Random & Off-Topic Bi-Weekly r/Saskatchewan Random & Off Topic Thread

Hey Saskatchewanians!

Rule 1 in r/Saskatchewan says that "Posts should focus on events, issues, or culture that affect Saskatchewan as a whole." But sometimes you might have a question or discussion that doesn't follow that rule.

Maybe you want to want to ask about "monkey budging" (Which isn't Saskatchewan specific).

Maybe you want to tell everyone how much your concrete patio cost, or ask what the temperature at the lakes is (neither of which affect Saskatchewan as a whole).

Or maybe you want to advertise an event happening in Regina (better suited for r/Regina), Saskatoon (better suited for r/Saskatoon), or Moose Jaw (better suited for r/MooseJaw) but is open to everyone from everywhere (elsewhere in Saskatchewan, or Canada, or beyond).

Well here's your (bi-weekly) chance! Comments in this thread are exempt from Rule 1; meaning they can be completely random and/or completely off-topic! However, the rest of the subreddit (and Reddit) rules still apply! For example:

  • Be Respectful: All users are expected to engage respectfully. Insults, name-calling, harassment, bullying, bigotry, or personal attacks against other users will not be tolerated. Debate the topic, not the person. Posts or comments that demean, target, or antagonize others will be removed. Repeat or severe offenders may be banned to maintain a welcoming and constructive environment for the community.
  • Be Substantive: Contributions should add meaningful content to the discussion. Low-effort or spammy replies such as one-word responses, empty memes, excessive off-topic jokes, or personal attacks dilute conversation and may be removed. Thoughtful discussion, added context, or relevant experiences are encouraged.
  • User accounts must be at least 15 days old and have a positive karma score to comment.
  • And finally, in addition to r/Saskatchewan subreddit specific rules, our users are also expected to be familiar with and abide by Reddit's sitewide policies; including but not limited to the User Agreement, Reddit Rules, and the Reddiquette Guide.

This post will repeat on Mondays and Fridays at 08:00 AM CST.

Discussion Anybody go to a place called Camp Tamarack?

In 2010-2014 ish I went to this sleep away summer camp for kids with learning disabilities called Camp Tamarack and had… a very interesting time to say the least!
I remember a fair amount of the general shenanigans and goings on, but I’m trying to remember more specific details about the camp and like systems n stuff.
It was a 3 week long camp in the forest just a bit outside Prince Albert but I remember kids from all over the province went there, even some counsellors too.
I’m pretty sure it’s under new management and ownership now.

But yeah, I thought I’d take a bit of a shot in the dark and see if I could spark up any memories or even reconnect with anyone who may remember this weird place. Whether you were a camper, a counsellor, a parent whose kid went, or know someone who went.

Please reply with anything you may know! Thanks :)

The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) is requesting assistance from the public in locating 34-year-old Dante James Marinari.

According to a news release from the WPS, Marinari is the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant for two counts of sexual assault stemming from incidents in June and July of 2024.

The WPS added he is also the subject of an arrest warrant stemming from charges of assault causing bodily harm and failing to appear in court from the Maidstone RCMP.

Marinari is described as standing approximately 5’7” tall with a stocky build. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Marinari has also been known to use the last name Elig.

The WPS said Marinari has resided in Weyburn but is last known to be in Calgary.

Police attempts to locate Marinari have been unsuccessful. Anyone who sees this individual or has information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the WPS, their local police agency or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

SaskToday will have updates as they become available.

Question TSASK inspection

If you install a hot tub with a certified journey person electrician on a 100 amp, will this get you flagged for a TSASK inspection? Would the permit show my house is only on a 100 amp electrical panel? Or would there be other information available to TSASK to show I only have a 100 amp electrical panel?

I’ve been told TSASK does not inspect every hot tub install (around 10%) and if they do then it’s delayed by months, and I can use my smart reader to show I’m under actual usage. Does this track?

Thanks!

Question Saskatchewan Rural and Remote Recruitment Incentive

My main plan after graduation was to apply for the rural incentive, but I’m a little confused about the eligibility requirements. On the website, it says you have to be a “Net New Employee to the SHA or Affiliate or SCA or new classification,” and it also mentions that the incentive is for full-time positions.

