Russia Has plague returned to Siberia? Panic after lab worker's death

>A female staff member at an anti-plague institute in the Irkutsk region who died amid rumours of a "black death" outbreak was diagnosed with "pneumonia of unknown origin". Rospotrebnadzor insists that the situation in the region is "stable".

Residents of Russia's Irkutsk region are deeply worried by rumours of a possible outbreak of pneumonic plague in this Siberian area. Speculation began to spread rapidly after the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute.

>

>Darya Shipilova died in the early hours of 2 October in the intensive care unit of the district hospital in the town of Shelekhov. According to local media, she broke a test tube containing the plague pathogen.

>

>The incident prompted authorities to introduce quarantine measures: around 200 people have been placed under strict medical observation. The outlet "Baikal People" (source in Russian) reports that several Irkutsk hospitals were immediately closed and placed under quarantine, due to last three weeks. On Saturday, masks were made compulsory as a preventive measure at the Irkutsk aluminium plant in Shelekhov.

>

>Residents of Shelekhov have seen people on the streets wearing protective suits, masks and gloves. Local parents also say masks were handed out in kindergartens.

>

>The deceased, a 28-year-old laboratory assistant, specialised in research on dangerous pathogens. According to the main account reported by her colleagues and independent media, on 25 September, while working with live biological material in the laboratory, she accidentally smashed a test tube containing the dangerous bacterium Yersinia pestis.

>

>Two days later Shipilova's condition suddenly worsened. She was rushed to Shelekhov district hospital. At first doctors, unaware of what had happened, suspected a severe case of coronavirus and admitted her to a specialised Covid unit. However, the rapid deterioration and the clinical picture forced them to carry out rapid tests for highly dangerous infections. The patient was put on a ventilator, but her life could not be saved.

>

>The pulmonary form of plague develops extremely fast and, without prompt and targeted antibiotic treatment, is almost invariably fatal.

>

>**Are the authorities hiding information?**

>

The authorities' immediate response underlined how serious the situation was. The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, urgently arrived at Shelekhov hospital and took part in an emergency meeting of the sanitary and anti-epidemic commission chaired by regional governor Igor Kobzev.

>

After the incident, officials initially restricted the information they released. During the first 24 hours, authorities in the Irkutsk region and Governor Igor Kobzev avoided using the word "plague". On 2 October Kobzev spoke of "a particularly dangerous infection" and said that "the situation is under strict control". The next day the authorities in Baikalsk urged residents not to travel to Shelekhov because of plague, but deleted the post a few hours later.

>

>The head of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, also commented on the situation. Citing Rospotrebnadzor and the republican government, he said the woman's death was linked to plague infection, but later his statement was amended to a more cautious wording.

>

>This lack of clarity has fuelled panic on social networks in Irkutsk and neighbouring regions.

>

>Well-known Russian epidemiologist Gennady Onishchenko tried to reassure local residents, saying that plague carriers - rodents and fleas - in Siberia usually go into winter dormancy by early October. But that did not dispel people's fears.

>

>"Pneumonia of unknown aetiology"

On Sunday, Rospotrebnadzor said that the sanitary and epidemiological situation in Irkutsk region was stable, and that the woman had died from "pneumonia of unknown aetiology". The agency insists that further testing of samples taken from the patient did not reveal any micro-organisms related to her professional work.

>

>"The sanitary and epidemiological situation in Irkutsk region, in the cities of Irkutsk and Shelekhov, is stable," the press service of Rospotrebnadzor said. "A special package of measures has been organised and carried out in connection with the illness of an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East, diagnosis: 'Pneumonia of unknown aetiology'."

>

>Rospotrebnadzor also stated that no incidents involving pathogenic microorganismshad been recorded at the institute and that "no staff member has sought medical help for infectious diseases in the past 10 days".

North America DOJ Seeks Military Lawyers for New York Law Enforcement Surge

Thumbnail

"The Justice Department is enlisting military attorneys as temporary prosecutors supporting law enforcement surges in Manhattan, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, according to a Defense Department email reviewed by Bloomberg Law.

A Marine Corps major on Thursday messaged military lawyers advertising opportunities for active and reserve officers of any rank to serve as special assistant US attorneys for the Southern District of New York, the Central District of California, and the Eastern District of California.

The positions for 179-day terms starting Oct. 13 or later will “support areas with an increase in prosecutions associated with a surge in federal law enforcement efforts,” the email stated. “Responsibilities are expected to be immigration related.”

Surges in those three districts, which federal officials haven’t publicly disclosed, come after the administration had retreated earlier this year from blanketing cities like Minneapolis and Chicago with federal immigration agents in widespread sweeps that sparked protests and violence.

The Pentagon email didn’t specify the scope of upcoming crime crackdowns, and a DOJ statement didn’t address questions about the surge. Los Angeles saw an earlier surge in immigration enforcement in summer 2025.

“The Department has a variety of Special Assistant US Attorneys who come from many federal agencies to contribute to DOJ’s public safety mission,” DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels said in a statement.

“We will continue to hire lawyers from every corner of the country who want to put those who prey on Americans in jail,” she added.

The Trump administration has previously called on military lawyers to reinforce US attorneys’ offices handling spikes in immigration cases, including in Minneapolis in January. But plans to deploy judge advocate generals in the high-profile Southern District of New York are surprising, former Manhattan prosecutors said.

The district is known for rigorous hiring standards and recruitment of Ivy League law school graduates, sometimes attracting criticism for elitism. SDNY has accepted special assistant US attorneys from other federal agencies over the years, but on a much more isolated basis and not from the military to advance a major priority of the White House, previous Manhattan office leaders said.

