Question/Advice/Discussion Always carried, never used, until the other night.
This is much different than most stuff I post here with y’all, but it was heavy and I’ve never been more glad to have a consistent EDC in my life. Had to use my Narcan the other night after years of keeping some with me. Was heading home from a meeting around 9pm and pulled up to a stop sign and looked to my left and saw a shirtless dude laying flat on his back next to a bike on the sidewalk. I got out of my car and rushed over, two good Samaritans were already there, I confirmed one of them was on the phone with 911, the other one was panicking because his chest wasn’t moving up and down and she thought he was dead. I got down next to him and he was indeed not breathing. Checked his pupils with my flashlight (Surefire E1D backup for the nerds) which were the most pinned I’ve ever seen, and got an incredibly faint distal pulse on him, did sternal rubbing and smacked his face to see if there was any response and got nothing.
Administered the Narcan down his right nostril and after about 20 seconds his eyes started moving behind his eyelids, then he opened them and looked up at me “who are you?”. I introduced myself. His name was Jimmy. His response was “Tim-Jim?”, motioning back and forth to him and I. I feel like if I said “or Jimothy?” that would’ve been funny but I didn’t think of it until I was back in my car heading home.
EMT’s and Cops showed up about 4-5 minutes after I administered, gave my statement, said goodbye to Jimmy, and left him to get checked out by medical.
This stuff works. Please take the time to get some, keep it in good working order temperature/expiry wise, and with you. I lost my best friend to an overdose five years ago. An impulsive mistake, a line of cocaine that unknowingly was contaminated with fentanyl, and wish I could’ve done the same for her, but in some sort of way I guess I did. Take care of each other gang, carry basic STB medical and consider getting a thing of Narcan.
Edit: Gear List so this post doesn’t get taken down.
-4mg dose of Naloxone, ie. “Narcan”
Update:
I’m hopping back in here, was not expecting this post to take off the way it has. First off, shout out to all of you for keeping discourse civil, and for experts in the medical field educating us and correcting common misnomers. I learned a lot so far today, so for that, thank you.
To those of you opposing the philosophy of stepping in to save a life without it being requested (overdose specific here), your opinions are respected and of course you’re entitled to it, but I too will stand on what I believe to be right, and will continue to look out for my neighbors. Before leaving the scene, I kneeled down to dap the guy and give him a shoulder hug, told him to take care of himself, and the last thing he said to me was. “Hey, um…thank you man”. Do with that what you will.
Second, I appreciate all the kind words and messages. I’m grateful to have been in the right place at the right time, and had what I needed to make an impact, but I want to make it abundantly clear that I am absolutely no hero or anyone special. This post is filled with REAL ones that are selflessly saving lives daily, and quite often thanklessly (I’m talking about you Curri, Kensmkv, seriousallthetime, epichaha, the_last_hairbender, I-Want_A_Ribeye, grapefruitspoon, Anarchotype, NinjaMcGee, Gunncelt, and likely many others that were harder to identify). I’m just a dude that has experienced some loss, seen some shitty things, and decided to educate and equip myself so that maybe, if I found myself in a situation to save or protect a life, I had the right kit and training, allowing me the ability to do so.
Appreciate all of y’all, and for anyone who has lost someone to overdose, do not hesitate to reach out. You have an open ear, and are not in this alone.
