Question/Advice/Discussion This Sub NSFW
Couple things:
1. Can we go back to the Age/Job Title post requirement on anything but a discussion post? I may be alone in this, but I have no interest in contextless photos of just knives/handguns titled “My Glock”. There are other subs for that. The only interesting posts on the sub are/have always been full EDC photos with the context of what the person does for a living. If you scroll through the feed, these are the only posts that get any engagement.
2. Why continue posting your EDC every couple days if it hasn’t changed? I understand that we all must worship at the content creation altar, but for me the only EDC “content creators” should be people actually creating something physical that we can put in our pockets, and then explaining the things they made. Again, maybe it’s just me, but I’m not interested in seeing repeated, thinly veiled advertisements for instagram accounts.

No one wants to admit they live in the suburbs, work in a cubicle and carry a gun and 2 knives.

I don’t think people really care lol with 30 states in the United States now being constitutional carry (no permit required to lawfully carry a concealed firearm), carrying a gun has become way more common.
Maybe not for others from other countries where guns are banned or almost impossible to obtain. But for those of us in the states, you can’t really knock people for exercising their 2nd amendment rights where a country and its constitution allows it 🤷🏻♂️
11
u/RedditMcBurger May 30 '26
Yet when people post with a carry firearm there are always comments freaking out about it, usually the "why would you need a gun for defense?"

How is carrying a firearm cosplay? Just because your job doesn’t need the use of a firearm doesn’t deem carrying a firearm as cosplay? I guess because I conceal carry a firearm in the supermarket I’m a cosplay cop.

For me, it's the meticulously curated and filtered collection of knick knacks that nobody in 2026 would actually be carrying.
Example,
"Going for an Evening Stroll"
Wooden pipe
Bespoke pipe tool
Matches
Gun from the 70s
Spotless handkerchief
Nonsense $300 fidget toy
39
u/Blurgas May 30 '26
Nonsense $300 fidget toy
That was a wild time back before fidget spinners became "mainstream" because people were posting about their super-fancy spinners that cost north of $500.
I think near to or more than $1000 wasn't entirely unusual.5
u/RGud_metalhead May 30 '26
And I remember a short-lived trend before fidget spinners where people were buying fancy little spinning tops, sometimes from known knife makers. They also were quite expensive sometimes. Kinda funny that some YouTubers justified spending lots of money on those cause they're so great... And now they probably don't even remember that they have/had those wonderful useful things.

u/NH4Cl May 30 '26
This sub is full of people who have made EDC their hobby, which just means buying and collecting nice stuff.
Pocket dump threads on old forums/imageboards were much better for seeing what normal people with different professions and lifestyles carry.
20
u/LetterNumberAnd_Only May 30 '26
And that's what I'm after!!! Age/profession/pocket dump. I want the slice of actual life displayed in what people carry, not aesthetic pics of what you bought online.
8
u/TheDungeonCrawler May 30 '26
Spotless handkerchief
Tbf, I do carry a handkerchief on me at all times even if I don't use it daily because it's easy to keep on my person (I just stow in it in my back pocket), I keep an eyeglass cloth in it, and it does legitimately come up sometimes. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it.
Ruined one ensuring a friend's nose didn't bleed all over the interior of my car, so they definitely come in handy.

I agree people delude the ideal of EDC. i do like seeing what other people might carry, but i really kind of maxed out on getting useful tools that you could EDC, but yeah a gameboy? a camera? a flask? am i really suppose to believe being a functional alcoholic is an "EDC" tool that you carry around and want to show off to inspire others?

u/MichaelPeters4321 May 30 '26 edited May 31 '26
I do agree a little bit. I don't really have any interest in seeing EDCs that are essentially jewelry where you can clearly see it's never used and I am also a fan of having some context. But then again there are only so many tools you can carry and that make sense so I guess that would also run its course kinda quickly.

