Subreddit Meta Brainstorming Bureau - October 04

Find the current Daily Discussion*

Welcome to our weekly thread, Brainstorming Bureau! This is an idea we've trialled previously and, based on feedback and observation, it feels like something the sub has been crying out for, and we're hoping as the weeks go by it'll turn into a lively, community-oriented way to cap off the weekend. We'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to make the best of this idea, so feel free to reach out via modmail if you have any ideas. And without further ado...

What's this about?

Do you have an issue that's too specific to your own fic to make a post about, but too small to seek out a long-term beta or writing partner for? Well, you've come to the right place!

This is where you can drop those plot points you're stuck on ("How would this scenario play out realistically? What should happen next?"), workshop your worldbuilding and concepts ("What should I name this character? What power should I give them? Which fandom would work well as a crossover with this other fandom?"), or get a second opinion on an approach to character development ("Is this a good central conflict? What would have to happen to make a character realise this?"). It's your space to talk through any issue that can't be solved through more generalised writing advice.

How to play:

To participate, comment with any aspect of your fic you've been mulling over or hitting a wall with. Other users will then respond with suggestions and questions to help you get to where you need to be. No idea is too big or too small, provided your comment fits within the parameters below. Feel free to be as fandom blind or specific as you like!

Rules:

  • Please state your fandom at the top of your comment, along with any common and pertinent content warnings
  • NSFW text should be placed behind a spoiler tag or linked to, as per site content restrictions
  • Summarise the issue you'd like feedback on in 500 words or less. More information may be given in follow-up comments if requested
  • Links to polls or to any previous installments of the fic will be permitted for context
  • Please specify in your comment what level of critical feedback you're open to
  • When responding to someone's ideas, please keep your feedback constructive and keep their specified level of criticism in mind. If their premise is not to your taste, please choose another
  • If you make a submission to this thread, much like the other weekly events, please comment on at least one other user's request with the best suggestions you have
  • When submitting an idea for brainstorming, please provide adequate context for others to be able to follow along. Remember that this is a multi-fandom subreddit, and not everyone will be familiar with your fandom.

Have fun! And remember, all suggestions are just that and are to be taken with a grain of salt; we're here to help and consider our works from angles we haven't before.

Subreddit Meta Concrit Commune - October 03

Welcome to the Concrit Commune, where you can get bits of your fic looked at... for a small "price."

For the purposes of this thread, concrit is defined as - pointing out things that could use improvement and also giving suggestions on how to do so. Compliments are always welcome, of course but these do not count towards your concrit requirement.

The rules:

  • State your Fandom | Title | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings | Link - AO3, FFN, etc. at the top of the comment.
  • Post a few paragraphs (copy and paste to a comment, please) of your fic, or your plot premise, or your character bio, or your world building, whatever you need help with.
  • There is a soft limit of 500 words. Not your whole fic.
  • Please post an outside link to underage and extreme-explicit violence/rape content. Try Just Paste Me which includes rich text options.
  • If you, the author, are looking for something specific - the phrasing of a particular part or if a character's reaction is believable - please ask!
  • If you just want to hand out advice without throwing your own fic in, you're quite welcome to.
  • If you post part of your fic you must give concrit to someone else in the thread within 24 hours of posting your excerpt!

Since we're all here to give and receive help from other people, a certain level of respect for the author and the work they've put into their fic is expected as a baseline courtesy and should be reciprocated.

Tearing into a fic or author without regard for their effort isn't constructive even if there is decent criticism attached. Moreover, it discourages people from participating if they know that insults await them.

You aren't expected to treat this thread like the Comment Cooperative, advice and honesty and pointing out flaws is what we're here for.

Some helpful tips to keep things running smoothly:

  • Keep your comments helpful to the author, not just smashing out your opinion.
  • Be polite and civil.
  • Be kind. At a minimum, showing your peers professional courtesy is expected.
  • Phrases like "I think" or "I believe" can lighten your tone.
  • Elaborating on why you think something could be changed is not only more useful to the author but keeps statements from being abrupt.

Timezone Changes

As you can see, the post time will shift by 6 hours every month. If there are any inconsistencies in the times, please let us know in modmail so we can fix it up!

