First dog I've ever seen that has absolutely no clue how to swim

654

u/Lilcommy Trash Trooper 6h ago

What a failure of a dog his ancestors are looking down on him yelling "they names a swimming technique after us"

92

u/NeedSomeMemeCream Trash Trooper 6h ago

I think I see some color loss in it's fur/hair, so it may be an elderly "ancestor" itself. Also seems like some loss of eyesight.. I'm cutting that cutie some slack.

Poor little old gal/fella ❤️‍🩹 It has outgrown pool time 😢

Doggy paddling

3

u/tacorunnr Trash Trooper 2h ago

My elder dog would swim circles around that dog.

38

u/enternameher3 Trash Trooper 5h ago

To be fair to this dog in question, the "doggy paddle" is considered the worst swimming form possible, and is less of a swimming technique and more so a form of not drowning.

28

u/NekoDarkLink1988 Trash Trooper 5h ago

Hey! I was super excited when I learned how to dog paddle. Tried to show my dad but he didn't give a shit...

31

The dog paddle is amazing. Sure you won’t win a race but when you’re at the resort 2 margs in you not jumping in the pool and butterfly stroking over to your lady. A subtle dog paddle has its purpose.

6

u/Crypticcrypto Trash Trooper 4h ago

Floating gently toward your lass like a rhino in the river.

8

u/foreverandadayalone 4h ago

Not-drowning is not overrated

7

u/Xineth240 Trash Trooper 3h ago

The doggie paddle is only known as the worst technique because of how much energy it uses, not for its efficiency. It's a survival instinct, you're basically using every limb to blindly push yourself upward.

This dog failed at that instinct, blindly twirling in a circle like a dazed deer after being hunted to exhaustion.

To be frank it signals some kind of actual motor disfuntion. Likely an ear problem, the poor thing has balance issues and can't accurately determine which way is upward when submerged in liquid. Probably gets eat infections easily and gets vertigo from ascending too quickly as well.

5

u/StorageSevere5720 Trash Trooper 4h ago

For humans sure, but dogs can't exactly backstroke.

3

u/tall__hat Trash Trooper 4h ago

I would love to see that tho

3

u/tacob87 Trash Trooper 4h ago

With this new information, I'm inclined to believe the dog understood the inefficiencies of the doggy paddle, and therefore chose not to learn it.

3

u/dudeCHILL013 Trash Trooper 4h ago

And it not even doing the not drowning part correctly.

3

u/KuroRyuSama Trash Trooper 3h ago

Yeah, but she had to jump in because the poor dog couldn't even do the thing that's hard wired into its DNA. It's called the doggie paddle because all dogs normally do it INSTINCTIVELY.

That little fur buddy almost drowned after stumbling into a pool within 15 seconds of being exposed to it. It gets a 5/10 doggo score.

To be fair that pool looks like its designed to drown people/animals.

A barely 1' wide slip and slide for the walkway around it, both ends are the deep end, with no stairs or shallow spot, and the only step or ledge inside the pool, is just as narrow as the fuckin walkway on the side.

Idk who designed this pool, but they should be slapped for putting it in an area that fuckin small. I think my insurance would drop me over this.

Imagine there was only 1 person there, imagine trying to lift anything out while trying to grab onto wet fucking marble, let alone a writhing, flailing, flight or flight response animal?!? Its legit pissing me off how horribly designed/planned this is.

15

u/Sparkster227 Trash Trooper 5h ago

There's at least two steps in the pool if you pause at 0:42. But I agree, doesn't seem like a good design. And the backyard opening up to the deep end with barely any room just compounds it.

6

u/foreverandadayalone 4h ago

Yeah, I think that's the first pool I've seen that didn't have the shallow end by the house.

5

u/Yuklan6502 Trash Trooper 4h ago

Our friends have a pool like this for "lap swimming." You have a tie down for a bungee cord thing that attaches to a belt, and you basically swim in place. They put it in for their dad to help him with physical therapy and low impact exercises, along with a bunch of floats you use as, like... reverse weights? Instead of lifting weights, they're dumbbell-floats that you push down into the water.

The whole pool was like 4 feet deep, and had stairs on one side. They were SUPER vigilant about the grandkids coming over because it was potentially very very dangerous!

