Dude raked for the Cubs, too. 144 OPS+ and 0.9 bWAR in just 30 games. Wonder if he's turned the corner as a hitter or if it was just small sample size. In 54 games/137 PAs after he came back from injury, between the Mets and the Cubs, he slashed .352/.409/.648/1.056. Would like to see the Mets bring him back as a 4th OF if possible.

His savant page suggests it’s just a career year but the fielding and speed are still there so I would be completely open to a reunion if he were up to it.

Can't remember the creator, but there was youtuber not too long ago that did a project about the most ATHLETIC players in baseball. Not the best, just most athletic; max exit velo, sprint speed, ground covered on defense, arm strength, etc. TT graded out top ten, maybe top five. Dude has ALL the tools.
14
u/djn24 3d ago
The big problem for the Mets and Taylor is that he probably wouldn't be an everyday player.
Maybe the Mets want Soto to be a DH more often than not next year and have an opening for Taylor? That's the only way I see that reunion making sense after Taylor made it clear this year that he can play regularly.

Sure, a competitive team won't see him as a top choice for being an everyday player, but why wouldn't he look for and find an offer to play every day?
Just because he has been used in a different role in the past doesn't mean he can't find that opportunity.
There are relief pitchers every year that find an opportunity in free agency to convert to being a starter.
2
u/ReleaseTheBlacken I’ve jizzed more hits than much of the lineup.. 3d ago
Exactly. The Os took Luis Robert on a waiver claim. TT is much better and costs less!
1
u/djn24 3d ago
Both will find every day opportunities this winter. They can take them and use it as an opportunity to showcase for a competitor at the deadline.
Or they could accept a smaller role with a really good team and just bet that it will work out.
They are good enough players that somebody will entertain the opportunity.
6
u/MrDNL 3d ago
Alvarez is going to be the primary DH and backup catcher next year. The Mets are going to use Alvy's starts behind the plate as an opportunity to give Soto some time at DH, with others getting some playing time mixed in as well. So, effectively, what we need is a 4th OF who won't expect to play much.
I'm skeptical that Morabito is good enough, and you always want some depth anyway, so I expect the team will sign someone. But I don't think Taylor will want the job.
2
u/CrosbyBird 3d ago
Morabito is a good 5th OF, but I wouldn't be confident with him as a 4th OF.
3
u/MrDNL 3d ago
I agree but the gap between those roles is hard to fill appropriately. You don't want Morabito to be an every day player if one of the three starters goes down -- that's his biggest issue -- but he's more than capable of being a once a week guy.
1
u/CrosbyBird 3d ago
Exactly how I feel, at least now. It's possible Morabito ends up one day being a decent 4th OF or better; he was only 23 years old. For perspective, Tyrone Taylor's first season in the majors was his age-25 season, and his first season with even 50 PA was age-27.
Morabito also was significantly better in AAA at age 23 than Taylor was in AA at 23. So it's not just wishcasting to project him as a 4th OF eventually. Just a big risk to rely on that production in 2027.
2
u/ReleaseTheBlacken I’ve jizzed more hits than much of the lineup.. 3d ago
Yeah, he’s basically another Janikowski- great speedster and defender, but not likely to see 300+ PAs.
3
u/djn24 3d ago
Yea, I'm fine with making Soto/Álvarez the DH guys. When Álvarez catches, Soto DH's and a defense-first outfielder plays in left.
I don't see why Taylor would go back to that type of role after this season. He can make a lot more money and play more with a different team.
1
u/ReleaseTheBlacken I’ve jizzed more hits than much of the lineup.. 3d ago
Absolutely, and this is the stage of his career to get his best payday.

