Angry is bit of a stretch. I’ve had people telling others I’m from west Africa because they thought “Ghana”. It just leads to confusion.

Because when I was in grade 2 the teacher asked where everyone was from and I said Guyana and she proceeded to point out Ghana on the map and I was like “no, no, GUYANA” to which she didn’t know where it was so I had to go up to the map and point it out for the class to see. In Canada btw

Same exact thing happened to my sister to the point that, before you said Canada, I wondered if my sister had made a Reddit account lol.

I believe the anger/annoyance might come from the fact that people are confusing countries that are on two different continents and across the ocean from them. Guyana is it’s own country, with its own diaspora and history.

Always the same conversation. “Guyana ? Where is that? Africa? I never heard of if it.”

“You ever heard of Jim jones? Don’t drink the koolaid”

Hehe. I used to get upset when I say my roots are from Guyana and they misheard it as from Ghana. I remember one situation when the person thought I said Ghana and went on a 5 minute spiel about Africa. I entertained him for a while until I corrected him a few minutes later. I said Guyana not Ghana! And then they confess, they’ve never heard of it, nor knew where it was on a map 🤦‍♂️.

I also remember my Mum, who was from Georgetown was a very proud Guyanese, and would become indignant when people were ignorant. She moved to the UK in the 1960s. Most English people have heard of the Caribbean but knew only of Jamaica so they assumed everyone was from there. I never seen her get so irate in a split second when someone asked her if she was Jamaican? That’s the wrong thing to say to a Guyanese or in fact any islander. Each one are very proud of their roots and identity. ‘What??’ I heard her loudly exclaim. ‘Do I sound like a Jamaican? I’m from British Guyana! Can’t you tell the difference?’

That’s one of my abiding memories of my mother from childhood as she was a small woman, only 5ft4 and usually softly spoken but she certainly wasn’t that day. 😛

unsavable honestly. if you get the change to go to the US, UK or Canada take it and never look back. if you're stuck here align yourself with the govt and try to make something for yourself and your loved ones.

Country is linked to identity. Everyone gets a bit annoyed when they're misidentified. Like calling Bob "Bib".

because

Back in the 60's and 70's and even 80s some people would take forever to get their mail because it was sent to Ghana. They then had make sure they put the South America as part of the address to make sure it wasn't sent there.