8

u/Whathefuckwasthat Trash Trooper 5h ago

Took the design from my sims town

5

u/RequirementQuirky468 Trash Trooper 4h ago

Yeah that pool looks like the product of someone designing a home they could easily use to get rid of people they don't like through "accidental" drownings

I have the same f ing dog as the video. He circles my pool looking for frogs- which happen to be almost entirely leaves. And falls in at least one a weak. He is a mutt-pointer/shepard/pit bull. Sinks like a fucking rock everytime.

He looks like those people trying to drown who flail and reach and fight the water and do everything but left physics fix it.

No dude, this is my Boxer. She would spin under water until she was completely disoriented and then swim to the bottom, smash her face into the bottom, realize she’d gone down instead of up, and finally swim up. The worst part is when she got to the surface she thought she could breathe through her eyeballs. So she would only surface her eyes until I forced her snout above water. Then she’d finally take a breath.

11

u/cap10wow Garbage Guerilla 5h ago

My boxer had a little bit of chow in her line, just a black tip on her tongue. She was very loving and loyal and athletic. She was also the least intelligent animal I’ve ever met. Zero sense of self-preservation. Could swim but would forget and try to run underwater. Routinely chased cars in the neighborhood and ran into them at stop signs. Knocked herself unconscious at least 3 times in her 10 years. I suspect that’s what shortened our time together.
Even stupid dogs are awesome.

8

u/Hilsam_Adent Trash Trooper 5h ago

The most moronic dog I was ever around was also a Boxer mix, though the other part in his case was Bull Mastiff. Poor bastard did not get what his owner or I were trying to teach him, but simultaneously, he was the most eager to please pooch you could ever ask for. He would gleefully sit when told to lie down, for example, but his absolute sincerity and happiness at having "done" the command was hard to be mad at.

5

u/DirtandPipes Trash Trooper 4h ago

I’ve got a 4 pound Yorkie who is the wiliest little furball I’ve known, she knows way too many words, she automatically backs way up when people approach a door handle, is constantly positioning herself to avoid being stepped on, and is basically hyper-aware of her surroundings at all times.

I also found out she was hiding her kibble piece by piece under the rug so she could get to the treat at the end of her meal.

Every day feels a little bit like a contest of wills.

When I was a kid we had an English staffy. We took him to the dam one day and he jumped off the dock into the water and sank like a stone. He was kicking him legs and doing all the right things, but I guess his body was too dense or something lol.
Our cattle dog jumped in after him and rescued him, he turned out fine! Just no more swimming for him.

6

u/T-MoneyAllDey Trash Trooper 4h ago

I have a half mastiff-pitbull and he's a brick shit house and just completely sinks to the bottom

4

u/LastMessengineer Rubbish Raider 3h ago

I had the same breed combo. She couldn't swim at all. She'd wade out to where her rear legs could just touch and then beat the surface to hell with her front legs.

2

u/T-MoneyAllDey Trash Trooper 3h ago

I know primates can't swim due to their muscle density and I'm convinced that that's why he can't swim. He tries but he seriously is dense

11

u/MooBearz11 Trash Trooper 6h ago

Actually many dogs are unable due to the they are built. This dog is a prime example, very tip heavy, big headed dogs struggle and often sink; French bulldogs, dense pit bull breeds, dachshund, bulldogs, Boston terriers are the ones I’ve seen come to my work place from drowning (DOA) over the years in emergency vet med. It’s like putting weighs on your shoulders and around your neck only and expecting you to stay afloat. They need a life vest to avoid sinking to the bottom. Even a moment like this I worry about dry drowning. :(

Oftentimes, people think all dogs share the same basic intelligence because they all can eat, shit, and sleep.

But there are some exceptionally dumb dogs just as there are exceptionally dumb people.

4

u/Boridane Trash Trooper 4h ago

I had a black lab growing up that couldn't swim. Hated any water that was not in a bowl. I took her to the lake multiple times and she would almost drown every time, but would run into the water because that was where I was lol

3

u/Fun_With_Math Trash Trooper 3h ago

I had to drag my girlfriend's lab into the water. I made him swim as I held his belly up. I did that at a lake on about 3 hikes before it clicked for him.

That dog LOVED the water after he figured out he could swim on his own.

3

u/Boridane Trash Trooper 3h ago

I tried. She probably needed that life vest for dogs to keep their back straight, but I don't know if those were available way back then. All she would do is splash the water with her butt pointed towards the ground.

