Politics Rob Hailman - Suspending my campaign for mayor

I have made the difficult decision to suspend my campaign for mayor of Peterborough, effective immediately. I will attend the events I have committed to, such as debates this week, and then will conduct no further campaign activities.

For the past month, I have sought to conduct this campaign while working two jobs. In recent days, it has become evident that this has meant compromising my ability to campaign, my existing commitments to my employers and my community, and my health and well-being.

Throughout the campaign, many people have told me they feel represented by my candidacy, as someone who knows first hand the struggle of today's high rents and housing instability, as someone who works multiple jobs to make ends meet, or as someone who relies on a public transit system that is too often inadequate.

I have long known, intellectually, that the privilege to be able to take time off work, or to not need to work at all, confers a huge advantage during an election, and this affects both the perspectives we hear on the campaign trail and the people we see in the council chamber. While my decision to end my campaign is a personal choice which I am wholly responsible for, I now understand those structural factors more deeply from my first-hand experience.

At the start of my campaign, I said that I didn't feel that the other candidates running for mayor shared my values. The intervening weeks have strengthened my certainty that this is the case.

I have attempted to express positions which offer an ambitious vision for a better Peterborough than today's status quo, but which are also based on a realistic view of the city's finances and future outlook.

Throughout the campaign, I have heard promises, specifically around spending and taxation, which are not grounded in reality. At best, these promises will simply be broken. At worst, attempting to fulfill them could mean draining the city's reserves, falling farther behind in maintaining our public infrastructure, and continuing to fail to address the city's most pressing issues.

While I am no longer campaigning, I remain a candidate and my name will appear on your ballot. I encourage you to vote your conscience in this election, in whatever way you choose.

To my supporters, I am deeply sorry if I have disappointed you.

Long before seeking election, I dedicated myself to learning about the issues facing our community, to bearing witness to the inequities and injustices in the structures and decisions of City Hall, and to speaking truth to power. It is clear to me that this, not elected office, is the best means for me to bring about the change I believe Peterborough needs.

If my campaign has inspired or encouraged you, I ask that you join me in that work, as citizens and as neighbours, both today and long after election day.

With love and gratitude, Rob

As much as free side of the road furniture is tempting, unless you are 100% certain it is pest free, it is NOT WORTH IT. good general rule is nothing made of fabric, no books, nothing you cant see all the corners of.

also, your landlord is responsible for pest prevention and treatment so if you already have an issue, tell them as soon as possible so it doesnt get worse and spread to your neighbours. its probably hard to study and concentrate with apartment pests as well

Event Peterborough Catholic School Trustee Candidate Meeting on Monday Oct 5 at 7pm

Although they don't get as much attention as Council or Mayor races, Trustee elections are very important!

Three reasons:

  • School Boards are facing distinct challenges around funding, budget, student achievement, AI, mandated changes to governance, and more.
  • Trustees establish local policies and oversee supplemental curriculum materials, ensuring that classroom guidelines align with local oversight and educational goals.
  • Trustees are elected every four years – this is our community’s time to choose – the next time will be 2030.

Knights of Columbus Council #10785 is hosting a Catholic School Board Trustee Candidate Night with all five candidates in the City of Peterborough and all three candidates in the County of Peterborough.

When: Monday October 5th at 7pm

Where: St. Anne's Parish Hall, 859 Barnardo Ave, Peterborough

Doors Open at 6:30pm. The program starts at 7pm with introductions, a question period, and closing remarks. The formal event should be completed by 8:30pm and candidates will be available afterward to meet and greet.

All are welcome!

Politics Which mayoral candidate would best repair the relationship between the city and the county ?

For most of the last thirty years the city and county has had an adversarial relationship . I can think of only things involving the hospital , the conservation authority, the health unit and the paramedics is there much cooperation . Issues involving economic development , tourism , the airport seem to suffer from "unrecognizable differences" . The city is too small to go it alone on major projects without significant help from other levels of government . Example :the new Memorial Centre . Who can fix this? Or do we need a an entire new council?

Question Fabric Recycling?

I have a bunch of old sheets, towels, and threadbare pants that I'd like to recycle. I looked on the City's website and it seemed to indicate they could be dropped off at the Material Recycling Centre on Pido Road, but that centre itself has no website and photos on Google Maps only show containers for the usual paper/plastic and containers. Any insights if they take fabrics, or if there is somewhere else that would recycle them?

Help Drivers, Pay Attention - West End

To everyone driving through the Lansdowne St. W & Kawartha Heights area, please be extra careful and pay attention to the traffic and pedestrian lights.

I completely understand that the construction in the area can be frustrating and confusing to navigate. However, I cross this intersection every day, and since construction started, I have had way too many close calls with vehicles almost hitting me while I’m crossing.

Thankfully, I’m very aware of my surroundings when crossing a street, so I can usually recognize when a vehicle is approaching too quickly and likely isn’t going to stop. But there was one occasion where a vehicle came so close to me that I may as well have been a hood ornament.

What made it worse was that I had the right-of-way, yet the driver became angry with me and continued through, nearly hitting me a second time.

I’m sharing this because not every pedestrian is going to be as aware of their surroundings. Children, seniors, people with disabilities, distracted pedestrians, or someone simply not expecting a vehicle to run the light may not have the same ability to react in time.

Please slow down, watch the lights, watch for pedestrians, and give people enough time and space to cross safely. Construction or not, getting somewhere a few seconds faster isn’t worth someone’s safety.

And honestly, this is something worth continuing even after the construction is finished.

Please look up from your phone, the road ahead, pay attention, and remember that there are people crossing there every day.

