..so that we don't have 50,000 separate posts and also I can update the map tracking which stations have new readers
Myki area finished 7/12/2025, see progress gif here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MelbourneTrains/comments/1pgaoaz/new_myki_reader_rollout_completed_for_trains/
Last update 23/9/2026 - Wangaratta and Avenel

Update 1/9/2026: Added G Class note, Z3.168 and C2.5113 have new readers but are out of service, Z3.210 has been removed

Last updated 25/6/2026, but please report any buses with the old readers! As we are not keeping track of every single bus it is possible that there are some individual buses that haven't been upgraded, but every operator has the vast majority done as far as we know.

I was just walking along Elizabeth Street in the CBD and saw this G-class tram heading north, so I took a pic. I assumed it was tram 7006, but it turned out to be 7009! Good to see more of the Gs on the streets, though I assume this one is currently being used for driver training rather than passenger service.

Hey all, sharing an update on photographing the tactile ground surface indicators (TGSI) at all Metro stations. We’ve collected quite a few more stations this week so big thank you to everyone who has helped!
I can already see there are some stations that are listed as having TGSIs on Metro Trains website, but are incredible poor condition in reality - which is very helpful for my story.
If you’re out catching a train anytime soon, please share some images of the TGSIs here. TYSM!

It's the depot, not the platform, but it sorta counts?

Title. Also seems to have kept the wheel slippage feature in the wet from its older siblings.

After pushing for consistent answers on the need to close exits at Richmond Station most of the time – I've ended up with an inbox often full of people sending photos of Exit 3 (MCG / Barassi Way) and Exit 4 (Olympic Blvd) when they are open or closed.
Rather than keep that information to myself, I've added this to an existing project that I run:
It automatically shows in light green when the special event exits should be open, and in darker green when confirmed by someone in person with a photo.
It's not a great solution, but maybe better than nothing if you want to see at a glance which exits are definitely, or likely open before getting on the right end of the train.
UPDATE: thanks to those who have offered to help. If I end up with a better way to manage that, I will post an update. Ideally the exits end up open full time and none of this is needed!

I've seen a container train pass through Sunshine on the standard gauge a few times over the last couple of days. It's always got a pair of ex-V/Line N class locomotives on it, one at either end of the ~800 m consist. Does anyone know what movement this is?
(No photos because I've never been in a spot to be able to photograph it when it goes through).

First photo: Southbound stop toward Glen Iris.
Second photo: D2.5010 at Northbound stop. Taken from Southbound stop.
PID’s aren’t installed as of yet.
Good to see another level access stop. However still a long way to go.

Just some quick background info:
I have a tertiary myki card, and I am still enrolled. However, my PTV Student ID (the one they glue stick a picture of my face and laminate it) has expired.
I have a Healthcare Card which is still valid. I have digital and physical, I carry both.
When I open the mobile PTV app, it says the myki I use is a tertiary card.
My question is - Can I, without receiving a fine/being reported use my tertiary myki without the PTV student ID but hand over my HCC? Or do I need to go and get a new "concession" myki, even though they provide the same benefits?
Thank you in advance for any response :)

For context: given the current cost of living, fuel prices, tolls, CBD parking (and wear and tear), I’m curious where people who could drive draw the line.
Personally, for my commute I'm looking at 75 mins door-to-door via train and some walking/tram vs 50 mins driving. PT takes me 25 minutes longer but I think I'm happy to sacrifice it as I save about $50 per day (rough calculation) in car-related costs. I'm curious where others draw the line.

Hey all. For the past few months I've been building TransitAlert (transit-alert.com), a free, unofficial app for Melbourne public transport. It started because I wanted one place to see where my train actually is, not just the timetable.
What it does:
Live map of every Metro train, V/Line, tram and bus, using PTV's live data
Departure boards for any station or stop, with live countdowns and platforms
Disruptions, grouped by line, with notifications you can filter to just your lines
Trip planner across trains, trams and buses, with live "next service" times
Train details like stopping pattern, consist and which carriage you're in. HCMTs show all 7 cars.
Report a problem from any screen if something looks wrong. Every report gets an ID so you can see when it's fixed.
It's free, has no ads, and isn't affiliated with PTV or Metro. It's just me building it in my spare time.
Join the tester group: https://groups.google.com/g/transitalert-testers
Open this link in Chrome on your Android phone, signed into the same Google account, and tap "Become a tester": https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.floot.u444d0d60f01f4a67a474ba6f61aabb9f
Give it 15–30 minutes, then install it from Google Play.
iPhone users can use the website, which works well added to your home screen.
Would love to hear what's broken, what's confusing, or what you'd want added. Cheers!

For I think the first time the training film "It Your Business' is available publicly online. It is a training film made for VLine staff in 1986, but it has become infamous for the bright pink Ozride livery worn by T334. Pictures of T334 in this livery have circulated around the internet for a while and given OzRide a bit of a cult following with coins, beanies and even a HO model as part of Auscion's T Class run being made for the fake company.

i'm wondering because they still kept the overhead and tracks and even built a tram stop on the old route but made it a bus stop and its still connected at one end but disconnected at the other

Box hill has the potential to be a fantastic transport hub however the facilities are pretty run down and seen better days.
Would it be worth spending that little extra and negotiate with the shopping precinct to connect all forms of transport properly?
Would just hate to see them build the SRL just to dump passengers in the already congested shopping entrance and with 0 connection to other modes of transport
