Free PLC Programs:

  • Beckhoff TwinCAT Product page

  • Codesys 3.5 is completely free with in-built simulation capabilities so you can run any code you want. Also, if paired up with Factory I/O over OPC you can simulate whole factories and get into programming.
    https://store.codesys.com/codesys.html?___store=en

  • Rockwell's CCW V12 is free and the latest version 12.0 comes with a PLC software emulator you can simulate I/O and test your code with: Download it here - /u/daBull33

  • GMWIN Programming Software for GLOFA series GMWIN is a software tool that writes a program and debugs for all types of GLOFA PLC. Its international standard language (LD, IL, SFC) and convenient user interface make programming and debugging simpler and more convenient.(Software) Download

  • AutomationDirect Do-more PLC Programming Software. It's free, comes with an emulator and tons of free training materials.

  • Open PLC Project. The OpenPLC is the first fully functional standardized open source PLC, both in software and in hardware. Our focus is to provide a low cost industrial solution for automation and research. Download (/u/Swingstates)

  • Horner Automation Group. Cscape Software

In our business we use Horner OCS controllers, which are an all-in-one PLC/HMI, with either on-board IO or also various remote IO options. The programming software is free (need to sign up for an account to download it), and the hardware is relatively inexpensive. There is support for both ladder and IEC 61131 languages. While a combo HMI/PLC is not an ideal solution for every situation, they are pretty decent for learning PLCs on real-world hardware as opposed to simulations. The downside is that tutorials and reference material specific to Horner hardware are limited apart from what they produce themselves. - /u/fishintmrw

HMI/SCADA:

  • Trihedral Engineering offers a 50 tag development/runtime license with all I/O drivers for free, VTScadaLight. https://www.trihedral.com/download-vtscada

  • Ignition offers a functional free trial (it just asks you to click for a button every 2 hours).

  • Perhaps AdvancedHMI? Although it IS a lot complicated compared against an industrial solution.

  • IPESOFT D2000 Raspberry Pi version is free (up-to 50 io tags), with wide range of supported protocols.

  • Crimson 3.0 by Red Lion is also free and offers a free emulator (emulator seems to be disabled in v3.1). With a bit of work (need to communicate with Modbus instead of built in Do-more drivers), you can even connect that HMI emulator to the do-more emulator and have a fully functioning HMI/PLC simulator on your desk top which is pretty convenient. Personal Stories:

/u/DrEagleTalon

Hello, glad you come here for help. I'm an Automation Engineer for Tysons Foods in a plant in Indiana. I work with PLCs on a daily basis and was recently in Iowa for further training. I have no degree, just experience and am 27 years old. Not bragging but I make $30+ an hour and love my job. It just goes to show the stuff you are learning now can propel your career. PLCs are needed in every factory/plant in the world (for the most part). It is in high demand and the technology is growing. This is a great course and I hope you enjoy it and stay on it. You could go far.

With that out of the way, if I where you I would start with RSLogix Pro. It's a software from The Learning Pit it is basic and old but very useful. The software takes you through simulations such as a garage door, traffic light, silo and boxing, conveyors and the dreaded Elevator simulation. It helps you learn to apply what you will learn to real word circumstances. It makes you develop everything yourself and is in my opinion one of the single greatest learning utensils for someone starting out. It starts easy and dips your toes and gets progressively harder. It's fun as well watching the animations. Watching and hearing your garage door catch on fire or your Silo Boxing station dumping tons of "grain" until the room fills up is fun and makes the completion of a simulation very gratifying.

While RSLogix Pro is based on older software, RsLogix is still used today. Almost every plant I have worked at has used some type of Allen Bradley PLC. Studio 5000 is in wide use and you will find that most ladder logic is applicable in most places. With that said I would also turn to Udemy for help in progressing past simple instructions and getting into advanced Functions such as PID. This amazing PLC course on UDemy is extremely cheap, gives you the software and teaches you everything from beginner to the most advanced there is. It is worth it for anyone at any level in my opinion and is a resource I turn to often.

