Which MUD? MUDs with Dragons

Hello all, I was curious and had a question. Is there a good list of MUDs that let you play as dragons? Currently the two I'm aware of are Dragons Gate and Achaea. Is there any others about? Bonus points if it's full on dragons and not a bipedal dragon (like a dragonborn).

Discussion scammer's hitting discord groups on Rmud

Hi all, every single time I post a promotional post now in this group I am getting hit with same old scammers joining my discord group.

I get the "Is there anyone looking for a developer?" that keeps getting spammed twice a day, and not replying to any messages to stop

And the "I'm an artist and I'm looking for commissions so come check out my page I have had some health conditions and I need money " which often changes slightly in the message with the same focus on the looking for commissions, I have health conditions and I need help.

Is anyone else getting hit with the same thing? Am I just stupid putting the address of the discord group on here? or any ideas on how I can stop this happening

Thank for any helpful advice

Discussion Midgard Mud

I have run across a German/English translated mud called Midgard Mud, and I was wondering if any of you guys play this mud and if so is this a heavily role playing game? I was also wondering does anyone know how big this map is, for example is it as big as Europe, does it take place during the Viking/English raids? I downloaded its app on my chromebook and will be trying it out, but the game is in German and I have to translate it in english, while talking about translations does any one know how to translate nonenglish muds to English on Mudlet?

Building & Design MUD MAP design

I am a newcomer here in the mud forums and am unaware of the etiquette, I assume you get this kind of post frequently and so if it is removed I completely understand. I have a quick question for the players of MUD's specifically about map behavior and player interaction. In brief, I'm toying with fog of war in my map design and am wondering if that might enhance the RP aspect of the play. Essentially for the most part a player must discover the locations of NPC's and other markers rather than having the omniscience to know where everything is. I'm considering adding basic "where" but I think "look" should be the tool that gives hints as to what's around the player and not just a map telling the player where to go.

let me know if this is a little extreme, I'm sure its been done before I just want to know how it feels as a player to wake up in a room and not know where to go next. Thank you.

Promotion Cyberpunk RP MU*

Greetings all! I'm actively building a Cyberpunk themed RP MU using Evennia as the engine, and would love to what everyone wants to see in a modern cyberpunk RP MU*. Currently in alpha, and I thought I'd drop in to see what kind of things everyone would like to see in this game. Setting is 100yrs ahead in 2126 in New Orleans. No magic systems are planned.

Neon Drifters - neondrifters.com

I played CS off/on for the better part of 20 years, so this is a bit of a love letter to some of their systems, like decking.

I'm working on a fully fleshed out PvE job system for "quick ops" that are given by various fixer contacts. Each Op site, objective, layout, and opposition is randomly generated to have anything from elimination, rescue/extraction, sabotage, theft, hacking, and several others. There will be a full reputation & heat system with the various factions. Piss off one enough, and you'll start seeing consequences.

Once the solo quick ops are set, I plan to incorporate a "crew" option, where you set how many are in your crew to take on these ops as a group.

Skills are currently trained outside of cgen as you use them, gaining experience through meaningful use. Character points are gained which can be used to raise attributes or buy edges (perks/advantages) currently.

Detailed vehicles are being worked on, that can be upgraded, modded, and repaired. Planning for a "pursuit" mechanic with vehicles to expand their play a fair bit.

Since it is Evennia and python, it can be accessed using traditional text based clients like MUSH Client, or you can use the built in web client. If you use the web client, you'll get to enjoy some graphical GUI upgrades, such as a mini map, interactive GUI multiplayer games in the casinos, and arcade cabinets in the bars and arcade.

There is currently a robust medical system in place for those that like the EMS or Hospital play. There are clones, so a perma death only occurs when cloneless. When a character dies, there is a 90second period during which it is possible to rescue them, if help arrives in time.

Setting up forums on the website right now, discord is already setup and linked to the game.

So, let me hear your ideas and suggestions!

Also! While the Npc's have the regular limited AI, I am tinkering with wiring in a limited LLM to be able to play different roles to increase the immersion of some of the Npc's.

