Maybe we do the thing where instead of someone who was good coming over and having numbers like this, we start with the bad numbers and see if they do the opposite?
He's absolutely perfect. How's his positional player pitching? Hopefully he can throw a 30mph lob somewhere in the same area code as home plate. We're so back.
lets be real here, you dont need to be a defensive wizard to play first base, as that is a pretty common place to park a player that hits but can't field for beans

a real "showing your ass" comment. this is a pure depth move. no one expects this guy to sniff the majors next year, but you still have to fill Tacoma with ballplayers
I would equate this more to digging around the scrap wood bin in the shop and seeing if anyone threw in a piece of wood that could be turned into..... "something"
Grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington. Have always rooted for him to be successful. Friends with a few people I know. Career numbers have not been great though, which has been a bummer.
I personally doubt he figures it out, and I’m not sure why they made this move. However, I hope he does. Just wanted to provide a different perspective from all the (justifiable) confusion.
That's what I was thinking. Just because you claim him doesn't mean you're going to use him immediately. The M's may have seen something they like and are trying to get him over to Tacoma to act as depth there while they coach him, and if that doesn't work then you just let him go entirely.
They bought a cheap lottery ticket, there's nothing to "get." Maybe he turns into something, maybe he doesn't. If he doesn't, they just cut him loose with zero repercussions.
If he clears waivers and elects free agency (likely) we could have tried to bring him in on a minor league deal and not given him a spot on the 40 man. As it stands he is on the 40 man and likely gets cut between now and Nov. and we then have to DFA him. I guess this lets us talk to him sooner and maybe we can get him looked at by our docs since he ended the season with a dislocated shoulder. We’ll now be on the hook for any rehab unless or until he signs a deal elsewhere regardless.
My point is we’re almost certainly going to give up our control of him and we’re not going to get to see if he turns it around first, it’s going to be a short turnaround.
doesn't matter that he's out of options--he's never been outrighted before and doesn't have enough service time to turn down the assignment to Tacoma. unless some other team claims him on waivers we will be able to retain our control of him
Waivers and shit are confusing. My initial take was ignoring the 3 years of service time thing, and so before I replied again I went and combed through the rules around this stuff again. I then went to see if he had been outrighted before. Like you I did not see that. However, last offseason, he was DFA’d and then able to elect free agency. That gives me the impression that he would be able to do so again.
weird, right? I don't know the Rockies' logic there (who does?) but they'd have been able to outright him if they wanted him hanging around the org still. I believe that that dfa -> "elected free agency" progression is shorthand for him having simply been released
I’m trying to think of and locate someone in a situation more similar to Toglia, but not having success. Robles was a different situation, he definitely could have elected free agency himself when the Nats DFA’d him. He shows as released though. Maybe Toglia’s entry was inaccurate, but I’d think if the Rockies just decided they didn’t want him it would say released similar to Robles.
yeah I'm not sure how Robles' situation is different, though the transaction entry for him that succeeds that screenshot says "Seattle Mariners signed free agent CF Victor Robles." maybe it is purely nomenclature?
found some recent end-of-regular-season roster-management transactions (Lyon Richardson, Jose Urquidy, Joe Mantiply) and their pages all follow the DFA -> "elected free agency" form. strange
The only part of it I don't get is that he's likely to be DFA'd when we have to return all the 60-day IL guys to the 40-man for the offseason. Like, you don't need or even want a full 40-man when the season's done if you have a bunch of injured guys you want to hang onto.
We have SEVEN guys on the 60-day IL, and I think only 3 on expiring contracts.
It would make a lot more sense if this were a minor league deal or a NRI to spring training.
as I said in a different reply: doesn't matter that he's out of options--he's never been outrighted before and doesn't have enough service time to turn down the assignment to Tacoma. unless some other team claims him on waivers we will be able to retain our control of him. outrighting takes him off the 40 man and simply dumps him into the minor league system
i guess he replaces nolan jones? almost literally the same circumstances, performance, and age. i would not expect him to be on the roster next season unless things have gone horribly wrong or horribly right.
Every move Jerry makes this offseason will be mocked and questioned. Even something that looks good on paper, which this certainly isn’t, will be ridiculed. He’s in a death spiral. Stanton did him no favors keeping him around.
No, this is the dumbest thing. You think they're building the team around him or something? They're going to try to get him in Tacoma. They might not even be able to do that without someone else claiming him first.
I'm the biggest Jerry hater but the comments on stories like this are so predictably dumb. This is just some random roster move affecting the 50th spot on the depth chart that every team does dozens of times a year. It's not Jerry's fault someone decided to write an article that got posted to Reddit. No one is bragging about this as significant.