Also getting away from Allen Bradley I would suggest trying to find some downloads or get a chance to play with Unity Pro XLS. It's from Schneider Electric and I believe has been rebranded under the EcoStruxure family now. We use Unity extensively where I am at and modicons are extremely popular in the industry. Another you might try is buying a PICO or Zelio for PICOSoft or ZELIOSoft. They are small, simple and cheap. I wired up my garage door with this and was a great way to learn hands in when I was starting out. You can find used PICOs on eBay really cheap. There is a ton of literature and videos online. YouTube is another good resource. Check everything out, learn all you can. Some other software that is popular where I've been is Connected Components Workbench and Vijeo.

Best of luck, I hope this helps. Feel free to message me for more info or details.

Best Language to use in S7 Siemens?

I was originally trained on Ladder in Allan Bradley, later moved on to Block and a Little SFC. I spent Two years translating programming out of IL (STL). I've played in python and java.

My Current Job is Almost all Instruction list but is over due to be re-written and standardized across all the PLC in our area. What is the best language to Write in?

I'm not a big fan of S7 networks as far as ladder goes and I don't mind FB but I believe all functions should be written in ST just to keep "certain peoples" fingers out of it. In theory we should never have maintenance people in the program.

What are your thoughts?

HELP TO INSTAL TIA PORTAL V15

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for some help before I completely lose my mind. I'm trying to download TIA Portal V15 on Windows 10, but it freezes when I click "Accept" on the terms and conditions. I tried forcing a silent installation, and now it's stuck in an installation loop; I've been trying to download it for about six hours.

Need programming software for legacy Koyo (CKE) SM-16T PLC to migrate logic

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have the PLC programming software for this unit (Koyo Electronics Wuxi SM-16T / CKE)? I’ve searched online but haven’t been able to find it, likely because it is an older regional model.

I have two identical machines, but the PLC in one of them has failed. My goal is to upload and copy the ladder logic from the working unit so I can rewrite and migrate the program into a different brand's PLC.

To do this, I need the programming software K-Programmer / K-PRO . If anyone has a copy, knows an active archive link, or can confirm which software works for this exact model, I’d really appreciate your help!

ADC Powerflex 525 Update Parameters

I need to update p33, p34,p37 and a484 in the PF525.

Basically there’s a motor at my factory that’s a 1hp and the VFD parameters are set up as if the motor is a 3 hp.

If Im online with the processor. Can I change these parameters with the PLC still in run mode. Do I need to do a download to the PLC? Or simply save the project file while I’m online?

Horner Cscape Program Examples

Hi there. I'm currently working and programming with Horner Cscape 10. I use register based advanced ladder. I'm curious how the more experienced pro programmers would write programs compared to the way I do. Is there anyone in the forum that wouldn't mind sharing a few examples of Cscape programs you've written. Would appreciate it if you could reach out to me. Thanks

What's it like to be a SCADA engineer in the power industry vs manufacturing industry?

As an EE, I have some basic PLC knowledge though not the most proficient. I'm trying to lateral move to the SCADA field (power industry preferably).

I noticed many power-industry SCADA job descriptions have different "preferred skills/qualifications" from those in the manufacturing/pharmaceutical industry. I'm wondering what the experience is like in both industries in terms of skill sets, programs used, work-life balance or anything else you can think of etc.

Schneider Modicon Premium migration

Hello everyone.

We have a customer with several machines running Schneider Modicon Premium PLCs. Some I/O modules are failing, and replacement modules are becoming difficult to source. The customer wants to upgrade the control systems while retaining the existing electrical cabinets and field equipment.

We have the original PL7 Pro programs and electrical drawings. We are considering two options:

  • Migrating to Schneider M340.
  • Rebuilding the PLC software in TwinCAT.

