We barely get one of these a year with dems with chuck Schumers dead head and squishy spine we need to learn how to put their feet in the fire cuz we got a lot of work to get done and we sure as he'll don't want them distracted from that but we also don't want the distracted from prosecuting these schmucks with in power now.its going to be an uphill battle too .we need new young people that are going to work more than 5 days a month for a couple hours. Roads and bridges ,health care ,tax the rich, and prosecute etc . Damm I just overwhelmed myself

To be fair, it's a copy of EU law...
Most (edit: pretty much everything) of what Mamdani is doing already exists in a lot of different countries; he's not showing the world, he's showing the US.
But that's a good thing, Americans need to see that it's possible for them!

It already exists at the New York state level and pre-existed at the Federal level before Trump repealed it.
This is just more garbage Mamdani worship. Just like MAGAs.

So if I VPN from NYC can I get corporations to treat me as if I'm in New York?
1
u/Downtown_Eye5736 12h ago
I mean the whole point is to make cancelling as simple as signing up for something. If you have to go through hoops like vpn then might as well do the extra clicks.
5
u/Realistic-Raisin2812 12h ago
But it's not "extra clicks."
It is often a very onerous process that may involve calls or even certified letters.
1
u/Downtown_Eye5736 12h ago
Yeah my gym needed me to go in or send a letter to cancel, but those kind of businesses that don't have an online sign up/cancellation process aren't likely to be covered by this.
3
u/Realistic-Raisin2812 11h ago
This is "click to cancel."
If you can sign up with a click, then you can click to cancel.

u/deadflow3r 11h ago
It would have been national if Trump would not have been elected. Under Biden the FTC had been working on this. Trump reversed it.

I'm not an American, so I'm sorry for my ignorance, but - can he even do that? Isn't he "just" mayor of a single (albeit big) city?
As if companies would implement an exception especially for NYC. And if they don't - what's he supposed to do against it?
1
u/Successful_Ebb_7402 8h ago edited 8h ago
So, short form is that in the US, local laws can be superseded by state and federal laws, but otherwise are applicable in their own region
So, for example, Mamdani can require any business in category X doing business in NYC must have an online cancelation button and so it will be for any business X in NYC. As long as the state doesn't pass a law which would restrict or prevent that, the law holds. On the other hand, if the state passed a law that required all cancelations be handled by written, hand signed, notarized forms, the online rule would be dead
Federal beats state beats city, but the flip also applies. If the higher level doesn't regulate, the lower levels can. So when the courts killed the national cancellation rules, a bunch of states moved to adopt them independently. Mamdani is just going even more local till NY state catches up
Edit: As for how companies will react, it'll depend on the penalties assigned and whether the cost of compliance can be easily absorbed. A large company might make more money just paying penalties, but will spend the money to comply just because its more valuable to be seen complying. A smaller company might pay the fines because they can't afford the development costs. Its all going to depend on individual priorities

Iâve been wondering how to republicans cause damage so quickly but democrats canât seem to be able to push the good things just as quickly. And it appears that the answer is- because they donât gaf. 1
u/subpoenaThis 9h ago
If NYC were a state or would be the 6th largest state. If based on economy it would be the 5th largest state. So more important in some business senses than 90% of threat of the country.
Not to say that the rest isn't important as it is the sum of all that makes the total, but it takes something like all of the 15 smallest states to equal NYC.
They don't make rules for other places as with business everywhere, the big markets dictate and the small markets get what the big markets demand unless there is more money on changing things up for the small markets.
1
u/Extra_Espresso 7h ago
I will say a lot of what has been passed under Mamdani was on the docket for a while, a good bit before Mamdani ever took office. That said he does sign off on these so he does deserve some credit.
-1
u/djc1000 11h ago
He says shit and his social media fan boys amplify it. The truth is he hasnât accomplished anything, or really done anything, since taking office. His signature policy is having the city subsidize supermarkets, which would force all the existing supermarkets (which have a 1% profit margin) to close.
2
u/AlarmingTurnover 11h ago
The weird thing is that if you look at all of his policies that he's enacted so far, all of them were done in previous administrations. He's not done a single new thing. No new initiatives. They've all been things that already existed to some degree or another that he's taken credit for.Â
1
u/omicron-7 8h ago
Literally the one this post is about is just a biden admin rule that got rolled back by the trump admin
1
u/Luci-Noir 11h ago
He literally has contacts with influencers and uses telegram for it. Their people have been refusing to show up to city council meetings to address it and it might be illegal since theyâre deleting the records on the apps theyâre using.
1
u/PodgeD 10h ago
The cost of basics like milk, cheese, chicken, eggs vary a lot between supermarkets near me. One is like 40% more expensive for the same chicken and always busy.
But you think a couple of supermarkets a few neighborhoods away are going to close all the existing stores? Shows how your opinion is based on blind ignorance rather than thought.
I'd say the free 3k/2k is also more of his signature policy...
0
u/djc1000 7h ago
If the city opens subsidized supermarkets that sell below cost, yes, the commercial supermarkets will close. How many get put out of business depends on how many subsidized supermarkets open.
1
u/PodgeD 6h ago
No they won't. Lidl and Trader Joe's already exist in NYC and yet stores charging 50%+ extra for some things are doing fine. If what you're saying is true the only stores that would be open are TJs and Lidl.
You're basing what you're saying off nothing other than your random thoughts. Like I don't see anything saying the new stores would sell below cost price.