Community Updates: Book Club and MUD Resources

Book Club

Quick update in response to my original post 2 weeks ago:

After an initial round of invites and testing, the site is now open to all. If you'd like to participate, visit https://community.writing-games.org and create an account using your preferred method, then click Book Shelf in the side nav to get started.

The site's Welcome post also has some useful tips and instructions, including how to provide feedback and suggestions to make it better.

So far, I'm the only one who has posted - so please don't be shy! 😅🙏

MUD Resources

I also wanted to let folks know about the existing MUD Resources site. It's a project I started about 5 months ago, when I decided that the single page on Writing Games was too limited.

Thanks in part to a growing interest in MUD dev, the new site has expanded a lot. Many additions are things I heard about on this subreddit or that were shared in the MUD Discord server, but I'm sure there's plenty of room for improvement. :)

Community contributions are welcome. See the instructions in the front page FAQs, or click the 'Edit page' link at the bottom of any page that needs fixing. And if you find it useful, please consider adding a link to it on your website/server to help spread the word.

---

And lastly, more of a teaser than a proper update: I'm currently working on an article that looks at community stats from this past quarter (July-September), as a sort of follow-up to the State of the Niche report. Stay tuned!

Discussion What are everyone's plans if the EU KIDS Act goes through?

The EU KIDS Act proposal dropped a couple of weeks ago, and one of the things it explicitly covers is online games, including providers outside the EU if they're offering the game to EU users.

From what I can tell, this could eventually mean age-assurance requirements, child-safety defaults, parental controls, restrictions around player contact, etc. It also doesn't appear to have an obvious exemption for tiny hobby games/MUDs. It's still just a proposal and could change a lot before becoming law, but the current language seems broad enough that MUDs would be caught by it.

So I'm curious what other admins/devs are thinking.

Would you implement whatever age verification/safety infrastructure ends up being required? Make the game 18+ and verify EU players? Block EU connections entirely? Wait and hope there ends up being some sane exemption for small noncommercial projects?

I'm firmly in the "don't touch anything until we see the final law" camp, but I hadn't really expected running a tiny text game to potentially require an EU regulatory compliance strategy.

Discussion ANSI avatars over Intermud-2 (Zebedee): a small, backwards-compatible extension. Looking for feedback from Intermud-2 MUD admins

Hi everyone,

I run Midgard MUD, a German LPMud on LDMud. Our players can create ANSI portraits of their characters (half-block characters, 24-bit colour). The portraits show up with `finger`, in our hall of fame and on hero cards players can share.

Over Intermud this went wrong a lot, because the sending MUD knows nothing about the player on the other end. We saw:

- blinking text (a filter reading `38;2;5;0;255` number by number hits `5` = blink)

- grey or white blocks where unknown codes were replaced

- question marks instead of `▀` for players without UTF-8

- colours the client couldn't actually display

So together with Invisible@Beutelland we worked out a small extension to Intermud-2 (Zebedee protocol):

- **`query ansi`**: a MUD answers `no`, `8`, `16`, `256` or `truecolor`, meaning the colours it generally passes through to its players in finger replies. No answer means no colour.

- **Two optional lowercase fields in finger requests**, `ansi` and `charset` (`utf-8` / `ascii`). They tell the other MUD what the requesting player's client can show, as far as the player's own MUD knows from MTTS, TTYPE or its web client. The sender then picks the matching version, down to a spaces-only one for players without UTF-8.

- **Only colour codes get through**: receivers pass SGR sequences through and strip every other escape sequence. That's worth doing for any MUD that displays Intermud replies.

It's fully backwards compatible. The common inetd ignores unknown fields, there's no new packet type, and MUDs that don't take part notice nothing. Midgard and Beutelland both have it running.

The full write-up (English and German) has screenshots, packet examples, step-by-step code for the common inetd (`/secure/inetd.c`, `/secure/udp/*.c`) and security notes such as rate limiting against spoofed UDP:

https://midgardmud.de/intermud/ansi.html#en

If you run a MUD on Intermud-2, I'd love to hear from you, whether you'd like to implement it, see problems with it, or know a better way. I know most English-speaking MUDs use I3 or Grapevine instead. If you think something like this would make sense there too, I'm curious about that as well.

