Opinion Evolution of Hindu Nationalism
A mere conjecture: Hinduism is an ancient religion whose scriptures were written long ago and which possesses a substantial philosophical foundation. Yet, over time, it came to become increasingly exclusionary and closed. Its practices became indigenous, local, and fragmented. Certain folk practices were incorporated and eventually came to be regarded as religion itself. In essence, therefore, it never acquired the codified nature that Islam did.
Exclusion and claims of supremacy made it even more redundant, while its liberal and receptive foundations never allowed a clergy to fully define or control the religion. Later, however, it became largely exclusionary, classist, and supremacist, while folklore and popular practices continued to exist for ordinary people. There was no comparable renaissance or emancipation that, even in a limited sense, the religion usually provides to the common people.
At the same time, its liberal and non-codified character allowed it to undergo a multitude of transitions. These transitions were never completely uniform, however; rather, they remained fragmented. Once a particular transition became established, it could never be accepted unilaterally.
Religion also did not become the principal rallying cry after the British invasion and subsequent colonial rule. There was occasional use of religious imagery, but religion was not employed as centrally as it was by Muslim populations in various other parts of the world in their struggles against colonialism. The Indian struggle against colonial rule was, to a significant extent, articulated by rationalist, secular, and culturally Hindu intellectuals and political figures of the period.
The Hindu right-wing movement's failure to provide an intellectual framework for resistance to colonialism contributed to its insecurity and radicalisation. While every religion can inspire bias, exclusion, and the othering of non-believers or outsiders, the right-wing movement increasingly placed disproportionate emphasis on the foreign Other rather than on developing its own intellectual conception of the state, economy, religion, society, and political freedom.
Its failure to provide an intellectual framework for the emerging modern state, economy, society, and freedom struggle further radicalised it. The treatment it subsequently received from the institutions and political ecosystem of the new state contributed to a sense of alienation and stagnation.
When it eventually achieved political power, however, it possessed relatively little intellectual investment in academia or in developing a coherent vision of the state, economy, society, or religion. Its politics often remained hollow at the core, echoing an idealised mythological past without making a sustained effort to translate that past into a coherent programme for the present. It became increasingly preoccupied with power, patronage, resentment, and hostility toward Muslims, almost like a zombie that knows only how to run and bite.

Discussion The Mint article calculates fall in UPI transaction value from 1st half to 2nd half of September incorrectly. Instead of using first half of the month as the denominator, they used the second half of the month as the denominator.
This basic arithmetic error is why their fall percent is 17% instead of the 14% we calculated.