u/metalfacefinger 11h ago
You know we all have Internet and we can all easily check that what youâre saying is total bullshit right?
Rent freeze on one and two year leases
Free child care for 2 year olds
Balanced the budget
Pied a terre tax
Fair fares expansion
100k potholes fixes2
u/emanon_guy 7h ago edited 7h ago
Yes we do to have the internet and you're a disgusting liar.
- Adams filled more than 500k potholes over 4 years in one of the mildest stretch of winters in NYC history. Looks like Mamdani isn't pulling his weight.
- Free childcare for 2 year olds isn't in place. It's a state-sponsored pilot program pushed by Hochul. She and Menin have made most of this happen. It's only 2000 seats.
- Pied a terre is also a Hochul tax.
- Fair fares have been around forever and the expansion was pushed by the city council. Not the mayor. Specifically Council Speaker Julie Menin. Who also has been responsible for most of the universal childcare work to date.
- The absolute lie around "balancing the budget". 1) New York City is required BY LAW to balance the budget. 2. He pushed out pension payments to clear out over 2 billion from the budget and got another multi-billion dollar bailout from Hochul
Tired of you creepy cult of personality celebrity worshipers lying like MAGAs. You guys aren't even from NYC and you spread lies about it because of your weird crush on a politician. MAGA coded.

None of itâs true, except he does appoint the members of the rent stabilization board, who vote on rent increases for rent controlled tenants. But all democratic mayors freeze those increases.
The âbalanced budgetâ and pied a terre tax a great examples. The state came up with more than 10 billion. Mamdami played an accounting trick with pensions to claim another 2 billion. So the budget wasnât balanced, itâs still 12 billion out of kilter, they just kicked the can down the road two years, and mamdami isnât the one who did it. The pied a terre tax, similarly, is a state level tax and one of the governors initiatives. Mamdami was supposed to implement it, but he did that so incompetently that it was ruled unconstitutional.
Heâs a fraud.

This is definitely something to do with Lina Khan being in his admin. She led click to cancel nationally when she was the FTC chair but that was promptly stalled and maybe (?) ended with this Trump term. The FTC could be so good for every consumer in this hell hole but instead it's opted for big business per usual.

Too many comments with so many labels. Let's reframe. If the goal of government is to provide security, bettermnt, and commitment to its people, e.g., Citizens, then what Mamdani is doing fits that. We've been so trained into "this vs that", republican vs democrat, MAGA vs libtard, right vs left, that anything that deviates from one vs other gets labeled, attacked, censured. What we've been led to believe is that culture wars are important. Are they? How about we start looking at humanity and betterment instead of argument and conflict? Too polyanna-ish? Sure. But what we've got now isn't working. Give me more MiniMamdani's at all levels of government. In my view, it's what our local, state, and federal institutions should be doing.
1
u/cmcdonald22 11h ago
It would have been inf 2024 went different. This was a Lina Khan policy that she, as the Biden-era head of the FTC was working on federally along with MANY other great policies. Lina Khan is a real one, and anything she's attached to is probably pretty good common sense fair policy that should looked at and considered. Mamdani was very smart to scoop her up and add her to his team after she was removed by the Trump admin.

