Sounds like he's gone from Boston, would love to see him in DC, but that would involve spending money, which is a pipe dream I know.

A guy like him is looking for a ring, or money. Nats don't give him a great shot at a ring, so he'd probably want like a 4-5 year deal from them, and personally I'm not betting on him (or most any starter) to be effective when he's 40+.

He isn’t going to command a large deal or a long deal. He’s exactly the type of veteran pitching presence and bridge signing that this team needs.

He’s 37

And he’s going to get a 2-3 year deal for like 30-40MM total. That’s not a crazy add for this team’s position. Did y’all forget that we needed pitching (overall, not just a bullpen) and that if we’d had it we’d have been on the cusp?

15ish mil for a few years is not going to get in the way of anything.

Sox fan here who just saw this. He has a 30 mil mutual option for just next year alone. He is gunna get atleast 25-30 AAV

I’m not convinced. Current option year (which is a mutual option, and it kinda seems like that relationship is dead) is only relevant to his previous contract not his next one.

top comment from the post;

Sonny Gray 3rd time through the order stats against: .180/.235/.280 for a .515 OPS

that's good right?

So you want him? Note: I was done with Gray back when his career ended in 2018. So maybe Im biased

Career ended in 2018? What are you talking about? He's been one of the most under-the-radar pitchers over the last few seasons.

For what it's worth, he was coming off 3 awful seasons. He signed a show-me contract worth 30 million over 3 years... 30. Over 3. 7.5m Base salary. With a 500 THOUSAND dollar signing bonus. 500K. Process that real quick. He was a ZERO-risk contract. He just so happened to do what essentially nobody ever does; he had a second life as a pitcher after 30.

Numerous pitchers are signing pillow deals. Snell, Flaherty, and Framber Valdez come to mind.

The 2018 Yankees were a bit behind the curve philosophically that didn't work with Sonny Gray. The Yankees hired Matt Blake in 2019 and as we see, they are very tough to beat.

Since 2018, he has pitched to a 3.40 ERA to 3.34 FIP. So the idea that he fell off the face of the earth is rather stupid. Twins and Cardinals were not competitive and you didn't watch him much.

They pulled him before the umps could toss him for insane amounts of sticky stuff on his neck.

I kept seeing it on his neck on tv and thought no way I’m the only one seeing this. It’s so blatantly obvious. Then I watched a video on YouTube about it and was like I knew it. He said exactly what you did, so he wouldn’t get caught by the umps. Crazy man.

He shit the bed in New York again

It makes no sense.

Gray's first playoff game was in 2013 as an Oakland Athletic against Jason Verlander and Max Scherzer for Detroit. Bartolo Colon started game one and Sean Doolittle who was in his 2nd year, came in for relief. That's how long he has been in the league. He is 37 looking for a one year deal on a team looking to win next year. The Nationals are not one year away from a sure fire postseason team. There is nothing long term that they get out of him.

If the scouting team thinks they can figure out Casey Mize who will be 30, I think they should offer something whether it is a 5 year or 2-3 year pillow deal because he's an injury risk. Nationals will be bidding against other teams so it's not certain but a deal like that plays into something. This team is not going on a world series run next year. 3-5 years with a younger player 29 to 31 years old with the right stuff time to figure the rest out.

I think some of you are going to be surprised at the money that gets spent now that some of the super contracts are coming off the books…

1

u/Lanky-Huckleberry-50 2d ago

Really depends on the terms. Really would not want to go over two years with him.

1

u/meanie_ants 2d ago

That’s probably about what he’ll get. 2 or 3 years, or 2 plus a vesting option or something.

1

u/JBSully82 11 - Zimmerman 2d ago

He would be 37 upon signing. What are you smoking?

u/colglover 2d ago

They want a Strasburg redux

1

u/JBSully82 11 - Zimmerman 2d ago

Strassy was much younger...

So you think Gray will go unsigned or just that you don't want him to be a National? This 36-year-old had a higher WAR than all of our pitchers...

1

u/JBSully82 11 - Zimmerman 2d ago

Just a National. He'll still get paid more than our owners feel comfortable shelling out.

Yeah the age gives me second thoughts, probably should've looked that up before posting. I knew he was over 30 but didn't realize he was on the better end of 40.
