Looking into this, it seems that the flight crew initially allowed the woman to remain standing for the majority of the short flight once they were notified. Due to safety protocols the airline has to follow, and because there were no other available seats, she was told that she had to return to her seat until they landed.
For some reason, United did not contact law enforcement regarding this, and the man was allowed to leave. The woman stated that one United employee told her that internal protocols were not followed and advised her to file an official complaint. Hopefully law enforcement gets involved and arrests the man, as well as something being done with United beyond the $100 credit, because if any of this is true, then this is a failure on so many levels for United.
Airlines don’t actually do that anymore and haven’t for over a decade.
In the US it was found to be discrimination to force someone to change seats based on their sex.
What they actually do these days is try to seat the child near the galley where they can be observed by the FAs.
As for this case, I agree with you. I think there would be plenty of men willing to make that change voluntarily if asked to do so. If I weren’t traveling with my family, I certainly would.