Yes, Morabito has a better glove in CF, driven primarily by his higher sprint speed. Taylor is 92nd percentile in sprint speed; Morabito is 97th percentile. For additional color, Morabito is faster than AJ Ewing. Much better than you think. You're also overrating Taylor with your GG thoughts.

u/outcasthawk 3d ago
He’s a 4th outfielder who can play center field with a weak bat that occasionally gets hot. He’s also a RHH when the entire outfield bats lefty. He is a great fit for this roster, though I’m sure there are other options too.
12
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 3d ago
to me at least, living in the timeline in which Tyrone Taylor can swing a league-average bat and Juan Soto no longer appears to be mostly injury-proof, a 4th outfielder makes a lot of sense.
The long-term plan for Soto is obviously to full-time DH anyway, let's just accelerate that timeline
2
u/baylixir WILDCARD BITCHES 3d ago
Juan Soto doesn’t want to accelerate that timeline so this is a moot point.

Soto DH, Tyrone/AJ in either left or center, and Benge in right. If one needs a day off, Soto or Baty can move to LF. That sounds really really good to me

Jefferson Rojas is the real deal, but you can't fault the Cubs for being aggressive, that approach paid off in 2016 when they traded Gleyber Torres for Ardolis Chapman to the Yankees. I can see Rojas fitting in nicely at 3rd next season and I hope they make a real effort to bring back Holmes.

The "got 'em" vibe around coverage for this is a little funky, right? TT put up an .890 OPS for the Cubs across 30 games, Clay Holmes was not as good as he was here but was by no means crashing and burning. the NL wild card was competitive almost all the way down the stretch
their october run ended fast but getting TT and Clay at the trade deadline was obviously a good decision for the cubs
25
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 3d ago
also, I knew TT was playing well but I did not know he was .890 OPS good
bring our prodigal son home
6
u/rosen380 3d ago
The .096 OPS difference amounts to something like 4 extra singles in 30 games.
3
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 3d ago
- in 2025 TT's OPS was .598, so I'm pleased to see that his good 2026 continued as he added 82 PA to his existing 152 PA for the Mets as opposed to being a hot streak
- what do we all live under the base hit tree where base hits just turn up whenever you want one? are we diving off a cartoon diving board into a giant bank vault full of base hits? if i were a major league player and the base-hit warlock appeared to me in the dead of night and said "you can have 4 more base hits in the next 30 games but you have to sacrifice a live chicken to babipzelbub" my ass would be on line at the chicken store the next morning
3
u/rosen380 3d ago
It was only meant to add context. A lot of people would see a .960 OPS and figure it as "beast mode enabled" and not "a few extra singles over what he was doing as a Met"
3
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 3d ago
i was mostly just riffing a long joke about a baseball demon called babipzelbub
4
u/mytoemytoe 3d ago
I think people are just desperately hoping that in three years they can look back and view this trade in the same context as the PCA trade (the Mets didn't make the playoffs with Javier Baez which makes this a tough comparison). It's nice to dream though, Rojas' blazing hot September certainly helped in that regard.

I don't think you can say the Cubs followed bad process here, but this is the downside to going all in: if you don't win it all, it really hurts. A lot of people look back at past Mets years and wish we bought more aggressively (especially now that we know that what the baby Mets grew up to be), but it's not so black and white.
6
u/PV2717 Mr. Met 3d ago
This is what happened with PCA. The Mets went for it. “It” didn’t materialize. And now we have to watch our draft pick flourish with another org.
Will Rojas be the universe balancing itself out? Only time will tell.
3
u/NYerInTex New York Mets 3d ago
Huge difference - PCA was an injured player that was not our top overall prospect.
People act like they knew. The same ones who say we should have traded some of the baby Mets because see what happened when PCA was far from any of their peak value when he was traded away
1
u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 3d ago
I swear half the hype about PCA was that he had an easy nickname. Kind of like how into Xavier Nady people were.
Of course, turns out PCA is amazing.
0
u/Aggressive-Mix4971 Bob Murphy and The Happy Recaps 3d ago
I'll stand by believing, even at the time, that the trade was bad process. The Mets in '21 had a clear shot at a crappy NL East, sure, but they made the deal just as deGrom went down for the year, which along with other pitching injuries meant they just weren't going to be contenders. Baez ended up being productive for them, but it was a mediocre team that was falling apart the more hurt it got.
Now, did I have any clue PCA would be this? Of course not, this is beyond 99th percentile outcome for him. But his profile did at least read like a guy who could reliably be a 4-5 WAR centerfielder, and those don't grow on trees.
But it's all in the past now, and hopefully Ewing takes his next step forward.

