Aaron Boone on Austin Wells' baserunning mistake

u/MattO2000 1d ago
He’s right, it was a bad play but to hyperfocus on it when the entire offense was shit is kinda dumb

How is it dumb to focus at least a little on it? The Rays scored one run all game, it's not like they were running it up and we had no hope. Sometimes games are tight like that and you have to play smart ball to have any chance. And let's not act like this was some minor error...this is about as bad a baserunning error as you can get, and so yeah, it gets magnified in a game like this. There's a reason "never make the first or third out at third base" is one of the oldest pieces of baserunning advice there is.

Because Wells has been on of your best postseason hitters and it doesn't make sense for Boone to publicly bash him to the media to make the fans sitting at home feel better. Wells knows he fucked up and I'm sure boo e will say something to him privately

u/trendygamer 1d ago
I don't need Boone to say more than he did. But this is just about us talking about it here. I don't think we're being too harsh to say this was an exceptionally dumb, potentially gamechanging error. Wells knows damn well he's got some of the slowest hooves on the team and shouldn't be extending as is. He has no business doing that, there was literally nothing to be gained by being on third when there was two outs.

Ya it was an overaggressive bad play. I'm sure wells knows that and I'm sure Boone either has told him that already or will when they talk about it

u/Ambiguously_Ironic 1d ago
What more do you want him to say? He admitted it was a mistake, but anything more and he’s just being a dick in the media to one of his players which isn’t gonna help anything.

That’s kinda what the sad side of the fan base demands. The whole “accountability” thing from people have never even touched a baseball
3
u/werther595 1d ago
Wells was accountable. He said he misread it and made a mistake. Boone said it was a mistake. I think Wells knows it was a mistake. Should Wells be benched tomorrow? That hurts the team with no benefit.

u/cornPopwasabaddude13 18h ago
Why would you bench him? It wasn’t like it was a lazy play it was a base running mistake. They happen all the time this whole accountability thing is a ridiculous need only demanded by fans

anything more it would have been like listening to Kamala Harris trying to explain to Joe Biden how to dip his saltines in his chicken broth.

What the heck do you mean? It was the first hit and if he didn’t get called out the momentum might have shifted to us.

What's the point of having a 3rd base coach if you aren't even going to look at him

u/HanshinFan 1d ago
To be fair I would also completely ignore Rojas at this point if I was a Yankee so I kinda get it

u/FiveDinero 1d ago
Playoff baseball you need your team to play smart, disciplined, clean baseball. Getting shutdown by one of the games best pitchers will happen sometimes. But making stupid outs by making the last out at 3rd is inexcusable and deserves all the focus. He can try to make whatever dumb excuses he wants for it. What more do you expect from Boone

Bad decision by Wells, of course, horrible, but he was the only one to get a hit all night

You act like you never make mistakes at work

This is not the equivalent of making a steak MR instead of R at Ruth Chris Steakhouse! This is also from a guy who hit 180 for entire MLB season.

u/cubs1917 15h ago
Well I wasn't comparing it to the high pressured job of a head chef at a major restaurant but I do believe there are jobs out there that if you make a mistake it does have consequences
2
u/Feeling-Pay-3269 14h ago
He just needed to own it not try to explain why he thought it was right. Baseball is already filled with so many failures built into the game and you cant add to that especially in the postseason.

The offense wasnt hitting for shit anyway so there was no way Wells was going home.
3
u/_Al_Gore_Rhythm_ 1d ago
Let's be honest. Those guys behind him weren't driving him in anyway.

u/oldveteranknees 22h ago
This is where I’m at, there were two outs and it was their first hit of the game. We’ve seen these Yankees before.
3
u/magikarp-sushi 1d ago
Even if he was at second no guarantee shit happens either so yeah Boone is correct.

I did not listen to the comments, but anything other than him saying that Wells has to be smarter, there is just wrong.

u/RussianPravda 1d ago
Rasmussen had their number tonight. Wells obviously should not have went there but the whole team lost that game

The third base coach had the stop sign up before Wells even touched 2nd base...sorry Wells, you're an idiot!

It would have given us an at bat with a RISP on a guy that just gave up his first hit in a playoff game. It was a Huge mistake

u/Kashmir79 16h ago
Yup you can pinch run for wells, pinch hit for McMahon (Stanton, Goldy, Volpe, Ramos). Maybe TB goes to Baker for a four-out save. Garcia gets an AB in the 9th. Odds were still against them but in a game like that you have to be precious about the one and only opportunity you had all game to make something happen and it’s totally inexcusable to blow it with a little league running mistake.

"doesn't matter and I won't even bring it up to him"

u/Cracka_Chooch 1d ago
That's not at all what he said. He literally acknowledged it was a mistake by Wells.

Wonder if judge is gonna do a 4th day in a row of batting practice tomorrow

u/Shujolnyc 1d ago
Missing the point - why are we relying on Austin Wells for anything????? 1 hit???? 1????

u/JusSayING_Mi 1d ago
Scream Boone fuck let your emotions show let us know why you couldn’t put up one run. I have no bets check there might be other with my past name but I didn’t bet shyt on the whole team 1-0 man baseball is sad like wth.

There is absolutely zero room for error for the rest of the series from anyone. Rasmussen WILL win his next start and at this point that is a simple fact of the matchup.
Schlittler has to shove game 2. Rodon/Fried has to shove game 3. Game 4 is an automatic Rasmussen win and does not matter. Whoever starts game 5 has to shove. Offense has to score runs fast and often. No defensive or baserunning blunders.
Absolutely every single player on this roster has to play perfect baseball for the next week save for game 4. Anything less will result in an elimination at the hands of Rasmussen in game 4 or someone else in game 3 or 5.
Are they up for it?

He is just crying because we lost a tough game and making false claims, every other Yankee “fan” is doing that right now

u/obvioussponge06 1d ago
Well, that’s how it is when the other team has an automatic win when they start a certain pitcher against your team. How do you think Boston feels about Schlittler?

u/Delicious_Alfalfa138 1d ago
“Rasmussen WILL win his next start” dumb ahh saying anything is for certain in baseball, get outa here
Im up for you not making these silly posts any more thats for sure

The only STUPIDER(yea i get it) or more blindly arrogant person than Austin Wells is Dave Sims. JFC. The Yankees are dogshit.

u/Andjoo 1d ago
At least he didn't say "I thought he had a chance to make it". It was an extremely horrible decision by Wells to make that move.
