This is way more complicated than blaming one government. Fiji became a transit point for meth heading to the very lucrative Australian and NZ markets. Some of that meth stayed, a local market developed, injecting took off, and Fiji simply wasn’t prepared with enough clean needles, drug treatment, HIV testing or harm reduction. That’s the environment in which HIV exploded. This has been building for years across multiple governments.

ia ora na from Tahiti, we share the same issues regarding meth and STD here. However our government communicate less on these topics.

only positive thing this govt did, instead of fixing issues, all they did for 4 years was to try to bring our own Taliban back into power.. and give them all the powers by fucking up the constitution ..

Wrong government. The HIV crisis is a result of the drug crisis that was allowed to take over the country by the FijiFirst Government.

Had they taken the drug and HIV problem seriously a decade ago, we wouldn't be in this mess today.

Drug lords were protected by the FijiFirst government. FijiFirst Cabinet Ministers helped them establish their money laundering operations.

They removed most senior police officers and gave those jobs to their cronies, in particular unqualified stooges like Naivalurua and Qiliho. So unqualified was Qiliho, for example, that he was sent (on the taxpayers dime) to go to school while already holding the post of Police Commissioner.

Tell us what they did to stop the drug trade?

As the HIV crisis was growing, they did nothing whatsoever to stop it. No big awareness campaign, let alone a needle sharing program. The current government was just as lame in this department until finally waking up this past month.

I'm speechless. I travel to Fiji from Oz usually twice a year, but staying on one of the isolated Northern Yasawa islands. To think our own dodgy meth-heads are partly fueling this crisis in your beautiful lands..
