I'm just going to jump ahead in the comments to explain for people who (actually correctly) point out how some charities are actually bad.
Yes, these people that agree with Elon are, technically, correct. Lot's of charities are very "top heavy" and result in sometimes seeing only a ratio of $0.05 per every $1.00 donated being used for the cause. It should be noted that these "bad charities" are not actually making things "worse" per-se but just capitalizing on a financial situation.
HOWEVER (a big one)
Mackenzie Scott doesn't just throw the money out there. She has a specific team (Yield Giving) that has specific 3rd party programs that vet, donate, then circle back to these charities. (Bridgespan Group, Lever for Change, Candid, and Charity Navigator,)
In fact, Her and her team have actually revoked donations as a result of them mishandling them.
Also, another REALLY BIG HOWEVER, is that in the US, these charities are doing something where there lacks support from the government. In situations, like DOGE cutting The Trevor Project, CARE, and HIAS) there was now $0.00 out of $1.00 being used to help people in those programs.
Some would argue that even getting $0.50 per $1.00 donated is better than getting $0 from the government that is supposed to have a program in place to help those who are most vulnerable.
5
u/flactulantmonkey Aug 22 '26
Even if all the money stayed in the top heavy management structure, she’s successfully removed it from the 1%. The levels of money she’s moving, it’s more about the gross effect of the flow into various economic brackets. The crazy thing to me is that, as far as I know, her net worth hasn’t actually dropped while doing all this.
3
u/StrengthChemical653 Aug 22 '26
Her net worth is actually proof of just how messed up our system is to make sure billionaires STAY billionaires.
If you were handed 10 Billion Dollars, all you have to do to keep 10 Billion Dollars is... almost nothing.
You start with $10 Billion, invest it into Berkshire Hathaway, Amazon, Apple, Etc. and leave it alone, at the end of the year you yeild 9 - 50% growth... just like that, your $10 Billion is around $12-15 Billion.
And with the donations, you use those against any taxable revenue to taper off any bleeding of money.

The amount of money to end world hunger is around $50 Billion dollars.
Scott doesn't have that money to give nor would she be able to perpetuate charitable donations by liquifying all interest-based finances.
But her team (not really her) has donated to Feeding America, Food Security Equity Impact fund, and A LOT of Meals on Wheels programs. Effectively feeding around 40 Million people.
And, if you're curious; BOTH Elon Musk and Mackenzie Scott donate to Feeding America...

I just looked it up. Musk is estimated to have given 500 Million outside of his foundation (which basically remains his money and isn't a charity). While receiving 2 Billion (4X) that amount back as tax benefits. Guy remains an asshole.

You'd think that a man worth a trillion plus - on paper - would realize that a little discretionary noblesse oblige would do wonders for your public image. Say he tossed $5B - sand off the beach - to food banks or opium recovery clinics in rural America - why he'd reap huge reputational benefits. He'd be wise to look back to the Gilded Age and see what the Robber Barons did win over (or deflect) public opinion. At the end of the day he and his family and employees must live in the real world. Its better to be welcomed.

Typical right-wing propaganda: "We don't need the government to provide for the poor and disadvantaged. If we could just get the government out of it, charities would step in to care for these people."
Billionaire gives a bunch of money to charity.
Right-wing reaction: "Giving money to charity makes the world worse."

Oh yeah, remember when bezos had to give away half his wealth to his ex wife? I bet that financially crippled him so bad. I bet if you checked on him now, he'd be a husk of a man without a cent to his name. Even more proof that we shouldn't ever tax our precious billionaires.

When I was growing up, way back in the mists of time, there was a reasonably well known phycologist call Dr. Murray Banks, who used to say, anyone pursuing just wealth, had deeper issues, the best you can say about them is they are suffering in comfort, Must never made anything, he never invented anything, he never created anything, his life has been purely the pursuit of wealth, he cares not for the damage, mayhem or misery that pursuit has cost others, he will not repair any of that damage.
Of course he would attack others who don't share his desire for wealth, nothing his life has not been bought, including the love of others.
He simply cannot understand how others think or act, outside of that idea.

u/Limp-Bug9285 Aug 23 '26
She’s given huge chunks of her fortune to historically Black colleges like Howard University in part because of her literature and writing professor at Princeton, Toni Morrison, a graduate of Howard. Maybe she’s giving back because she wouldn’t have co-founded an online book company without her love of books.

Yeah, because he's a sociopath who doesn't believe in empathy.
Remember those altruism social experiments? Societies only work if everyone agrees to help each other. When enough people try to take advantage of the system for personal gain, the whole thing falls apart.

u/Ok_Discipline_8190 Aug 25 '26

From what I understand her donations just wiped out 40 billion from people’s medical debt. Thats freaking sad that people have to rely on the charity from 1 rich person instead of the American medical system being better.

Probably because he wants all of the impoverished people who live in shyte hole countries to just die already. Dude is a Nazi from apartheid South Africa whose father was an emerald dealer. I've seen him more than once doing the Nazi salute to crowds full of white nationalist. He'd rather have that money going to either AI or some other tech stuff. Definitely doesn't want that kind of money going towards poor caucasians in southern red states or any poor people, period. Not Saint Jude's or Shriners Hospitals, fuk Puerto Rico and their probably getting drinking water, kids with cancer, military veterans, SPCA, food banks, affordable housing, health care, raising the current federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour

Well, when your definition of "making things better" is giving everything to you, then of course it would seem worse.
This man's life will not end well if he keeps this up. Someone's gonna take a shot at him. I'm not encouraging that or saying it's right - I'm saying that if you keep killing people, telling people that empathy is the enemy, and taking all the resources for yourself, then yeah - someone, somewhere, sometime, is gonna get real fucking pissed off and take a shot at you. That's just human nature.
But then again I wouldn't expect Elon to understand a god damn thing about human nature or self-preservation beyond the boundaries of greed.

So, Miss Rachel is the anti-Christ for saying that all children deserve to be safe, and Mackenzie Scott is a monster for donating a massive amount of money to meaningful charities, but Elon is a saint and a scholar for attempting to, and largely succeeding, dismantle programs that keep people alive in times of need? This is the wildest timeline.

Correction. You hoarding wealth and refusing to give back in addition to the damage your farcical DOGE did are the kinds of things that make the world worse. Apartheid, that thing you and your father loved so much, made the world worse.
