Ngl I don’t see the point in kicking him while he’s down. Played under a shit development coach who ruined his confidence and any chance he had of being a rotational player. I can’t think of anything he did wrong during his time here except just… not being good at basketball

That’s really a CRAZY way to finish that post 🤣 he showed good signs early on. He just never made any progress after his rookie year and didnt take advantage of the opportunities he was given.
I do agree about not kicking him when he’s down — but cmon man. He was blessed to stay in the NBA as long as he did. It’s a joke. It’s not THAT serious.

He was a one-trick movement shooter that didn't show shooting at an elite enough level to justify an NBA spot.
He was a big swing as a draft pick, but him making it and sticking would have been an upset. He's a bust 8.5 time out of 10.
This isn't shade. He's an incredible basketball player in context- top 1% in the world for sure. It's just the NBA is filled with the top 0.5%(probably a smaller number here, but you get my point) and he's just not that and was likely never gonna be that.

Yeah not good at basketball is pretty big when ur job is to be good at basketball

Has he considered (and this is a bold approach) getting good at basketball?

right but the point is kicking somebody when they're down is sad, needlessly cruel behavior
especially when its somebody who played for us and didn't burn any bridges or act up

u/ER1CNOIR 1d ago
Needlessly cruel? Cmon bro it ain’t that serious. What did he do for us except waste a draft pick and a roster spot, huh?

I think they mean as a decent human to another decent human. Like yea, it's not that big a deal to you because you just some random dude on reddit. For a lot of these dudes, they've committed their whole life to being good at this one thing. Imagine how shitty it feels to know you're not cutting it after the years of dedication? Probably already super depressed, confidence has already been shot. Now you got a bunch of randos ready to rub it in your face about how not good you are when you're already rock bottom.

I still feel like we ruined him.

I wouldn't put it past us for doing that, but I'll also point out that he was a "shooter" who couldn't shoot. He had every opportunity to prove otherwise

u/BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy DERIK QUEEN 2d ago
He was shooting his ass of his rookie year, no?
22
u/Manchu504 Trigga Trey 2d ago
Yeah, he shot 36% from 3 and 38% from the floor his rookie year, both career bests. Nothing amazing, but promising for a rookie. Just could never grow into a consistent threat. He really needed to be a knockdown shooter to make up for his massive defensive liabilities.

If I can gently push back, while that's a great rookie campaign for him, he'd have to have made a big leap to stick.
If he stayed around that he's still not worth an NBA slot. Movement shooting was all he offered so he needed to be truly elite at it, and we never saw signs that he'd get there.

u/ER1CNOIR 1d ago
Yes, he showed pretty good signs early on, during his rookie year. And he never progressed any further. After his rookie season I was actually pretty high on him. Then when he was supposed to make his biggest jump in year two after showing good signs his rookie year… he did nothing at all.

Disagree, he never improved at any aspect of basketball. We have had several undrafted/2nd round guys showing improvement across their game.
Hawkins had minutes and had opportunity that most NBA propects dream about getting.
If you've ever had any lower back pain, you know that it affects the way you walk, the way you sit in a chair etc. now imagine how it would affect your shooting form, where even the smallest adjustment will be the difference between make and miss. Its probably incredibly difficult to deal with.

I’m not an expert, but dude just looked lost on the court sometimes. He’d be coming back on transition and would just be kind of looking around like he was trying to find his friends at the mall.

u/tree_pose 2d ago
man I get that we're down bad as a franchise but sometimes a bust is just a bust. he's 24 and he got plenty of run with opportunities to show some stuff. no one ruined him. the truth is he never showed any ability to be above average at any one skill at an NBA level. fans got over attached to him in clinging for any semblance of hope and now they can't accept that he just didn't work out at a pro level. get a grip.

Pepperidge Farms remembers this sub endlessly complaining that he wasn’t getting enough minutes.

He should’ve never came back so soon after hurting his back. He hasn’t been right since. Hopefully, he can figure out.

I guess OP is unhappy with his own life so feels the need to kick Hawk while he’s down.
2
u/ER1CNOIR 1d ago
It’s not that serious. You think Hawk gonna read this BS? 🤣 most basketball fans won’t read this shit. Most Reddit users won’t even read this shit.

He would've had a place in the league if his 3 pointers are wet at least, cause he has so much to make up for lack of basketball iq and frame and can only really be played in 1 position. If he improves his shot immensely then there's always a need for that somewhere.
Not going to lie I was excited at times during his rookie year with his movement shooting and the thought of him further developing it
3
u/ER1CNOIR 1d ago
Yeah he just went backwards in his career. Maybe he got his own shit going on. Maybe he tired of basketball. Maybe he belongs in an overseas league. I think he should’ve been playing a lot more G League time.

And to think, I almost paid for a custom “Flockins” Pels jersey with his number. The last jersey I bought was a Larry nance jersey so can’t fool me twice!

Maybe one day he can work his way back into the league. He has to become an elite 3 point shooter to do so. He wasn’t a bad rebounding guard, but he wasn’t able to create shots for himself and was also a relatively poor defender.
