If you'd had government handouts your whole farming life... you'd understand completely.

35

u/Notgreygoddess 1d ago

Yes, not growing crops has been a staple of US farming at least since 1961. Read this from Joseph Heller’s Catch-22:

“Major Major's father was a sober God-fearing man whose idea of a good joke was to lie about his age. He was a long-limbed farmer, a God-fearing, freedom-loving, law-abiding rugged individualist who held that federal aid to anyone but farmers was creeping socialism. He advocated thrift and hard work and disapproved of loose women who turned him down. His specialty was alfalfa, and he made a good thing out of not growing any. The government paid him well for every bushel of alfalfa he did not grow. The more alfalfa he did not grow, the more money the government gave him, and he spent every penny he didn't earn on new land to increase the amount of alfalfa he did not produce. Major Major's father worked without rest at not growing alfalfa. On long winter evenings he remained indoors and did not mend harness, and he sprang out of bed at the crack of noon every day just to make certain that the chores would not be done. He invested in land wisely and soon was not growing more alfalfa than any other man in the county. Neighbors sought him out for advice on all subjects, for he had made much money and was therefore wise. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap,” he counseled one and all, and everyone said, “Amen.”

This book just jumped up to the next book I need to read.

11

u/Thatsgonnamakeamark 1d ago

It was an goodie. I reas it for 8th grade English over summer break, 1973.

Eye-opening.

5

u/Forgetful_Bandit 1d ago

Lucky you. I never read any cool books growing up. I had to seek them out in college and afterwards.

2

u/CoolProtection1432 4h ago

The important things that you had the good sense to seek them out and read them.

I wish I could read it again for the first time.

If you're a fan have you read No Laughing Matter? It's wild. Heller is also in one of my favorite poems, Joe Heller by Vonnegut https://genius.com/Kurt-vonnegut-joe-heller-annotated

They give the farmers crutches after they break the farmer's legs

39

u/mensrea 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not me! I’ve been saying since they made their hatred and lunacy clear during the first Obama administration to just give them what they want. They don’t seem to understand that they’re the ones who are on welfare and dependent upon their roundabouts and high blood pressure medication. If they don’t want healthcare, don’t give it to them.

I feel the same about all of this.

These tractor driving welfare queens don’t understand anything and have been allowed to believe that the others are the problem. So, give them everything they’ve been asking for! If they want survival of the fittest, let’s have that! I don’t think they understand why they’re afraid of brown people. If we’re gonna do jungle rules, let’s do it. You’re not gonna enjoy the outcome!

Some people simply have to learn the hard way.

5

u/Twigsneko 1d ago

I second this. there's some people you can talk to, others you have to be more direct and simplify things for and then there's the ones who only learn through pain. There's a fourth category that should be taken out back but society would have temper tantrums about that

Financial institutions lending to the agriculture sector should prepare now for a continued wave of borrower distress and bankruptcy filings in 2026 and 2027. Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies surged 46% in 2025—yet another annual increase—highlighting the financial struggles facing the industry. USDA forecasts point to another year of compressed margins in 2026, with net farm income dipping to $153.4 billion and sector-wide debt climbing to a record $624.7 billion.

14

u/Apexnanoman 1d ago

After midterms there will be some type of huge bailout for Farmers.

The Democrats will sign off on it. Because they're spineless cowards hoping to get a farmer vote that they're never going to get no matter what.

But in the end farmers that declare bankruptcy still won't lose a damn thing.

3

u/Conscious-Quarter423 1d ago

spineless cowards?

more like the adults in the room.

democrats are the nerds in the room. they are always gonna do the right thing

A bailout should have a condition. Namely, any farmer who takes it agrees to permanently forfeit their right to vote. They've proven time and again that they can't be trusted to vote responsibly, so they shouldn't be allowed to make messes that the rest of us have to clean up.