Discussion Most absurd choice a character did in a fic?

I once read a fic where character A found character B extremely dehydrated, so they cut their wrists to feed them their blood.

First off, they weren't vampires. It wasn't a vampire AU. The og fandom had nothing to do with vampires.

Secondly, it stated he had a full bottle of water before finding B.

Venting writing for a homophobic fandom

hey!

i write for a homophobic fandom. i made a comment on my own twitter about how it’s an issue. i didn’t tag the fandom or anything, but a popular user reposted it so it got in the attention span of many despite me being a small account.

i mentioned in the comments to my friend i really liked these two pairings (m/m and f/f) and the amount of horrid slurs ive been called as a result has been insane. i’ve been called a misogynist for preferring a f/f pair over the series canonical m/f (no idea how that works ..) and all matters of things.

it’s fine, it can be whatever. im a lesbian personally though, so i even had a few people call me targeted slurs which was annoying.

my fics, linked on my profile, got swarmed with a bunch of horrid comments of the same variety. i’ve turned off comments (pretty sure it’s the same people). im usually good at not reacting to this stuff, but it’s admittedly taken a huge blow to my confidence in writing queer ships.

i just kind of wanted to vent a bit. i dunno! it just sucks. i should definitely write more out of spite though.

Celebrate It finally feels like my characters are making thier own decisions!

A lot of writers online talk about the characters being people that make their own decisions. But I never really felt that way.

It still felt like my characters were doing what they would do. But even then, I could always feel my hand guiding them to where they needed to be.

That is until I was working on my first draft of chapter 10. I'm gonna be honest when I was first. Sitting down to write this, I thought that it would be filler, fluff but filler nontheless. (I had them watch a movie that I really liked).

But then things started happening that departed from the sort of fluffy mood I was going for. The main characters looked at what was in the movie and started reflecting on what happend to them in the past. And had al lot of discussions in the movie. And it just felt like my characters were watching the movie without me directing them to do anything.

Not gonna lie. It's making me fall in love with my characters, and my story. I remember thinking, "Wow, these characters are amazing! And the story is amazing! And I'm the one who gets to write it!!"

So yeah, that was a fun experience.

Discussion Fanfic rec

My creative writing lecturer got to know about the existence of fanfic from us students. Any fanfic that should be good enough to introduce to a 40 ish South East asia woman (maybe conservative? but she the type who doesn't mind to know what us students like, she was shocked people ship MegatronxOptimus Prime but she was not angry just genuine shock) She like tv drama like gossip girl. Just something that will make her "Wow!" (her words not mine)

also no explicit since I need to link the story to her through my student email

Activities and Events Emoji Excerpt Game

Welcome back to the Emoji Excerpt Game! As a reminder, this will be posted on the first and third Tuesdays of every month, Australia time.

How to play:

1.Comment with an emoji. It can be any emoji and you can leave as many comments as you like.

NOTE: We don't want other players' prompts getting buried so let's make a soft limit of 3-5 emojis at a time. You can always post more a bit later to spread out the fun!

2.Reply to an emoji with an excerpt from your fic that you think matches. It could include a vibe, a word, or even the emoji itself. It's totally up to you how literally or loosely you want to interpret the prompt, so go nuts! For the best chance of your excerpt being read by other players, try to stick to under around 400 words. Please remember to spoiler mark mature content where appropriate and warn for triggers. Make sure you check rules 7 and 12 in the sub rules for content restrictions.

3.Remember to upvote and comment on people's excerpts. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least one response for every five excerpts you receive. You're also encouraged to read through the thread and comment on any other excerpts that speak to you! The point of these games is building an encouraging community and getting to know our fellow writers. Without that reciprocity this would just be a compilation of excerpts, and where's the fun in that?

Activities and Events “A scene where…” excerpt game

Rules:

  1. Leave a prompt that goes “a scene where…” and finish the sentence

  2. Respond to others prompts with scenes from your fics where whatever they say happens

  3. Keep it vague enough where it could fit many fandoms.

  4. Put trigger warning at the top of the comments, and censor the worst, most descriptive parts. If the prompt itself is a trigger warning (ie a scene where a character is shot) you don’t need to add an extra one on your comment.

