My staunchly “Anti-Socialism” parents are legitimately defending Trumps $5000 bribe checks because Fox News explained how that’s different.
I swear we’re living in the twilight zone.30
u/Ifriendzonecats - Lib-Left 12h ago
The truth is that's the same as it's always been. Most anti-socialist people are in favor of socialist policies when they directly benefit from them (see farmers every time they get bailed out). But, anything that doesn't (directly benefit them) is anti-capitalist and anti-American.
2
u/Easy-Poetry9497 - Right 12h ago
I swear to god nobody knows what socialism is. Welfare is not socialism. Sidewalks and fire stations are not socialism. Single payer healthcare is not socialism, it’s a statutory entitlement.
Socialism is a system of political economy featuring the collective control of the means of production.
9
u/Sierra-117- - Centrist 12h ago
Yep, people have zero fucking clue what socialism or communism is. They basically boil it down to “socialism is when the government does stuff that benefits people rather than corporations”.
They also genuinely think somebody like Mamdami is “bribing voters” by… doing his job. Our political system has become so fucked that competent governance is now seen as so entirely strange that it is called a “bribe”.
I want off this ride…
6
u/Ifriendzonecats - Lib-Left 12h ago
It's funny seeing 'no true communism' coming from a right wing flair. Socialist policies are policies which push for collective ownership. And many right wing flairs are fine with collective ownership of risk for certain industries, they just get rabid when it comes to collective ownership of profit.

u/Easy-Poetry9497 - Right 11h ago
I don’t know why this comment is directed at me. I actually know what communism is, and how it differs from socialism.

Not just the farmers.
Seeing the cost of everything behind the scenes on the most normal of things rise since Trump got into office and people having to make an honest decision to buy necessities or not is real.
Meanwhile, retards fight over culture war shit is mentally taxing.

u/Hussaf - Centrist 12h ago
The non-stop culture war stuff from maga is exhausting. That’s all they do anymore. I miss the Republican Party.
4
u/Zickened - Left 10h ago
The sad thing for Gen Z is that this current iteration of Republican philosophies have nothing to do with the actual conservative party from decades ago, and they will never understand what being a conservative actually means. Now its just oligarchs clamoring for power and using culture war bullshit to keep people occupied.
At least the conservative party pre-2000 was understandable to some degree, and both sides were relatable.

u/jdiskxkfidobsvsgdi - Lib-Center 2h ago
When I was growing up in the Obama era it seemed like everyone around me viewed the presidency as a job somewhat akin to an ER surgeon, where you had to be serious, knowledgeable and willing to work long hours every day. Even Bush was thought to be a generally serious, hardworking adult at the time, and only stupid because the president is supposed to be held to a much higher standard than everyone else.
When Trump was running it seemed genuinely ridiculous to me that someone with no political experience, negative decorum and numerous obvious scandals would even be able to do the presidents job. Like, he genuinely seems to take the job less seriously than your average local restaurant owner, and everyone is ok with it. It’s so bizarre that people younger than me grew up with that completely normalized, whereas I thought the president was this super serious, talented figure (which is a dumb viewpoint for its own reasons, but I’m tired of typing)

The funny thing was Fox News had turned on Trump for a hot second in 2021, right after January 6th. No idea why they reverted back prior to 2024, if they refused to give him the time of day we could have had someone relatively normal in office.
13
u/Bunktavious - Left 10h ago
The entire GoP turned on him for a couple days - just go look at all the post Jan 6 speeches from the floor. Graham was calling for Trump's head.
Then the people with the money told them all to get back in line, and a week later they were back to felating Dear Leader.
5
u/Paetolus - Lib-Left 7h ago
Everyone turned on Trump. Once it was clear that he wouldn't face any consequences, they all fell back into line. They were probably expecting public opinion to shift on Trump, but overestimated the intelligence/standards of their constituents.
0
u/False-Reveal2993 - Lib-Center 7h ago
Well, it's changed on him now, whether it's from his refusal to release the other half of the Epstein disclosures or his participation in Iran, skyrocketing gas prices (and with it everything else). I hope dems sweep congress and nerf his last two years.

I have a feeling that CNN and the other left leaning news channels did more work to elect Trump than Fox News. Every chance they had to talk about Trump they will do so.
22
u/Foogie23 - Lib-Right 12h ago
This is true for first term Trump they gave him way too much coverage. Not true for the rest.
Fox News isn’t even news…it is literally just made up skits to make boomers angry enough to vote. How anybody can think Fox and CNN are the same is beyond me.

I watched some Fox News rarely as european. I think it is a pretty good news network compared to the others, if you talk about the news themselves. I remember CNN and BBC both maliciously editing videos to influence the public. I don't actually remember 1 instance of fox doing that.
17
u/Foogie23 - Lib-Right 12h ago
Since you said “rarely” I’m gonna let this completely idiotic and ignorant opinion slide.
3
u/Bunktavious - Left 11h ago
They don't need to edit, they simply ignore stories that don't inherently support their position.
Fox News biggest issue is the talking head "news anchors" whose only purpose was to rile up outrage and hatred among their viewers. Pete Hegseth, Janine Pirro, Jesse Watters, Laura Ingraham...
3
u/bigbenis2021 - Lib-Left 10h ago
Don’t forget Tucker Carlson literally just doing blood and soil rhetoric on primetime.
1
u/ploonk - Lib-Left 7h ago
None of these people are news anchors though. They are commentary show hosts. Their actual news anchors are not as loony but the overriding editorial bias still exists.
I get that the line is blurry on purpose, but still we can be precise.
1
u/Bunktavious - Left 6h ago
Fair. "Commentary Show Hosts" didn't exist back then, at least not on the news. Back then if you wanted an editorial on a topic, you'd watch someone like Donahue or Geraldo, who made no bones about stuff being their opinions.
Now, they intersperse them, and as you say, blue the lines on purpose.
7
u/Lib_No_Fib - Centrist 12h ago
Fox news settled the largest defamation case in US history for knowingly lying about voter fraud. They also used the idea that they are not news, only entertainment, as a legal defence in court

6

Operated by? No, not at all.
The chairman and CEO of CNN is a Brit who was previously the CEO of famously conservative publication The New York Times, as well as director general of famously conservative broadcasting channel the BBC.
The president of MSNBC (or MSNOW or whatever the fuck it’s called now) is a self described Progressive.

Most people today (OP and most people in this sub included) get their news by scrolling through a social media feed, and think they’re getting an unbiased opinions, or a good look of both sides. In reality, you can be getting 30 people’s opinions from different sides of the aisle, and still be getting fed propaganda without knowing it.
Whether it’s TikTok for you page, YouTube recommended, IG reels, any sub/reddit feed, etc, every feed isnt trying to show you what’s real, it’s trying to keep you online. Even the top comments on the posts you see are different depending on what will get you to engage.
Today, I think the only way to get good news is to find specific people who do a good job at analyzing news AND routinely engage with people who substantially disagree with them. I don’t mean people on the left and right disagreeing but coming together over “the elites”, I mean people who can sit down and defend their opinions against someone who disagrees. Then, at the very least, I can trust the news I get from them.

And they see nothing wrong with it. The biggest argument against (JR for example, but it's prevalent everywhere) joe rogan's fanbase is that basically no one fact checked his claims about a graph "debunking" climate change and they just went along with him, and he paraded that graph around for multiple months. The fucking graph debunked JR but turns out he, and his fanbase, can't read graphs, or read at all, because the article also explained what the graph represents.
