Yup. The Nazis discouraged women from being thin because they wanted them to be constantly popping out babies.

Quick fact Hitler was almost entirely vegetarian who viewed killing animals as wrong, and passed some of the strictest animal welfare laws on earth.Ā
The idiotic idea that every single thing the Nazis did was evil and wrong Ā is reactionary. We shouldnāt go back to abusing animals in German because HitlerĀ
Btw the #1 German woman ideal Ā had a full pregnant belly and two kids adoringly staring at her husband on the front.Ā
They encouraged not being glutinous towards rationed supplies, because they were isolated with maritime trade cut off during the two front war with Russia and the west.
I guess They did encourage men to not be incredibly obese, but this was because it would prevent you from being able to fight in war in several ways.Ā
people fighting modern obesity are just trying to save your life, because you will die by 50 if your morbidly obese.
it will also be a shitty unhealthy life of pain and chronic illness once you enter your late 35-40, and if your lucky you will last until 60 when your body shuts down and you die 50 years early.Ā

u/stonedPict2 Aug 26 '26
Hitler was fine with killing animals, he was a vegetarian because he had gastrointestinal issues and couldn't really digest meat well.
He did pass a lot of animal welfare reforms, but they weren't really that strict by modern standards and a lot of them were made so the Nazis could attack kosher food production. Even the encouragement to eat less meat was more about self-sufficiency of the German economy and a belief that austere diets would make the German people mentally and physically stronger rather than opposition to killing animals.

u/Personal_Chair6134 Aug 25 '26
The fact that Hitler was a strict vegetarian just underscores the point that being vegetarian does not give you a moral soapbox to stand on.

Not directly being part of the suffering and mass killing of countless living beings is, morally, more ethical than killing and/or eating feeling animals.
Doesn't mean you're a better person in general and you still can be a bad person overall but if two people are morally average (not volunteering in the soup kitchen but also not punching babies), of course one is better than the other.

Fascism was not on the rise in the 90s during the heroin chic era.
What we're seeing now is ozempic, not fascism.
I mean we're also seeing fascism, but that's a different, unrelated problem.
Actually, we should be putting a lot more effort into resisting fascism and less effort into promoting obesity (or into defending anorexia, both are toxic body positivity).

I think there are useful things to be said about sports practice and ideology / culture. In the first half of the 20th century sports became popular in a context of nationalism and preparation for war. States wanted male populations that were fit for battle, especially in Europe, especially the more warlike nations.
Nowadays however the major sport trend is not team sports, it's "fitness". It's more related to hustle culture, "the grind", self-help books and even the dating scene, than to nationalism. I think it can be read as part of an increase in individualism and loneliness, as opposed to scoutism or team sports which are also social events.
So, yes, it's interesting to think about health and sports trends from a political and cultural perspective, I just don't think the fascism reading really works here.

This is questionable history tbh. Fascists generally wanted women to look fertile, submissive, and uniform. They didn't like the skinny, androgynous look that became popular in the 1920s because they wanted women to be used as baby factories if they were the right kind of woman and to be dead if they were the wrong kind of women.
4
u/TheMaskOffKid Aug 25 '26
Well the original fascists were Italians, of course they liked thick bitches

1
u/Money_Statement_9861 Aug 25 '26
The current flavor of fascism is contradicts itself in this manner because it swings wildly on the line between classic fascism and reality TV show business fascism.
They also want women to pop out (white) babies but at the same time you have idiots destroying their bodies with weird health conspiracies like antivax, mar a lago face plastic surgery addiction, etc.
Maha has signs of both because they want to raise sperm count in men and other stuff to make more babies but at the same time they are doing raw milk and weird health conspiracy theories.
5
u/OKiPULLUP123455 Aug 25 '26
Being healthy is racist now
1
u/Sea_Impress_2620 Aug 26 '26
If having strong and natural bodies was the ideal I would agree. But this current ozempic chic is not healthy. Being dangerously thin and fragile can cause infertility, heart issues, messed up periods and osteoporosis for women.
And as a woman who lifts, it is shocking how physically weak extremely thin women are. They couldn't carry grocery bags, couldn't do single push up, their arms looked like I could snap them in half. It was always these extremely skinny friends who got harrassed the most when we went out, and they were often terrified men. I was harrassed too, but I was able to defend myself and those friends.
I have never, ever in my life wished I was less strong. Sure some clothes don't really fit me, but I would always choose to be stronger than my current self than weaker. Being somewhat strong is so conventient and makes life less scary. So every time being small and weak is trendy for women, it makes me think who benefits for women being weak, submissive and not having career or education. And answers is loser men who want a woman who can't leave them. And what political stance does men like that have? Right wing, almost always.

