Im torn between distros that would be made to look like frutiger aero.

I have been on Linux for about a year and i dont know shit. (Mind you i never really made research that much as just looked around in forms for help)

I originally was on Zorin OSs and moves to base ubuntu, do far i like how Linux is lighter on my pc but i feel like even then its not using every thing it has. ( its a laptop nivdia 3050 4 VRam and 16 gigs or ram, dont remember the CPU but its good to me)

I have been wanting to change OS again for something that would be better to take advantage of my PC preformance but been torn in choosing an OS.

I want to get the frutiger aero look at the OS and i found arch and mint linux, although i know nothing about how it works under the hood so i would say that arch is not a good idea.(i am willing to learn it if its worth over mint in terms of customization and a decent learning curve that i can apply in other cases)

I would most likely follow someone’s instructions to make the theme but besides this point i wanted to know if there is any better OS to choose from or should i move to mint or arch.

Why is nobody talking about PikaOS?

I’ve been distro hopping for quite a while, and one distro that I think deserves a lot more attention is PikaOS.

I’m honestly surprised it isn’t discussed more often.

If you like newer kernels, newer drivers, good gaming support, strong NVIDIA support, and a modern desktop experience — but you still prefer the Debian/Ubuntu software ecosystem — PikaOS is a really interesting option.

The easiest comparison I can make is:

PikaOS feels like the Debian/Ubuntu-family equivalent of CachyOS.

Not because they are technically the same, but because they seem to target a similar type of user: someone who wants a fast, modern, optimized desktop without manually configuring every part of the system.

A few things that stand out to me:

  • Very recent kernels and drivers
  • Strong NVIDIA support
  • KDE Plasma/GNOME/Hyprland/Niri/Cosmic DE/WM options
  • Good gaming focus
  • Performance-oriented defaults
  • Access to the huge .deb software ecosystem
  • Custom tools for drivers, kernels, updates and system management
  • Much more up-to-date than what many people expect from a Debian-family distro

For people who like Ubuntu/Debian compatibility but think the traditional releases can sometimes feel too conservative, PikaOS hits a pretty interesting middle ground.

It’s obviously still a smaller project, and I’m not saying everyone should replace their current distro with it. But if you’re already the kind of person who installs different distros just to see what they’re like, I think PikaOS absolutely deserves a spot on your test list.

Boot the live ISO, put it on a spare SSD or partition, and spend a few days with it.

I’d especially like to hear from people here who have already tried it:

What was your experience with PikaOS? And if you haven’t tried it yet, what would make you interested — or hesitant — to install it?

Just switched to Void

I used Fedora KDE for a year and now decided to try Void Linux. I really like the performance, even tho there are a lot of things you have to set up manually. Most Plasma features work fine, but some GUI settings rely on systemd, like timezone settings — and I haven't tried installing alternatives yet because I don't need to, so I can't say if there is a replacement for now. Anyway, I'm satisfied :)

FreeLinX base 1.3.1 Release

FreeLinX base 1.3.1 is now available. FreeLinX is an independent Linux distribution—not based on Debian, Alpine, or any other distro—built with zero GNU software.

The system stack includes the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel, musl 1.2.5 libc, LLVM toolchain (clang, LLD, compiler-rt, libc++), NetBSD userland, runit init, mdevd, mksh, netbsd-curses, doas, and Limine boot loader (BIOS and UEFI). Compliance with the "No GNU" policy is verified automatically via check-nognu.

The base edition provides a minimal console environment consuming about 60 MB of RAM post-boot (~60.87 MiB as captured in the fastfetch output). The ~300 MB hybrid ISO runs as a live environment via squashfs with a RAM overlay, and xsetup installs the system to GPT disks with no initramfs.

Package management is handled by xpkg, featuring 428 signed packages (Ed25519 signatures, sha256 checks, atomic upgrades with rollback) including Xorg, Openbox, dwm, Firefox, mpv, and ffmpeg. Base system upgrades use flxupgrade, which preserves user settings and /home.