u/wupaa May 30 '26
I dont get offended by gubs but picture with just a watch, pistol and barely used folder is boring and has two things one uses per day
28
u/flavorburst May 30 '26
Pistol with no holster and zero wear is also extremely common. No holster = not really carried
9
1
u/wupaa May 30 '26
True. No holster = not even used - I wish practicing involves holster at least
4
u/cloud_cleaver May 30 '26
A lot of public ranges won't let you practice from the draw for safety and liability reasons, so draw-practice usually has to be done separately from actual shooting.
6
u/pbgod May 30 '26
A lot of public ranges won't let you practice from the draw for safety and liability reasons
There definitely are places like this, in my area, one of the more corporate feeling indoor ranges only has bays with counters and don't allow any drawing. A lot of them also have rules about how quickly you can fire, so you can't even do a Bill Drill/Mozambique/etc from a low ready.
Generally, find out what range in your area hosts IDPA/USPSA/etc and they're typically much more open to realistic usage.

u/flavorburst May 30 '26
My issue is that it's everyday carry. There's no situation where it's acceptable to actually carry a loose gun, even if it's in a bag it should be contained in some way.
51
u/BigBL87 May 30 '26
Eh, I'd rather have less gatekeeping.
And hard pass on disclosing my personal information in order to post something.
16
u/deepthought515 Lumenologist May 30 '26
I think gatekeeping can be a good thing sometimes.
7
u/BigBL87 May 30 '26
As in not letting people post full on ads, sure. If you want to call that gatekeeping.
But effectively running someone off because they don't like what they carry, or requiring them to post potentially identifying information in their age and occupation if they want to participate, nah.
1
u/deepthought515 Lumenologist May 30 '26
Agreed! Posts shouldn’t be performative or have ulterior motives.

It’s just a thinly veiled attempt to try and remove guns and knives because OP dislikes them. They want to make their own rules instead of following the sub rules.
3
u/SilatGuy2 May 31 '26
Im glad someone said it. Thats exactly what it is. It happens constantly since ive been here. They try to frame it all subtle and coy like but its totally obvious.
In my opinion since we are on the topic im of the idea the mods are WAY too lenient and should be enforcing the rules more heavily. I see way too many edc police crying in the comments, questioning and bullying people and breaking the rules blatantly.
-6
u/kiroyapso2 May 30 '26
Yeah, the budget group seems to have a superiority complex or something. Especially when you take care of your gear that prevents premature wear or use solid raw materials that's hard to show wear than scratched anodized.
Always see "finally some real EDC" whenever you see budget posts. Im fine with any kind of EDC so not sure what their problem is
2
u/BigBL87 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Ya, as someone who likes and tries stuff across both the budget and premium realms, that does drives me nuts when it happens.
I think there are some people who don't use some stuff because they paid so much for it, but what do I care. Their money, not mine.
I've had people comment on my channel that I'm "fake" because my knives/etc. don't "look" heavily used.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not torture testing my knives like some guys. That's not my lane, really. But when you have a ton of knives, and maintain them, one individual knife probably won't end up looking particularly beat up. 🤷♂️. But I guess engagement is engagement.

I don’t see this as gatekeeping, I see it as requiring a bare minimum amount of effort to engage with the sub. I don’t even care about the age (or gender which also used to be a requirement, if I remember correctly). But putting your profession at least provides some context and encourages discussion. Most of the comments here seem to suggest that the discussion this would encourage would be toxic (which is a separate issue), but at least it wouldn’t be an entire feed of pictures of individual equipment with low effort titles and 2 comments each.
7
u/BigBL87 May 30 '26
If you care that much about it, ask people when you see a post where that intrigues you. They can answer, or choose not to, but maybe that will prompt the kind of discussion you are looking for.
My carry also changes from work to my time off drastically because of limitations with what I can have on my person at work. So if I were to share what I carry "off duty" it would make no sense in relation to my profession.
Also, maybe the fact that most of the comments say it would be toxic is kind of an indicator of how things have gone in the past or on other subreddits.

