Infodumping Mr Horn Nose

This is such an awesome story genuinely super cute.

I would’ve been sad if he was stuck in a tiny tank for 30 years but I’m thrilled that he is probably actually having a good life. That’s so nice.

I saw just the 1st screenshot and thought that was all. thought it was kinda interesting(?) but like autism posting. turns out it's autism viewing.

It's certainly a trailing indicator of how awful the world is right now and the constant < waves hands at everything > ...
... but this story has me tearing up. Fantastic. Shut up, I don't want to know if it's fake.
Everyone involved is perfect and awesome. May their pillows always be cool, and the restaurant they want to go to for dinner open, with their favorite table immediately available, forever.

As kids my brother and I fell in love with the fish in a tank at Whole Foods, we especially loved the plecostomus. Every time we went we would go and see if he was there, he was for years. My grandma also had a much smaller one in her fish tank, he was named George and was aggressive, he managed to survive when most of the other fish died over time. Every time we had to move her fish to a new place or something a few would pass but never George, her old bud

When I was about twelve, I was obsessed with catching stickleback fish and tadpoles at the park near our house, so my dad decided we should build a pond so we could bring some home. We spent a week that summer building that pond together. I have aphantasia but if there's one image that I can just about see, it's my dad silhouetted against the sunset, leaning on a spade, absolutely shattered from digging all day.
We spent so much time taking care of our pond and the fish, frogs and newts in it, that one day I found that I just couldn't eat fish any more, and I've never been able to since. I loved all my fish-babies too much.
Now my kids spend their whole summer out at the pond with grandad. My youngest is more obsessed with frogs than I ever was. And the other day, grandad bought her frog-shaped sweets and she freaked out.
They do both still eat fish though!

u/weebles_wobbles 6h ago
Man. This is the WORST part of aphantasia! People who don’t have it will never understand the lost memories. I’m so happy that you have a tiny glimpse of this one 💕
18
u/SilvRS 5h ago
Thank you!
It's by far the worst part of aphantasia for me. Anything else is easy to deal with, because it's all just doing things differently. But the fact that I do in fact have a couple of memories I can just about see for a split second makes the fact that almost everything else just vanishes so much worse.
Does make those memories even more special, though.

u/Anonymous_Jr 4h ago
I describe my experiences with it as like the afterimage/burn-in of bright lights (like camera flashes or car headlights, I used to say polaroid but that didn't feel accurate to my taste of phrasing)
3
u/TerriGato 1h ago
When you dream, do you see images? My partner has aphantasia and it absolutely blows my mind that he can dream (and lucid dream) in full colour but can't picture anything at all.
2
u/Anonymous_Jr 52m ago
Vividly, Of dreams that I do remember, albeit no longer as clear in retrospect as in experience; there is implied realistic qualities.
In experience, it feels as vivid as seeing with my real eyes, but upon waking things blur over time (quickly or not, variable) though I linger with persistence that I see in dream as I do IRL.
I have had lucid dreams, but near none past 18, most were had before my 20s; once 'recently'.
Of my lucid dreams, flight was done through flapping in the direction I wish to move away from. It needed to be with intent, but thinking on it now it was like I would drag my location. Like moving a map with click-drag; but I pulled myself up and through the air.
Of the lucid dreams, because of the vividity, I can recall them very clear; though I have just about as many non-lucid dreams that I remember to an in-between vividity (of IRL and Lucid).
I would compare it to crossing an Event Horizon, where despite my waking inabilities, my dreams feel as defined as a singularity.
Which I feel sounds oxymoronic, but that is how I've decided to describe it. It's not a Super Position, but I dare not collapse it.

Wear Meta glasses all the time and continuously upload that footage to the cloud, then you can simply have a premium AI generate an idealized visual memory compilation for you every week off that data.

u/ActualWhiterabbit 4h ago
Don't kid yourself, if that lobster ever got the chance he'd eat you and everyone you cared about

u/_kahteh god gave me hands but not shame 7h ago
Fuck yeah, I love plecos. It breaks my heart that my little 11-gallon tank is way too small for one
23
u/BHunter1140 7h ago
Yeah grandma wasn’t known for her animal knowledge. George lived at least a decade in a 10 or 20 gal tank with many many other fish. George was prone to kill the other fish though, so I guess he fixed the overpopulation issue on his own
3
u/agitated_houseplant 2h ago
There are tiny plecos! There's a few species that max out at 2-4" instead of 8-12". Check out the bristle nose (these also come in albino!) and the clown plecos.
2
u/TerriGato 1h ago
I miss my red bristlenose so much. He stressed the hell out of my Corys but he was a pretty little dude. I rehomed them when I moved.

u/tangentrification 3h ago
One of my old roommates was an aquarium person and her plecos were my absolute favorite. Such quirky little guys

