Book 2: Doomsday Scenario Carl’s Class
Despite Carl being in the military, he had no real experience with bombs until the dungeon. The only reason he started leveling up his bomb skills was because the first mobs he encountered were goblins, which led to the Goblin Pass tattoo, which allowed them to infiltrate the band of goblins and use the explosives to kill the Goblin Chief, and so on.
If they had gone down a different hallway at the beginning, he might have gone on a completely different path than Compensated Anarchist. What do y’all think could have been some classes he might go with?
I think he would have stayed a physical/melee class rather than magic-based for sure.

It's one of those things that's hard to tell since it would greatly be reliant on what he fights.
Maybe he would have gotten a slingshot and become Carl the Menace.

I think we can all agree that with how bad his optics were with the slingshot, per Zev, it wouldn't have mattered.
And he's still a Menace.

Some kind of boating class, because he was in the NAVY

Not the navy. Coast Guard.

Fortification Engineer Class might be one. It might be a little too speclized for a 2 person party but Carl loves to build stuff. Mabye if he went down a diffrent hallway he could have ended up in a medium sized party where it could have worked well.

IIRC he did have some electronics expertise in his background.

u/Infinite_Amount_6329 11h ago
Wasn't he working as a boat mechanic? A lot of electronics work there.

I think the big factor in a lot of what happens is mordecai. Carl and donut are lucky to have him guiding him as a lot of crawlers had terrible people guiding them

Carl owes his life to superior intel gained from Mordecai and the Cookbook

Shout out Frank Q. and Maggie Mai (or however it's spelled, I only listened to the audio books and SBT) for having one of THE worst game guides

Evil or amoral, perhaps, but given the super early Ring of Divine Suffering, not necessarily bad advice from a scorched earth/get power at all costs perspective.
Gotta remember, it's also up to Crawlers whether they take advice. Carl and Donut don't always listen to everything Mordecai recommends.

Given that Mordecai needed his crawlers to reach the fourth floor to count towards his indenture contract then it would make sense a game guide would want people to level up as fast as possible. Crawler killing is a guaranteed way to Level up fast

Drug Dealer class if they had gone toward the Lamah. Support class with access to poisons.

I don't think its fair to say he had no real experience with bombs, he did know enough to be able to design depth charges. I took that as more his creation than a dungeon recipe since th announcers talked about its design as straight out of earth history

Basically he’s quite a hands on guy. I think he starts with electrical engineering 6 or similar. A sideways into bombs and traps is quite logical.

And some Coast Guard personnel do take explosives handling classes and munitions training, specifically do deal with things like discovering unexploded ordinance from WWII, or on sunk/damaged Navy craft when assisting in rescue and recovery.

I dunno.... I feel like Carl is a man who was BORN to blow shit up. And stomp on things with his bare little piggy wiggys of course. But mostly blow shit up. Literal and metaphorical. Doesn't really matter where he started out, or what the eventual class was, he would have found a way to the Cookbook and blowing shit up. Some people are fated for certain things...

I kinda feel like Carl was the kind of kid who was kinda irresponsible with fireworks when he could get ahold of some. Maybe he hurt himself on a low yield black cat once before he learned to treat explosives with respect.

u/Fullwake 11h ago
Put a cherry bomb in the school toilet and regretted it, not because of the trouble he got in, or even getting hurt, but because he got horribly splashed with public toilet... essence?

Lol, yeah. On the plus side, that's where he got his first point in the "you've been covered in something disgusting, now you're just going to have to walk around and deal with it" skill. It's a skill that's served him well in the dungeon.

Honestly disagree. (Since post is book two spoiling the rest):
Carl’s childhood seemed like the “keep your head down” kind of reaction to trauma before the group home. It feeds into his relationship with Bea in how he buries his head in the sand and hides from the problems. He wouldn’t have done anything that visible. The dungeon is kind of the first time he really lets himself get fucking loud about it all, and the explosive release works as a kind of unbolting of that pushing down of himself before.

u/YorubaOyinbo 11h ago
Carl’s electrical engineering talent, training, and experience are what led him to explosives handling, which is basically a form of applied electrical engineering.
That, combined with his extensive experience playing D&D with the coasties — which taught him how to optimize within a known game architecture — which led him to realize how OP explosives are, especially in a Dungeon World cycle with unlimited inventory.

The AI likely has a lot of leeway in directing you through suggestion. It t is likely he would have ended up in a similar class still. There are hints that the interaction with the AI is unique to each player. And if the AI struggling to understand its own pain through a lens of human experience

A monk class, like ithers mention, Mordecai recommended that since he did a lot of unarmed combat, and he chose Anarchist because of bombs but also because of unarmed so itd make sense if he never ended up with the explosives experience that hed just go to Monk. Alot were locked cause of his desporado tattoo from my understanding but again that happened because of...you guessed it explosives. So no explosives baby kills = no tattoo = no monk class lock = many more monk options for him.

I wonder a lot if in an alternative crawl, he'd have end up with some of lightning themed class? He primarily worked on boat electrical systems, if I had to guess his position in the CG was probably as an electricians mate and that would be pretty on-theme.
Funnily I nearly joined the CG myself and that was the position I was aiming for, until some big life events made that a lot harder to have happen.

u/workerbee77 5h ago
Yes and no. He did have firearm experience, which is also explosive of a kind. And mechanical knowledge, so traps would would be very natural for him to work on. That could lead into a similar build

He had no choices about where to go, the AI was controlling him from the drop.

He'd have probably picked a monk class or some similar unarmed combat specialized class, like Mordecai originally proposed.
He was locked out of a lot the monk classes because he already had a Desperado club pass, which he got when they blew up the Goblin Warchief and all the Goblin babies. He was still looking into unarmed combat classes at class selection, like Prizefighter.