  5. Please do your best to try and respond to some excerpts, even if it’s just one or two word compliments.

Writing Questions How do you even write characters whose personalities are beyond your comprehension?

All of the characters I want to write about come from different backgrounds, have quirks in their speech, and such an exponentially different worldview that I cannot begin to put myself in their shoes. I can't write a mischievious character who pulls pranks on everyone because I think too literally, I can't write a detective because I am far from perceptive, and I can't write differing dialogues between characters because I end up turning them into my mouthpiece. I need a little help on this please :((

Writing Questions How to find the Writing Spark again?

First time joining and posting after quietly looking around the subreddit for a while! Sorry if the flair or posts isnt right, lmk what needs to be fixed and ill do so :D

Okay, so..basically, just what the title says. When i was a younger teen, i got REALLY into reading and writing, especially when it had to do with my special interests (specifically Loz!)
I remember spending like 2 months writing a multichapter, 3 volume Loz fanfic on my hand-me-down windows 97 computer when i was like 13.

I felt so much inspiration and excitement to write that story whenever i could. During breakfast? Writing. During lunch? Writing. After school? Writing. When i should have been sleeping?
You guessed it, writing. That computer didnt have internet on it, so i never actually got to read other fanfics for inspiration. It just. Appeared. And after i finished, it was gone. I could never find that spark again, despite the STRONG desire to write and create in a way other than drawing.

What are ways you guys find the spark to write after long periods of time without doing it? What inspires you? Hell, where do i even start writing as a newbie writer? Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Recs Wanted Modern Characters In Fictional Worlds

I’m in a very particular mood, so I’m hoping people will offer up their favorite modern characters thrown into their favorite stories type thing. Preferably romance heavy. I pretty much just devoured everything in the modern girl in Thedas tag and found a few random ones for the hobbit and one Naruto that was pretty good. Oh and an untamed one. Prefer the OC to be female and I’m not a huge fan of first person but I’ll read it if it’s really well done. I don’t care about fandom really, just want like modern girl gets send to other world and helps fix things. Thank you!

Discussion You get knocked out, and you suddenly wake up, and you’re the main character of the last fic you posted/worked on at the beginning of the first chapter of your story. Are you on for a good time or a bad time?

Or the last one you read.

You can either be yourself, or you can physically become the character. Also, you have to actually live out the fic, so no major changes are allowed.

Recs Wanted Looking for fics with MC rising through the ranks/society

Hi, first time poster so I hope this is the correct place for this. I'm looking fics where the main character rises through the ranks either of society or an organization throughout the story.

Maybe a bit like the Sharpe books, where the MC constantly runs into situations where she/he/they can show her/his/their skill/mind/talent to just the right person and gets promoted. Maybe she/he/they run a company, or own a piece of land where their economic endeavors slowly develop? Maybe they rise through the ranks of some kind of nobility?

I'm looking for the kind of feeling you get when playing games like Anno, the Total War series or maybe Knights of the Old Republic, where you rise from some nobody to the famous hero...

I'm fine with historical fics, AUs, crossovers, etc. I'm not hugely into M/M, but frankly I read anything if I like the story. Similarly I don't have restrictions on fandoms apart from fate/stay night, fire emblem, supernatural or genshin impact, which I don't like.

Whatever you come up with I would love to know. Maybe there is such a collection out there already? (I have not found one...)

Thank you all.

Lost Fic [My Hero Academia] [BakuDeku]

Im looking for a fanfic that was about Midoriya interviewing Bakugo who is a well-known taiko drummer. It's in the aged-up smut genre and Bakugo is the one to start flirting with Midoriya first. Midoriya is eyeing Bakugo first, but Bakugo is the first to physically make a move. From what I remember, Midoriya is the top. I think I read it back in college but haven't been able to find it since. I think it was deleted but I'm looking for the title or author so I can see if someone has it saved in archives.

Recs Wanted Yoir favourite "Choose Your Own Adventure" fics?

I just finished this one book that's literary fiction written using the "choose your own adventure" format and it kind of got me interested in it. I know that "choose your own adventure" is a canonical tag and there are collection aggregating fics like this, but I would also like to see what fics out there you folks would vouch for!