You can reach me here, by Intermud tell to Odin@Midgard, or on -d-code / -intercode. Or here of course. :-D

MUD Clients modern MUD/MUSH clients that aren't vibecoded slop?

been a longtime mudlet user, but i was wondering if there's any other decent MUD clients out there, especially since the github repo for mudlet has been swarmed with claude commits last month and claude's just been bleeding into the project since last year, and i'd really like to use something that isn't deteriorating into a buggy vibecoded mess.

i know version 4.19.1 of mudlet is an option (before claude got introduced into the project workflow), and mushclient's an old but good choice, but i'd really like to know if there's any other decent clients out there.

Promotion TowersMUX: World of Darkness 20th in London

After a busy summer, we have a lot to talk about for fall! If you'd like a complete rundown on who we are and what we're about (short version: a 20th Anniversary World of Darkness game set in London), the original advert post is here, and, rather than repeat what's in it, we'd like to focus on the new.

First, we're very happy to announce that our automated influence system is up and running! Characters can now use Allies, Contacts, Influence and other suitable stats in game-wide conflicts to determine the outcome of things like the mayoral election, whether the Prince of London awards Domain to new vampires, or whether the Duchy of the Sunrise Road goes to war. Call in allies to support your preferred outcome, deploy your spies to find out who's opposing you, then trade favors, bribes, or threats to bring them over to your side. We continue to refine the mechanics and user commands, and we're committed to using this system to provide our players with opportunities to shape the game world instead of just riding a railroad.

We've also recently had our 200th STed event! Staff regularly run plot scenes for all currently active spheres, and we encourage and welcome players who'd like to do the same. With the exception of a small number of specific story and plot elements listed on our website, no advance staff approval is required. Have an idea? Run with it, let us know how it went, and we'll try to find a way to tie it into other ongoing plot threads if you like -- or leave it to remain an independent storyline if you prefer.

Our grid expansion program continues, as we now have more than 200 IC +hangouts, many of them based on real-world London locations. Visit the British Museum, the Regent's Park, the Ministry of Sound, and many other famous (or infamous) spots. We've added the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow, with Richmond upon Thames in the editing phase, and the urban decay of Croydon on the horizon -- along with the Umbral areas to match. Now that Hounslow's in place, you can walk IC all the way from Heathrow Airport in Hillingdon to the Prince's Court in Canary Wharf! Though you might not want to; in the real world that's an eight-hour-plus walk when you could just take the Underground instead.

And, of course, storyline developments are ongoing. The Anarch vampires of Waltham Forest are struggling with Sabbat infiltrators trying to lay the ground for an incursion, while the Camarilla uncovers schemes from the Followers of Set, intrigues over who will control the newest Domain grant in Hackney, and investigates the mysterious deaths of several mortal proteges of the Toreador clan. The Changeling Duchy of White Cliffs has seized freeholds along the border and is all but daring the London nobility to fight for them, in the face of recalcitrance from the city's best supplier of chimerical weapons and armor; at the same time, a new society of explorers are pushing each other to venture deeper into the Dreaming in search of wonders.

On the Mage side of things, a daring break-in at a mysterious research facility south of London has uncovered evidence of a Technocratic plot to increase aggression in the residents of the city's council estates -- though countering their efforts may prove more difficult, and no one is quite certain whether or not the victims are somehow related to the terrorist attacks made at several festivals over the past twelve months. And the Garou aren't idle, either, as they're busy dealing with Fomori-infested hidden laboratories off the Underground tunnels as well as an outbreak of seemingly random acts of vandalism and destruction from ordinary people who really ought to know better.

New players in all spheres (Vampire, Werewolf/Fera, Mage, Changeling, and Mortal) are welcome, and XP scaling helps ensure that brand new characters can contribute to story scenes alongside those who've been with us for a while. Come join us at https://towersmux.net!