This is one of the top reasons I haven’t been donating to the
Democratic Party this time. I’m sick of donating and them acting like they will stand up to the fascism and stand strong on principles then buckling the moment things get hard. I’m not donating to keep repeating these cycles where we do the right thing and get perpetually shafted as a result. When the Dems want to stand united and strong, I’m in again. As for now, I’m trying to figure out how to donate directly to Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton without it going thru Act Blue or other general Democrat organizations.

3

u/IsolatedFrequency101 1d ago

Fortunately Vance's company is ready to buy them all up for cents on the dollar.

if you’re a farmer and you vote Republican, you’re an idiot. If you’re a union member and you vote Republican, you’re an idiot.
If you’re a human being and you vote Republican, you’re an idiot

Lol if you think there's gonna be welfare for them.

4

u/thegroovemonkey 1d ago

They can work the fields for Monsanto

4

u/silvercyper 1d ago

If they aren't living under a bridge by then. Red states are notorious for removing voting rights from anyone without a registered address. So we get a two in one deal with this...MAGA lose their farms, then their right to vote.

…Deport their workforce, bankrupt them then buy up their farmland real cheap….👌

10

u/ohgeeeezzZ 1d ago

And theyll still blame Biden/Harris/Hillary/Obama

4

u/Chillow_Ufgreat 1d ago

Why export the crop to China when you could just sell them the whole farm?

24

u/Hiouchi4me 1d ago

They may be seeing it but they’re not changing it.

20

u/Fair_Chemistry_3317 1d ago

Let's not be fooled here. They will vote for Trump and any Republican they can over and over again. They will never learn. Never.

3

u/AlanStanwick1986 16h ago

I live in a city in a red state. Some people get pissed at me when I say rural America is a lost cause but I have all the evidence in the world that it is.

18

u/Dragon_wryter 1d ago

They're waiting for Trump to give them a bunch of black people to work the fields. That's literally what they thought would happen.

14

u/LegitimateDrink2056 1d ago

They burned their hand on the stove. But guess what. They'll never learn and touch it again.

14

u/yeungx 1d ago

Farmers were not fools that vote just because of racism, they are keen political actors that voted for the return of slavery.

Right now normal undocumented worker are freelancers. If they pay is too poor, conditions are too poor, they can just go get a job in the cities. Farmers don't want that. H2A work process ties a documented worker to the specific job, so they have no choice but to put up with whatever working conditions that is provided. They support ICE raid to found up all the free undocumented workers, so their own workers will have fewer other options for employment. When they say they want to keep the good migrants, they mean indentured servants they control.

Farmers are, and always have been keenly aware of their self interest. They only seems foolish because they are hiding their bigger plan. They still support Trump because Trump is pathway by which they can get slavery back. No amount rural investment Democrats was ever going to move the needle. Trump has already removed Biden era protection against human trafficking, reduced the minimum wage, and massively expanded the H2A visa process.

They are only bitching because they hoped the transition in to slavery could be smoother.

7

u/LiftUpTheGood 1d ago

This is why you see them rounding up immigrants but never the people employing them. They want to keep them othered so the can pay them nothing and they have no recourse.

3

u/BookYeti 1d ago

Wouldn't be surprising if the private prison outfits contracted for the purpose start "renting out" "voluntary" labor for the fields at third-world prices, keeping in mind that some already set the standard from the start that a day's worth of "voluntary" work earns them $1.00, but they have to pay for commissary and hygiene items, and phone calls. They'll likely work out of desire for something to occupy the time and to make their living experience tolerable.

4

u/INITMalcanis 1d ago

They're bitching because they thought the plan was for them to own the slaves, and now they're realising it wasn't and isn't.

3

u/Conscious-Quarter423 1d ago

they’ll only remember as long as their personal pain last… then they’ll return to their ignorance

3

u/Own-Smile-912 18h ago

This. They want to defund HBCUs and fire black people from white collar jobs to force them into returning to low paying jobs with terrible conditions or on farms as indentured workers. Some farmers say it out right because they’re not mad at Trump, they’re mad that black and brown people aren’t running to work in their fields for free.

