so MAGA farmers chased off immigrant farmworkers because Trump said they were taking American jobs, now they can’t find anyone to pick their crops. Funny how the pick-yourselves-up-by-the-bootstraps crowd suddenly needs someone else to do the work

Why would I give up my albeit lousy office job in a climate control building that I only have to work 9-5 weekdays only, to drive all the way out to the middle of nowhere with gas prices the way they are now, to work back breaking long days in the sun, wind, rain etc all for less than minimum wage?

Exactly.  I worked hard to get off the farm, I ain't going back.

I've got a pretty decent office job and make good money, but I work for the federal government so my job is precarious right now. I moved, changed offices and bought land that could be a farm if I needed it to be. I'll be up the mountain tomorrow morning before work trying to cut my family's red meat needs with venison and my wife gardened about half an acre. We have enough of several staples to last us almost a year with canning and bulk purchasing.

I'm tired, but nearly every major decision I've made since November 2023 has been a hedge against this kind of massive stupidity.

Your wife hates your guts.

She likes to garden and can. The size of the garden was her call. She's planning on a larger garden next year but bigger row spacing so probably about the same yield.

She's also a college professor so its not like its some trad wife nonsense going on.

I know exactly how large a half acre is, and even if you've plotted it out hobby farm style, there is zero chance that your professor wife farms and cans. How do you plan to field dress, (on a mountain) the venison you slay before heading into work? So full of it, you are.

How Iong do you think it takes to field dress a deer? I can be in and out long before I have to be anywhere as long as I don't have to track a wounded animal.

Further, you don't know anything about my work situation other than that I'm a federal employee. You don't know my start time, you don't know how much flexibility I have. And you don't know how much travel time I need to hunt, either.

So, basically, you don't know anything about the situation and still want to run your mouth like a fool.

You're the lying fool me thinks. Insult away, or provide proof. You are a liar.

About 20 minutes or so.

Yeah there's no end to these exurban cowboys who think they can rough it outside of society just because they were moderately good at some other thing. Knew a crapload of those growing up - came in to work at the military base as engineers, scooped up cheap land off retiring farmers to play rustic on the weekend, and inevitably their shoddy attempts at homesteading (a few miles from the Walmart) resulted in a huge empty lawn or a contract farmer coming by and tending it for them.

Lol. "I got my creds watching Yellowstone".

"Honey, can you take the golf cart down to the garbage bin? It's plumb full of everyone's diapers".

"Back off momma, daddy's got some protein hunting up on that ridge, see that ridge"?

"Don't you bring those hooves into my canning kitchen/tiktoc- I warned you"!

"Wimmen- guess I'll head out to my federal job- people like me crapping there. Where are the diapers"?

you did nothing, except expect other people to provide for you…

That's one perspective. It could also be argued that I provide a market for all these farms - if not for me and millions like me they would have no one to buy their products? I could flip round your comment to say - "farmers did nothing, except expect other people to pay their taxes which provide them with subsidy and spend their income to buy their product". We need to get to the point where it is not a them vs us or rural vs urban - we are both dependent on each other and need to stop thinking that victory is for one "side" to be hurt. If farmers are hurting that is bad for me in the long run and vice versa.

Without my money these farmers would be hacking at the dirt with a hoe, scratching out little more than a meager living harvest to harvest.

Combines don't pop up out of the ground and you can't get them for free.

What world do you live in?  Farmers farm.  Doctors doctor, pilots pilot and so on. No average farmer has a farm and doesn’t get supplies and skills from others.  I dunno know about you but I sure as hell am not going to expect a farmer to fly me to Hong Kong or replace my hip.  I’d like to to watch you during heart surgery on yourself!

He seems to think they get their equipment for free and work the soil as charity.

It’s more than that . I was offered a job on a farm that I usually would have done if the pay was right . They offered me a job of all the time I can work but NO overtime pay . Who would work pass 40 hours for just base pay . They are greedy bastards
