Meta What to Watch/Recommend a Kamen Rider - 2025 Megathread

This is a long overdue thread, but one of the most common posts the subreddit gets is; ”where do I start with Kamen Rider?”, “what Kamen Rider show do I watch next”, and the likes of those.

This thread going forward for the year 2025 will be the megathread for answering and posting those questions. While this thread won’t be going through every single season in the series's 50+ years long run, it will give you the basics to find a show to start with.

Proceed at your own risk: Spoilers for shows don’t need to be tagged inside this thread and no posting links to illegal download/stream of shows.

2026 Thread

Showa era; The 70s was a booming era in post-WWII Japan, while the shows may seem dated by today’s effect and techniques, there is a charm and appreciation to them

With his sanity and moral conscience intact, Takeshi wages a one-man war against Shocker's minions as the grasshopper-themed cyborg superhero “Kamen Rider”.

Kamen Rider Kuuga - The 1st series of Heisei. After returning from a 10+ years hiatus, Kamen Rider Kuuga is Kamen Rider at its basic with a return to form, but with modern updates. Yusuke Godai’s journey from a carefree individual to a determined and selfless hero is the heart of the series, and his struggles against the ancient Grongi monsters create a compelling narrative that resonates with themes of identity, morality, and responsibility, marks a perfect return and start to a new era of Kamen Rider for all to enjoy.

Kamen Rider Kabuto - How do you define cool? Well if you were to take out a dictionary and look it up, you’ll find an image of Soji Takeru, the main protagonist of Kamen Rider Kabuto. Kamen Rider Kabuto is a show that deals with destiny and human nature, all while having to deal with an alien invasion.

Kamen Rider Den-O - What happens when a Stand User gets access to a TARDIS? You get Kamen Rider Den-O. Ryotaro Nogami is an unlucky, timid, and often easily frightened young man. Ryotaro is the heart of the show, and his growth as a person is central to the series’ themes of friendship, growth, and the impact of time.

Follow the adventures of Shotaro and Phillp as they fight, unravel the dark secret, and confront a greater conspiracy that threatens the beautiful windy city of Futo.

Kamen Rider Fourze - In contrast to past seasons, Kamen Rider Fouze has a high schooler as its main protagonist who only wants one thing; to be your friend. Kamen Rider Fourze provides a nice change of pace from previous seasons by going for a more youthful slice of life with its storytelling. Through the show and the school year, Kamen Rider Fourze’s infectious enthusiasm strikes a balance between high-energy action and deeper, more emotional storytelling about friendship, growth, and the responsibilities of being a hero.

Kamen Rider Gaim - From the genius mind of Gen Urobuchi, he manages to do the impossible, having break dancing ties to the origin story of Adam and Eve. Set in a world of fruit-themed warriors, Kamen Rider Gaim stands out for its unique blend of action, drama, and philosophical themes, with a narrative that tackles issues like power, freedom, and the consequences of choice. All your favorite Gen Urobuchi’s tropes are here, everything you expect, will happen, but not in the way you think.

Best one for a newbie to start with

Hii! So I've watched Power Rangers near to my whole life and with it having gone so long without a new season, I was thinking of trying Kamen Rider and the other Toku shows like Sentai.

I have no idea where to start though. Should I just start at the beginning? I also really enjoy when the female characters are just as important as the male characters. I know that Kamen Rider is predominantly a male focused series but I wouldn't mind watching a few season with strong female Riders too.

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. 😊 And I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful day/night!

The best one to start with right now in my opinion is the current season Kamen Rider ZEZTZ!

Zeztz is Kamen Rider's latest attempt at a global expansion, so the season is designed for new viewers to jump in without having to know about any tropes or history. Best part yet, i think the show's really good so far, speaking as someone who has seen a lot of these shows.

Sadly, there's not a lot of female Kamen Rider characters in these shows, but the one that stand out the most to me in recent years is in Kamen Rider Geats!! Another great season that you can watch.

If you don't mind committing piracy, then i would also suggest Kamen Rider W! It's one of my favorite seasons, and it was so successful it even got a sequel anime. (I can help you commit piracy if you'd like)

I appreciate your comment. I was beginning to think no one checked these. Unfortunately, waiting for an answer wasn't working for me. So I ended up doing some research on my own and decided to start in the Heisei Period with Kuuga. I've been binging it pretty hard and I'm now in the middle of episode 30.

I'm also sailing the digital seas, so to speak. Found what appears to be a reliable site. My only concern moving forward is where to put each Special and Movie during my watch through.

Yeah, barely anyone read this thread... except me of course!. If you've been paying attention to other comment, you'll see that i have been putting in extra work around here lol.

Kamen Rider Kuuga is a great pick! It would have been my 4th recommendation to you but i was afraid that i was rambling too much. Do note that if you live in certain regions, Kamen Rider Kuuga is available officially on TokuSHOUTsu! So pls support the official release if you can.

Luckily for Kuuga, you don't have to worry about movies or specials because Kuuga is the only one that didn't have any. The only "special" that Kuuga has is KR Kuuga episode 50, which is just a mini episode of the cast messing around doing skits. If you can find it then it's a fun thing to watch, of you can't then it's fine.

For the movies and specials from other series, you can look up the Rider wiki and look for the movies and specials section. If it gets confusing at any point, you're welcome to ask me! I'd love to answer any questions you have about Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and even Tokusatsu in general.

Oh and also check out Kamen Rider ZEZZT, it's really good.

I checked and I don't think I can watch it on that Site. If there was a more readily available way to watch the official releases and support them internationally, I totally would. But unfortunately, there's a very limited selection of KR on Streaming Services where I live.

As for the movies and specials side of things- I did read that there's an HBV called Kamen Rider Kuuga vs. the Strong Monster Go-Jiino-Da. Supposedly I was supposed to watch it between episodes 30 and 31 but the episode I just watched just showcased the Rising Mighty that the HBV was supposed to debut. So honestly, I'm really confused.

So basically, the Hyper Battle DVD special was made for the Televi-Kun magazine (if you bought the magazine you get the DVD), and at the time of Kuuga it was just extra content that affects very little to the main show.

Eventually the later HBVs becomes a really funny extra episode of the show, so you should definitely watch the later ones. But as for Kuuga rn, all you need to watch is just the main show, everything else is barely canon.

Just finished Kuuga. I kind of hated the ending, ngl. About to start Agito.
