The bass isn’t coming through in my phone, and it sounds horrible lol.

The bass is coming through on my phone and it still sounds horrible

That looks like the ed Sullivan theater? The musical number at the end of Letterman sounded bad every night. I must assume the audio balance was set for the in person audience's enjoyment.

u/Elachtoniket 5h ago
I’m 99% sure this is from the late late show with Craig Ferguson, not Letterman

u/Gavinator10000 6h ago
The synth or whatever the hell you wanna call that isn’t nearly so obnoxious in the actual song lol
7
u/gonzogonzobongo 6h ago
It sounds pretty good to me. I like how they remixed the original, using the instruments like percussion. It’s got a nice beat and though the character of the sounds is different, I wouldn’t say it’s bad.

u/Imwhatswrongwithyou 6h ago
Sounds like a car alarm that’s been going off long enough to drain the battery
12
u/Vegan-Daddio 4h ago
The synth is mixed way too high. Even in headphones where the bass is coming through, it's just a really bad mix entirely

I had the sound muted by default I just thought "Man, I miss Craig Ferguson on late night."

That keyboardist is like, “hey watch me just fuck this song up real bad. God I’m so high right now.”

u/porygon_sucks 5h ago
Lol "that keyboardist" and its the main singer

Random fact: although they just separated just this year, he's married to Emmy winner Julia Garner, who famously played Ruth in the Netflix show Ozark.

u/behv 4h ago
I mean it's just a bad mix tbh
It's present in the song as well but WAAAAY lower studio version. Should not be lead levels, it's a background texture thing while the bass riff is the driving force
17
u/PM_YOUR_SMALLBOOBIES 3h ago
Yeah, it's definitely the mixer who learned that it's the singer on the keys and, therefore, determined that his instrument also needed gain dialed to 10.

u/CptTurnersOpticNerve 2h ago edited 2h ago
literally every YouTube comment on this song is specifically about how good this mix is on this performance, that's it's better than the album.

The keyboardist is the lead singer and the main songwriter of the band, especially during Torches when Pumped Up Kicks released. It's a bad mix. Listen to the song and you'll hear the same sounds.

I started watching this video before reading anything else and I genuinely thought the keyboardist was Bo Burnham. So I'd say I agree.

u/denotemulot 2h ago
I'm so confused. Are any of these people Bo Burnham?
Why do they all look identical?
1
u/Educational_Ant_184 1h ago
I read everything, and nothing stated that this wasnt Bo Burnham in a band covering the song, so I tried to figure out which was him. I was sure it was the keyboardist initially, then I tried to figure out if this was a bit where he played all the instruments and superimposed the video. It was at 20 seconds and the leftmost guy comes in where I figured out I was working under a faulty premise

What happened to Bo?

u/Mental_Table_9265 4h ago
He’s been dating Phoebe Bridgers for a few years now and helped write/produce like half of her new album, and he’s directed several comedy specials for other comedians. I think he’ll resurface in another special one day, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he completely stopped performing and focused on a directing/producing career.

Is that the version they played on the Craig Ferguson show?
I still listen to that time to time. I like it better than the studio version.

This is the full performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siIep9LHtNM&list=PLc17ie2H6-2ai10ZCME7MXFu4vYgue69Z&index=82
Definitely my favorite version of this song.

u/---reddit_account--- 4h ago
There are multiple lines in the lyrics where it turns out I never knew what he was saying because I can make them out clearly in this version

u/AI_moderated_failure 4h ago
The posted clip does it a disservice by effectively only showing the keyboard intro.
It's still pretty funny though.

u/Vegan-Daddio 3h ago
The keyboard is still way too loud

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb 37m ago
Yeah is it just me or are the levels set wrong? I had to turn up the volume for it to sound like the song again.

So many comments shitting on it for “whatever” reason. Many of the best versions of songs were from these live or just pre-studio recordings.

Yeah - that keyboard player really wasn't doing the song any favors. Is that how the original is? That just seemed so unnecessary.

The first bassline I wrote for my current band was one I was really proud of. It was a moody, slightly psychedelic rock ballad. I tried to make it as Paul McCartney as possible. Absolutely loved it.
I realised a few months ago that sped up and shifted up a tone, it was basically the bassline for Pumped Up Kicks. Thankfully we don't play that song any more.

Even outside the mems, Pumped up Kicks is an amazing song.

I thought they were all Bo Burnham. Because don't you see, Bo Burnham isn't just some guy. He's all of us. He's you. He's me. He's that little girl with pigtales playing hopscotch on sidewalk. He's the unhoused man asking to get enough money for a bus ride to a new life. And my god I'm high. Not as high as the key boardist but I'm getting there. Fuck. I hope that Chinese food I ordered gets here soon.

He’s one of the funniest musical comedians of all time and a legitimately good songwriter. Early stuff from the late 2000s early 2010s is a little dated, I mean he was a kid, but his wordplay was always really good.
His best work is the special Inside. He made it all himself during covid and it’s a crazy snapshot of what it was like to be alive then. His non-comedy song That Funny Feeling is amazing. Pheobe Bridgers does a wonderful cover of it.
Oh and he wrote and directed Eighth Grade.