Hello Peterborough. My son took in a bunny because it was being mistreated. He cannot keep him. He requests that they're knowledgeable about taking care of a bunny. He wants to make sure that Kevin is in a safe healthy enviroment. He comes with everything he needs as my son switched him to bunny food instead of the gerbil food he came with.

If you have a good heart and wants a furry friend that needs a loving home. Please DM me and we can set up a meeting pleace let me know.

Thank you!!! Please share.

Update...We will be taking Kevin to the shelter. Thank you everyone!

Politics Dear Peterborough

Post image
0 Upvotes

Dear Peterborough,

I’ve loved you since the day I got here at two years old with my sister, when my dad started at Quaker Oats and my mom at Trent University.
I loved you through my school years at Edmison Heights and Adam Scott.
I loved you in my teen years, taking the bus downtown to Peterborough Square to see my pals.
And I loved you after I graduated from Trent and went to the big city to start my career.
Like I’ve said, there’s something in the water. You drew me back. It’s been home for Christi and me and our two daughters ever since.
I’ve tried to show my love for you back as much as I could. The United Way campaign, Canadian Canoe Museum, Chamber of Commerce, coaching soccer and being part of Peterborough youth indoor soccer executive.
Heck, starting PTBOCanada was really a love letter to my hometown.
Here’s the thing, though. What and whom you love the most needs to hear the hard truth every once in a while. That’s how we grow.
And today, my hard truth for the city I love is that it needs help. Not caretaking, not the status quo. Peterborough needs a bold change in direction to get to where it needs to be.
That’s why I’m here, one day away from the start of online voting to decide who will be the next mayor of our city.
I’m not running for mayor to be liked.
I’m not running for mayor because it’s my turn.
I’m running for mayor because I love this city so much. And I’m running because the city needs the kind of bold plan I’m proposing to get itself back on the right track. To be the kind of city that every one of its residents love.
And the kind of city that loves its residents back.
I’ve worked hard during this campaign to earn your trust. I’ve knocked on more than 11,000 doors with my team. Hosted dozens of community sessions to hear from you. Met with hundreds of you one-on-one to learn what’s working and what needs fixing.
There’s more listening to do. And much more work to do.
Peterborough, I love you.
And tomorrow at 10AM when online voting begins, I would be honoured to have your vote.

Love, Neil.

I’m really concerned about the upcoming election. I am most aligned with Rob Hailmans platform but I haven’t seen many of his signs posted around town. I think he was added in too late. What do you guys think the likelihood of him getting voted in is?

This is in reference to an earlier post a couple of weeks ago that reddit itself took down for no apparent reason.

Peanut is not up for adoption yet, but now that my fiancé and I have new jobs, maybe, we could get her back.

She would be spayed by then, and we would be moving out to a new place.

I know I shouldn't get my hope so high.

But she's my baby girl.

I am not giving up on my life nor hers.

Also, sorry for that lousy audio at the end, during the editing process it sounded close to perfect. I might just redo that bit all over again.

News Examiner Editorial: Closed door meetings are not business as usual

Thumbnail
thepeterboroughexaminer.com
56 Upvotes

Peterborough Police Chief Stu Betts and the police services board just got a head start on indoctrinating the next city council into the closed-door world.

Betts will no doubt object to the idea that city police were using indoctrination tactics when all municipal election candidates were invited to a closed-door meeting.

A meeting where only the police and candidates will ever know exactly what was said.

Where the people who vote for council candidates and pay taxes that fund the $42 million police budget were kept in the dark about what those candidates were hearing from public employees.

Indoctrination is defined as continually repeating a message so that it becomes accepted as the way things are — common, shared wisdom.

The indoctrination factor in that closed-door meeting 16 of 35 candidates attended last week wasn’t related to the facts of police spending, or how provincial legislation defines the relationship between city police and elected council members.

Those are well documented public information. Anyone interested can look up the legislation, or go onto the police website to see budget information — although not in much detail.

The troubling element of the closed-door meeting is that it starts potential new councillors off with the idea that closed meetings between police and politicians are simple, innocent and necessary.

The way things are done. Nothing to see here.

Police officials said similar closed meetings happened during the 2014 and 2022 election campaigns. Just part of the regular order of business.

Candidates who bought into that message can be expected to agree, if they are elected, that closed door meetings with council are also business as usual.

But they aren’t.

"Provincial legislation is very clear about what municipal councils can discuss away from the ears and eyes of the public.

Betts made the point that a lot of closed-door conversation was a review of provincial laws and regulations that define the relationship between the police department and council.

There is no need to present that to would-be councillors in private. The relationship is black and white.

Police boards set policy and have an oversight obligation to ensure those directions are being followed. Operational decisions are made by the chief and his team.

The chief, who reports to the board, recommends a budget, which the police board reviews, approves after debate, and sends to city council.

Council can ask for changes to the budget, but has no say in how money is spent on on-the-ground policing.

There is no need to review that relationship in private.

Betts called the session “simply a sharing of information” and predicted “it’ll be rather mundane.”

Candidates interviewed by The Examiner after the meeting all said the information they heard was all publicly available.

So, have a public meeting. Don’t hide behind the argument that candidates are more comfortable discussing tough topics like policing the homeless if no one is listening.

And that public servants are more likely to give frank answers if their opinions stay private.

That might be true, but it’s not in the public interest.

Candid public opinions backed by checkable facts are the lifeblood of good, representative government.

But in the end, how much closed-door propagandizing did or didn’t happen is not the major concern.

Nearly half of current election candidates answered a police call to shut the public out of a meeting they say dealt only with publicly available information.

That’s a bad start down a slippery slope."