I'm interested in fics about canon characters, so without a self-insert protagonist. I'm perfectly fine reading fandom-blind, I've had some very good times this way, but some fandoms I read in include: Bungou Stray Dogs (just please don't send soukoku my way), Persona 5 (I've actually been making some designs on "welcome to the shujin detective club!") Metaphor Refantasio, Pathologic, Disco Elysium, Hades games, Baldur's Gate 3, Expedition 33 and The Magnus Archives (not The Magnus Protocol tho)

Lost Fic Need help finding a BG3 Astarion centric fanfiction. NSFW

What I remember from the fanfic is:

  • It was posted around 2025-2026.
  • It was one chapter.
  • It was focused on Astarion and Cazador.
  • The plot is that Cazador was forcing Astarion to touch himself while he was being tortured with a rat that was stuck in a cage on his stomach.
  • Eventually the rat starting burrowing into him but Cazador still made Astarion keep going.

Any help is much appreciated!

Writing Questions How to write a really boring character

I've recently started writing fanfiction about the Magnus Archives with a friend of mine, and we have an idea for the next one but I'm not sure how to actually write it. To summarise the usual format of the Magnus Archives it is the main characters reading statements of paranormal occurances (go listen it is absolutely excellent). The statement givers are all unique characters that feel special and like actual people, especially when read out loud in the podcast (again go listen). Me and my friend enjoy writing statements of our own about OCs and in universe characters, but we've ran into a problem. How do we write a bland character?

I'm not talking about a boring or uncompelling side character, how do I write someone who, despite telling a story, is so incredibly unimportant and uninteresting that unsalted butter has more of a personality than him? I'm talking absolutely nothing interesting, no hobbies, no goals other than trying to "be cool and successful," no friends, no meaningful relationships beyond work colleagues, absolutely nothing. How would you write an empty tube of toothpaste of a human being, who is so uninteresting that not even the paranormal entity in his story notices him, he's basically the ATLA cabbage merchant but not even that interesting.

For more context the OC he is encountering is an entity me and my friend thought of that effectively is whoever looks at it ideal self, and with that comes the terrifying knowledge that you (the person looking at it) will never be good enough or like them. The goal is to start with this milk toast of a human on a date and accidentally encountering the entity, and then span over a year or 2 of truly random encounters, and eventually end with him actually gaining a personality by the end. I have a plan, I have story notes, I have about 2000 words ready to be written, but no idea how to write from such a boring characters perspective. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Lost Fic Trying to find a John Price/Reader fic [Call of Duty]

For the life of me I cannot find this fic.

I remember the premise being reader is brought onto the team to help, but John essentially tells her she is expendable and he will not risk the lives of the boys for her. She accepts that.

I believe the first chapter (or maybe 2nd) is reader being held hostage and then the chapters following that are from when reader is brought onto the team and the missions after etc.

It would have been in the last year or two it was started.

I do believe it is female reader but it may also be original female character, but I believe reader.

Any help would be amazing. I thought I added it to my bookmarks but cannot find it, and I have not seen any "deleted" bookmarks either.

Writing Questions Is it bad to post a really long chapter in the middle of a fic for purely character development and not plot

So I have a fic that is 98 000 words in a kinda dead fandom but, pretty popular for how dead the fandom is. I feel like the length is turning off new readers and maybe not completely new readers as it’s fandom blind friend but, people in the fandom prefer shorter sweet spot fics. I write for the dead fandom but, I want to tell my story and cutting it will just make the story worse. It’s 98 000 words with 27 chapters with my average chapter being around 2 000 words with 3 chapters of 10 000 words to explain what happened in between arcs and were paragraphs heavy, but it’s when my fic started picking up. This chapter is 7 000 words long while the chapter before was 4 000 I can’t separate it as it would completely ruin the pacing and flow, but it’s not like it’s the first kiss or anything big like that or a fight it’s friendly fun and development between all characters. There are 13 characters in this chapter and another oc introduced not formally. If you were a reader would you hate this. I haven’t updated in 2 weeks I usually update in a little over a week. It’s not even a quarter done and there will be a part 2 I’m afraid people will get bored. Idk. I need advice.