The distribution builds from source on any x86_64 Linux host without root via sh build-base.sh. Licensed under BSD-2-Clause.

Support & Infrastructure: Donations via Buy Me a Coffee or crypto help cover domain and package manager infrastructure costs.

Testing has been conducted in QEMU/KVM. Real hardware testers are wanted; please note that Secure Boot must be disabled. Please submit feedback and hardware test reports.

Looking to switch to KDE, distro recommendations?

Hello guys!

I've mostly been a GNOME user, but now I'm considering trying KDE again for the first time in a long time. I like GNOME, but it feels a bit laggy.

Since I don't have much experience with KDE, what distro would you recommend?

I'd like something popular and well-supported, not some random hobby distro. I also want the latest version of KDE and something that's beginner-friendly.

Thinking of Switching Distro

I'm thinking of switching my linux distribution but before I do I figured I'd do the smart thing and see other people's experience with the distros.

For context, my first distro was Bazzite which I quickly switched away from after I realized it was perhaps a little too complex for a total beginner such as myself to use. Since then I have been using Linux Mint for the past two months or so and right now I'm considering switching to either Pop!_OS, or Nobara. Both seem pretty cool; Nobara in particular has really caught my eye atm, but I just wanted to know if there's anything in particularly I should know about either distro before making the switch (e.g. complexity, compatibility, troubleshooting difficulty, any major bugs or issues etc.). I mainly use my computer for gaming but will occasionally get into code or design as well so there's that as well.

Distros good for gaming with minimal or no console use?

I'm running Bazzite KDE Plasma and I'm very happy. Every game works like on Windows, including HDR and even my office and Epson photo printer apps run fine. No terminal use was needed. I had Linux Mint before, but I couldn't get the same results and gaming performance was worse even with all the tweaks.

I'd like to test something similar on my older PC. I see Nobara and Pop!_OS recommended a lot, but I don't like the Mac style interface on Pop!_OS.

Any thoughts?

Best Linux distro for a very low-end laptop?

Hi, I want to try Linux on my old laptop.
Specs are only 4GB RAM and 16GB eMMC 😅

I’m a beginner, so I’m looking for something easy to use and preferably comes with the essential apps already, especially for students.

Mainly need it for browsing, watching videos, doing assignments, PDFs, Office/LibreOffice, etc.

I don’t really care about gaming or anything heavy. Just want something that runs smoothly and doesn’t take up too much storage.

What distro would you guys recommend for these specs? And is 16GB eMMC enough for Linux + basic apps?

Thanks!

I built Niveth Linux 0.1 — a calm, simple and polished GNOME-based distro

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been working on my own Linux distribution called Niveth Linux, and today I’m sharing the first release: Niveth 0.1.

Niveth is built on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and uses GNOME, with the focus being on creating a calm, simple and polished desktop experience.

Some of the things I’ve built/integrated:

• Custom Niveth desktop experience

• Niveth App Center

• Niveth Files

• Custom Light/Dark wallpaper system

• Vivaldi integration with Light/Dark theme handling

• MechvibesDX keyboard and mouse sounds

• Calamares installer configuration

This is an early release and I’m interested in honest feedback, especially on the overall desktop experience and presentation.

"Appliance-like" lightweight distros?

Currently, my go-to distro to install on old computers I recycle for non-tech-savvy friends and relatives is Mint XFCE. Its UX is quite similar to that of Windows XP and Windows 7, it is fast on old hardware, it is very stable, and it requires relatively little maintenance (and rarely using the terminal after the initial setup).

However, I am open to further suggestions for lightweight distros with "appliance"-like use. That is, a non-tech-savvy user switches the computer on and after a short boot sequence, can use Firefox (or Chrome), VLC, Okular, and LibreOffice easily without any OS issues or interruptions. No need for any "power user" or gaming features after the initial setup - just turn it on and use a browser and office suite, as well as media playback, with no problems. Especially if the distro is completely auto-updating with minimal issues and maintains itself for years without human intervention.
