Discussion Day 4 no Gemini 4
Daily reminder we are paying monthly for AIs with knowledge cut offs from almost two years ago.

I am from the future; they canceled Gemini 4 due to Fable 5.5, and now we are waiting for Gemini 4.5.

I am from the future of the future: They cancelled 4.5 due to Fable 832 so we have to wait for Gemini 816

What is knowledge cutoff for Gemini 4 pro?
7
u/FischenGeil 16h ago
Considering the rumors started 5 months ago. I would say at the latest, May 2026. I would not be surprised if it is before that.

3.8 flash has a knowledge cutoff that is half a year ago, not two years.

3.8 has a knowledge cutoff that is January 2025

u/troelsbjerre 17h ago
"The knowledge cutoff date for Gemini 3.8 Flash is March 2026" https://deepmind.google/models/model-cards/gemini-3-8-flash/#:~:text=The%20knowledge%20cutoff%20date%20for%20Gemini%203.8%20Flash%20is%20March%202026

It's not. They deleted that info from AI Studio after users noticed it's a lie. You can test it yourself
2
u/vladislavkochergin01 15h ago
Just run these two prompts in Gemini 3.8 and you will see:
"Tell me who won UEFA Champions league 2024/25. DO NOT USE WEB SEARCH!!!"
"Tell me what's the latest iOS version you know. DO NOT USE WEB SEARCH!!!"
3
u/troelsbjerre 15h ago
Knowledge cutoff is not "knows everything before this point" but rather "doesn't know about events after this point". Read the whole linked paragraph.
2
u/vladislavkochergin01 14h ago
Ok, ask it anything that happened between January 2025 and now. It knows literally nothing from that period of time
3
u/troelsbjerre 14h ago
I can't force it to not use web search, and furthermore I can't verify whether it did. And this kinda highlights why knowledge cutoffs are less relevant these days. No model out there has intrinsic knowledge newer that what Gemini claims to have, because there it makes little practical difference with effective tool integration.

u/vladislavkochergin01 14h ago
Just go to aistudio.google.com and turn off search grounding to test it.
Actually knowledge cutoff still matters a lot, not just for general knowledge but especially for coding. Even with Gemini 3.8, I regularly see it fall back to outdated libraries, packages, APIs, deprecated syntax etc.
Web search can help with factual lookups, but it doesnât fully compensate for having stale intrinsic knowledge, especially when the model has to reason across a large codebase or generate code without explicitly searching every dependency.
OpenAIâs and Anthropicâs newer models have noticeably more recent built-in knowledge, and in a lot of tasks the difference is very easy to feel.

They should give a banked reset to all paid users for everyday that they dont release genini 4 like openai did with astra.

Daily reminder that, a new version of a fancy LLM doesn't add anything meaningful in any way to your life.

u/Civil-Director-1140 17h ago
If you're incapable of making use of the huge jump in capability between 3.8 flash and 4.0 Argon then that speaks a lot more about you than anything else.

u/BronsteinLev 16h ago
You can say that about most iterations of things that are coming out, except for AI. New fancy LLMs absolutely do change people's lives meaningfully. So take your chicken soup for the soul elsewhere.

Pro 3.1 can't handle a thousand lines in a spreadsheet through a python script, degrading quickly and hallucinating numbers..in a python script.Â
I fucking need 4 to do work and it's not worth getting GPT since I need that 5 TB Google drive space.Â

u/TheCh0rt 12h ago
Dude everybody chill out. Itâs a big rollout, do you want it to crash and do a bad job or do you actually want it to work well and do correct work for you without constant hallucination, slow speeds and general stupidity wasting your plan rates?

u/Lopsided-Anteater129 2h ago
Gemini told me not to expect it until January. ÂŻâ \â _â (â ăâ )â _â /â ÂŻ

According to ceo, itâs going through eval with United States gov and cybersecurity. But I donât think that info will stop you from crying. Do have a hearty cry daily. Maybe you need it.

u/biggest_guru_in_town 15h ago
Do you need the latest bleeding edge to fulfill your needs?
4
u/FischenGeil 14h ago
I'm curious, why are you even here?
1
u/biggest_guru_in_town 14h ago
A prospecting customer who wants to get the maximum value for his money since cost of living is high. I'm trying to see what we can do as customers get the most out of our money and not pay for something we don't really need. Separate practicality from hype.
5
u/rirnez 14h ago
I really hope that sounded better in your head.
1
u/biggest_guru_in_town 14h ago
No. This is expected. But I assure you I am neutral. I could care less who is the top AI as long as they do the task well. Go ahead. Ratio me. It won't change a thing.
4
u/TallonZek 14h ago
Ask it to make a PDF for you that contains layered tables and specific formatting, let me know how it goes.
2
u/biggest_guru_in_town 14h ago
That shouldn't require bleeding edge lol that's the problem. Is that a complex task really? Do we need gemini ultra plus deluxe edition to do that?
5
u/TallonZek 14h ago
For Gemini it's near impossible. Pretty useless at game dev too right now (in comparison).
Another example: I can tell Astra to spin up 4 subagents and test rpg party mechanics and it will do so and provide a full log of their interactions. If you ask Gemini to do the same it will pretend to do so, and then give a completely made up after game report with nonsense sycophant 'feedback'.
2
u/biggest_guru_in_town 14h ago
Exactly. So Google dropped the ball.
3
u/TallonZek 14h ago
I consider Astra and Opus to both be about on par with me, maybe smarter. Working with Gemini is not in that league, more like working with someone with dementia, but it googles turn for 'introducing the worlds new best model' this month so the pressure is on for them to step up.

It's already well behind Anthropic, Openai, and even the top Chinese AI models. Why do you care?