The existing ladder code is difficult to follow, and some of the installed I/O modules appear to have no direct M340 equivalent, so we expect some engineering work either way.

Our experience is mainly with Beckhoff, with limited Schneider experience.

Has anyone done a similar migration? How much of the original program could you reuse, and what were the main challenges—particularly with specialist I/O and the existing HMI?

Would you favour migrating within Schneider or rebuilding in a platform you know well?

Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'm doing my capstone project using a PLC and an ESP32 for a two tank transfer system. I would like some tips or criticism from the design.

I'm planning to number the wires in a few days, and remove the breadboard and move the E-stop after i test the whole machine.

Any advice?

Bug in tia portal v19?

So... maybe I made a little mistake.

I have a CPU 1214 sitting on my desk, and I was messing around with it on my Ethernet network. Just a cable directly from the PLC to my PC, nothing else.

I used the Online Access function in TIA Portal to find the CPU, found it, and did a memory reset.

The problem is: this CPU has the same IP address as one of the PLCs in one of our factories.

Normally, when I connect to the factory network, I use Wi-Fi (gateway, etc.). When I'm messing around with PLCs on my desk, I normally turn off Wi-Fi so I don't accidentally connect to something I shouldn't.

Well... I was tired. REALLY tired. And I forgot to turn off Wi-Fi before doing the memory reset.

About 5 minutes later, Production calls me saying that a machine with that same IP address had stopped.

I went to the machine, opened the panel, and the safety PLC was already in alarm because of some unrelated issue that the OEM is currently dealing with. The Siemens PLC was stopped as well.

At that point I started thinking:

Did I just memory-reset the actual machine PLC?

I checked twice that I was using Online Access through the Ethernet adapter and not the Wi-Fi adapter. But now I'm wondering:

- Is it possible for TIA Portal to have found the PLC through Wi-Fi even though I selected the Ethernet interface?

- Could a memory reset have been sent to the machine PLC?

- Or, Tia portal is bugged or am I the bug?

OBS: only wifi through gateway has access to factory... In my little experience, online access can't pass through that.

The machine was basically brand new, so fortunately it wasn't a production disaster.

And yes, I will turn off the wifi when messing with IP's..

Server advertisement protocol?

I have a dehumidifier with a remote panel. After some reverse engineering, I found the main unit operates as a Modbus server and the remote panel operates as a Modbus client.

However, the main unit (Modbus server) is also periodically transmitting non-Modbus messages. They seem describe the server’s ID and address range, but do not use the Modbus CRC.

Are there any mainstream discovery/advertisement protocols? I suspect it might not be entirely proprietary but had trouble locating info on such…

Can TIA Portal V17 and V19 be installed on the same laptop?

I currently have Siemens TIA Portal V19 installed on my laptop.

I have received a backup project that was created in TIA Portal V17, so I’m planning to install V17 as well.

My questions are:

Can TIA Portal V17 and V19 coexist on the same Windows laptop?

Will installing V17 cause any conflicts or crashes with V19?

Are there any Siemens components/drivers I should be careful about during installation?

Is it better to install V17 alongside V19, or use a separate virtual machine/PC?

I mainly need V17 to open and modify the existing V17 project without upgrading it to V19.

Any advice from people who use multiple TIA Portal versions would be appreciated.

Beckhoff Power supply AX8620-0000-0102 Firmware 01.02 b002

Machine was commissioned years ago and currently uses AX8206 modules.

Can AX8620 firmware 01.02 b002 be upgraded directly to a newer AX8000 firmware version, or is an intermediate upgrade path required?

Beckhoff documentation mentions compatibility from 01.02 b008 onwards, but I cannot find a migration procedure for 01.02 b002.

To be or not to be

Okay hi, 24F, Automation Engineer here.

Being a woman in tech was my choice and on good days? I LOVE it. Nothing beats the high of fixing something that everyone else gave up on. I'm literally like Bob the Builder.

