Doing a bit of research but, what kind of characters would you say a Mix-Up focused character struggles against? Like, you can say a grappler character with typical low mobility struggles against someone who can keep him out with good projectiles/keepaway and whatever.

What would be a character who can do well against a mix-up. I know you can say zoners but I'm imagining tools to keep them out and thinking about characters who can handle themselves well inside a vortex.

Hey, I'm looking to get into fighting games. I have some experience playing Mk11 a few years ago, but want to pick up something that has a steady learning curve and is plenty of fun. Would love to get some suggestions. (I have a pretty good gaming laptop, and an xbox layout controller of it helps)

Whichever fighting game appeals the most to you is the best one. Me recommending street fighter 6 isn't helpful if you think all the characters look boring and prefer the anime aesthetics of a Guilty Gear

Whichever fighting game makes you want to play and learn more is the one you'll have the easiest time learning

But as a general overview

Street fighter 6, Tekken 8, Guilty gear Strive, Avatar Legends, 2XKO, Street fighter 3 Third Strike and Marvel Tokon all have enough players to find games pretty much all day without much issue

However there are caveats with 2XKO, Marvel and Third Strike.

2XKO will cease development this December. The servers will stay up for the foreseeable future but the playerbase is likely to only decrease going forward

Marvel Tokon has a really bad PC port and rough netcode (on PC). If you don't have a PS5 I can't recommend Marvel Tokon

Third strike is an old game and people emulate it on "Fightcade" it has good netcode and a healthy playerbase. However due to it being an older game the execution is more strict and finding other complete beginners might be more difficult

This is also the game where the famous "Evo moment 37" is from

Games I have not listed do still have dedicated communities but those usually don't find games via the in game matchmaking but rather on community discord servers.

If there's a small game that catches your eye I'd suggest checking out your regions discord server for the game to see how lively it is.

Not sure what I am feeling about fighting games atm. I put in some time and tried to get in with a streamer's discord. I have done a good bit but I don't feel I have the competitive drive. Often I chose not to start the game up and train or do ranked. Right now the main game is GGST, I haven't tried any of the others they play on occasion. I am uncertain if it is the game, the character I am trying to main, or if its the genre as a whole that I am not feeling well with. I feel I am getting more stressed out than enjoyment from it.

Any advice?

You haven't given us much info to go off of, but it's supposed to be fun, not stressful. Don't stress over winning, "getting good" or impressing a streamer right now. Just find the joy in pressing buttons to make your guy hit the other guy.

Is there something in particular about Strive or your current main that you feel is a bad fit for you?

Often I don't feel like booting up the game at all to play alone. I am not a competitive person and don't care about winning. I don't think I am that parasocial having a want to impress the streamer, just nice I found a community to chat to and get some courage to practice while the stream is happening.

I have bounced around the cast for a bit. I locked in after buying one of the season passes for 113 games on Baiken, but then had a crisis and switched off. I went to Axl but now I feel though I am at the same level of skill and rank, I am just not having fun. I am unsure if it is the Strive mechanics themselves, my controller, or if I should buy another DLC character to try. Unfortunately Strive doesn't have anyway to trail the characters before purchase atm.

Can you find people to play with on that discord, or maybe another one? I know there's a Strive beginner discord out there somewhere. Doing sets with someone I know and can chat with feels a lot less like "playing alone" to me than queuing for ranked matches. And of course there's local play but I'm guessing you thought of that.

It may be the game or the character, but I don't think switching controllers will make the game more fun unless your current one is giving you serious issues. Maybe try out a different game for a while. Granblue has a very generous trial version, 2XKO, Tough Love Arena and Idol Showdown are free, and Fightcade supports netplay for a huge variety of older games.

The lack of character trials is a big pain point with Strive, yeah. If you're on Steam you can refund a character after less than 2 hours of play/two weeks of purchase, which is usually a sufficient amount of time to tell if you like them and want to put some effort into learning them.

I'm looking for a 2d fighter game where I don't have to memorize combos and I can have a liberating intuition on how to do combos.

I've been looking at these games:

Skullgirls

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes

Blazblue Centralfiction

Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core Plus R

I like Guilty Gear Strive for it's animation but I hate how the gatling system works since I feel like I can't combo that easy and I found out for some normal attacks you can only gatling into a pre defined route instead of doing whatever you want.

Skullgirls has magic series (LP>LK>MP>MK>HP>HK) combos and UNI has both magic series (L>M>H) and Reverse Beat (H>M>L) so they both feel a little more lenient toward improvised combos. Skullgirls also has assists some of which make ad-hoc combo extensions pretty easy once you get the hang of using them. It's not optimal play but it's fine and fun if you're just playing casually.

Accent Core has more lenient gatlings than Strive but I still felt like I needed to memorize and practice specific routes to get anything decent going.

You'll need to memorize combo routes no matter what. You cannot mash and get combos in traditional fighting games.

Brand new? Just learning the game? There's a lot. im gonna just list a few of the more important, simpler things that you can do.

Play the game first and foremost. Not joking. This is your reminder that even though people think FG players spend all their time in training mode, we're mostly here to fight. Get used to your character, figure out what your buttons do, which ones hit from what ranges, and how it feels to fight everyone else. People will tell you a lot of things that will help you improve, but you dont have the context for any of that right now. You're going to lose. You're supposed to. Get used to that too. Its not a reflection on you as a person.

Next, make sure you can use every single move in the move list. You may not need all of them in a match, but you should be able to execute each of them. To be more explicit: if you are playing Classic you need to know how to use motion inputs. This is not optional.

Then, learn how to anti air consistently. Crouching heavy punch (also known as 2HP in numpad notation) is usually an anti air button in SF6. Practice positioning yourself so that if your opponent jumps in you can stuff them. Its harder than it looks because you have to do this in a match when youre focused on other things.

Practice counter DI. If someone uses Drive Impact, do it back.

Learn one solid combo. Something that feels satisfying to land that you can execute consistently and deals a decent amount of damage that you can get into when you land one of your buttons in neutral.

That should get you going for a good while. Theres a lot more to learn and improve but if you haven't done all of these things first I would aay that they take priority.

I play FG's on PC and just bought a wireless headset (steelseries arctis nova 5) to replace my old wired headset (logitech g432).

Was going wireless a mistake for FG's?

Wireless headphones are usually fine unless youre having sound issues that I'd expect you to experience outside of the game also. There are no FG-specific concerns that Im aware of.

FG players do tell people to get an ethernet connection over Wi-Fi because a wireless internet connection is unavoidably unreliable but thats very different from what youre asking about.