2

u/Adigrat96 1d ago

Well said

2

u/Altruistic_Repeat779 11h ago

If Dems would just say this part out loud! Spell it out and stop leading with the “hopey changey” shit. People listen when you take aim at other’s shortcomings. This is what the GOP have been doing so why not toughen up and grow a spine. I swear if I hear “we need to get back to focusing on creating jobs and providing affordable housing” I will give up all hope.

2

u/yeungx 10h ago

100%. the flaw of the dems is they believe farmers are dumb "low information" voters. So if we just educate them, surely they will see the light of liberal democracy. They don't realize farmers are smart, and always have been. The things they say are carefully engineer rhetoric to string you along.

In their hearts, they want slavery back, and they know dems are never gonna give you that. Trump was the only one willing to show he is racist enough to bring slavery back, and they is why he beat everyone else. No amount of tax break or rural investment was ever gonna move the needle, when the other side promises the return of slavery.

12

u/Lord_Dingus83 1d ago

I feel like a very small percentage of farmers may actually realize and stop voting republican. But I think it is happening.

39

u/TheSilverFoxwins 1d ago

9

u/Fair_Chemistry_3317 1d ago

Those were the times. One MAGA farmer said he misses Biden ... He sure does.

10

u/Common-Ad6470 1d ago

Thing is they might stop voting Republican, but there’s no way they’re voting Dem, and that is the problem.

3

u/iwaseatenbyagrue 1d ago

If they stop voting republican that is still a step. Only half as good as voting Democrat, but it still takes a vote away from the GOP.

2

u/Brodman1986 1d ago

There are blue dot farmers, they are a minority, if it gets bad enough they may become the majority. Im looking at iowa over the next few years.

1

u/adeniumlover 1d ago

It's not happening.

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 1d ago

just show them more images of rolling fields with flags waving and Lee Greenwood crooning, they'll vote GOP again. Bunch of emotionally misguided patriots

1

u/atomic__balm 21h ago

They vote for the interest of their class, farmers are the petit-bourgeoisie not the proletariat, unfortunately both parties are apathetic to the plight of the proles

1

u/hammlanc 3h ago

I live in a community of farmers in Upstate NY— they (among others in differing industries) are about to elect a super-Trumpy MAGA douche named Anthony Constantino in NY’s 21st district. At least in my corner of the world, they aren’t learning a damn thing… they’ll vote for a guy who has (R) next to his name even in spite of inflation, tariffs, diesel hikes, loss of business with Canada (which borders the 21st).

Cognitive dissonance + Fox News is a hell of a drug.

10

u/SirIll1219 1d ago

And learning nothing. They'll keep voting republican.

36

u/TheSilverFoxwins 1d ago

8

u/Common-Ad6470 1d ago

This is the truth.
Putin can’t believe his luck that MAGA were dumb enough to vote his dumbest agent into the White House…🤔

7

u/TheSilverFoxwins 1d ago

All this started in the 80's with multiple trips to Russia and financial bailouts and loans for the stable genius. Those bankrupt casinos were money laundering venues for his comrades.

2

u/seriouslythisshit 16h ago

It's good to see your last sentence, as it is probably the biggest blind spot Americans have, when it comes to the Trump and his handler, Putin. When the Soviet Union collapsed, newly hatched oligarchs robbed the place blind. They needed a money launderer who was located in the heart of the country with the most desirable currency, the USA. Trump was a big mouthed, semi-successful jackass from NYC. They teamed up with him to launder their dirty looted assets using his casinos. They couldn't process the volume they wanted so they got in bed with the Donald on all kinds of real estate deals in NYC, overpaying by huge amounts for new apartments. This criminal activity went on for decades. Trump is absolutely NOT a failed casino owner, or a failed real estate mogul, he is a wildly successful criminal money launderer for foreign oligarchs.