On bad days? When I can't fix it? I want to throw my laptop in a river, quit, move to the mountains and become a goat herder. No kidding.

Context: I'm only in my 3rd year, working with PLC troubleshooting, SCADA and MES as an end user in MNCs, but somehow I'm already at a rank that people usually hit after 6-8 years. Which sounds cool on LinkedIn but is SO awkward IRL.

Picture this: You're the youngest person in the room, a girl, telling a bunch of uncles (literally double my age, some have been in the company since before I was born) what to do. They look at you like "beta, are you sure?" And you can never just say YES in the first go. You have to double, triple check everything because if you mess up, it's not just "she made a mistake", it's "see, that's what happens".

I don't like hardcore coding, so software is a big no for me.

Now my brain is doing that classic 3 AM thing:

Option A: Stick it out, become the badass automation lady.

Option B: Career switch?? CFA? Finance looks kinda fun ngl.

Option C: Say bye to all this and just... go settle in the mountains?

Has anyone been here? Especially other women in core engineering? Did you switch? Did you stay?

I can literally be anything I want, problem is I have no idea what I want. Pls be nice.

Delta VFD-EL programming help

I have a Delta VFD-EL that I'm attempting to modify parameter 02.03 (PWM Carrier Frequency) in an attempt to get the motor that's attached to it to quit 'singing' at low speeds.

The motor is attached to a small blower cage with very little resistance, so I'm not overly concerned about overloading the motor or the vfd.

The VFD is connected via ModBus to a PLC and the PLC controls run/stop as well as the frequency output.

When I change the setting on the front panel of the VFD it correctly says 'End', but the setting doesn't take.

Is there something special I need to do to program the setting and then re-enable modbus control?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Danfoss Mct 10 COM issues with older firmware version VLT's

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've run into a frustrating communication quirk with Danfoss VLT drives using older firmware versions (specifically v01.25) and am wondering if anyone has found a reliable workaround.

The Situation:

  • Modern Firmware (v06.65+): Connects with no issues whatsoever using either a standard USB cable or an RS-485 serial converter via MCT 10.
  • Older Firmware (v01.25): Fails to connect completely using both USB and RS-485 methods. (I'm aware that the issues is parameter 16-91 does not exist in older versions.)

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • Created custom drive profiles matching exact voltage, kW, firmware and PUD files in MCT 10, but behavior remains unchanged.
  • Verified physical wiring and adapter functionality
  • Has anyone encountered this specific protocol handshake failure with vintage VLT firmware builds in MCT 10?

Any insights or field tips would be greatly appreciated!

Questions about working with an Integrator

Hello everyone. Some background info, I am our only controls/electrical engineer at our plant, and I've been pretty much thrown to the wolves, so I am trying to figure every single thing by myself.

I am currently working with an outside integrator who will be making some modifications to one of our PLC programs.

My question is: Do you typically send the integrator the whole PLC program/project, or do you provide only the specific sections/routines that need to be modified and then integrate their changes back into the main program yourself?

This may be a really silly question, but I am relatively new to this, so I am not too familiar with how things are done. I don't think our company has any policies regarding sharing this information, id rather be safe than sorry by sharing more than i needed to.

CODESYS Newb

Hey all, I’ve been at a systems integrator and worked on various different PLCs for 5 years now. Used a bunch of older Unitronics hardware, tons of different Rockwell PLCs. And one thing I really learned to like was AOIs and how they call an instance.

Can someone help me understand how this works in CODESYS? I like the idea of CODESYS and I’m playing with a WAGO CC100 currently. I’ve made a function block to scale my analog raw to my EU and to mA. As well as having HH, H, L, and LL alarms/sp/delays/deadbands… etc. But calling it felt clunky today.

Wondering if anyone else has made a similar move and felt a similar way. Been using a combo of YouTube and AI to help learn the CODESYS IDE/nomenclature.

Any advice is appreciated. Cheers
