I’m a 19 year old Welsh Mariners fan. For the first 18 years of my life I couldn’t care less about baseball, it was just some irrelevant American sport. Then last year I watched the Dorktown Mariners documentary and I was hooked (thank you, Jon Bois). From that moment I became a newly minted baseball fan and I decided the Mariners were going to be my team.
This is the first season I’ve been fully invested in baseball, first season I’ve rooted for the Mariners all the way. Yet hearing all the Rick Rizzs tributes, I feel like I’ve been listening to him for years.
I’m listening to his farewell speech over 4,500 miles away from Seattle, in a country where baseball barely registers, and I’ve got a lump in my throat. What a man. I’ve wanted to be a sports commentator since I was little and he is an inspiration to anyone who’s ever harboured such dreams. I may be late to the party, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Rick.
As an old lifelong Mariners fan since 1977, I've got to say kudos to you. By choosing the Mariners you selected hard mode in your journey as a baseball fan. The Mariners are the only team in MLB that has never appeared in a World Series game and they can be frustrating to watch. If you haven't noticed by now we can be pretty bipolar in this sub depending on if the Mariners are winning or losing. We're either fully believing we're going to win the World Series or we're talking about drinking bleach. But either way we'll always be back for tomorrow's game.
So I just had a thought: the mariners developing an international following because of a weird hyper-detailed internet documentary about them is precisely the type of weirdness that the documentary itself is about.
Jon Bois has not only documented the weirdness of the Seattle Mariners, but actually reinforced it.
Other teams usually celebrate when a failing manager gets axed. In true Seattle fashion, we continue to not do things normally because we don’t hate Dan as a person - we just don’t want him as manager.
“Continuing to process” is the understatement of the year
I’m not sure how popular a take this will be but I find it hard to find sympathy. He was a nepotism hire with no experience and him taking the job and staying around this long set the team back. It was selfish through and through.
I'm currently hiding in my van from my family listening to Rick say goodbye so I can cry in peace. 😭 I'm going to miss him so much. We've been so lucky.
Inexcusable. It took me a minute to realize it, pulled the broadcast up on my phone and caught the final out catch live. Rewinded and listened to the whole inning and right into his speech, but damn, 770 really dropped the ball.
I was so confused, I was at the game wanting to listen and I was thinking, "this fucking commericial is taking forever" the I realized it was too late. His post game speech was fantastic and truly an amazing send off.
I hope there's a place where we can go back and listen to the 9th, I made it a point to listen to this game instead of football today, so pretty bummed I missed the 9th too...
It’s great, and it’s also warming is knowing I’ll see a lot of y’all next season and hopefully I meet some of you guys at spring training if I can go !

(For those who were doing the $5 donation-per-hit thing, your total for today was $60, and your total for these five games was $235 (47 hits). But even $5 in total would be amazing; I think it's more about the number of donations than the amount of them on a day like today).
Last year's offseason was a lot less depressing than this. With the lockout and uncertainty of how our players will perform, I really don't know what to expect.
Poor Dan. He clearly wasn't well suited to the manager role, and letting him go is obviously the correct decision. But it's also obvious that he was scapegoated for myriad issues, only some of which were his fault. He can't be blamed for how severely the players underperformed expectations this year.
He also seems like a genuinely good person, and I feel for him.
I've been listening to Rizzo on the radio for almost 40 years. While it wasn't always pleasant hearing the results of the games, it was always a joy to hear Rick's passion for the game.
What a game to be at the stadium. An interesting game, victory, and the whole crowd emotional for Rick and JP. Logan (Walter) was on. Gorgeous weather. A bit overwhelming tbh. See you all next year!
Okay the closing package on Mariners TV with all the sick plays from this year cut to “Dream On” by Aerosmith was pretty brutal lol, what a way to go out
Although this year did not turn out the way it was meant to be, today was worth all the agonizing losses.
Saying farewell to Rick Rizz after all these years makes me forget all those ugly losses and wipe the slate clean with hope for next year, if there is no lockout.
And, yeah, it sucks to see Wilson get fired, but someone has to take the fall here. I'm sure he'll land on his feet with the organization in some sort of special advisor role so there's no hard feelings.