u/Cheshire-Cad Aug 25 '26
On the one hand, this sounds pretty kooky.
On the other hand, fascism has the bad habit of turning even the most deranged social conspiracy into reality. Those twats had germaphobia against melanin in their drinking fountains. Nothing is off the table for them.
5
u/Gojira085 Aug 25 '26
It is kooky. Or at the very least cherry picking regimes. The historical socialist dictatorships of the last century also had health and wellness movement along the exact same lines Nazi Germany did
4
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 25 '26
It should be pointed out that the nazi focus on public health was appropriated from the socialists. The socialists wanted people to be healthy, both through public healthcare and people taking care of themselves. While the nazis appropriated the idea, and mutated it for their own purposes, where men should be healthy warriors and women should be healthy housewives who give birth to plenty of "aryan" children. We've seen a return of these ideas in recent decades, with neo-nazi "activeclubs" and the "trad-wife" ideal.
1
u/Alternative_Cycle150 Aug 26 '26
"The socialists wanted people to be healthy, both through public healthcare and people taking care of themselves"
i mean not to say that the socialists didn't indeed want that, but, like... doesn't EVERYONE? to paint this as an explicitly socialist idea seems a bit far-fetched to me
1
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 26 '26
No, the nazis only wanted the "aryans" to be fit and healthy; the conservatives didn't care about regular people; the liberals wanted some money to be spent on helping the poor.

"Men should be warriors and women should be healthy to have children" has been the Human Default for all of human existence.
1
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 26 '26
Nope, we don't have warriors until settlements grew forth. For most of human existance we've been egalitarian semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers.
1
u/Mysterious_Point9516 Aug 26 '26
First of all, the idea that we had no inter-band conflict is ridiculous and patently wrong. Second, women trapped and men hunted for a reason.
Let's not use historical revisionism to paint a picture of biological evolution that never happened.
1
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 26 '26
Warriors are a social strata that did not exist when we were hunter-gatherers, just because people came into conflict doesn't automatically make them warriors, anymore than two people fighting in a bar become soldiers.
1
u/Mysterious_Point9516 Aug 26 '26
You're confusing pedantry for a display of knowledge.
1
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 26 '26
And you confuse opinion for knowledge.
1
u/Mysterious_Point9516 Aug 27 '26
You're pretending men didn't, and don't, engage in risk taking behaviors more than women because you're trying to push a modern narrative of equality that did not exist.
You should perhaps do some real research instead of smugly reading feminist reinterpretations of mythology and pretending you're getting the true story.
1
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 27 '26
You keep moving the goalposts, we went from warrior castes to hunters and now you're talking about "risk taking behaviours".
I have studied both history and archaeology for years, so I put my knowledge on the topic above what you find in youtube videos.

The consequences of "everything is a social construct"
1
u/Syresiv Aug 27 '26
Many things are to be fair. The cardiovascular consequences of obesity aren't socially constructed, but the stigma and scorn (which don't hit similarly unhealthy lifestyles equally) very much are.
1
u/Daniel_The_Thinker Aug 27 '26
Of course but people these days are far too interested in rationalizing their impulses rather than confronting reality.
What you say is true though, obesity is just one form of unhealthiness that is scrutinized more due to its visibility.

u/Haunting-Watch8240 Aug 25 '26
Idiocy from the feminists, as per usual. Never before were people so fat as they are today. Going back down in weight through being mindful of what you eat is one of the easiest wins in modern times for the masses (pun intended).
1
u/sadistica23 Aug 26 '26
Before the modern era, being fat was a symbol of wealth and privilege. The overwhelming majority of people simply could not afford to eat enough consistently to be fat.
1
u/Haunting-Watch8240 Aug 26 '26
And in many places on Earth, the ability to be fat remains a privilege to this day. Westerners and Chinese are very much privileged people, don't misunderstand that. But now that you and I can be fat, perhaps we ought to consider the implications of that, delivered to us by the way of the scientific method. Overall dumb, it is a privilege we ought not to excercise, just as drinking out of a toilet bowl is a privilege compared to those without one.
1
u/Medical_Initial6518 Aug 26 '26
When was that the case? For most of our history, the ideal aristocratic figure was not that different from the ideal labourer's figure. The aristocracy has always been obsessed with martial virtue. This is a cheap folk-fact and it is a lazy defense of obesity. I would call fatness in those times a sign of wealth and privilege, but certainly not a symbol. A symbol is idealized.
1
u/McENEN Aug 26 '26
It was the case for centuries. There is evidence of it from China in year 650 and renaissance Europe. I would leave a source but this is the most googleable fact you can check yourself in 30 secs.
1
u/Medical_Initial6518 Aug 27 '26

1
u/Haunting-Watch8240 Aug 27 '26
And that is why all the statues from the time are rotund and all the portraits of rich people represent fat slobs? Oh wait, no...
Come on, it was the rich old men who could get away with such a cheap excuse, but in youth they were lean and trained warriors, and expected their sons to be the fit as well. Similar goes for the ladies. Their revealed preference is fitness.
1
u/McENEN Aug 27 '26
Statues were most commonly made before being fat became popular. It became a sign of wealth in Europe kinda around the same period gunpowder was developed and being a strong warrior was less important for the battlefield.
You can use all the logic you want but the fact is multiple historians agree that being fat was a status symbol across the merchant class and nobility.
Here is a research paper on it: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/358982150_Historical_and_cultural_aspects_of_obesity_From_a_symbol_of_wealth_and_prosperity_to_the_epidemic_of_the_21st_century

2
u/davidliterally1984 Aug 26 '26

I think its mostly racism and not wanting to like something they have associated with black people. Even though they definitely do like a women with curves, they just dont want to be seen with one.