The corporations that have made life shitty for working class people and buying the politicians to ensure it stays that way have created the conditions for a competent uncorrupted politicians to have so many easy wins.
There is so much low-hanging fruit to materially improve the lives of his constituents in so many industries that it ensures politicians like Mamdani get tons of easy wins immediately after election. It's the best reputation builder to ensure he has plenty to run on for re-election and be a king-maker for NYC council races and other state and federal races too.

Ok, i know we all love him, but,
Isn't that a bit micromanaging? And btw, a little degrading towards the people, does he think that people are to dumb to cancel their subsribtions? And - actually, guys - if the lack of a cancelling button was considered a pressing social issue for you, you should all really reconsider your positions on several matters.
3
u/urson_black Grumpy old fart 12h ago
It's not about 'too dumb'. It's about corporations making it too difficult. I'm not in NY, but I recently had to cancel an "insurance program" my father had accidentally signed up for- I had to go through 2 levels of "customer service" and 10 minutes of 'alternative offers' to finally get the cancellation.
-2
u/DerLandmann 12h ago
Ok, you needed 15 Minutes to do it. Does that really justify governmental interference?
3
u/FatShinyRaccoon 12h ago
I've had to mail a certified letter to cancel my gym. Some of these things do not just take 15min
-1
u/DerLandmann 11h ago
So you were able to do it on your own, weren't you? This is basic things-that-adults-do. Nothing that a public adminisration of governments needs to take care of. It's not their job to take care of any inconvenience.
The capabilities of an administration are limited. Any amount of time that will be directed to this topic is time that is missing for solving real problems. Problems that need to be solved and can only be solved by governments and public administrations.
I can quit my streaming subsriptions on my own, i do not need a government to help me with that. But i can not increase the number of libraries or improve the local school curriculum on my own, I need the government to do that. So i would rather see my governmental bodies take care of the problems that i actually need a government for. Just as i would rather see my local fire departmen put out fires and not mow my lawn, as anoying as that is for me to do.
2
u/FatShinyRaccoon 11h ago
Idk man, that's a lot of words complaining about something that is a net benefit for all of us. My example wasnt even about streaming services so idk why your replying to me about that.
I shouldn't need to pay for certified letter to a gyms headquarters, period. I should be allowed to cancel in person or online.
Even the EU has the exact same protections under Directive 2023/2673. You're not disagreeing with me, but Europe as well
1
u/DerLandmann 10h ago
I doubt that it is a net benefit. As i said, the government is wasting time and ressources on "fixing" minor inconveniences.
You're not disagreeing with me, but Europe as well
Yes, and happily so. As do much europeans.

u/urson_black Grumpy old fart 11h ago
I do see your point- but there are a lot of sites that make it pointlessly difficult to unsubscribe with the intent of people giving up rather than canceling.
1
u/ActuatorLower8371 11h ago
And - actually, guys - if the lack of a cancelling button was considered a pressing social issue for you, you should all really reconsider your positions on several matters.
what are you even talking about
1
u/DerLandmann 10h ago
I am talking about that the mayor of the biggest city is praised for wasting his time on making sure that you can unsubsrcibe wit a single click of a button.
1
u/ActuatorLower8371 10h ago
Wasting his time? How much time do you think this took lol
1
1
u/DerLandmann 10h ago
Quite a lot, because such thing is not done with letting out a tweet. This will result in a law that runs over dozens of pages, will be challenged and re-challenged, people who have more important things to do will have to ponder if this rules apply only to companies in NY or to such making Business in NY and how to make sure that any borderline cases are either covered or ruled out, how "doing businessin NY" is actually defined, which cases of subscipions are coverd and which not, how prominent taht 1-click-buton has to be and and and.
Announcing that somehing will be done and actually doing them are vastly different things.
And all those people who will or have spend time working all this out did not spend time doing really important work that would actually help citizens.
I recycle my example of the fire department mowing my lawn. That would free me from the inconvenience, but they have more important things to do.
1
u/ActuatorLower8371 10h ago
Quite the imagination you've got there. You should try not to get yourself all worked up over it.
1
u/DerLandmann 10h ago
No imagination, experience. Unfortunately, i often have to work such cases, or at least the outcome of such cases.
And BTW: The law that the Euroepan Union passed for a similar thing is 23 pages long.
