OCD fans

Any other fans out there with OCD? I have a different type than Monk, but I find it comforting to watch the show πŸ’–

I remember first watching Monk going 'I do that!' It made me feel seen and I absolutely loved it. Obviously any type of representation of things like OCD isn't going to be always accurate especially since OCD can be so different per person plus we can't hear his thoughts and a lot of my OCD is thought related. Its not perfect but I definitely appreciate it! Especially for a show from the early 2000s. I am happy we have better understanding now.Β

Yes! For an early 2000s show, it really handles/portrays OCD with sensitivity. I have contamination OCD and a few times on the show he does something where I'm like "Nope! He wouldn't do that!" I appreciate that the OCD isn't treated as a joke/punchline, and that there are moments where we can really see his struggle and frustration.

diagnosed at 5 years old. Almost 3 decades of pure shit. They nail some things straight on the head but I have a lot of criticism about that aspect of the series as well. Mainly the performative aspect of it and the lack of self awarness which is not the case for most of us and is actually one of the most interesting, painful traits of this mental illness that they could've explored if they'd done more research and were brave enough to shift the tone into a deeper account of OCD. Tony is always 100/10 though. My OCD is checking and intrusive thoughts. What's yours? You don't have to share I'm just curious.

Thought spirals and intrusive thoughts πŸ™ƒ finally got diagnosed last year at 39. And now targeted therapy is great!

The show received much more praise than criticism for this show from the mental health community. There's always a hater out there, but seeing a lead character with OCD leading a successful life was definitely a good thing.

Absolutely!! its almost watching it give validation for compulsiveness and watching it be put to use productively is so satisfying!! my ONLY issue is that it created a stereotype and a misunderstanding of what OCD looks like, and i know of a lot , a lot, of people who believe what they think if it doesnt look like Monk , then it isnt OCD but other than that, LOVE it!!

I go through periods of times where I have terrible obsessive thoughts for weeks to months.

I’m still struggling with the different packaging they used for the different Monk DVD seasons. First two seasons were fold-outs, then they started using mini-clamshells. I would love to know why they did that to us.

I bought the full box set special edition. It's great. Tons of commentary and behind the scenes too.

Since I was a child, my dad called me β€œMonk” and I always wondered why, because I’ve never seen the show. One day I finally watched it and was like: β€œah okay, I get it now…”