Being thin is back because people like it. Because extraordinary in physical appearance is just one part of being a model or music star. Especially for women.
Additionally the ozempic era is upon us, being fat, if you are well to do, is basically a choice now. No crazy surgery required. Take your pill, get skinny. I think glp1 kicked it off more than anything.
America feels exactly the same politically as it always has. It just comes in faster waves. Tik tok mobilizes people quickly. But, we only care about the new thing. Not real issues, otherwise we would be burning down our cities due to wealth disparity.

I'll almost certainly get downvoted for this - but by that definition...we must have been living in a fascist society given how much attention there was to having women be as thin as possible (at least in the western world). I'd also point out that (and I may as well be following Godwin's Law here) - the Nazi ideal was for a woman to have a figure with prominent child-bearing hips so as to proliferate what they viewed to be the "perfect" race.
Though there is a point about how Fascism leads to heightened control over women and a decline over their autonomy.
I will now await for the downvotes to wash over me.

My hot take is that attractive women like the one in the OP's meme subconsciously push the underlying message of "it''s okay to be fat" because it helps to "thin" the herd in terms of sexual marketplace competition. That woman is not fat. She's telling the fatsos out there to feel okay about being fat, because that makes her more attractive in comparison.
We've heard variations of the "it's okay to be fat" message being targeted towards women for decades now, well before the rise of the contemporary fascist revival (which should hopefully dissipate in time) and it's often dressed up in the language of whatever the "progressive/feminist topic du jour" is at that particular moment in history.
It's all a clever ruse by the Sexually Attractive Women cohort to look like solidarity for other women, while tacitly encouraging them to stay fat to avoid additional competition. Remember, all these ladies are competing for the same incredibly small percentage of the male population, the 6,6,6 guys.
So, in short, this lady is full of hot air, and it's not a hot take at all.

Look, I'm a big ol' wokey woke who can acknowledge systemic and historical contexts of social issues, but some of these connections are ridiculous and not historically true. While I personally prefer my partners to have a little bit of thickness, being attracted to someone who is in good shape is extremely normal and natural from a biological perspective and it's a pretty big stretch to act like that's because of fascism or p***philia. There's definitely unrealistic standards we're fed, but it's getting pretty ridiculous the extent to which adult women are being infantilized by each other lately. Being attracted to a skinny person isn't p***philia, there are countless skinny adults. Being attracted to a short person isn't p***philia, there are countless adults who are short. I saw a 35 year old get called a p*do for dating a 28 year old, but a 28 year old woman is fully matured and old enough to make her own choices.
"The only women you should be attracted to are overweight average-height-or-above women unless you're a fascist or p*do" nonsense is getting old and is downright disrespectful to the premise that all body types can be beautiful and attractive.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.
And Nazis actually discouraged German women from being thin because they were expected to be baby factories.

This is an interesting angle that I have never examined, forgive my privilege.
I'll have a dive into the subject.
Any academic studies on the subject, do you know, that you recommend?
Genuinely unsure why I've been downvoted (I mean, I can guess) but I stand by every word above.

Donāt worry about it, itās based on nothing but the fact that glp1 and trump are temporally correlated and so the modern increase in fascism must also mean that having preferences towards athleticism makes you a gay pedophile. Everyone has to be into morbid obesity and tall women because fake feminism reasons. I give it about 2 weeks before the rhetoric devolves to if youāve a bmi below 32 then your romantic partners are all pedophiles. It doesnāt take long for fake body positivity to turn into skinny body shaming.

Icky.
Edit.. just to expand on this.
Unserious and bitter comments that lack curiosity are uninteresting.
If you have something to actually say on the situation, rather than barking buzzwords and overhead narratives, I'll be here.

Lol. Everything is fascism.

Not everything, but much of the current trend in right-wing western politics is no less than tangentially connected to fascist politics.

Sure. I agree. But "no less than tangentially" is all but the lowest you can set the bar.

What? Thin obsessions have existed for decades, centuries even. There is no correlation here at all. Its resurgence is probably a coincedence. Still a tonne of content out there promoting healthy diets and excercise. Which is about being fit and healthy as opposed to just "skinny"

Thinness happens naturally when people begin to starve, too. It all tracks.