I tied her leash up to a park bench after an hour of training. She would drag the bench towards the water if I was in it lmao

3

u/Alive_Drag1947 Trash Trooper 2h ago

I saw this in person when I got a pitbull, and it still confuses me lol

Growing up, I had a lab/St. Bernard mix. He loved to swim, and I thought that was just standard dog behavior...

Later in life, I got a pitbull and he could not swim. At all.

We were hanging out one time on a fishing dock and I pushed him in the water just to see what he would do. (It was only like 4 feet deep.) He just sank directly to the bottom and stood there like a complete derp, staring up at me and blowing bubbles. Literally made zero attempt to even preserve his own life.

I had to jump in and grab him much like this lady.

I really miss the old boy, but man... He was not cut out to be a country dog...

u/KuroRyuSama Trash Trooper 3h ago

I think that dog has a defect in is spatial awareness ability. Either is blind in 1 eye, or it has an inner ear problem that effects its balance. It didn't jump into the pool, it falls in both times. Like it can't tell where the edge of the pool is in relation to is own paws.

My corgi is losing his eye sight and fell into my mom’s pool a few weeks ago. I think it startled him so much that he didn’t know what to do and started sinking like a rock. Kinda. I’ve seen videos of dogs that know to paddle, but they don’t know exactly how to paddle correctly. You can see this dog is moving its legs, but has no idea what it’s doing. We even had a golden retriever who needed practice because she was so clumsy in the water.

2

u/Asleep_Region Trash Trooper 3h ago

Yep, people too, it's why i hate the "just throw them in, they'll swim!" because you really have to be ready for them to not swim, because sometimes they won't. Which is actually why i was scared of water for most of my childhood, i got tossed in, tried to swim, couldn't, lifeguard had to save me. I wasn't scared of drowning really, i was scared someone was gonna throw me in again without warning.

This adorable idiot would not survive one hour out in the wild

3

u/astros78 Trash Trooper 6h ago

That has always scared me; I teach my dogs to swim as soon as they are three months old as a precaution, and this video has stirred up that fear.

My greyhound fell ass over teakettle into a creek TWICE, just leaning over to drink out of said creek. Which was how we found out that greyhounds have so little body fat that they have no buoyancy and sink like a rock in deep water.

We always kept a close eye on him any time we were near water after that.

To not drown, one must swim down.

3

u/jbm793 Trash Trooper 4h ago

They better lock that pool down or they are going to lose that clumsy pup.

3

u/Mission_Set_6892 Trash Trooper 3h ago

My Jack Russell at 8 weeks was like a fish to water. Truly bizarre seeing a dog that can't swim

3

u/lequory Trash Trooper 3h ago

What a dumb dog

3

u/BowsersMuskyBallsack Trash Trooper 2h ago

I'm curious to know how old that dog is, as it is behaving like a dog with cognitive decline.

•

u/Complex_Cold1610 Trash Trooper 1h ago

The fuck…the dog must be ill….every dog can swim out of instincts…

•

u/hippopotobot Trash Trooper 19m ago

Seriously wondering if that dog is neurologically abnormal. It doesn’t just sink or seem to be unable to swim, it makes all the right motions but just in the wrong direction.

It’s decidedly odd. I wouldn’t be rushing to emergency but I’d be showing my vet the video at her next checkup.

Damn I only knew pugs couldn’t swim because of dumb ass humans breeding dogs incompatible with a life without suffering. This makes me so angry… I wonder how many other breeds we bred that can be taken out by a body of water smh

Omg that dog has zero survival instinct....lucky its 2026...

2

u/LasciviousPsyche Trash Trooper 2h ago

You need to leave that dog in the water so it can learn to swim unless this dog is like has had a stroke and disabled or something. What dog can't swim upright? Lol

•

u/Vescend Trash Trooper 1h ago

How does a dog sink like a rock like that, the hell?

•

u/Old_Relationship3460 Trash Trooper 1h ago

The pool is too big for the square footage.

•

u/ActorLarsimoto124 Trash Trooper 58m ago

Doesnt know how and where to walk and diesnt know how to swim. This dog was not created to survive

•

u/SamediB Trash Trooper 51m ago

I have never seen a dog fail to doggy paddle before.

But its ability to swing underwater is kinda impressive.