He misses the game, and wants as much money as he can possibly grab before his wildly successful overthrow of the federal government collapses. As a result, he is working with a new, young oligarch who has been looting Venezuela for years now. That guy in Alejandro Betancourt. They worked hand in hand, as Betancourt literally spent the night of the illegal capture of Maduro, working the phones with Trump and Maduro, to complete the coup and steal the oil for Trump and himself.

8

u/naptown-hooly 1d ago

Tired of seeing these articles. Until they vote differently I don't believe it. Just media trying get people complacent.

6

u/RS_Annika_Kamil 1d ago

And I'm still pissed off at the farmers for thinking that they can exploit people who have no other choices.

Pay people what the work is worth.

Most farms are owned by corporate billionaires so just stop pretending that this is about small farmers.

1

u/seriouslythisshit 16h ago

Yes and no. Most farms are owned by corporations. Most of those that control those corporations are both family farmers and financially secure millionaires. The well curated myth of the "struggling family farmer" is exactly that. The very knowledgeable female farmer and economist who runs the "Farm to tabor" Youtube site does a lot of in depth coverage of all this, and gets right to the reality of modern American farming, with zero bullshit.

7

u/Mean-Cheesecake-2635 1d ago

Deport their workforce AND destroy the export markets many of them grow crops for AND increase their input costs for fuel and fertilizer AND completely ignore climate change that’s directly affecting the viability of their land AND not do anything about corporate takeover of US farms.

13

u/williamgman 1d ago

They aren't.

14

u/SimilarYard9840 1d ago

When they are about to criticize him, they start with so many qualifiers to prove that they’re still loyal. It’s a straight up cult.

10

u/Big_Old_Sock 1d ago edited 1d ago

Or they say something "happened". Like it's mysterious. "We can't find anyone to pick our crops". "The market for soybeans is bad." "Diesel is $6.00" No mention of how that happened.

Then they move on to free stuff: "We are going to need help to survive." "We need a farm bill." ...

11

u/williamgman 1d ago

One disappointed guy who identified as MAGA now says he's not even a conservative now... but simply a Christian. And then says "both sides are the same". That cognitive dissonance is solid.

3

u/Efficient_Smilodon 1d ago

"look i love the guy , he's the best murderous liar we've had since Andrew Jackson was in charge, but he is hurting the wrong people a bit more than he should. Just a little bit. "

3

u/baconator1988 1d ago

Farmers voted for this. From page 296 of Project 2025.

Reform Farm Subsidies. Subsidies should not influence planting decisions, discourage proper risk management and innovation, incentivize planting on environmentally sensitive land, or create barriers to entry for new farmers. Farm subsidies can lead to these market distortions and therefore, it would hardly be controversial to ensure that any subsidy scheme should be designed to avoid such problems.

The overall goal should be to eliminate subsidy dependence. Despite what might be conventional wisdom, many farmers receive few to no subsidies, 31 with most subsidies going to only a handful of commodities. According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), from 2014 to 2016, 94 percent of farm program went to just six commodities—corn, cotton, peanuts, rice, soybeans, and wheat—that together account for only 28 percent of farm receipts.

Although many farmers do not receive much in the way of subsidies, especially those in the areas of livestock and specialty crops (fruit, vegetable, and nuts), there are still a significant number of farmers growing row crops like corn and cotton that do receive significant farm subsidies.

2

u/wellwood_allgood 1d ago

Probably one of the few pages from that book that actually makes sense.

2

u/ambientocclusion 1d ago

Oh no, “market distortions”! Wouldn’t want a government that causes those!

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 1d ago

fool me about 3754 times shame on me I guess but give me subsidies

2

u/GreatPlainsFarmer 1d ago

Why would anyone object to that first paragraph that you quoted?

I’d support that paragraph all the way.

1

u/baconator1988 1d ago

It's anti-climate and environment change language. They're saying farmers shouldn't be concerned how their corp growing paractices effect the climate or environment.