For real? You want us to do your thinking?
3
u/Keystone-Habit May 31 '26
I mean why not go to people who obsess about this stuff for advice? A regular person knows they want a knife that can do such and such, /r/edc can name the 20 best options at each price point for them.
1
u/Able-Brief-4062 White-Collar EDCer May 30 '26
Do their thinking for something that is person specific none the less.
0
u/UnsureAndUnqualified May 31 '26
If it's just that vague, fully agree. But I can understand people figuring out what they want and then asking the community what best matches those needs.
E.g. I know I'd like a copper body, 14500 battery, warm white flashlight with inbuilt USB-C charging. No idea how to find the right one for me because most I see lack at least one of those options. So asking the people who are most likely to know of a light that matches this description would make sense.
6
u/bewitchedbumblebee May 30 '26
For the most part, I find occupation to be an irrelevant detail. Most times when I see an interesting job title and think "Cool, I wonder what sort of niche things this person carries?", the items are just the same stuff that everyone else carries.
2
u/UnsureAndUnqualified May 31 '26
But that could also be because everyone else is overprepared.
E.g. I work in a warehouse. My three needed items for my job are box cutter, ballpoint pen, permanent marker.
- Half this sub already carries some kind of box cutter, the other half carries three different knives.
- Everyone, it seems, carries a pen at all times. Mine is a cheap pen that my workplace had lying around, because it gets banged up and I'm not spending a lot of money on work equipment. Guess which post will generate more engagement, the cheap ballpoint pen everyone has seen a thousand times, or the expensive 100€ titanium and chrome space pen with fidget mechanism or whatever?
My point is: A lot of professions don't need super specialised gear. And what little gear they do need is often already carried by people actually don't need it but like to collect internet points on here.

u/cointalkz May 30 '26
This sub is hilariously performative. It’s the most pure boiled down version of reddit chuds
14
u/OGdunphy May 30 '26
I like seeing which guns people edc. Going to be a lot of the same but that’s for any edc item.
Don’t care about job title, but it’ll mostly be used against the OP, so I see why it’s not required. Plus, it’d be weird to always have to post your job title
11
u/illestxb May 30 '26
My favorite part of the sub is seeing what guns ppl carry.
16
u/One_Information_9018 May 30 '26
My least favorite part of this sub is the instant downvotes anything to do with guns gets. Literally even the word “gun”.

u/OldBlueLegs Techologist May 30 '26
I want to very clearly state that I’m not against guns (or knives). Those are just the most frequently posted individual pieces of equipment. If you carry one, great! Post it with the rest of your stuff.

u/Retaeiyu May 30 '26

u/Browncoat-2517 May 30 '26
The gatekeeping (like OP) is kind of silly. This isn't a job. There are no rules. At best, it's a hobby. If some office worker in New Jersey wants to carry a $300 titanium prybar because it makes him happy, go fuck yourself if you have something to say about it. What are you going to do? Revoke their EDC membership card? Speak to the manager?
Just keep scrolling and shut the hell up.
5
u/Holiday-Archer-2119 May 31 '26
I love this. Sometimes we get a bit too invested, and should just sigh and scroll if we dont like something instead of having the need to be heard on everything.
3
u/UnsureAndUnqualified May 31 '26
I'm guessing OP sighed and scrolled hundreds of times before saying something
1
u/UnsureAndUnqualified May 31 '26
f some office worker in New Jersey wants to carry a $300 titanium prybar because it makes him happy, go fuck yourself if you have something to say about it.
Nobody is complaining that they are carrying that. But if they just post a picture of said prybar with no context, that's a pretty boring post and drags the quality of the sub down. OP is saying make your posts insightful so they don't make the whole sub boring.
EDC is entirely personal, and anyone can carry whatever they want. If someone loves hitchhikers guide they can always have a towel on them for all I care. But the edc subreddit is a shared community, so everyone gets an opinion about we want to see here and what annoys us.