Promotion Cairnholm's October event is now live (Deutsche Übersetzung folgt)

The October event in Cairnholm went live today and will be running throughout the month.

This is the first time I've done a month-long seasonal event in Cairnholm, so I'm also interested to see how it works with players discovering things at very different rates rather than treating it like a conventional quest that everyone starts at the same time.

For anyone who hasn't seen my previous posts, Cairnholm is a free, narrative-heavy MUD set in an occult version of 1886 Scotland. It has Tarot-based classes, quests and long-form campaigns, persistent NPCs, careers, an explorable undercity, dynamic events, and English/German support. It's primarily built around exploration and discovering things rather than grinding mobs.

Connect to: mud.cairnholm.co.uk:1886

As always, bug reports and feedback are very welcome, particularly if the October content manages to do anything I profoundly did not anticipate.

-----

Remember When Calling all TOS TrekMUSE veterans (tos.net), any era

If you ever logged into TOS TrekMUSE, any era I'd love to hear from you.

Was playing there back in the late 90s-early 2000s. Been thinking about it every so often and the newsgroup is pretty much dead now that Google disabled google groups. So I've started a Discord for TOS veterans to reconnect, swap stories, share old logs and screenshots, and just hang out.

If you remember TOS, come say hello: https://discord.gg/pP6CFKtZuk

And if you're still in touch with anyone from those days, please pass it along.

Which MUD? I'm interested in joining the MUD gaming community and would appreciate game suggestions.

I don't have much experience with text-based games, but I really enjoyed trying out games like Cybercode Online and Arclight City (even though they aren't exactly MUDs), and I'm currently interested in exploring more games of this style.

What I missed in Cybercode Online and Arclight City was that the character's life isn't treated as something scarce, something that once lost cannot be recovered – because these games treat death as just another routine factor of gameplay.

Another thing I missed was the role-playing aspect itself. I've been playing tabletop RPGs for about 4 or 5 years and I'm interested in that side, which I also missed in the two examples I mentioned.

In short, I'm a beginner in this type of game; the closest thing to a MUD I've played were Cybercode and Arclight, but I don't know if they can be considered MUDs (as I said before).

Do you have any game suggestions for a beginner in the genre?

Discussion Any fun MUD for mobile?

Hey there, long time lurker in the genre who hasn’t found a game to dig into just yet. I feel kind of dumb for this but cannot seem to find out how to play a MUD on my phone (tried aardwulf via browser and it was cool but definitely not meant for the iPhone 😂)

Figured I’d shoot my shot and ask if anyone else uses mobile effectively

Promotion NukeFire - The Apunkalyptech Mud

Hello again!

It has only been a few weeks since the last NukeFire update, but we have been busy enough that I figured it was time for another one.

A lot of this has come directly from NEW people playing the game and saying, basically, “I really like this class. Why should I eventually have to stop being it?”

So we changed that.

Classes can keep growing

All of the original base classes now have substantial class progression all the way through 2,000 class remorts.

Barbarian, Assassin, Pirate, Slinger, Curist, Samurai, Knight, Cyborg, Vagrant, Ranger, Mutant, Infiltrator and Fanatic can all keep growing into increasingly ridiculous versions of themselves instead of eventually feeling obligated to abandon the class for a prestige class.

We have been doing the same thing with the prestige classes. HeadHunter, Ninja, Voidstriker, Kaiju, Outlander and others now have long remort roads of their own through 2,000, with old abilities continuing to develop and new milestones along the way.

Prestige classes still have their own identity and reasons to play them. We just wanted staying with the class you enjoyto be a real choice too.

We also added Monk

The Monk is our newest prestige class.

NukeFire Monks are not particularly peaceful.

They use fist weapons, martial-arts combinations, counters, defensive stances and increasingly nasty techniques as they grow. They also have their own new 100-room area, The Last Mountain, with Monk equipment, fist weapons, masters and mutated wildlife.

You can build a home now

The new Homeowner system has grown quite a bit.

A home starts small, but your lifetime progression can eventually unlock a property of up to 12 rooms.