One area where the Manhattan office needs more assistant US attorneys, they said, is defending the government against a flood of civil habeas claims challenging the administration’s policy of detaining immigrants indefinitely without bond. But the DOD message didn’t mention this as one of focal points for the post. Instead, the email described a caseload dedicated to assaults, threats, theft, destruction of property, and other crimes."

Russia The Russian story about plague does not make sense to me.

1.) If the scientist was knowingly exposed to pneumonic plague, and is an expert at the virus, why wouldn’t she immediately take antibiotics and self isolate. If you take antibiotics within 24 hours of exposure, there is a 100% survival rate. Yet, she died.

2.) So either she didn’t take antibiotics (which I highly doubt), or…the antibiotics didn’t work?

3.) If she was accidentally exposed, as some suggest, why is the FSB involved and conducting a criminal investigation?

4.) If she was accidentally exposed to bubonic plague from a marmot, that would be spread by biting flees. Why would that require a massive lockdown? Wouldn’t you only expect to see a massive lockdown from a droplet spread of pneumonic plague?

Disclaimer, I am not an expert on this. I just have questions that do not seem to add up.

Can anyone with a medical background help me make sense of this?

Russia A Relevant Synopsis of Annie Jacobsen's "Biological War: A Scenario"

With the recent posts about the pneumonic plague lab leak in Siberia, I've found a lot of discourse between people saying "it's no big deal" and people who have read this book saying "this is the beginning of the end." I read the book, and people shouldn't have to commit to reading the whole thing to understand the pertinent points and what's relevant, so I simply thought a brief summary of the book would be helpful to this community (which I read regularly, but have never posted to before).

I hope this is helpful. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor anyone in any medical or medical-adjacent profession, and I also don't have any insider information. I'm just someone who read the book, and want to share what's in the book.

Also, I'm sure some people could find ways to dispute the author's claims - but, for what it's worth, half of the page count is citations and sources. She did incredibly thorough research and fact checking, and I'm strongly inclined to believe the things she says are true.

What AJ says about Pneumonic Plague

  • Pneumonic Plague, when untreated, has a fatality rate in humans of 100%.
  • It spreads person-to-person via airborne droplets.
  • In order to be treated, antibiotics must be administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. In early stages, these symptoms look like pneumonia or any other common upper respiratory virus.
  • The US medical system is not equipped to handle it. In the US there are approximately 100 "special pathogen" beds for people infected with rare, horrific diseases (plague, hemorrhagic fevers, etc).

What AJ says about Bio-Safety Labs and Engineered Viruses

  • Since the early 2000s, there has been an explosion in Biosafety Level 3 and 4 labs both in the US and abroad
  • There is no international regulatory body over these labs, and many individual countries (including the US) do not have centralized, domestic oversight
  • Many countries research and develop bioweapons by combining traits from multiple bacteria and organisms to increase lethality, transmissibility, etc.
  • The barrier to entry to acquire both the knowledge and reagents to develop bioweapons has dropped precipitously in the past few decades

AJ's Fictional Scenario

The book walks through a scenario where everything that can go wrong does. This is where we separate out what happens in the book - a true worst-case scenario - with what may or may not be happening in real life.

  • The bioweapon leaks from a BSL-4 lab, not a BSL-3 lab, because it is specifically an engineered bioweapon and not naturally occurring plague
  • The bioweapon's engineers have modified pneumonic plague to add the following two functions:
    • In the first 24 hours, the infected person is flooded with endorphins and becomes extremely sociable, intentionally increasing transmissibility
    • The bioweapon is a "chimera," meaning that when treated with antibiotics, another, equally fatal pathogen emerges in the infected person
      • AJ notes that "chimera" weapons have been successfully developed by multiple countries and institutions
  • The index patient is discovered by a group of friends on a hunting trip, meeting in Russia from the ten different nations in which they live, and return home with 24 hours of contact; thus, asymptomatic but transmitting the virus
  • The first outbreak in the US is in Skid Row and is initially thought to be due to many people taking tainted narcotics; additionally, illnesses in homeless encampments are not reported to local authorities across the US, meaning the outbreak can spread before anyone realizes

The frightening similarities:

While there's no way to know what, if any, parts of the fictional scenario are at play here - hopefully none, as it would be a stretch for all of them to be true - there are a couple of interesting similarities between the book and what we're seeing:

  • The virus leaks from a lab (albeit a BSL-4 lab, where in real life it was a BSL-3 lab)
  • Local governments in Russia hold press conferences saying "there's no cause for alarm," all the while national government agencies are visibly seen intervening
    • AJ notes that this same thing happened during the Chernobyl disaster, where the full brunt of the disaster was concealed by the Russian government

Anyway - let's hope none of this was true and it's all contained. But since this book is being talked about a lot currently - and rightly so - hopefully this gets everyone on the same page.

Russia Irkutsk pneumonic plague media coverage - one and done?

What are we looking at here? I am assuming PCR tests will take another day?

Here's Annie Jacobsen: https://x.com/i/status/2106172807273206035

Do we have on the ground sources? Can we believe FSB is involved?

If there is a blackout on media, what do we assume from that?

Get your respirators ready?

USA Southeast It's already begun: Weeks before the midterms, election deniers on Georgia's election board quietly asked Trump's DOJ to intervene. Their letter is full of excuses: attacks on the state's voting machines, demands for last-minute software changes and unsubstantiated claims of "altered records."