I don't have a job that requires EDC. I work from home. I still carry items, multi-tool, gun, knife when I'm not working. Multi-tool and knife get used throughout the week and sometimes daily. When I don't carry them and something comes up and I need them it's an inconvenience to not have them on me.
7
u/RedditMcBurger May 30 '26
Same! My job actually doesn't let me carry things like knives/tools into the building, my EDC is not at all for my job.
3
u/L4nM4nDr4gon White-Collar EDCer May 30 '26
100%.
Same deal. I don't carry the multi tool but the knife, flashlight, lighter, etc all the time. The gun is I hope never.
But life sucks when you don't have them. Having some basic stuff that took man 30,000 years to make always on you seems smart.
I think I've been carrying a knife since I was like 8
2
u/mkgruff May 30 '26
I've always carried a gun and a knife since I was old enough. As for the multi-tool, my Uncle gave me a cheap Sheffield and I started carrying when I was mowing grass with the ride on. I realized how much time it saved me running to the garage for a tool and then I would find myself out and about and something would pop up that I wish I had it on me. So I went down the rabbit hole and got the Arc and then the Surge.
4
u/OldBlueLegs Techologist May 30 '26
That’s fine!!! The fun thing about the title requirements was that they encouraged people to ask how other people carried things or used them. A heavily composed picture of a pry bar doesn’t really invite conversation. It’s just a picture of a pry bar. The only comment would be “where did you get that pry bar” or “nice pry bar”. That’s what I feel like this sub has become.
1
6
u/-GenlyAI- May 30 '26
I want to see EDC no matter what it is. Not what do you EDC for work. So I say no to the "what do you do for a living".
I know this is a consumer sub but it's a little annoying because employers should be paying for tools on the job.
6
u/KamenRider2049 Gear Enthusiast May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Lots of self appointed “real EDC” police. Post only your phone , wallet, keys here lol
/s
But really sometimes it’s just nice to check out other EDC subs or groups for other interesting and even heaven forbid EDC-adjacent stuff. Often the gatekeeping by some members here stifles creativity, variety, good old fun.
5
u/kiroyapso2 May 30 '26
Seems like its mainly the budget people too. They"ll hate on anything that looks like it costs more than 20 bucks, and if your expensive item doesn't look like its been scraped across pavement, its not real EDC. Even so, it"ll be hard to show wear on raw material items compared to scratched anodized unless your zoom in on each individual item
1
u/UnsureAndUnqualified May 31 '26
Do you really only carry your phone/wallet/keys everywhere? If I'm going out the door with my wallet, my torch is also with me guaranteed. And my multitool unless I'm going somewhere where knives aren't allowed.
4
u/J_Tyleski66 May 30 '26
What you do for work is not who you are though, and age is really irrelevant when it comes to this stuff. If you're curious what demographic a poster fits into, ask. If they wanna tell you they will, otherwise that's their business. Only thing this sub is for is what we carry on us (like knives and guns), not what we list on our w2. Make your own sub if you don't like this one

1
u/Aegri-Mentis May 31 '26
Why does a poster’s occupation matter for their EDC?
For the most part, I carry the same EDC on days off as I do on the job.
I’m actually LESS interested in what someone carries for work, as it is probably has less relevance for me if we don’t have the same job.
Generally, you’re at work only about 25% of the week. That’s not as relevant as to what you carry the rest of the week.

Hi. We generally don’t ban people unless they repeatedly break the rules or show up acting mega rude or something from the start.
That said, if you don’t like seeing guns, this probably isn’t the right community for you. We have no plans to restrict gun-related posts beyond our existing requirement that they be relevant to EDC. Guns are a common part of many people’s everyday carry setups, so they’re going to remain part of the sub here.
3
u/glockguy34 May 30 '26
Hard disagree on the former but I heavily agree with the latter. We have a second amendment, and when seconds count, the police & EMS are minutes away. You are your own first responder and your safety is your responsibility.

For #1, we moved away from age/job title requirements for a reason.
Those posts can turn into people demanding that OP justify their carry based on their profession instead of discussing the actual gear. We’ve all seen the comments: “Why does an office worker need a knife?” “Why does a software engineer need a gun?” “Why are you carrying that if you’re not law enforcement?” That’s not a conversation we want to force people into every time they post.
There’s also the simple reality that we don’t need to require people to disclose personal information about themselves to participate here. If someone wants to provide context, great. If they don’t, that’s fine too.
As for engagement, that’s honestly not something we’re concerned with when writing rules. Rules exist to shape the kind of sub we want, not to optimize for upvotes.
For #2, if someone is repeatedly posting primarily to promote an Instagram account, business, or brand, please report it. We do look at those situations and there are a few users we’re already keeping an eye on.