You can name and describe the rooms, decide who lives there or visits, recall home, choose it as your login location, and now actually gather construction materials and expand the place.

We have also started adding furnishings and special home amenities. The first of those includes a recovery room that can give you a Well Rested bonus.

There is no rent, property tax or foreclosure. Once you earn your little piece of the wasteland, it is yours.

The world got considerably bigger

A huge new region called The Far Reaches has opened up.

It is thousands of rooms of new overworld, roads, mountains, forests, ruins, caves, settlements and stranger places, with difficulty ranging from fairly approachable remort territory into serious endgame areas.

There are new mobs, bosses, equipment, tattoos, implants, crafting materials, transportation routes and hidden areas.

Far Reaches GPS locations also aren't simply handed to everybody. Players actually explore new zones, and the first person to properly chart one can permanently establish its GPS destination for the rest of the MUD.

We've also been rebuilding and expanding older parts of NukeFire instead of only adding things at the edge of the map.

Crafting keeps getting bigger

More materials are being worked into the world, particularly through the Far Reaches.

Gathering, material storage, refining and older crafting systems have been getting cleaned up too. Some very old crafting such as Dragonscale and Chitin has been modernized rather than abandoned.

Housing is giving us another reason for materials to exist beyond simply making another piece of combat equipment.

The newbie game got some love too

One of our new builders, Hush, recently opened The Burnhouse, which is basically a second-stage tutorial area for somebody who has made it through the earliest game and reached Tek Angeles.

It gives newer players another place to learn how NukeFire works without just throwing an enormous help-file encyclopedia at them. And thanks to the folks that recommend us, we have really seen some growth, for the first time we saw over 100 on the who list, something I honestly never thought I would see again from a new mud.

And speaking of builders, we now have three builders working with us, which I am extremely happy about. The world is starting to grow from more hands and more imaginations than just ours - and it is so refreshing!

And the client hasn't stopped either

The public NukeFire Client is still moving quickly.

We've continued working on the TinTin-style command system, Lua scripting, custom panes, soundpacks, GMCP, accessibility, Reader Mode, screen-reader behavior, keyboard controls, communications review, performance and all of the little things people find by actually using it every day.

Windows, macOS and Linux:

https://nukefire.org/client

NukeFire itself is still what it has always been underneath all of this:

Guns. Remorts. Mutations. Implants. Tattoos. Crafting. Socket gems. Weird equipment. Huge areas. Bad decisions about which direction you decided to walk.

We're just giving everybody a lot more ways to live in it now.

Website:
https://nukefire.org

Client:
https://nukefire.org/client

Host: tdome.nukefire.org
Port: 4000

Aloha,
NukeFireMo, Hiro and builders: Thraydin, Slaps, Jace, and Hush

Help Help:Mushclient hiding logs

I've looked everywhere. The forums solutions for the official Gammon page doesnt work, and I cant figure out where these logs were hidden. I cant even seem to copy them to elsewhere to save them :(

I can see them in mushclient - at least, I can see the titles, but the PC and everything else cannot. I tried looking in 'appdata' and other places, and all I see are shortcuts... back to the original client location where they are hidden. I cannot even open them via the shortcuts. I tried copying the logs folder, as well as setting it to view hidden files.

Are the logs lost?

Which MUD? Looking for a good MUD as a newbie

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for a MUD that can offer both a great solo experience and a hub to meet new people, chill and talk to others.

I don't think i have a favorite genre: realistic, fantasy, sci-fi... I don't mind.

PS: i tried Diskword and got overwhelmed by how big the world is as i kept getting lost again and again.

Community Have any of you fellow videogame historians ever popped into the currently-available form(s) of MUD1, Sceptre of Goth, or other foundations of online gaming?

I've popped into MUD1 via the "British Legends" website, took a few quick looks at different days/times, but it was nearly empty, and the 1 or few other folks logged in were nonresponsive. Similar attempt and results for Scepter of Goth.

Any fellow gaming historians interested in coordinating a brief multiplayer foray into any of this historical stuff?

[Re-posted here after initially posting in a video game history subreddit.]

Thanks!
