FAQs for noobs. Read this before posting.
Q: What is mining?
A: To explain this in the simplest way possible, in monero, mining is using a computer to calculate something that verifies the next block to join the blockchain. This calculation is very difficult to do, so your computer rarely manages it. In fact, it's so difficult that your computer may never manage it at all. If it does ever manage it, you get the block reward which is in the range of $130 USD worth (as of May 2022 but this is based on the current exchange rate). Pool mining is when you join a group of others and split the reward when one of you manages to do this calculation correctly.
Q: How can I learn more about monero?
A: This is an excellent book (also available for free in pdf format).
Q: So can I quit my job now?
A: You're not going to get rich with mining monero. It only earns you a very small amount each day, if anything. I previously made $0.54 USD profit a day with running a Ryzen 7 3700X computer 24/7, but now I actually lose money from mining.
At the moment, in most areas you'll lose money from mining if you pay normal prices for electricity. You'll probably only make a profit if you have very cheap electricity or generate it yourself like with solar panels and a battery setup.
Q: I want to build a mining rig. Should I?
A: For anyone who pays for electricity, it's probably not worth buying any equipment to mine monero if you're aiming to make a profit. It gets more difficult over time, so the profits go down.
The only exception is if you have free energy that you can access for a long time. It would still take a few years to pay off a monero mining rig with free electricity, when you account for the increasing difficulty. But after that it's 100% profit. I made a full post explaining this topic in detail here. In my example in that post, it would take 2.5 years to pay off the computer with free electricity, assuming you can keep it mining 24/7/365.
Q: Can I get an ASIC for mining Monero?
A: No! It is specifically designed to be mined on CPUs only. This is so that mining remains decentralised. When ASICs start mining a cryptocurrency then it usually causes the creation of large mining farms controlled by few people. Monero is against that. Monero is mineable by the average person on their own desktop computer.
Monero has changed algorithms in the past to purposefully stop ASICs from being able to mine it. If an ASIC was ever made for monero again, the algorithm would probably be changed again to stop the ASIC from working.
Q: I can mine at 120 MH/s, so I should be able to make $50k per day of profit on monero according to a calculator I just used...right??? Please reply fast I'm about to sign a contract to buy a Lamborghini.
A: Hashrate is different for each coin. Your CPU or GPU getting 120 MH/s does not apply here. That's probably ethereum hashrate. The hashrate any CPU or GPU gets on monero is not influenced by or related to ethereum hashrate, bitcoin hashrate, litecoin hashrate, or any other coin. In fact, GPU mining of monero is very inefficient and not worthwhile. Forget about the hashrate you get on another coin.
Q: Can I mine with a GPU?
A: Short answer: No.
Long answer: Yes, it's possible to mine monero with a GPU, but it's generally a bad idea because the algorithm monero uses today is optimised only for CPUs. Mining monero on a GPU will be very inefficient and slow compared to a CPU, and will not be worth your time. Full explanation here.
Q: How much will I make mining monero/how do I know if my computer will be profitable/what hashrate will I get with my computer or CPU?
A: Follow this guide to calculate it. You need to know the specs of the computer you'll be mining on.
Q: How do I mine monero?
A: Follow this guide.
Q: Which mining pool should I use?
A: You can choose to use either a centralised pool which will do a lot of the work for you in setting things up, or you can use the decentralised P2pool. If you want to use a centralised pool, see here. If you want to use P2pool then the easiest way is using gupax which helps you to set it up.
Q: So I'm mining but my CPU is only showing 50% usage (or some other percentage less than 100). How do I get it to use 100%?
RandomX, the proof of work algorithm used by monero, needs 16 KiB of L1 cache, 256 KiB of L2 cache and 2 MiB of L3 cache per mining thread. Your CPU probably doesn't have enough cache to use all threads.
If your CPU doesn't have enough cache to run all threads then XMRig automatically selects the right number of threads that it can run with the cache available.
Q: I have access at work/university/school to 50 computers. How can I mine monero on them? I can't wait to get started, I'm gonna be so rich.
A: This is a terrible idea. The trouble you get in is going to cost you a lot more than you'll earn from doing this. You will likely be earning a couple of USD per day. The organisation that owns these computers and pays for the electricity will see this as stealing, which it is. You're stealing electricity. They'll also see it as you putting their entire network at risk. Expect to get in big trouble if you do this. Possibly to the extent of facing criminal charges. It's really not worth the risk for the miniscule profit you'll be making.
Q: If mining monero is not profitable, why would anyone want to do it?
A: There are other reasons why people decide to mine, too. Some people want to support monero because they like the idea of a private, completely fungible, decentralised cryptocurrency.
Other people who are highly concerned about privacy might mine as a way of obtaining monero without going through an exchange that has to find out their identity.
Some people just enjoy the technical side of setting up their computer to mine, tweaking the settings and getting it working as well as they can.
The profitability of monero mining is self balancing - as the total hashrate (the combined computing power of all miners) goes up, it becomes more difficult, which makes it less profitable. If the price of monero went down and people stopped mining it because they were not making enough, then the difficulty would drop, and it would become more profitable. Thanks to this, the profitability stays relatively stable now and hovers around the level of "just barely profitable if you have very cheap electricity".
Q: If I stop mining for the night/day/some hours will I lose all my progress and have to start again?
A: It doesn't work like that. With solo mining, you have a chance of finding the right hash for the current block with every single hash your computer calculates. If you don't find it then that work is of no use and there's nothing to "save".
With pool mining, you have to find a hash over a certain difficulty (the difficulty given by the pool). This is referred to as a share. The pool will save that result and pay you (when it finds a block) according to how much work your computer did for the pool. You don't lose any progress by stopping mining. You'll get paid for anything you earned while you were mining. The same applies to P2Pool.
Q: How else can I help monero?
A: Running a node is a great way to help monero. Running a node involves downloading and hosting the blockchain so other people can download it off you. You don't have to do this manually, there is software that does it all for you. You just have to provide a computer and internet connection. Some people even do it on a Raspberry Pi.
You can also help monero by using it as a currency. Monero has low transaction fees and confirms (1 block confirmation) in an average of just 1 minute. Who you send money to and how much you send can't be tracked, unlike most other cryptocurrencies.

