so MAGA farmers chased off immigrant farmworkers because Trump said they were taking American jobs, now they can’t find anyone to pick their crops. Funny how the pick-yourselves-up-by-the-bootstraps crowd suddenly needs someone else to do the work

There was this one video of some farm woman complaining about finding workers, and some high school teenager said he'd do it for 20 bucks an hour. She told him to get bent. I guess because nobody wants to work anymore.

I saw that video…. Her reaction says to me that the teen was asking about 10$ too much per hour. For a job she probably used to pay an immigrant $8. But gotta get those useless drags on the economy back to where they come from, right?!?!

I did farm work for 5/hr back 20 years ago and wouldn't do it for 20 now for sure

Her entire farm depended on high school summer workers. When she wanted an actual employee he asked for 20 dollars an hour and she told him to get bent. Then just bitched about how once school starts she’s fucked

That’s one alternative. They had a good thing going with immigrants more than happy to do the work for low wages. Was great for the farmers.

They wanted to ruin that for themselves though… cause they thought all the cool kids were doing it.

This is where critical thinking skills, and being able to think for yourself becomes really important in a democracy.

And this is what happens when you turn your back on education and democracy too for that matter.

You vote to eff yourself, and to enrich tyrants.

If they were exploiting illegal immigrant labor, THEY were the tyrants.

You can calm down. I’m sure that in 99% of cases they were paying $7.25.

So 99% exploiting illegal immigrant labor

They can't, that's why they're in this situation. They never could afford to pay fair wages; farming is hard work and not profitable. That's why it has traditionally relied on cheap labor and financial assistance from the government. So they elected a guy who promised to get rid of both.

I really hate how people see the problem is we now lack slave wages.

This isn't a bad thing, this outcome is a good thing. Farms are either going to have to automate or pay fair wages as determined by the market.

Its an actual job (and a well paying one) to jerk off male Turkeys into a bucket all morning then keep dipping your (gloved) fingers into said bucket and fingerbanging female turkeys all afternoon since we have bred butterball turkeys to be too fat to breed naturally.

There is no job people won't do if the money is right.

What would you define as a “fair wage” for picking produce?

Remember, the more it costs to pick said produce the more expensive it will be for you at the grocery store and restaurant…

Whatever the market works out on its own tbh

I'm sure capitalism has a solution for that.

Oh i see you’re right.  I guess it’s back to exploiting immigrants then

It’s just a question about what base labor costs should be.

There is this thing called “wage inflation” which stipulates that the faster unskilled labor costs increase (and labor in general but unskilled is more important here) the faster inflation accelerates.

We could pay produce pickers $25.00 an hour but that would increase cost on everyone else, which would necessitate the increase in their wages, and thus decrease the value of the dollar/ currency.

There’s a reason why the US (and many other countries) use foreign/ migrant labor for certain purposes and it isn’t to just “take advantage of them”, if anything it’s supposed to be a win-win. The migrant laborer gets to make more money for the same work they would do in their own country and the importing nation gets to keep important commodity prices low for their citizens.

Everything comes at a cost, the question is what can you afford?

What like generally?

I don’t know dude, I didn’t ask to be born. I’m just doing my thing like everyone else.

Or are you asking me why I’m commenting on this post? Same answer I guess. Just doing my thing and trying to help the world be a little less stupid.

Supposedly Reddit is a major source of data for AI training so maybe our future overlords will notice that I’m not a completely useless, stupid human and thus spare me in their coming purge. 😬
