Book Club Discussion Jade War - Discussion Part 2

2 Upvotes

We're currently reading Jade War by Fonda Lee for September's book of the month, and this discussion will be on the book's second half.

This discussion includes the entire book, so if you haven't finished it yet, please avoid this topic. The comments and questions below will contain spoilers.

I'll post some questions to go along with the reading but feel free to comment about anything else or start your own comment thread on anything you found interesting or any questions that you had.

  • What do you think of the relationship between Wen and Hilo throughout the book and at the end? What about the relationship between Shae and Hilo? Do you think Wen was justified in her actions?
  • How do you think that Hilo has grown into the role of being the Pillar through the course of the story?
  • What did you think of the conclusion of the duel between Ayt and Shae? What do you think of Shae's use of foreign politics and international business to strengthen No Peak?
  • What did you think of Anden's decision to return to Kekon and wear jade again as a doctor? Where do you think he truly belongs?
  • Did you find the conclusion and epilogue satisfying? What did you think of Lee bringing Bero back into the story at the end?
  • How would you rate this book? Would you recommend it to others? Do you plan on reading the last book in the trilogy?

Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now known and coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

The Kauls have been battered by war and tragedy. They are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference that could destroy the Green Bone way of life altogether. As a new generation arises, the clan’s growing empire is in danger of coming apart.

The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices… but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect.

Book Suggestions Looking for Dual POV Fantasy Books

0 Upvotes

I know the Fantasy genre for male readers is smaller. The Male POV books are basically smut stores to me with no context. I like the mix of both sides. I have read Runyx books, and looking for similar POV styles from other authors. Thank You

Searching for a Warrior Poet MC

2 Upvotes

Dear Gentle Readers,

[This was originally posted to r/RomanceBooks, but I have been recommended to share this post here as well. I am looking for a solid romance subplot at the very least. My offerings are all romances.]

I am on a quest to discover this elusive yet beloved of characters: the Warrior Poet.

⚔️ 🛡️ 🏹 This character is highly skilled in the art of warfare or, especially in more modern contexts, exceedingly clever. This character may be seen as a brute or a commander, they may be seen as a genius, but in any case they are feared and/or respected by their enemies. If they are more clever than martial, I seek the warrior that can spin webs with words that ensnare their enemies. Most importantly, they do not do battle for the sake of violence or victory itself, but in the pursuit or protection of that which they love.

🪉❤️‍🔥✍️ This character can be incredibly gentle and self-aware. They notice and appreciate beauty in all forms. They create verse, song, or other crafts - or they would, if they were not so occupied with the war they must wage. They are unafraid of their deepest feelings and make them known. They don't fear their own tears. When they love, the depth of their passion is unfathomable (and potentially unsettling).

Some examples of the warrior poet are Aragorn and Faramir from the Lord of the Rings, Eivor from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Loki from the TV show Loki, Destruction from Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Katsumoto from the Last Samurai.

I will devour any tale that contains this trope. Characters of any gender, circumstance, and moral bent may be a warrior poet. I want to see this character fiercely defend their love, but also praise and worship them as their muse.

Please, dear friends, share with me your treasures! 🙏

My offerings:

{The Player by Kresley Cole}

{Bewitching Rhaego by Victoria Aveline}

{The Fang Arrangement by Sarah Blue}

{Taming the Wolves by Lyx Robinson}

{The Wraith King by Juliette Cross}

{Black and Silver by Gwendolyn Harper}

{The Dragon and the Pearl by Jeannie Lin}

{Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood}

{Mine to Take by Dara Joy}

I really wanted {Golden Surrender by Heather Graham} to be this, but the characters weren't emotionally mature enough.

2 Upvotes

This thread is for any authors or writers within the community to share books, announce upcoming projects, or even get feedback on something you are working on. Anything fantasy-adjacent is allowed too. Do you have a blog or podcast about a popular series? That's fair game too! You are allowed to promote on someone else's behalf if you found or know a new author you love.

Normal self-promotion rules don't apply to this thread, so feel free to reply even if you aren't a member of the community—though we'd love to have you join in on a monthly read.

Epic fantasy suggesting

19 Upvotes

So I love 15 plus hour long books, whole fantasy world, long series. The longer the better. My tops are the wondering inn, he who fights with monsters, dragon blood, Tameraire, game of thrones, death before dragons, basically any Lindsay Buroker book, and the magic kingdom of land over .

I love dragons and long series and I love to get lost in a world of fantasy but not too much fantasy that I get lost like lord of the rings, (although I have never listened bc I got lost in the movies).

And I’m tired of finding romance books an audible. That is laterally the only books in my suggested by this point and I can’t trust anything my algorithm suggests.

Please help!

Book Discussion Which fantasy books let the cost of magic linger?

17 Upvotes

A character can be too tired to stand after casting a spell, then be fine when the story needs them again. I'm interested in the awkward practical aftermath: someone else has to keep watch, carry them, or finish a job they promised to do.

Which books let that cost change the group's decisions after the fight is over? It doesn't have to be a permanent injury. Even needing help for a few days could put a very independent character in an interesting position. Please mark spoilers.

24y looking for fantasy buddy

4 Upvotes

I love all sorts of fantasy and am looking for someone hopefully in their twenties who doesn't mind reading most sub genres of fantasy. My only stipulation is that it has a happy/semi happy ending. Meaning I am okay with some tragedy as long as there is a silver lining and a sense of general happiness at the end.

Currently reading many books

Ruin of Kings

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me

The Shadowmagic Trilogy

Some of Terry Pratchett

The list goes on...

I very much enjoyed:

Half a Soul

The House in the Cerulean Sea

Book Discussion Which fantasy places feel worth saving, even with all their flaws?

7 Upvotes

When a fantasy city is threatened, I want some sense of what people would actually lose. A market, a shared meal, an ordinary routine can matter more than another description of its towers.

Which books make you care about a place before asking you to worry about its destruction? I'm especially interested in places with problems of their own, where protecting them doesn't mean pretending everything was fine. Please mark spoilers.

I Need Suggestions!!!!

3 Upvotes

Ok so basically while writing this post, i am frustrated. And the reason is yet another amazing (atleast for me) webnovel i was reading is stuck and author is not posting further episodes. It was "From Dying in the Apocalypse to Being Chased by My S-Class Ex-Fiancé!" , i have never read much paranormal or supernatural , whatever you call it,,,, it was about ethan transmigration into Sentinel and guide world after dying in apocalypse. And in the the life he was rejected from lord drey who was S-class, he started improving got his hands on some book about increasing his rank by saint aster and started becoming powerful, someone else who was most powerful called ethan "His wife" in one episode but ethan never knew someone like that existed and later in story xavier appeared and ethan saw and met him for first time who apperently was most powerful and had strengths ethan had not even seen possessed by other S-class Sentinel and I am 90 percent sure that xavier was the person who was calling him his wife because story just stopped there,,,,,, Now why did i tell the story? Because i want something like that but not webnovel or webseries but an actual released novel series,,, i have read some paranormal series before, one had five books so its not possible that no actual novel series is not released and this kind of plot or books are only written by asians and then translated ti english, please suggest me!!!!!!!

Book Discussion What makes a training scene feel earned?

4 Upvotes

A training scene is more convincing to me if the student gets it right once and then can't repeat it. Especially under pressure. That gap between understanding a lesson and being able to use it feels worth spending time on.

Which fantasy books make learning a skill feel like a process? I'd welcome spoiler-light examples where a later success pays off something small that went wrong earlier.