Made a Monero + P2Pool + Tari all in one app, anyone wanna try it?
So I've been messing around with Monero, P2Pool and Tari merge-mining, and getting all of it running together was kind of a hassle. I wanted one place to just see what's going on, so I started building it for myself and it turned into an actual app.
It's called Triple X. It runs a Monero node and P2Pool (plus Tari merge-mining if you want it) and gives you a web dashboard with sync status, hashrate, workers, found blocks and logs. Payouts go straight to your own wallet, no fees. It's free and open source, and you can run it on Umbrel/5tratumOS.
Stuff you should know before you try it:
It's v1.2-RC2, so it's not battle-tested yet. That's the whole reason I'm posting. There's a wallet tab but it's totally optional, it's just there if you don't have a wallet yet. If you do, use your own address and ignore it. How long monerod takes to sync depends on your hardware, so I can't give you a number.
If you give it a shot, I'd love to hear how it went. Was the install confusing? Did anything break? Is something missing you'd want to see? Even "I got stuck here" is super helpful.

Ryzen 9 9950X: hoe haal ik meer Monero-hashrate? Nu 22,84 kH/s
Ik mijn Monero met XMRig op Ubuntu en zoek tips om meer hashrate uit mijn setup te halen:
Ryzen 9 9950X
ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi,
BIOS 3602
16 GB KLEVV DDR5 (2×8 GB),
EXPO 6000 CL30
Luchtkoeler met twee ventilatoren
Ik begon rond 21 kH/s. Dit hebben we aangepast/gecontroleerd:
Curve Optimizer: all-core −5.
Huge Pages 100%, MSR actief, 32 miningthreads.
1GB-pages ingeschakeld.
CPU-profiel op performance: nauwelijks verschil.
UCLK=MEMCLK: nauwelijks verschil.
Welke instellingen zouden jullie hierna testen? Ik zie 9950X-benchmarks rond 27–28 kH/s en ben benieuwd hoeveel daarvan haalbaar is met mijn geheugen en koeling.

made a monero webminer that's ~24% efficient, in browser light mode ~66.6 % vs native light mode (on Apple silicon)
Hi reddit, some time has gone by since my last post here ( https://www.reddit.com/r/MoneroMining/s/rlhQmzEXHG ), great progress has been made since, the performance is almost doubled both on ARM64 and AMD64 platforms. The most significant good news are the performance gains in scenarios that dont expose SharedArrayBuffer. The performance claim is not as hot when it comes to AMD64 (10% in full mode). You can test the performance out on a demo site thats linked in the repo and see for yourself :)

monero-gui mini
Hey, i have already figured out that the monero gui application apparently is not the efficient method of mining monero. however, i'd like to use it for now.
I am mining with around 3.5kH/s on the mini chain. i have not set any flag.
does the gui know that my wallet is the one in the application or do I need to set additional settings?
Do I have any information on how my node/chain is performing? Am I just one day have a fraction of an xmr in my account?