1

u/GreatPlainsFarmer 1d ago

Subsidies should not . . . incentivize planting on environmentally sensitive land,

Come again?

2

u/baconator1988 1d ago

Some farmers are paid to not grow crops in areas that the pesticide runoff polutes the water supply. They want to end the subsidies and allow them to plant on this sensitive land is one example.

u/Rattus_NorvegicUwUs 1d ago

Let them lose their farms.

Farmers will never learn, so I’d rather have fewer farmers.

Only 10% of food grown in America is consumed by Americans. Blue states essentially pay red states to subsidize Chinese farmers. But I’m not seeing a return on investment.

1

u/LimitSeveral9058 1d ago

No they're not but watching them freak out is delicious

1

u/WereDoomed26 1d ago

Uhhhhh they finally came to the realization? Trump ran 3 times on wanting to deport virtually any non whites and NOW they’re coming to the realization? Can’t we just call the farmers exactly what they are which are stupid?

1

u/upfromashes 1d ago

Deport their workforce? Sure, not contesting that, but what about bankrupting them so oligarchs can buy up farmers' holdings on the CHEAP.

1

u/scruffywarhorse 1d ago

I knew a conservative dairy farmer. Voted for Trump outspoken about following those values… Lost his farm and soon after died probably from lack of purpose. The sad and odd thing is people won’t see the connection.

Anyone that believes farmers are going Democrat is delusional. Sad but true.

1

u/PNWFlyingSaucer 1d ago

They’re losing their farms, and little do they realize, once those farmlands go into foreclosure, those same politicians that they voted for and the millionaires/billionaires are going to buy the land for pennies on the dollar.

Yet they’re going to vote for those same politicians AGAIN! 🤨

u/Sure-Coffee-8241 1d ago

They are blaming everything else under the sun for it though, they will never actually learn.

1

u/Ill-Egg-491 1d ago

Maga farmers have a serious pr problem now .

1

u/Ryumancer 1d ago

No they aren't. Really tired of these copium-based headlines. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/Jiggle_Tester 1d ago

If a Dem wins presidency they need to let the farmers enjoy the situation their beloved MAGA hero president put them in and just import all our stuff from friendly countries, it will probably be cheaper anyways.

1

u/Ok-Serve-4726 1d ago

Problem is if they are on bread lines, who is growing the wheat for the bread?

1

u/7ECA 1d ago

At best they'll stay home. They'll never vote for a Dem even though they'd actually help them. Idiots

1

u/Burnt_and_Blistered 1d ago

And they’ll do it again.

1

u/D0nCoyote 1d ago

Unfortunately, seeing and learning from are two entirely separate entities

1

u/kent18328 1d ago

No and no

1

u/Recent_Fisherman311 1d ago

Many, many of them are not intelligent. I mean that seriously. Lack of a good education and not getting out much will do that.

1

u/mike194827 1d ago

And made diesel prices skyrocket.

1

u/Main_Tap6354 1d ago

1

u/Luzdesolamarelo 1d ago

No they aren't. You are just seeing ones that are. I promise you, they will vote for him anyway

1

u/canned-yams123 1d ago

Republicans cannot pass a simple cause and effect kindergarten class.

1

u/Danni_Les 1d ago

They only see 'consequences' because it's affecting them so much.
I think if they're given another chance to vote, they'd still go back and vote against themselves. Mainly due to the fact that they're brainwashed, voted for the same idiot two times (three if you count 2020) who said what he was going to do, and lack critical thinking where they'd rather 'win' against libs than admit they were wrong.

u/Above-Bored 1d ago

Driving from sacramento to San Diego I see miles and miles of signs I AM PAYING for spouting this MAGA garbage. I just want someone to cut off the water and send to people who deserve it. F@&$ their almond farms sucking up all the water.

