Weekly Book Valuation Thread - w/c October 05, 2026

Welcome to the r/OldBooks Weekly Book Valuation Thread!

This is the place to ask how much an antique or vintage book (printed pre-1970) might be worth. Posts about book values will be redirected here.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Clear photos of the book (cover, back, spine, title page, any damage) will get you the best answers. Give as much detail on condition as you can!
  • Everyone is free to comment here, and answers may not be from experts. For expert advice, contact an auction house with experience in vintage or antiquarian books.
  • Book values are highly subjective. What one person might pay for a book, another may not.
  • We don't allow buying or selling anywhere on the sub, including here.

A new Book Valuation Thread will be posted every Monday at 6pm UK time.

Please don't ask for help finding books or remembering book titles.

Hi all,

Just a reminder that this isn't the right place to ask for help finding or remembering a book. We remove a fair few of these posts so we've made a specific rule to make it clearer that these posts don't belong here.

If you need help remembering a book title, try r/whatisthatbook or r/findabook.

Has anyone seen a complete five-volume set of the Gustave Doré Illustrated Bible like this one?

I’ve seen many folio Doré volumes over my 26 years of collecting books, but I’ve never seen bindings like these. Each volume measures 15 × 12 inches and is bound in full red Morocco leather, with marbled endpapers and gilt edges. The set weighs about 45 pounds.

The text blocks are nice and tight. The pages have light tanning but no foxing, and there’s minimal shelf wear. The bindings are simply stunning—I couldn’t resist acquiring the set!

I’ve been researching it and looking for comparable examples, but so far I haven’t found anything similar. I’ve included a photo of the title page from one of the volumes.

There’s no publication date, which was common for Cassell, Petter & Galpin Doré Bibles from this era.

I’d be grateful for any information. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Galaxy science fiction, July 1958. I love all the weird little adverts in these periodicals, especially the ones that look like pseudo-science

I picked this up from my recent visit to Boston. I got this from Brattle Book Shop and had a wonderful time inside. I'm overjoyed because I'm a big fan of Frost, but I have no clue if I overpaid or not.

Hopefully authentic manuscript fragment

Hello all,

This is a fragment of an old manuscript that was recovered from the binding of a 17th century book. I am curious about the calligraphy, hoping it might give clues as to time/place of origin

decades old books

so i went to my university's book fair today, and they had a bunch of used books, some from a few decades ago some like 100 or maybe more yrs old.

do germs and viruses and diseases from those period stay on those books? how dirty should I consider them? I touched them, probably breathed in particles i think, and even bought one from the 80s (i think).

idk am i overthinking it? do I just treat them like any other books? what about the one I bought, how do I treat it? are the objects that it touched dirty? or what about the books around it that it was touching at the book fair that are probably older?

Today I held a “Noble Fragment”, Mark 3-5 from the Gutenberg Bible c. 1450-1455. It has a galloping antelope watermark added by placing a metal shape on the screen when making the paper.

Just found a book in my collection and wanted to share, that is all. I received it in this condition, it is missing pages 49-64. Not of the religious sort but I think it’s cool

This book had no publication date, in the book or on Google. I’ve narrowed it down to 1946-47 (ignoring a mention of Danzig). This has been the most fun I’ve had trying to date a book but if anyone has tips on how to do it I’d love to learn.

Hello all! I recently aquired this imo super cool ass book, I have almost 0 info about it. I THINK it's a first edition? There is also a patch job on the spine. Is this like historical or rare would this be better suited in a museum or with a collector? I think it's EXTREMELY cool however if someone would appreciate it more or if it belongs in a museum I think it should go there.
Any info welcome!
Thank you!!

Published by J.B. Lippincott Company. I included some of the pages for artificial respiration. Amazing that securing the tongue with a hatpin, clean wire or knitting needle through the tongue was even an option.