Updated: New Options for Miners
I am sincerely sorry and apologize for my previous post.
Unfortunately, I fell for an LLM hallucination 😞
However, to make up for it, I kept the concept and changed the implementation.
✨✨ Updated Instructions for =<5 KH/s Mining ✨✨
In essence, each miner gets their own P2pool instance and all payouts go to their wallet address, NOT the P2pool wallet address (via a router — see the website)
Current Max Concurrent Instances: 10
Hardware:
• ThreadRipper Pro 3975wx
• 128GB DDR4 2Rx8 ECC RDIMM 2666
• 5TB Storage
• OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
No “Donations” in the service. It’s totally Free.
I would highly appreciate it if you’d checkout the Donations page. It would greatly help with the hardware & Internet costs.

Is reting H/s really worth it?
Basically a guy in a monero mining Telegram group said that he has small rig that gets 1 MH/s and he’s renting another 4 MH/s in Nicehash so he finally solo mines with 5 MH/s which lets him get aprox block every 48h. I‘ve been doing numbers with the current prices of Nicehash and I always end up in negative (losing money) as Nicehash compute is always more expensive than the return.
I come to this reddit to ask if someone here is doing the same thing and or ir I understood the method wrong.
sorry bad English is not my first language.

New Option for Miners =<5 KH/s
Hi all,
Last week, I saw a couple of posts from miners with 1.5 KH/s and another less than 5 KH/s.
I thought, well, can they use my existing, already up and running infrastructure since it’s running anyway, wouldn’t cost me anything. Contribute to the community?
So, I did:
### Please visit https://xmrpool.tech4ai.net/smallminers.html ###
No fees.
P2pool.
Nano side chain.
Full, dedicated and pruned Monero Node.
Non custodial — miners will get payouts directly to their wallets. I, personally, am not involved in payouts, Coinbase transactions, Block Templates, etc.
One question:
I am ready to direct one of my miners if it would help the overall hashrate and Share finding. But i don’t want it to hinder either, so which should i add?
• Epyc miners: avg. ~43KH/s.
• Ryzen 9 9950x: avg. ~25KH/s.
• Ryzen 9 3950x: avg. ~15-17KH/s.
Thank you in advance and I truly hope this will help.

SupportXMR abnormal VarDiff (up to 40M+) and accounting stopped – same wallet works normally on MoneroOcean
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to understand an unusual issue we experienced with SupportXMR. I have done several controlled tests and would like to know if anyone has seen similar behavior or has an explanation.
Setup
We had 3 physical machines mining XMR on SupportXMR using XMRig:
- Intel Core i3-10100: ~2.0 kH/s
- Intel Core i3-1005G1: ~0.8 kH/s
- AMD Athlon Silver 3050U: ~0.9 kH/s
Total local hashrate was approximately 3.7 kH/s, stable, with essentially no rejected shares.
Everything had been working normally on SupportXMR.
What happened
On September 27, the pool-assigned difficulty suddenly became extremely high for machines using the same wallet.
Before the issue, one miner was receiving jobs around 88k difficulty and submitting accepted shares regularly.
Then we observed difficulty values such as:
- ~5.7M
- ~6.8M
- and eventually approximately 43.8M
The other miners connected to SupportXMR also started receiving unusually high difficulty values.
XMRig remained connected to the pool and continued receiving jobs. There were no authentication errors and no rejected-share problem.
However, accepted shares became extremely infrequent because of the difficulty, and the SupportXMR dashboard/API eventually showed:
- Hashrate: 0 H/s
- Workers: 0
- Valid shares counter stopped increasing
Tests performed
- Rebooted all miners.
- No change.
- Tested different SupportXMR ports (including 3333 and 5555).
- Same behavior.
- Tested SupportXMR fixed difficulty using the
wallet+difficultysyntax.
For example:
+85000+35000+40000
SupportXMR immediately honored the requested difficulty.
At those difficulties, XMRig started finding and reporting accepted shares normally again.
However, the SupportXMR dashboard/API accounting still did not appear to update.
- Removed the fixed-difficulty suffix and tested the normal wallet again on port 3333.
The pool again assigned unusually high VarDiff values (approximately 1M–7M depending on the miner), despite individual hashrates being only around 0.8–2.0 kH/s.
A/B test with MoneroOcean
To rule out the wallet, XMRig installation, hardware, and basic network connectivity, I took one of the affected miners and connected it to MoneroOcean using:
- the same XMR wallet
- the same XMRig installation
- the same machine
- the same Internet connection
It connected immediately.
MoneroOcean initially assigned a difficulty around 320k, an accepted share appeared roughly 35 seconds later, and the difficulty subsequently adjusted to approximately 197k.
The MoneroOcean dashboard also immediately recognized the wallet and worker.
We then moved the whole farm to MoneroOcean.
The farm is currently running normally with 4 physical workers at approximately 4.2–4.4 kH/s, continuously submitting shares with zero rejected shares.
What I'm trying to understand
Has anyone experienced a similar situation with SupportXMR where:
- VarDiff suddenly becomes several million or tens of millions for a relatively small miner;
- XMRig remains connected and continues receiving jobs;
- forcing a lower difficulty restores normal share frequency;
- but the SupportXMR dashboard/API accounting stops updating?
I'm particularly interested in knowing whether this could be related to:
- VarDiff state getting stuck;
- wallet/session state;
- public IP/NAT state;
- Stratum session handling;
- or a pool-side accounting/backend issue.
I don't want to conclude that this is necessarily a SupportXMR bug, because I don't have visibility into the pool backend. I'm mainly trying to understand the behavior and determine what additional test would be useful.
I can provide sanitized XMRig log excerpts showing the difficulty changes if that would help.
Thanks!

