CW: abuse, rape/sexual assault, stalking, death
My ex (M23) and me (F20) dated for around 3 years after meeting on Discord 6 years ago and we had a REALLY nasty breakup.
Last year I found out he died in an accident. I cried a lot when I found out because despite everything that happened between us, I felt really guilty about how mean I had become towards him towards the end. I was trying to get him to stop chasing me because I wanted to move on, while he was literally dating someone else and trying to get me back at that time.
While we were dating he would ditch me to go hang out with this girl and apparently" help"her through her breakup, while also lying to me about her. Later I found out that he had apparently been telling HER that I physically abused him and beat him and shit, basically trying to get her sympathy while trying to get with her.
After we broke up, his stalking also got to a point where I was genuinely stressed. He was literally dating someone else and still wouldn't leave me alone, so I eventually contacted his parents and basically told them "please make your son stop doing this because I really don't want to involve the law" 😭. This man then apparently went around his college telling people that I had filed some random lawsuit against him just to get revenge on him. Like??? I contacted his parents specifically because I DIDN'T want to involve the law 😭 how did that become "she filed a lawsuit for revenge"??
The reason I finally left him was also pretty fucked up. I had told him that I was abused as a kid, and at one point I saw my rapist again and completely panicked. His response was basically telling me to stop overreacting and get over it myself. He even doubled down and said he would have felt worse if it had happened to his sister or cousin instead of me. That was basically the point where I was done.
Then a few months after his death I started finding out that he had apparently lied about basically EVERYTHING about himself for YEARS. His age, his origins, his religion. He told me he was Assamese/Bhutanese mixed and originally was Odia, Also made up a story about how he integrated from Bhutan to here n how his mum left him behind . The pictures of his "parents" he showed me were actually his best friend's parents. He used to tell me his parents don't send him money and i used to buy even his body wash and shampoo for him ☠️ they used to send him more than anything my family could afford yet he acted like he was broken. And apparently he had even told people in his college I was Punjabi. I'm literally Bihari 😭 where did Punjabi even come from??
Then there's the whole thing about him telling people I abused him. I am 4'11 I don't even have the balls to stand up to my teachers or bully throughout school or college anyone who knows me irl knows I hate violence and don't even raise voice at people. Apparently he was telling people I would beat him and burn him with cigarettes and shit, i started smoking after the break-up so I don't know where it came from ,all that was basically to get sympathy from this girl and make himself look like the victim.
And the fucked up thing is that after he died I spent months feeling guilty. I kept thinking about how I treated him, how mean I was, how I could have handled the breakup differently and wondering if I should have been kinder because he was dead and I couldn't take anything back.
But then I started finding out all this shit and now I genuinely don't know how I'm supposed to feel about him. There was a point in my life where i loved him sm that i wanted to marry him
And there's one last thing that makes the whole situation even more fucked up. He had lied about SO much that even our online friends had a hard time believing that he had actually died. There was genuinely a point where even I didn't fully believe it. Because when someone has lied about their age, family, background, relationships and basically their entire identity, finding out they're dead almost feels like another lie.
Eventually I had to come to terms with it. I was in denial for a while, but eventually I accepted that he really was dead.
And that's what fucks with my head the most. I still cried when he died. I still feel sad that he's dead. But I'm also finding out that the person I spent years with apparently lied about huge parts of his life and was telling people horrible things about me behind my back.
So I don't even know if I'm grieving him, grieving the person I thought he was, feeling guilty about how things ended, or all three.
I don't hate him, but I also can't pretend he was some innocent person just because he's dead.
I genuinely don't know how you're supposed to grieve someone when, after they're gone, you keep finding out that so much of what you knew about them wasn't even real.
TL;DR: My ex died after a toxic breakup involving stalking, manipulation and lies about me.
I initially felt guilty and grieved him, but after his death I found out he had apparently lied about huge parts of his life.
Now I don't know if I'm grieving him, the person I thought he was, my guilt, or all three.