Can't hate, PCA for Baez and the Mets didn't even make it to the playoffs.
Maybe using Bregman with 1 eye wasn't ideal though... but in a similar situation I feel like I would prefer having a slightly injured Bichette (who is worse) DH over Tyrone Taylor as well.
I don't think Clay Holmes was going to save them by pitching negative runs, 1 run for the best offense in baseball is total shit.

2
u/HungrymanH Jeff McNeil 3d ago
okay but what if that division winner had a 500 record and a -32 run differential
1
u/joesaysso 3d ago
The whole season is made up of a schedule the is mostly compromised of 3-game serieseses. The lesser team wins these series frequently enough to say that winning a 3 game series doesn't weed out the better team.
I understand that there has to be a cutoff and upsets will happen under any circumstances, but a playoff series should not be equivalent to a regular season series. The wildcard series should be best of 5.
1
u/Skexy Polar Bear 3d ago
yeah....only one series even going to a third game kinda sucks. there are too many teams in the playoffs, a short one sided series really doesn't make for a great viewing experience.
1
u/joesaysso 3d ago
Agreed, especially when some of the games are during the weekday when everybody is at work and school.
Also agree on the too many teams. Was it Anthony Rendon who got shit on a couple years ago for saying the season is too long? Who got dogged on for being a player who said it and it sounds lazy to some people, but he was 100% right.
The point of the long season is to properly filter out the pretenders from the contenders so only the best teams go to the playoffs. But if you keep expanding the playoffs, now you're just letting in too many teams and the season being that long only serves to wear down teams and waters down the playoffs.
3 division champs, 1 wild card. That's what the playoffs should be. There's enough room on the schedule to make all of the playoff series best of 7. They can shorten the regular season by 6 games, eliminating one home and away series from each team's schedule and it all works fine.

We should never have been trading for Javier Baez in the first place. Id rather have PCA on my roster, tiny sample size notwithstanding
3
u/Alternative-Kick-849 3d ago
It was a gamble. That’s what happens with trades, you’re not gonna hit every time.
Looking back, I’m sure people were initially excited for Baez, until he actually performed (or didn’t) it was a risk.
Trades are not always gonna be equally yolked. Gotta give up something to get something. With the OF the Mets have now, can’t really sweat that loss much. It’s the rest of the roster that needs to pan out now. OF will be the least of our problems in the future
1
u/DinosoarJunior 3d ago
Javy Baez was a streaky, unreliable hitter his whole career at that point. It was a trade by a fill in GM who didnt know jack crap about what he was doing and cared about nothing but winning that season. Bad scouting, bad short sighted only decision making. Those facts make this different.
3
u/mormagils 3d ago
I mean, Baez did perform well for us. He was having a good season and he played exactly like he hoped.
PCA, when we traded him, was not the prospect he turned out to be. He was regarded pretty similarly to Ewing at the start of this season--a good prospect, but not a blue chipper you hoard. And considering he was injured as well, it made sense that of all the guys in the discussion, he was the one the Mets were most willing to part with. PCA only became the blue chipper he was after he went to the Cubs, did a swing change, and found a power stroke that hadn't been there before.
3
u/LaMystika 3d ago
Given that the Mets gave the Cubs PCA for like two months of Javy Baez flipping us off, I’d say we’re finally even

The Cubs also refused to start David Peterson, who after two rough starts following the trade was actually very good for them with a 2.66 ERA since July 9. He pitched well in relief yesterday, but the Cubs not considering him one of the two best starters they had to use this series despite the sorry state of their rotation was baffling.
The Mets got Cole Mathis out of the trade who has a pretty high bust risk (bad hit tool) and didn't look good coming off of being injured when we traded for him, but does have some upside potential.