1

u/fistoic 1d ago

they arent

1

u/Conscious_Bat4910 1d ago

I'm never buying us farm products again, we are willing to pay to establish farms around the world that will provide products that help other countries economy's flourish. America poked the finger one to many times. Now I had enough. Enjoy.......going bankrupt . Why should I buy American when I can get it cheaper elsewhere and more reliable without being taunted. Australia wines, southern African, French, Chinese, Japanese whiskey mmmmmm so many flavors to savor. No longer need that Jack. Bon appetite

1

u/rubyspicer 1d ago

Insert cartmanlaugh dot mp4

1

u/rg2004 1d ago

So the way its going, the corporations will be buying out the remainder of the farms. What's the plan thereafter? Socialize them? Who will run them?

1

u/monotremai 1d ago

Can someone share the content behind the paywall, or am I the only that doesn't pay for esquire

1

u/meglon978 1d ago

Sadly they're not understanding that Trump is only one cog in the fascist republican machine. They'll still vote for the other fucks who are screwing up the country.

1

u/Fun_Trick2172 1d ago

Bullshit they are lol.

1

u/Frequent-Expert-3589 22h ago

They wont understand till the police are putting their belongings on the street. Cant save some ppl🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/Mouatmoua 22h ago

No they haven’t. I almost with trump stays in office until he completely destroys the farmers lol

1

u/Dr_SlapsMD 19h ago

Its almost as if supporting a felonous, pedophile, scamming, draft dodging, bigoted, lying, corrupt, silver spooned, orange makeup wearing, imbecilic, mouth breathing fucking moron because you think he cares about you was a bad plan.

All they saw was "white man" and concluded that was the only ingredient necessary for success.

Part of me actually kinda loves how clearly Trump/Maga has proven "white = right" philosophy is utter horseshit. Their self inflicted deep suffering almost makes the high gas worth it. 🤣

1

u/Own-Smile-912 18h ago

Ironically, Iran may save American democracy in the long run by forcing us to reckon with dependence on oil, cheap labor, and MAGA.

1

u/amboomernotkaren 17h ago

If you’ve ever been to California or Oregon you can see all the migrant farm workers are not white people. Just brown folks working their butts off for very little money. We were up in Northern Cali and Southern Oregon and used the laundry mat and hit up Walmart a bunch of times and everyone in those places is spending the money they earned working in the fields, driving the machines, etc. Without them, production grinds to a halt. At my own job we cannot hire any cleaning folks, security guards, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, etc. they are afraid or non-existent. A very simple immigration bill would fix all this.

1

u/SunshineDewdrops 15h ago

We told you so!

1

u/frank_davisdixie109 15h ago

Fuck those simple rubes. China will own those farms some enough

1

u/crow-party-13 13h ago

"I still support you and what you're doing." is a mantra of a LOT of these farmers. They still are locked in to the propaganda machines and they are posting on social media about things falling apart in the outlandishly ridiculous hope that somehow it's just that Trump doesn't "know" what's going on and maybe their little social media post addressing Trump directly will somehow be seen by someone, anyone, that can get their message to their incredible president so that he can understand what's happening. The parts they can't get to is simple, though: (1) They cannot and never will admit their have any view of the world that is wrong. (2) They are genuinely confused that Trump doesn't care about them. (3) They honestly believe Trump has it in himself to care about them (or other people at all) if only he knew how bad they are suffering.

They ALL say it over and over again in damn near every one of these videos. You can see that they will never admit being wrong (some do, and good for them, but percentage-wise it's small who really have that come-to-god moment). They stand firm on their racism and anti-progressive stances. They refuse to expand their education or their sources for their information beyond what reinforces their existing ideas and beliefs. They are conservative in the "Things should run like they've always run and it should always result in me benefitting from things running like they've always run. If anything, I should benefit more and more as time passes!" They are not conservatives like the politicians that they vote for, who give zero fucks about them and are in office to either profit as much as possible, or to move a fascist ideology forward at ANY cost, including the cost of destroying their constituents.