u/proto_synnic 7h ago
It's cool that Mr Horn Nose is routinely fed, taken care of, and doesn't have to worry about predators... But can you imagine spending the entirety of your lifetime in an (admittedly larger than average) tank in a hotel lobby?
157
u/ike38000 7h ago
If we assume Maslow's hierarchy of needs applies to fish that guy is probably still in the top 1% of most satisfied fish anywhere because of the food and no predators parts.
47
u/proto_synnic 7h ago
Fair point, but it only guarantees one of the five tenets, with a possibility to satisfy portions of the others. What about Mr Horn Nose's need to self actualize?
85
u/Pkrudeboy 6h ago
He gets to people watch all the time. Maybe Mr Horn Nose composes short stories about the patrons of the hotel.
20
u/FeuerroteZora 2h ago
Maybe Mr Horn Nose has been obsessing over this toddler who came to see him for a time decades ago and has been composing life stories for them in the time since then.
58
18
u/ActualWhiterabbit 4h ago
Mr Horn Nose's need to self actualize?
As a species it looks like their fins are too short to rub their horn which is how most apes self actualize
7
u/cheerful_cynic 4h ago
Well, we've apparently maxed out at masturbating bear status as a species, it's been a good enough run I guess 🤷🏽♀️
2
u/MindlessMage777 3h ago
It really is the best place to stop. Trying out something like nuclear weapons or creating synthetic sentient life would just be crazy.
24
u/A_VERY_LARGE_DOG 7h ago
Probably get to meet a few really cool kids.
11
u/proto_synnic 7h ago
There are definitely cool kids to meet, but how many kids (and adults) are there that completely ignore "Do Not Tap On The Glass" signs?
9
u/A_VERY_LARGE_DOG 6h ago
Perhaps Mr. Horn Nose prays for a predator who will not come? I prefer my imaginary narrative to yours, and that will have to be okay.

u/rosmarine 7h ago
as soon as I saw the fish I was like. oh NO WONDER op was obsessed with it. fucking look at it!!!!

The whitemargin unicornfish (Naso annulatus), also known as the ringtailed unicornfish or short-horned unicorn-fish.
Mr. Horn Nose is a unicorn. 🦄

They're also called Whitemargin Unicornfish and if i was a kid i'd have lost my shit too. They have HORNS and also a very silly football shaped body

u/Transientmind 6h ago
Getting the local aquarium to maintain your fish tank actually makes a lot of sense — ALL the sense — but I’d never really thought about it.
18
u/SpookyVoidCat 7h ago
I was not expecting the fish to look like someone 3D printed a demon from guernica
10
u/shinybeats89 6h ago
I hope that person made a trip to see their pet fish that lives at Sheraton hotel lobby again.

I have a clownfish named Mary that I am also obsessed with. She is 13 years old and has murdered multiple husbands

Mr. Horn Nose is, as the kids say, mogging us all. Look at those cheekbones.

The whimsy of human interaction with the mundane world. You fucking love to see it

u/Brickie78 5h ago
We were on holiday in Germany this year and our hotel didn't have a fish tank but the room TVs did default to what we termed "Ambient Fish TV", which was a loop of about 5 minutes or so. And we all got slightly obsessed with a fish that did look rather like that Naso.
6
u/OpenSauceMods 4h ago
This is so cute, I can imagine the aquarium guy being thrilled someone is asking about fish

u/WildRaspberriesTN 5h ago
When my son was a toddler he was obsessed with fish. He loved tanks, Dory and Nemo, and Octonauts. He’s still a science kid but he’s moved on to robotics and astronomy. But gosh darn he was the only two years old in the theatre that sat completely still to watch Finding Dory.
3
u/BumblebeeDirect 6h ago
Has anyone worked out which hotel this is? There can only be so many Sheratons in California with 2000gal aquaria, right?
3
u/SomewhereTraining839 5h ago
Awww it’s kinda like how kids now see clownfish and blue tangs as Nemo and Dory<3
3
u/TwilightReader100 2h ago
My aquarium has a tank of clownfish and regal blue tangs. I call them all Marlin or Nemo and Dory, even though the last pair of kids I was looking after had no idea who the characters were, they hadn't seen those movies yet.
4
u/Personal_Ward 5h ago
Why, every single time I was reading this post, did I read the fish's name as "Mr Norn Horse?"
Literally up until the moment I went to check the comments and I was like wait a sec...
A full 30-60 seconds after seeing the titular horn nose...
4
u/Beatleboy62 4h ago
Not the point at all, but, if it was the dad's work trip, why did mom and the kid have to go along?
"And my mom wasn't having that" then why not stay home with the kid? I just do not get that part. Especially if they sat in the Sheraton lobby all day? What was the point of them being there at all, why not just mother and child be together at home?
3
u/cheffgeoff 2h ago
That's what I was wondering. What a weird scenario. Not necessarily bad or wrong, but... why? The whole plot is based on this. Unless they were in a weird town there was lots of public transportation in California in the 1990's... and there were lots of fully functional day cares too...
2
u/HuckleberryHuman5926 1h ago
Yeah, if I were critiquing it as a work of fiction, I'd suggest it would be more plausible with less detail there.
Reading it as a real-life person telling a story from their childhood, I suspect there were other considerations that OP didn't perceive/remember/retain specifically because they were a preschooler.
(Current headcanon: the parents took OP along so they could go to Disneyland or something, but OP doesn't remember that part, and just remembers Mr. Horn Nose)
2
u/ThatInAHat 23m ago
Sounds about right. The primary things I remember about my DisneyWorld trip at that age were feeding ducklings at the edge of the lake (good memory, but also concerning in retrospect) and that my Dad shaved his mustache off (little me was hysterical and begged him to “put it back!!”)
2
u/SwordfishOk504 YOU EVER EATEN A MARSHMALLOW BEFORE MR BITCHWOOD???? 1h ago
But why did the mom have to go on the trip just to watch the kid who didnt need to go?

Lotta animals normally kept as pets in terrariums/aquariums can live for decades.
Hermit crabs are a non vertebrate example. Many species kept as pets can live up to 40 years assuming a good standard of care.
Pisses me off whenever people treat them as low maintenance pets.

I knew exactly which fish they meant. It's a weird looking one for sure. We called it the Unicorn fish
But also, why did the mom have to come along if there wasn't anything to do?
