Now I feel the Google 'trap' - new Google One plans

I believe the plans changed last year and I'd been on a 1 year trial of some sort.
I'd been paying about £80 a year for 2TB Drive space and a good amount of Google Home camera history. Now I discover my camera history has gone to 3 hours max.

I have a Google Drive full of photos etc so I need my 2TB of space - and I of course want more than 3 hours of camera history.

So they've trapped me into needing to buy an upgraded Google AI Plus (5 TB) plan for both of those benefits... it's an extra £110 a year.

I see what people mean now about how they feel trapped by Google. I guess I'll have to start moving away from the Google ecosystem as I have no doubt the prices are only going to slowly increase further from here.

Does anyone actually prefer using the wheel? It feels impossible to get the basic colors I want.

Bug How the hell do I call a scene with a button?

Is Google home just a social experiment to see how shitty and incomprehensible you can make a product?

* The old automation editor lets me add scenes but doesn't show my buttons available as triggers

* The new automation editor lets me add buttons as triggers but won't let me call scenes

* The script editor lets me call scenes but I can't find any reference to button triggers- not supported?

* The automations I create with the new editor in the app don't even show up on the website at all- so I can't create an automation with the new editor and view it as a script to see what the trigger is called.

How is this so absurdly terrible?

Not Happy With Google's/Gemini's Response?

Yeah, I know the answer to that lol. I get a few replies that I know are wrong and/or not even on topic. It's rare tho. But when I do, I can train Google/Gemini to understand that's wrong and tell it the right answer. If it doesn't stick the first time, try again. Do you use the feedback feature? That helps too. I know I'm going to get replies saying something along the lines of "I shouldn't have to do that!" Maybe not but you can be mad and not fix the issue or you can be mad and FIX the problem (and then be happy) :) The system is not perfect. We all know it. Be proactive and help train it. For example, Gemini kept giving me weather info for the town my IP is in, not where I live. After correcting Gemini two times, (I don't live in xxx, I live in xxx), it corrected it's self. Not all incorrect replies can be corrected but a lot can. And use that feedback option!

Give away Nest w/o reset

We upgraded our Nest thermostats last year due to Google ending app connectivity. I just gave away the old thermostats on marketplace without factory resetting. Now I am a little paranoid. Does Nest have our wifi passwords? Do we need to change our wifi password? I couldn’t find the old Nest in Google Home and am not sure how to unlink them. Could someone help me explain whether I need to worry about it? Thank you so very much!

Phone controls the volume of house minis and Hub display

I have a number of Google mini speakers and a nest hub display on my house that I play music on. I always ask the device itself to play music but then the volume seems to be controlled through my phone.

ie. my young son plays music while he's falling asleep and I am watching a video on my phone and try to turn the volume up it turns the volume up on his speaker like it's casting from my phone.

How do I keep the speakers completely separate from my phone?

Hope that all makes sense.

Help I Have a Favor to Ask

If you have more than one Nest Hub Max, would you please let me know if you can view one of the Hubs from the other one? I have 3 Hub Max devices. I used to be able to say, for instance, "Hey Google, show me the kitchen" or "show me bedroom 2". Can't do it anymore. I had to redo ALL my IOTs when I got a new router (long story, don't ask...sigh). Only one Nest Hub Max will show up in the GH app. The others work but they can't see each other like before because they won't install in the GH app. There is a tile where they should be but it says they are offline. They aren't. Maybe you could let me know if you've ever run into the issue of the GH Hub Max not showing up in the GH app. I've even uninstalled the app and reinstalled it. Thanks

Bug Google Home "What happened today" feature consistently misreports animals in my yard

So I do like the "What happened today" feature for my security cameras for Gemini, it's mostly accurate.

But.

It is absolutely bloody horrible at animals.

We have a Wallaby that is basically living on our farm, so much so we've called him Wally.

He got himself hurt one day and we got the vet out, got him patched up, now he hangs around.

The system consistently, constantly says he's a kangaroo.

No matter how many times and ways I tell it he's a Wallaby, it thinks he's a kangaroo.

We also have a Kookaburra that often comes around, but the system calls him an Eagle. No idea where it gets that from.

The one day we had a Wedge Tailed Eagle land in our yard, I was stoked! Gemini called it a "Large Parrot"...yep...a parrot that could eat your dog...

It also considers sulphur crested arseholes cockatoos to be parrots

How do I get it to identify animals better?

Other Duplicate installation

Not sure if this is a bug issue or what but I can't seem to resolve the problem. When I connect/link to Google home the app creates two instances of the setup and the smart tv device does not respond correctly to the commands sent to it by the home device. When I tell Google home to turn off the tv it mutes it. When I tell it to turn on the TV it does nothing.

