[USA] California roll meets California cop. Instant consequences.
Came to a full stop at a stop sign in a school zone with a cop parked curbside right next to me. A lady coming through the intersection did a rolling stop. Couldn’t have picked a worse time or place 🚔 Fremont cops are not to be messed with.

Not just a rolling stop, she tried to cut you off of your turn. Fuck her!

It’s crazy how many people do this.

u/BIT-NETRaptor 19d ago
I am not joking, they think you are yielding to them by completing your stop at the stop sign. They completely ignore that they are supposed to be stopping because they think you’re making a gesture for them to go in front…. by stopping… at a STOP sign.

u/utterscrub 18d ago
Yes this is it exactly, and it’s kind of crazy that at times it’s as though you can tell someone is about to do it. You put it perfectly, they think that coming to a complete stop is an indication that you’re yielding to them.

They were likely on their phone and only glanced up for a second. Saw OP was stopped and assumed that it was their turn, regardless of the fact that they never stopped.

You stopped. Neither other car did. The other big problem is they didn't yield the right of way despite you being at the intersection first.

I think the white truck had stopped? Hard to tell as it's behind a curve but it feels like as the cam car goes closer the truck is starting from a full stop

Obviously per cop basis but if everyone is doing the same stuff I think let it slide. If the flow of traffic is 75-79 in the passing lane people I’ve seen cops not pull anyone over even though 75 is 10 over.
The point in stopping is to check if everything is clear before proceeding, first car was all clear second car was blatantly and disrespectfully cutting off the right of way, or they were distracted.

u/xyloplax 20d ago
Yeah, cops are often looking for the most aggressive drivers on the road and 4 over (for example) is low revenue too. I once was doing 53 in a 45 and a cop passed me by.

Eight out of every ten cars in my neighborhood do not come to a complete stop at an intersection unless there’s another car going in their direction.

Eight of ten cars in your neighborhood are ripe for a ticket. I frequent a very busy up and coming rural suburb thats practically all stop signs. Can confirm rollers cause too much ambiguity in a system that's premised on people coming to a stop.

I live in a non-rural but insulated suburban coastal town with scenic views of Boston which is only a quick ride on the train away! Lovely Salem is just next door for more Witchy fun. But I digress. My town is full of stop signs and rollers. Problem is, im sitting at the sign stopped and waiting, the roller pulls up and never stops moving. I, not wanting to get hit by someone not paying attention watch them carefully for a moment to see if they will stop to let me take my rightful turn. They see me "hesitating" and take that as some type of concession to go, and they just roll on forward.
I will say, this does get tricky though, because we also have lots of elderly drivers who are so fucking polite as to just sit still and wait until everyone else goes because they are confused. Then once they finally go they get out onto the main street, only to stop to wave-of-death some left turning sap who proceeds to pull out into oncoming traffic.

I got rear ended at a stop sign in my neighbourhood. The driver was irate that I stopped fully at the stop sign.

u/M------- 19d ago
Ten out of ten in my neighbourhood. And when there is another car so they have to stop, it's only about 1 out of 10 that actually stops at the stop line, rather than rolling through the crosswalk (multi-use path) before stopping.
It's riskier to ride a bike on the MUP than on the street, because of the cross-traffic drivers who don't stop for stop signs.

man this happens non stop where i live. I'm sure it's everywhere. i've come to a 4-way at basically the same time as another driver, wave them through and then the car behind them tries to go while i've been sitting there waiting for the first car to go.

just for the record all states do this

u/vineethrpatil 20d ago
Not when there’s lax enforcement in the Bay Area, especially in some of the surrounding counties.

I wish people wouldn't use the oxymoron rolling stop. That's not a thing.
That lady didn't stop.

Stop saying "old news"! News cant be old!
Stop saying "freezer burn"! Freezers don't burn!
Stop saying "crash landing"! You didn't land if you crashed!
Stop saying "original copy"! It's not the original if it's a copy.
She understood it's an oxymoron and then gets mad at what makes it an oxymoron.

Who are you talking about sweetheart? I'm a girl.

sorry!

u/satisfiction_phobos 20d ago
😉 ty and I am mad because my hand got exploded by an airbag in 2018 from someone rolling a stop.
I'm not mad at oxymorons though.

u/Renizance 20d ago
Well I hope your hand is ok and you are doing alright now.
fuck people running stop signs.

Do you have trouble with terms like “jumbo shrimp”?
-14
u/satisfiction_phobos 20d ago
No I have a problem with my broken hand from the idiot who didn't stop. False equivalence dogshit reply.
7
u/Ok-Boisenberry 19d ago
It was an obvious joke about oxymorons.
Did you not understand it or something?
How would they know you had a broken hand from a similar situation unless they read through your comments? You think everyone does that? Weird.
But please, keep being an asshole that thinks everyone knows your life story. Woohoo!
9
u/vineethrpatil 20d ago
It’s intentionally named so to highlight the stupidity of the people who can’t read and don’t come to a full stop in such situations
-2
u/satisfiction_phobos 20d ago
Ah I'm sorry if I sounded like I was attacking ya. I meant to tag on there "also, sorry this idiot did that." Totally fair that you're using it like that -- but I guess it's the people who do it and defend it using that term that bug me. If ya know what I mean.
P.S. My hand had pins in it from where the airbag deployed on it shattering my middle two metacarpals. That guy didn't stop. That's why I might seem a little touchy -- but I am on your side!

Or pre-heating the oven

There are only two states an oven can possibly exist in: HEATED OR UNHEATED!

I got my driving license in the UK and my partner in Germany. Both these countries need you to fully stop. Slowing down is not enough. What country are you from?

Yea if you aren't fully stopping in the UK, you're doing it wrong, lol. Please come to a full stop for at least 3 seconds. My driving instructor made me count 3 Mississippis at each stop.

u/BladeVortex3226 20d ago
How do you definitively determine order at an all way stop intersection if nobody has to stop?
7
3
u/__fez 19d ago
in Poland there are no such intersections, and the right of way is always clearly marked by signs
STOP sign is usually at places with low visibility
in the video from this post I was actually a bit confused, as if there is no other signage, then in Poland the right of way is for the car that is on the right hand side to you, so to me it looked like the car recording cut off the car on the right
I've read some other comments and now I understand that in the US this is a all STOP intersection and it works differently

Years back, with friend driving..."That was a stop sign". She replied it was a California roll. We were in Virginia. She got her license in Virginia. She lived in California when she was 5.
2
u/AdhesivenessIll6341 19d ago
Even better was how they didn’t pull over when the cop was behind them
2
u/zzbear03 19d ago
The worse are those drivers that stop 10-15 ft behind the stop line just so they can claim they stopped first and then cut you off because you stopped closer to the stop line.

Not to cut the lady any slack.. But that intersection is a little odd. Due to the crosswalk the stop line for OP is way back from the normal location. It may have appeared from her angle that you hadn't actually made it up to the interaction yet and she might have thought she had the right of way.
6
u/vineethrpatil 20d ago
No excuse to skip a Stop All Way sign. Whether I was there or not, she had to stop at the sign in the first place
3
u/TacoBender920 20d ago
I guess you missed the part where I literally said I didn't want to cut her any slack 🤷🏼♂️
5
u/vineethrpatil 20d ago
I know you said that. But I was reflecting on your terrain analysis - that it’s not an excuse to roll across a stop sign for anyone, no matter what the situation is