I’ve been wanting to apply for a CCA position under SHA as a casual because it would give me more flexibility while I’m still in school. However, I’m wondering if working as a casual CCA under SHA would make me ineligible for the rural incentive after I graduate, even if I apply for a full-time position in a different classification.

I’ve been putting off applying because I can’t really find anywhere that clearly explains whether being a casual employee already counts as being an SHA employee for the “net new employee” requirement.
Does anyone know someone who has received this incentive as a new grad? What was the process like, and what should I expect? I’d really appreciate any advice!

I’m currently a 3rd-year student, so I’m trying to figure out what would make the most sense. Would it be better to work casual under SHA now, or look for a CCA position with a private/non-SHA-affiliated employer so I can potentially qualify as a “net new employee” after graduation?

Also, if anyone has experience with the rural incentive and can clarify the full-time requirement, I’d really appreciate it!

Question Has anyone heard of someone going to university with an Adult 12 modified diploma instead of regular Grade 12 classes?

So last June I graduated from an Adult 12 program for high school with an Adult 12 diploma, and I completed the Grade 12 courses (they were modified/31). Now my teachers are trying to make me redo grades 10, 11, and 12. I was thinking that since I already graduated and finished the Grade 12 courses, wouldn’t I just need to upgrade my classes to unmodified Level 30 courses plus the university requirements to go? I would like to go to university outside of Saskatchewan, like in Ontario or British Columbia, for wildlife biology. Does anyone know where I can go or who I need to talk to in order to understand this? Or does anyone know someone who was in the same situation as me?

Question Berks Inc, is it legit?

I’ve been looking for a new job ever since i was let go from my previous one and I’ve been applying on Indeed to multiple places. A company called Berks Inc. reached out to me a while ago and i just had my second interview with the manager. From what he told me, after training i should be making sales every day and I will get the opportunity to travel to the states for sales. I definitely have the willpower to do a door-to-door job, but is this legitimate and is it worth it? From what i know they sell SaskTel products among other things and get their leads directly from SaskTel.

What was also sketchy to me is I asked what would be expected from me in 3 months, and I was told I should be at the point where I’d be able to train others. I know that this implies there’s a very high turnover rate.

Please advise people of Saskatchewan!!

Much thanks.

Question Vacation Pay

Good Evening. I want to go to America (God Help Me) for 2 weeks in December. I will be 2 or 3 weeks short of being employed for a year at my employer. My boss has told me I cannot get paid vacation time until I work for a year. Is this true?

News I can never ever get of a conservation officer.

Hit a deer on the Oxbow area and need someone to come out and shoot it. Phoned Estevan police department and they give me a number for a CO and no one answers the phone. Same thing happened a couple of years back. I guess ill use the tip line.

The one 800 number just tells you to contact local field office.

Tried the TIP line and it says not available in your area.

This shouldn't be that hard.

Edit: I did finally get a hold of a conservation officer via RCMP and they came and shot it before 5pm.

What tips do you all have for night driving?

I drive to saskatoon and back every two weeks and now it's moose and deer season, and it's getting darker earlier and earlier. I drive a 2008 sedan with pretty dim high beams. Do any of you know if switching out the bulbs would help or if my only solution to stay safe while driving at night is just to be on high alert all the time?

I did just restore my headlights so they are very clear. I'm just wondering what you have found helps in your experience

edit: by switching bulbs I mean replacing my used ones with new halogens.

Question Non-AI Service Provider?

Is Sasktel a reasonable option to switch for a cell phone provider after being with Bell? I moved from the east coast, so Bell is pretty much a monopoly over there. I would like to not support AI as much as possible, so I'm curious if Sasktel is the best option for boycotting those AI telecom companies. I wanted to switch to Koodo but I found out Telus is doing the same as Bell.

Edit: I didn't know i needed to clarify this, but when I say "data center" I'm speaking of the AI data centers. The whole point of this post is asking for any non-AI service providers that aren't building massive data centers.