Continued Conversation

Why would I turn this on? Ever since Google Assistant was trashed I have to slowly enunciate every word to get Gemini to do the simplest things. Now when I start talking to one hub it will suddenly switch to one in another room.

Tips FYI: I "upgraded" to Gemini, now my alarm clock spies on me

A google home update in mid-sept killed the temp display on my alarm clock (lenovo cd-4n341y). When the home app updated recently, I allowed it to do the gemini 'upgrade' in hopes it would restore it. It didn't, and now basic assistant functionally is... quirky, to say the least (i.e. telling me it's currently 86 degrees when it was actually 52, asking if I want to hear Olivia Rodrigo's high-energy pop-punk or wistful piano-driven ballads when I ask it to play music, even though I've never heard this woman in my life). Many of these quirks are the subject of many other's posts.

So there's no temperature on the display anymore, and the assistant sucks. But the thing that really gave me pause is the fact I was constantly seeing the 'listening' indicator illuminated, even though no one said anything phonetically near "hey google"

For the record, I opted out of 'continue conversation'. In fact, this morning the home app updated and it immediately pestered me about enabling 'continue conversation' once again. Again, I declined. Ten minutes later I notice the clock listening to a conversation about bus schedules.

While I'm sure it's probably just collecting data to train it's faulty AI, the fact that they give you the illusion of opting out, then just do it anyway, really irritates me. I'm sure there's something buried in the TOS that states this is perfectly legal, or it's merely a 'bug', regardless...

Personally, I pitched the clock. Gemini will be well trained to the workings of a landfill. But I figured I'd write a quick PSA

Help So Google home can control my Google TV volume and turn it on and off but it says it can't open YouTube on it because it's not connected

for some reason it can turn it on and off and turn the volume up and down. But when I ask it to do something else it says it doesn't have a connection.

What gives?

Google aHome's: "Sorry I don't understand"

Hello!
Dilemma: My original Google Home has started acting up. It has often now been answering to very simple questions with “Sorry, I don’t understand,” even though Google "My Activity" shows that it transcribed my question correctly.
It has also literally been ignoring my “Hey Google, stop” while playing something until I loose my cool and have to literally shout out to it
The weirdest part: the Google Home app shows the speaker as Offline, even though it’s clearly connected and responding.
I’ve already rebooted it and confirmed Bluetooth and Local Network permissions are ON. No change. I haven’t factory-reset it yet.

Has anyone had this combination of problems with an original Google Home and found a fix? If so, please help me out 😉

Casting onto Nest Hub Max

Finally Google seems to have fixed a long pending bug!! I am able to finally cast my audible listen on my phone to my hub. For all the noise on google home here including my own, I tip my hat to Google in getting this to work.

Google home mini volume?

Got a new wifi router so I had to hard reset everything. But now when I ask Google to volume up or down it tells "use a remote to adjust volume see Chromecast settings for more options", is there any way to control the volume on the device I'm talking to?

Bug Timers are getting worse

In the last few days, we noticed that our Nest Hub keeps forgetting timers. When we set a timer, it appears on the screen, but after a few minutes, it disappears without any notification. Have you noticed the same issue?

Nest Hub malfunctioning when idle

Over the past few days, my Nest Hub gen 2 started frequently going to the setup screen, then reconnecting. Overnight, it just goes to a black screen. The volume buttons still make a beep, but nothing else works. I can ping the device when this happens. I have to unplug it to get it working again. I tried a factory reset, but it didn't fix it.

Then I noticed if I'm playing music or using it as a bluetooth speaker, it's fine. I left Youtube music playing for hours on end yesterday. It was absolutely fine. I stopped the music when I went to bed. As soon as it went back to the slideshow, it started acting up again. Black screen again when I woke up.

I only use this device as a photo frame with weather. I don't use the voice assistant or microphone at all. So this is essentially a brick at the moment.

Bug Personal Results Proactively Displayed on Nest Hub

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have personal results set to not show information proactively on my Nest Hub. This has worked as expected for a long time but recently it has started proactively showing tasks that I have in Google Tasks. Has anyone else noticed this? Sometimes I have personal information in Google Tasks and don't want it to be proactively displayed on this Google Nest Hub. I just notified the Google Home development team via the "Send Feedback" menu in the Google Home Android app. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

Bug I think Google has changed subscription levels

For the past 2 years I've been paying for 2tb ai plus. As of 2pm today my doorbell has stopped saving video footage.

Additionally, as of today my bank transaction has change from "Google storage" to "Google one"

I believe Google has changed its ai plus model tk no longer include Google home aware without telling us, and trying to charge us more for the privilege.

The new subscription is called "ai pro" which says it includes home aware at a much higher price.
