There was always that one motherfucker who would mouth the spout

My thoughts exactly. Some kids were straight making out with that bitch.

I didnt watch that show at all until I was at a buddy's place and this scene was on. I was rolling laughing and went home and started the series lol

It's been almost 20 years, but I will always remember my old classmate Ryan for mouthing that thing while sick. I opted to find another one.

•

u/Deadlift_007 47m ago

You're better than me. I saw that once and pretty much swore off water fountains since.

The only way I use them now is when I'm on a long run and there's literally no other option.

•

u/belladonnagilkey 42m ago

I don't use them now either due to the pandemic blowing the lid off of just how many people are THAT BAD at personal hygiene, but Ryan was certainly an eye opener on that one where fountains are concerned.

u/Dry-Text-6864 Millennial 2h ago

Lmao 😂 when all you wanted was a 2 second sip!

•

u/Mattm025 1h ago

“1, 2, 3, 4, you don’t need anymore”

•

u/kitsunewarlock 22m ago

All the kids would start counting at my school. Then you'd have to get back in line if you wanted more water. In retrospect it was pretty silly.

u/FireFoxUse 2h ago

I remember using a public water fountain about 5 years after the whole COVID pandemic. I guess I should've waited longer because I was puking so much the next day that I lost a good 5lbs from it.

Now I can't eat ramen (what I had the night before)

For me it was post dodgeball, and literally by the gym lockers

u/Careless-Passion991 2h ago

This thing would make your eyes roll back if you were thirsty enough. That early age dopamine rush.

31

u/Significant-Cry-9204 Millennial 3h ago

There was only one of those in my school. All the other ones were the white porcelain or whatever ones that were room temperature water always.

29

u/MinePretend132 2h ago

They are durable. My kids go to my elementary school and they still have them from at least 1990.

They added a water bottle filler that's chilled. The kids live like royalty.

6

u/jakethabake 2h ago

I remember a kid ran through one in middle school and tore it clean off the wall

6

u/VT_Squire 1h ago

pfft, bitch-ass wall.

22

u/SnooCakes6195 2h ago

I would always hear "leave some water for the fishes!"

3

u/SquishTheProgrammer Millennial ‘89 2h ago

Drinking the Hoover dam.

2

u/SnooCakes6195 2h ago

Hahahahah yeah I heard that too!

1

u/Dry-Text-6864 Millennial 2h ago

Yes, that one too! 🤣

4

u/SnooCakes6195 2h ago

They'd make me go last every time, they knew once it was my turn on this bad boy there ain't no getting me off it 😤

21

u/vulcan1358 2h ago

Yeah that would be the compressor firing up. Gotta get the R-134 flowing.

10

u/Feeling_Win5863 2h ago

This guy water fountains.

15

u/AlaskanJP 2h ago

There was one water fountain where it tasted like carrots. Thinking back I wonder what caused the water to taste like that because it wasn’t supposed to be flavored lol

4

u/TIC321 2h ago

Probably came from well water or ground water

•

u/Plampth 1h ago

Or a juicer.

10

u/goatskin_sheep 1984 3h ago

Ugh. Those just remind me of church

8

u/writeitregreddit 2h ago

I wish we had a push button. We had a knob we had to twist and hold to keep the water going. Much more labourous 😭

8

u/JFKRFKSRVLBJ 2h ago

Someone always put used gum or a half-eaten lollipop in the fountain so I felt gross drinking from it.

10

u/Eatmyscum 2h ago

I would NEVER drink from one today. When I was 8, not even a second thought.

•

u/martialar 1h ago

you gotta let it run a few seconds to flush away the germs first

•

u/oakenfairy 1h ago

I stopped drinking from these after I kept getting sick 🤢, but damn that water tasted so good

•

u/Radiomaster138 19m ago

I stopped when I saw other kids French kissing the damn fountain like they’re about to be drafted into WWIII.

5

u/Physical_Archer_689 2h ago

I use to suck that water down so hard

4

u/thisistherevolt 2h ago

I hear so many horror stories about these from folks, but it wasn't like that in Metro Atlanta. Our fountains also had good filters on them as the water from either main rivers is muddy at best. And with the Flint nowadays, I'd rather drink from the retention pond in front of my neighborhood.

3

u/-peas- 1h ago

We have one at work that's perfectly maintained, cleaned, and filtered. Its the best water ever still.

3

u/Any_Fennel3517 2h ago

My local Home Depot had this in the back of the store, whenever i went in with my Dad, I always had to make sure to get a sip

3

u/ZapBranniganski 2h ago

This picture gives me brain freeze.

3

u/gurknowitzki 2h ago

Damn did this thing hit after basketball and football practice. Just setup shop for a couple of mins and zone out to the refreshment

3

u/Oren72 1h ago

Pure nectar of the gods…

3

u/VUVUVUV 1h ago

Bubbler and I will not accept any other names for this machine.

•

u/OkSmoke9195 58m ago

It's a bubbler. I was today years old when I realized these things actually cooled the water.

3

u/staggernaut 1h ago

So refreshing, and I was always so thirsty! It bugged me when kids would say "1, 2, 3, that's enough for me".

•

u/PeterNippelstein Millennial 1h ago

Ice fucking cold

•

u/Influence_X 32m ago

I always waited until nobody was around so I could drink from it for like 30 seconds straight

6

u/Nocturnatron 2h ago

And then somebody pushes on the back of your head and your whole face is crisp and cool

•

u/Brumski07 1h ago

Felt like I was drinking water from the 60s when I hit this bih

2

u/msbkid 2h ago

The spout on ours was free to rotate and you'd have to make sure it wasn't turned toward you otherwise you're wearing it.

2

u/ego_brain 2h ago

Bubbler

•

u/Imperial_TIE_Pilot 1h ago

And not a water bottle in sight, yet we survived

•

u/Suckmyduck_9 1h ago

With a little bit of lead

4

u/LuxyontheMoon 2h ago

The one at my school always gave me a stomach ache

•

u/pomplemice 10m ago

nothing like a good dose of lead after geometry class

1

u/FnEddieDingle 2h ago

It was never that cold

1

u/scough Older Millennial 2h ago

Had one of these next to my high school gym. Teacher would have us run a mile, afterward I’d keep running back into the building so I could drink like half a gallon before anyone lined up behind me.

1

u/AMediaArchivist 2h ago

The water fountain at school tasted like spit

1

u/ifucked_urbae 2h ago

In first grade, I didn’t know you were supposed to actually drink the water from these fountains. I would use the drinking fountain to rinse my mouth and I got in trouble for spitting into the drain, and I remember being confused about why I was in trouble.

1

u/Select-Internal-3141 1h ago

Or... it wasnt wired up right and electricuted me. And the teachers didnt give a shit.

•

u/Legal-Butterfly-4507 39m ago

Yes and full of bacterial infections in every gulp...

1

u/Independent_Egg6355 2h ago

What replaced it?

11

u/TIC321 2h ago

This, more of an upgrade though

3

u/Independent_Egg6355 2h ago edited 20m ago

It’s interesting how we didn’t use water bottles.

3

u/SanchoPandas 1h ago

Bottles rule. I’m never going back.

1

u/bloatedkat 2h ago

And the water always tasted like mud because they'd use tap water instead of using filters like modern ones.