My mining Rig (11 mother cards)
Mining Rig (xmrig on p2ool)
1500w
CPU : 7950x
Card mére : miniforum, MSI , JGINYUE
Only one memory card per Card mère (5600,CL40,DDR5, 8G)
For miniforum 2 cards memory (5600 also)
For each card ; 130w 17KH. > 187 kh for all
So 187kh for 1500w
8 4⁄187 h /w

New hashrate rental marketplace — HashMarket
New hashrate rental marketplace — HashMarket
I’ve launched HashMarket.tech, a new marketplace for renting mining hashrate.
It works around the same basic idea as MRR: ASIC owners can list their available hashrate and set their own rental price, while miners can rent hashrate and point it at their own pool.
I’m currently looking for both:
- ASIC owners who want to list their machines
- miners looking for additional hashrate
The marketplace is live and I’m currently building up the first group of users.
HashMarket: https://hashmarket.tech
If you run ASICs, I’d be interested in hearing what would make you choose a new rental marketplace over the existing options.

Windows defender flags monero wallet as a threat or do i have a virus?!
Is this dangerous or is it just because of the miner that comes with the monero wallet? I don't know what to do right know.

Need help with Monerod and P2Pool set up
Hello everyone,
I am needing some help in settig up my P2Poll for external connections. I have done everything i can possibly think of ( which is only a bit since im not too savy on this ). I cant get for the life of me to get my miners to connect from outside of my network. if i try to connect to my own node from outside it.
I also cant seem to get it to check connection on the nano observer. i get this error Error connecting to host: dial tcp My Wan IP:37890: connect: no route to host. I know i am mining and gettting shares but i cant check it on thier site

New Monero Pool
A new Monero pool. I mentioned it a while back, but a block hadn't been found yet; hopefully, it meets the posting criteria now. :) If you'd like to contribute some hashrate or offer any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. https://shadowhash.net/

PRL Mining Now Live on MoneroOcean
If you mine PRL and would rather get XMR for your efforts, MoneroOcean now has that option. No more fussing with exchanges. Everything is auto-converted to XMR at MoneroOcean!
Use either SRB or Bzminer. Both work well with MO pool.
The pool connection is at sg.moneroocean.stream until more endpoints become available.
Example config:
--algorithm-gpu pearlhash --pool sg.moneroocean.stream:10128 --wallet YourXMRWallet --worker RigName --password RigName~pearl
Pic is from a 2070 Super getting 65TH/s on pearlhash.

What do you expect in payout(s) at this Hashrate & “Mini” Sidechain?
Given XMR’s price today, my hashrate and mining P2pool on the Mini Sidechain, I am receiving very decent payouts that total to, let’s just say, comfortably over $10 a day.
However, I had an AI agent evaluate my setup (Monero Node, P2pool and each individual “worker” XMRig).
It came back with minor suggestions to Monerod and P2pool which I already knew about.
But it suggested some very new (to me) and interesting changes to XMRig.
I already know about CPu affinity and the impact of NUMA nodes, depending on your RAM layout, speed, timing and total amount of RAM depending on number of modules.
Question:
Anyone mines with numactl pinning threads to the corresponding NUMA node? Thus running 2, 4, 8 XMRig instances to avoid cache thrashing and gain 15-40% in hashrate?
