Mental Health Megathread Tuesday Check In: How's Everybody's Mental Health?

Good day, everyone and welcome to our weekly mental health check-in thread! Feel free to comment below with how you are doing, as well as any coping skills and self-care strategies others can try! For information on mental health resources and support, feel free to consult our resources wiki (also located in the sidebar!) (IMPORTANT NOTE RE: THE RESOURCES WIKI: As Reddit is a global community, we hope our list of resources are diverse enough to better serve our community. As such, if you live in a country and/or geographic region that is NOT listed/represented but know of a local resource you feel would be beneficial, then please don't hesitate to let us know!)

Remember, you are human, it's OK to not be OK. Life can be very difficult and there's no how-to guide for any of this. Try to be kind to yourself and remember that people need people. No one is a lone island and you need not struggle alone. Remember to practice self-care and alone time as well. You can't pour from an empty cup and your life is worth it.

Take a moment to check in with a loved one, friend, or acquaintance. Ask them how they're doing, ask them about their mental health. Keep in mind that while we may not all be mentally ill, we all have mental health.

If you find yourself in particular struggling to go on, please take a moment to read and reflect on this poem.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This mental health check-in thread is NOT a substitute for real-world professional help/support. MensLib is NOT a mental health support sub, and we are NOT professionals! This space solely exists to hold space for the community and help keep each other accountable.

If you are in crisis, are considering hurting yourself or someone else, or feel like you can't go on, we advise you to contact your local emergency services, go to the nearest emergency room, or mental health crisis evaluation centre. If that seems too scary or difficult right now, please consider calling a suicide hotline for support. You matter and should get the help you deserve.

For help developing a safety plan, please consult this PDF. Therapy can also be a good support resource. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be struggling to seek out therapy! We all need a supportive ear sometimes! If you are considering therapy but don't know where to start, we recommend taking a look at Psychology Today, International Therapist Directory, or OpenCounseling for a provider in your country or, if in the US, contacting your nearest branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Buzzfeed has also published an informative article about what happens when you call a suicide hotline, for those who might feel hesitant. You matter and your life is absolutely worth it. Be kind to yourself.

Somewhat better, psych doubled my antidepressant. It seems to be helping.

Spending more time focusing on today, and not what went wrong or not my way yesterday has helped. Hoping it course corrects sooner than later.

I've been noticeably placid this week. I'm not sure what that's about but people keep asking if I'm ok and I don't know what to say.

Got a call from my mom this morning. Her chihuahua, Chili, died. From the way my described how things went, I think Chili knew it was her time.

She went into my mom’s room, breathing heavily, and lay next to my mom. Not long after, she took her last breath.

It hurts for me because I was there for some time in Chili’s life. I know I’ll be okay sooner than my mom.

Rest in peace, Chili. You took care of my mom at a time when she really needed someone in her life. You were a tiny ball of cuteness, sass, and sweetness. Your love of people was always so endearing.

I feel like spending less time online has
been helpful for my mental health. This may seem obvious to many here, but I’ve recently done it and it’s been great. Because people online voice their genuine, justified frustrations with very divisive or borderline hateful rhetoric, and when I try to respond they’ll often say I’m arguing in bad faith.

You may feel a bit of FOMO from a discussion and want to return to arguing with people online but that’s how phone addictions work. Since people IRL aren’t completely anonymous there’s more civility in IRL discussions.

How are y'all when changing therapists? For me it's sometimes been hard, not sure if I'm averse to conflict, or if I have trauma related to being averse to conflict. But yeah, I stuck once with a bad therapist for years despite disliking it.

Seems like a weird contract, that of therapy, like a different type of contract than normally, like maybe they know better than you what you should do for example.

the first time i switched it was awkward, every time thereafter I sent a generic email stating that I wished to terminate services without any official 'reason'. as a patient we have the right to terminate services inasmuch as they do. i am not proud of the number of therapists I have been to, though when 'shopping around' I am limited by my benefits and whether people are able to work with me or not. i got lucky a couple years ago and found someone decent.

I agree. Its always hard to.end any relationship. I always try and remember: people are in your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. The reality is vv few are there for life. Seems like your season with this person is coming to an end. and thats ok.
