New York and the attack is in South Africa.
Would you get days of at work or would your Kids Not Go to school anymore?
3
u/iguacu 14h ago
Well now you're drastically moving the goalposts from "change one bit" to "change on a daily basis".
2
u/PinocchiosWoodBalls 14h ago
I did. It was literally a thought a had high in the shower and typed it right after.
Please follow the before mentioned goalpost.

u/Lieutenant_Scarecrow 14h ago
Yes. You obviously didn't live through 9/11. The easiest answer is that you'd live in fear of the next Kaiju attack. The neighboring cities or even country that was attacked would likely go into a state of emergency. All of the worlds military would be on high alert if this thing could come from any coast line. Sure, you may still have to go to work and live a somewhat normal life, but the fear and anxiety of the next attack, which could come from anywhere at any time, is what changes.

If Godzilla attacked Japan and then fucked off? Do you recall what happened to Japanese Video Games and Anime, after Fukishima? Imagine that scaled to the level of a Godzilla attack. Remember, he contaminates everything he comes near with nuclear radiation and breathes radiation beams so intense the atmosphere combusts.
Remember, Godzilla's atomic fire isn't him breathing fire, he's not a dragon. He blasts a beam of radiation so intense it causes ignition, big difference. So radioactive contamination is also a thing.
A real Godzilla attack means, at minimum internet nerds will immediately see:
No more Japanese made games for years, the JP economy is fucked now, everything is radioactive as the water table gets fucked. No one can have a job like "making entertainment products" when the tap water gives you super cancer.
No more anime, see above reasons. This happened evem with covid-19, not just Fukishima. You think FUCKING GODZILLA isn't going to be 1000x more intense than that? Have you fucking watched a recent Godzilla film? Even the "new" Monsterverse shit, where Godzilla tunneled through the fucking Earth's crust, should have clued you in. If not, go look up Shin Godzilla, maybe on the internet archive for best results, maybe that will help you understand.
Many electronics either become insanely expensive or cease to exist, as any components or products manufactured in Japan are now impossible, due to radioactive land, facilities and far more relevantly, the ground water.
No more Dragon Ball. No more shonen. No more Mario. No more Sonic. No more pokemon. No more any of that shit.
Now consider how everyone will try to nuke Godzilla, reguardless of where he is, starting nuclear wars on top of it. Now consider that nuclear bombs, while searing the flesh and seeming to harm Godzilla, actually do the opposite, empowering him, massively boosting his regeneration and making him vastly more powerful, effectively permanently ala for centuries, nuclear half-life rules.
Maybe a single Pacific Rim Kaiju attack without the blue blood shit, maybe not THAT bad, but still globally crippling. But fucking Godzilla? The fucking KING OF MONSTERS?! TBH I see human civilization taking a centuries to fully recover, if not millennia. The consequences of the military boom after a single Godzilla appearance would wipe us.
After all, if Godzilla attacks once and fucks off, nations will call it a WMD, start blowimg eachother up and go to war. At that point, Godzilla reappearing and doing even more damage is actually the best case scenario for humanity, otherwise we'll blame each other into extinction.
Interesting alternative? Godzilla unites all the world's military powers into a single organization. Eventually, they do defeat them. With the world's military being a single, non-national organization, world peace is achieved under a world military dictatorship.

If Godzilla was real and leveled a city our lives would change a lot, very dramatically, and likely for the worse. No matter where we were.

Brother, you don't realize just how many minor things are manufactured in major cities. There are items used in manufacturing here in my neck of the woods only made in various major cities. If the factories making those items suddenly stopped producing, it would bring the manufacturing of other things to a standstill, which brings things to a standstill further down the line, and on and on. A domino cascade of production failure.
Add into that the ports and shipping hubs in these major urban areas and you've got a real fucking mess real fast.

It would change though. Oil prices sky rocket because a giant lizard ate all the Saudi Sheish and more at 11!

u/fraggy-waggy 14h ago edited 14h ago
I think a giant radioactive lizard in the ocean would have serious consequences on everyone. For starters, a major city getting destroyed means higher government activity across the globe to combat the rampaging kaiju. In addition to that, supply lines would be devastated. Wherever the lizard is, ships aren’t going to be able to travel safely, so most of what you buy at the grocery store is going to be more expensive.
Practically, we’re talking about much tighter restrictions on boat travel and routes you can take. Sporadic increases to prices of groceries. There’s going to be a lot of government time and money spent on combating the reptile of destruction, so things like filling potholes might get ignored.
Personally, I’d be shitting myself. If you live in a costal city, you’re going to be terrified, and chances are, there would be a pretty big migration away from the coasts until the baha-blast-breath lizard is gone. Outside of coasts, housing prices go up as demand increases. In coastal cities, new evacuation plans if it looks like Godzilla is going to attack, false alarms and sudden flashes of terror.
It’s pretty foolish to think that any event involving the sudden non-preventable death and destruction of an entire city wouldn’t have far-reaching consequences, because now everyone had to scramble to prevent it for their own city.
Just imagine if they parked their lizard ass somewhere critical to supply lines. Strait of Hormuz closed due to lizard - enjoy 7 dollar gas.

I think this would only apply if Godzilla wasn’t a threat to your own city.

u/Ghumketu 14h ago
What if that city has a factory that makes something that everyone needs? Like TSMC fab in Taiwan, or Major movie studios in Hollywood, or Suez canal.

u/Genetic_outlier 13h ago
I'd be willing to bet that a Godzilla attack on a major city anywhere would be more impactful than a war in Iran any day. Especially since Godzilla is known to focus on Southeast Asia and any threat near the Strait of Malacca would decimate Chinese energy imports. This would immediately eliminate a massive part of global manufacturing. Your life would go on as normal only as long as you didn't need to buy anything.

I think people would be less annoying under this post if you worded it differently, and said something like “in the future” because something these smartasses aren’t getting is that 9/11 is memed on all the time now
